Chapter 4

An Exhortation to Obedience

1

Hear… now, O Israel, the statutes… and ordinances I am teaching you to follow, so that you may live and may enter and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you.

𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤇𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤋𐤌𐤃 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤕𐤇𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤔𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤊𐤌

שְׁמַ֤ע אֶל־ וְעַתָּ֣ה יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל הַֽחֻקִּים֙ וְאֶל־ הַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֧ר אָֽנֹכִ֛י מְלַמֵּ֥ד אֶתְכֶ֖ם לַעֲשׂ֑וֹת לְמַ֣עַן תִּֽחְי֗וּ וּבָאתֶם֙ וִֽירִשְׁתֶּ֣ם אֶת־ הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֧ר יְהוָ֛ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י אֲבֹתֵיכֶ֖ם נֹתֵ֥ן לָכֶֽם׃ šə·ma‘ ’el- wə·‘at·tāh yiś·rā·’êl ha·ḥuq·qîm wə·’el- ham·miš·pā·ṭîm ’ă·šer ’ā·nō·ḵî mə·lam·mêḏ ’eṯ·ḵem la·‘ă·śō·wṯ lə·ma·‘an tiḥ·yū ū·ḇā·ṯem wî·riš·tem ’eṯ- hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê ’ă·ḇō·ṯê·ḵem nō·ṯên lā·ḵemWLC · 1

You must not add to… or subtract from what I command you…, so that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I am giving you -.

𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤎𐤐𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤕𐤂𐤓𐤏𐤅 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌

לֹ֣א תֹסִ֗פוּ עַל־ הַדָּבָר֙ תִגְרְע֖וּ מִמֶּ֑נּוּ אֲשֶׁ֤ר אָנֹכִי֙ מְצַוֶּ֣ה אֶתְכֶ֔ם וְלֹ֥א לִשְׁמֹ֗ר אֶת־ מִצְוֺת֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָנֹכִ֖י מְצַוֶּ֥ה אֶתְכֶֽם׃ lō ṯō·si·p̄ū ‘al- had·dā·ḇār ṯiḡ·rə·‘ū mim·men·nū ’ă·šer ’ā·nō·ḵî mə·ṣaw·weh ’eṯ·ḵem wə·lō liš·mōr ’eṯ- miṣ·wōṯ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem ’ă·šer ’ā·nō·ḵî mə·ṣaw·weh ’eṯ·ḵemWLC · 2

Your eyes have seen what the LORD did vvv at Baal-peor, for the LORD your God destroyed from among you all… who followed… vvv Baal of Peor.

עֵֽינֵיכֶם֙ הָֽרֹאֹ֔ת אֵ֛ת אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֖ה עָשָׂ֥ה בְּבַ֣עַל פְּע֑וֹר כִּ֣י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ הִשְׁמִיד֛וֹ מִקִּרְבֶּֽךָ׃ כָל־ הָאִ֗ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֤ר הָלַךְ֙ אַחֲרֵ֣י בַֽעַל־ פְּע֔וֹר ‘ê·nê·ḵem hā·rō·’ōṯ ’êṯ ’ă·šer- Yah·weh ‘ā·śāh bə·ḇa·‘al pə·‘ō·wr kî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā hiš·mî·ḏōw miq·qir·be·ḵā ḵāl hā·’îš ’ă·šer hā·laḵ ’a·ḥă·rê ḇa·‘al- pə·‘ō·wrWLC · 3

But you who held fast to the LORD your God [are] alive to this day, every one of you.

וְאַתֶּם֙ הַדְּבֵקִ֔ים בַּיהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֑ם חַיִּ֥ים הַיּֽוֹם׃ כֻּלְּכֶ֖ם wə·’at·tem had·də·ḇê·qîm Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem ḥay·yîm hay·yō·wm kul·lə·ḵemWLC · 4

See, I have taught you statutes and ordinances just as the LORD my God has commanded me, so that you may follow them… in the land that you are about to enter… and possess.

𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤃𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤇𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤑𐤅𐤍𐤉 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤍 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤁 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤔𐤌𐤄 𐤋𐤓𐤔𐤕𐤄

רְאֵ֣ה׀ לִמַּ֣דְתִּי אֶתְכֶ֗ם חֻקִּים֙ וּמִשְׁפָּטִ֔ים כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהָ֑י צִוַּ֖נִי לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת כֵּ֔ן בְּקֶ֣רֶב הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אַתֶּ֛ם בָּאִ֥ים שָׁ֖מָּה לְרִשְׁתָּֽהּ׃ rə·’êh lim·maḏ·tî ’eṯ·ḵem ḥuq·qîm ū·miš·pā·ṭîm ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hāy ṣiw·wa·nî la·‘ă·śō·wṯ kên bə·qe·reḇ hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer ’at·tem bā·’îm šām·māh lə·riš·tāhWLC · 5

Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding in the sight of the peoples, who will hear of all these statutes and say, “Surely this great nation [is] a wise and understanding people.”

וַעֲשִׂיתֶם֒ וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם֮ כִּ֣י הִ֤וא חָכְמַתְכֶם֙ וּבִ֣ינַתְכֶ֔ם לְעֵינֵ֖י הָעַמִּ֑ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִשְׁמְע֗וּן אֵ֚ת כָּל־ הָאֵ֔לֶּה הַחֻקִּ֣ים וְאָמְר֗וּ רַ֚ק הַזֶּֽה׃ הַגָּד֖וֹל הַגּ֥וֹי חָכָ֣ם וְנָב֔וֹן עַם־ wa·‘ă·śî·ṯem ū·šə·mar·tem kî hî ḥā·ḵə·maṯ·ḵem ū·ḇî·naṯ·ḵem lə·‘ê·nê hā·‘am·mîm ’ă·šer yiš·mə·‘ūn ’êṯ kāl- hā·’êl·leh ha·ḥuq·qîm wə·’ā·mə·rū raq haz·zeh hag·gā·ḏō·wl hag·gō·w ḥā·ḵām wə·nā·ḇō·wn ‘am-WLC · 6

For what nation [is] great enough to have a god [as] near to them as the LORD our God [is to us] whenever we call on Him?

𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤉 𐤂𐤅𐤉 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅

כִּ֚י מִי־ ג֣וֹי גָּד֔וֹל אֲשֶׁר־ ל֥וֹ אֱלֹהִ֖ים קְרֹבִ֣ים אֵלָ֑יו כַּיהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ בְּכָּל־ קָרְאֵ֖נוּ אֵלָֽיו׃ kî mî- ḡō·w gā·ḏō·wl ’ă·šer- lōw ’ĕ·lō·hîm qə·rō·ḇîm ’ê·lāw Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·nū bə·ḵāl qå̄·rə·ʾē·nū ’ê·lāwWLC · 7

And what nation [is] great enough to have righteous statutes and ordinances like this entire law I set before you today?

𐤅𐤌𐤉 𐤂𐤅𐤉 𐤂𐤃𐤅𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤇𐤒𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤔𐤐𐤈𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤊𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤕𐤅𐤓𐤄 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌

וּמִי֙ גּ֣וֹי גָּד֔וֹל אֲשֶׁר־ ל֛וֹ צַדִּיקִ֑ם חֻקִּ֥ים וּמִשְׁפָּטִ֖ים הַזֹּ֔את אֲשֶׁ֧ר כְּכֹל֙ הַתּוֹרָ֣ה אָנֹכִ֛י נֹתֵ֥ן לִפְנֵיכֶ֖ם הַיּֽוֹם׃ ū·mî gō·w gā·ḏō·wl ’ă·šer- lōw ṣad·dî·qim ḥuq·qîm ū·miš·pā·ṭîm haz·zōṯ ’ă·šer kə·ḵōl hat·tō·w·rāh ’ā·nō·ḵî nō·ṯên lip̄·nê·ḵem hay·yō·wmWLC · 8

Only be on your guard and diligently watch yourselves, so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen, and so that they do not slip from your heart as… long as you live. Teach them to your children and grandchildren…

רַ֡ק הִשָּׁ֣מֶר לְךָ֩ מְאֹ֗ד וּשְׁמֹ֨ר נַפְשְׁךָ֜ פֶּן־ תִּשְׁכַּ֨ח אֶת־ הַדְּבָרִ֜ים אֲשֶׁר־ עֵינֶ֗יךָ רָא֣וּ וּפֶן־ יָס֙וּרוּ֙ מִלְּבָ֣בְךָ֔ כֹּ֖ל יְמֵ֣י חַיֶּ֑יךָ וְהוֹדַעְתָּ֥ם לְבָנֶ֖יךָ וְלִבְנֵ֥י בָנֶֽיךָ׃ raq hiš·šā·mer lə·ḵā mə·’ōḏ ū·šə·mōr nap̄·šə·ḵā pen- tiš·kaḥ ’eṯ- had·də·ḇā·rîm ’ă·šer- ‘ê·ne·ḵā rā·’ū ū·p̄en- yā·sū·rū mil·lə·ḇā·ḇə·ḵā kōl yə·mê ḥay·ye·ḵā wə·hō·w·ḏa‘·tām lə·ḇā·ne·ḵā wə·liḇ·nê ḇā·ne·ḵāWLC · 9

The day you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, the LORD said to me, “Gather the people before Me to hear My words, so that they may learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may teach them to their children.”

𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤕 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤄𐤒𐤄𐤋 𐤋𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤋𐤌𐤃𐤅𐤍 𐤋𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤌 𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤋𐤌𐤃𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌

י֗וֹם אֲשֶׁ֨ר עָמַ֜דְתָּ לִפְנֵ֨י יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶיךָ֮ בְּחֹרֵב֒ יְהוָ֜ה בֶּאֱמֹ֨ר אֵלַ֗י הַקְהֶל־ לִי֙ הָעָ֔ם אֶת־ וְאַשְׁמִעֵ֖ם אֶת־ דְּבָרָ֑י אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִלְמְד֜וּן לְיִרְאָ֣ה אֹתִ֗י כָּל־ הַיָּמִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֨ר הֵ֤ם חַיִּים֙ עַל־ הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה וְאֶת־ יְלַמֵּדֽוּן׃ בְּנֵיהֶ֖ם yō·wm ’ă·šer ‘ā·maḏ·tā lip̄·nê Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā bə·ḥō·rêḇ Yah·weh be·’ĕ·mōr ’ê·lay haq·hel- lî hā·‘ām ’eṯ- wə·’aš·mi·‘êm ’eṯ- də·ḇā·rāy ’ă·šer yil·mə·ḏūn lə·yir·’āh ’ō·ṯî kāl- hay·yā·mîm ’ă·šer hêm ḥay·yîm ‘al- hā·’ă·ḏā·māh wə·’eṯ- yə·lam·mê·ḏūn bə·nê·hemWLC · 10

You came near and stood at the base of the mountain, a mountain blazing with fire to… the heavens, with black clouds and deep darkness.

𐤅𐤕𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤕𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤅𐤍 𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤄𐤄𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤄𐤓 𐤁𐤏𐤓 𐤁𐤀𐤔 𐤏𐤃 𐤋𐤁 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤍𐤍 𐤅𐤏𐤓𐤐𐤋 𐤇𐤔𐤊

וַתִּקְרְב֥וּן וַתַּֽעַמְד֖וּן תַּ֣חַת הָהָ֑ר וְהָהָ֞ר בֹּעֵ֤ר בָּאֵשׁ֙ עַד־ לֵ֣ב הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם עָנָ֥ן וַעֲרָפֶֽל׃ חֹ֖שֶׁךְ wat·tiq·rə·ḇūn wat·ta·‘am·ḏūn ta·ḥaṯ hā·hār wə·hā·hār bō·‘êr bā·’êš ‘aḏ- lêḇ haš·šā·ma·yim ‘ā·nān wa·‘ă·rā·p̄el ḥō·šeḵWLC · 11

And the LORD spoke to you out of the fire. You heard the sound of the words but saw no form; there was only a voice.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤌𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤀𐤔 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤍𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤌𐤅𐤍𐤄 𐤆𐤅𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤒𐤅𐤋

יְהוָ֛ה וַיְדַבֵּ֧ר אֲלֵיכֶ֖ם מִתּ֣וֹךְ הָאֵ֑שׁ אַתֶּ֣ם שֹׁמְעִ֔ים ק֤וֹל דְּבָרִים֙ רֹאִ֖ים אֵינְכֶ֥ם וּתְמוּנָ֛ה זוּלָתִ֥י קֽוֹל׃ Yah·weh way·ḏab·bêr ’ă·lê·ḵem mit·tō·wḵ hā·’êš ’at·tem šō·mə·‘îm qō·wl də·ḇā·rîm rō·’îm ’ê·nə·ḵem ū·ṯə·mū·nāh zū·lā·ṯî qō·wlWLC · 12

He declared to you His covenant, which He commanded you to follow— the Ten Commandments that He wrote on two tablets of stone.

𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤃 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤑𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤏𐤔𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤕 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤕𐤁𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤋𐤇𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌

וַיַּגֵּ֨ד לָכֶ֜ם אֶת־ בְּרִית֗וֹ אֲשֶׁ֨ר צִוָּ֤ה אֶתְכֶם֙ לַעֲשׂ֔וֹת עֲשֶׂ֖רֶת הַדְּבָרִ֑ים וַֽיִּכְתְּבֵ֔ם עַל־ שְׁנֵ֖י לֻח֥וֹת אֲבָנִֽים׃ way·yag·gêḏ lā·ḵem ’eṯ- bə·rî·ṯōw ’ă·šer ṣiw·wāh ’eṯ·ḵem la·‘ă·śō·wṯ ‘ă·śe·reṯ had·də·ḇā·rîm way·yiḵ·tə·ḇêm ‘al- šə·nê lu·ḥō·wṯ ’ă·ḇā·nîmWLC · 13

  • At that time the LORD commanded me to teach you the statutes and ordinances you are to follow in the land that you are crossing [the Jordan] to possess.

A Warning against Idolatry

So since you saw no form of any kind on the day the LORD spoke to you out of the fire at Horeb, be careful…

כִּ֣י רְאִיתֶם֙ לֹ֤א תְּמוּנָ֔ה כָּל־ בְּי֗וֹם יְהוָ֧ה דִּבֶּ֨ר אֲלֵיכֶ֛ם מִתּ֥וֹךְ הָאֵֽשׁ׃ בְּחֹרֵ֖ב וְנִשְׁמַרְתֶּ֥ם לְנַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶ֑ם מְאֹ֖ד kî rə·’î·ṯem lō tə·mū·nāh kāl- bə·yō·wm Yah·weh dib·ber ’ă·lê·ḵem mit·tō·wḵ hā·’êš bə·ḥō·rêḇ wə·niš·mar·tem lə·nap̄·šō·ṯê·ḵem mə·’ōḏWLC · 15

that you do not act corruptly and make an idol for yourselves of any form or shape, whether in the likeness of a male or female,

פֶּ֨ן־ תַּשְׁחִת֔וּן וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֥ם פֶּ֖סֶל לָכֶ֛ם תְּמוּנַ֣ת כָּל־ סָ֑מֶל תַּבְנִ֥ית זָכָ֖ר א֥וֹ נְקֵבָֽה׃ pen- taš·ḥi·ṯūn wa·‘ă·śî·ṯem pe·sel lā·ḵem tə·mū·naṯ kāl- sā·mel taḇ·nîṯ zā·ḵār ’ōw nə·qê·ḇāhWLC · 16

  • of any beast that [is] on the earth… or bird… that flies in the air,

[or] of any creature that crawls on the ground… or fish that [is] in the waters below -.

תַּבְנִ֕ית כָּל־ רֹמֵ֖שׂ בָּאֲדָמָ֑ה תַּבְנִ֛ית כָּל־ דָּגָ֥ה אֲשֶׁר־ בַּמַּ֖יִם מִתַּ֥חַת לָאָֽרֶץ׃ taḇ·nîṯ kāl- rō·mêś bā·’ă·ḏā·māh taḇ·nîṯ kāl- dā·ḡāh ’ă·šer- bam·ma·yim mit·ta·ḥaṯ lā·’ā·reṣWLC · 18

When you look… to the heavens and see the sun and moon and stars— all the host of heaven— do not be enticed to bow down and worship what the LORD your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven.

Yet the LORD has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be the people of His inheritance, as you are today…

The LORD, however, was angry with me on account of you, and He swore that I would not cross the Jordan… to enter… the good land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.

וַֽיהוָ֥ה הִתְאַנֶּף־ בִּ֖י עַל־ דִּבְרֵיכֶ֑ם וַיִּשָּׁבַ֗ע לְבִלְתִּ֤י עָבְרִי֙ אֶת־ הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן וּלְבִלְתִּי־ בֹא֙ אֶל־ הַטּוֹבָ֔ה הָאָ֣רֶץ אֲשֶׁר֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לְךָ֖ נַחֲלָֽה׃ Yah·weh hiṯ·’an·nep̄- bī ‘al- diḇ·rê·ḵem way·yiš·šā·ḇa‘ lə·ḇil·tî ‘ā·ḇə·rî ’eṯ- hay·yar·dên ū·lə·ḇil·tî- ḇō ’el- haṭ·ṭō·w·ḇāh hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā nō·ṯên lə·ḵā na·ḥă·lāhWLC · 21

For I will not be crossing the Jordan, because I must die in this land. But you shall cross over and take possession of that good land.

אֵינֶ֥נִּי עֹבֵ֖ר אֶת־ הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן כִּ֣י אָנֹכִ֥י מֵת֙ הַזֹּ֔את בָּאָ֣רֶץ וְאַתֶּם֙ עֹֽבְרִ֔ים וִֽירִשְׁתֶּ֕ם אֶת־ הַזֹּֽאת׃ הַטּוֹבָ֖ה הָאָ֥רֶץ ’ê·nen·nî ‘ō·ḇêr ’eṯ- hay·yar·dên kî ’ā·nō·ḵî mêṯ haz·zōṯ bā·’ā·reṣ wə·’at·tem ‘ō·ḇə·rîm wî·riš·tem ’eṯ- haz·zōṯ haṭ·ṭō·w·ḇāh hā·’ā·reṣWLC · 22

Be careful that you do not forget the covenant of the LORD your God that He made with you; do not make an idol for yourselves in the form of anything He… has forbidden you.

הִשָּׁמְר֣וּ לָכֶ֗ם פֶּֽן־ תִּשְׁכְּחוּ֙ אֶת־ בְּרִ֤ית יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹ֣הֵיכֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר כָּרַ֖ת עִמָּכֶ֑ם וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֨ם פֶּ֙סֶל֙ לָכֶ֥ם תְּמ֣וּנַת כֹּ֔ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ צִוְּךָ֖ hiš·šā·mə·rū lā·ḵem pen- tiš·kə·ḥū ’eṯ- bə·rîṯ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem ’ă·šer kā·raṯ ‘im·mā·ḵem wa·‘ă·śî·ṯem pe·sel lā·ḵem tə·mū·naṯ kōl ’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā ṣiw·wə·ḵāWLC · 23

For the LORD your God is a consuming… fire, a jealous God.

After you have children and grandchildren… and you have been in the land a long time, if you then act corruptly and make an idol of any form— doing evil in the sight of the LORD your God [and] provoking Him to anger—

כִּֽי־ תוֹלִ֤יד בָּנִים֙ וּבְנֵ֣י בָנִ֔ים בָּאָ֑רֶץ וְנוֹשַׁנְתֶּ֖ם וְהִשְׁחַתֶּ֗ם וַעֲשִׂ֤יתֶם פֶּ֙סֶל֙ כֹּ֔ל תְּמ֣וּנַת וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֥ם הָרַ֛ע בְּעֵינֵ֥י יְהוָֽה־ אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ לְהַכְעִיסֽוֹ׃ kî- ṯō·w·lîḏ bā·nîm ū·ḇə·nê ḇā·nîm bā·’ā·reṣ wə·nō·wō·šan·tem wə·hiš·ḥat·tem wa·‘ă·śî·ṯem pe·sel kōl tə·mū·naṯ wa·‘ă·śî·ṯem hā·ra‘ bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh- ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā lə·haḵ·‘î·sōwWLC · 25

I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you this day that you will quickly perish… from the land that you are crossing the Jordan… to possess. You will not live long… upon it, but will be utterly destroyed…

הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם וְאֶת־ הָאָ֗רֶץ הַעִידֹתִי֩ בָכֶ֨ם הַיּ֜וֹם אֶת־ כִּֽי־ מַהֵר֒ אָבֹ֣ד תֹּאבֵדוּן֮ מֵעַ֣ל הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֨ר אַתֶּ֜ם עֹבְרִ֧ים אֶת־ הַיַּרְדֵּ֛ן שָׁ֖מָּה לְרִשְׁתָּ֑הּ לֹֽא־ תַאֲרִיכֻ֤ן יָמִים֙ עָלֶ֔יהָ כִּ֥י הִשָּׁמֵ֖ד תִּשָּׁמֵדֽוּן׃ haš·šā·ma·yim wə·’eṯ- hā·’ā·reṣ ha·‘î·ḏō·ṯî ḇā·ḵem hay·yō·wm ’eṯ- kî- ma·hêr ’ā·ḇōḏ tō·ḇê·ḏūn mê·‘al hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer ’at·tem ‘ō·ḇə·rîm ’eṯ- hay·yar·dên šām·māh lə·riš·tāh lō- ṯa·’ă·rî·ḵun yā·mîm ‘ā·le·hā kî hiš·šā·mêḏ tiš·šā·mê·ḏūnWLC · 26

Then the LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and only a few of you… will survive among the nations to which the LORD - will drive you.

יְהוָ֛ה אֶתְכֶ֖ם וְהֵפִ֧יץ בָּעַמִּ֑ים מְתֵ֣י מִסְפָּ֔ר וְנִשְׁאַרְתֶּם֙ בַּגּוֹיִ֕ם אֲשֶׁ֨ר יְהוָ֛ה אֶתְכֶ֖ם שָֽׁמָּה׃ יְנַהֵ֧ג Yah·weh ’eṯ·ḵem wə·hê·p̄îṣ bā·‘am·mîm mə·ṯê mis·pār wə·niš·’ar·tem bag·gō·w·yim ’ă·šer Yah·weh ’eṯ·ḵem šām·māh yə·na·hêḡWLC · 27

And there you will serve man-made… gods of wood and stone, which cannot see [or] hear [or] eat [or] smell.

שָׁ֣ם וַעֲבַדְתֶּם־ מַעֲשֵׂ֖ה יְדֵ֣י אָדָ֑ם אֱלֹהִ֔ים עֵ֣ץ וָאֶ֔בֶן אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־ יִרְאוּן֙ וְלֹ֣א יִשְׁמְע֔וּן וְלֹ֥א יֹֽאכְל֖וּן וְלֹ֥א יְרִיחֻֽן׃ šām wa·‘ă·ḇaḏ·tem- ma·‘ă·śêh yə·ḏê ’ā·ḏām ’ĕ·lō·hîm ‘êṣ wā·’e·ḇen ’ă·šer lō- yir·’ūn wə·lō yiš·mə·‘ūn wə·lō yō·ḵə·lūn wə·lō yə·rî·ḥunWLC · 28

But if from there you will seek the LORD your God, you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul.

When you are in distress and all these things have happened to you, then in later days you will return to the LORD your God and listen to His voice.

For the LORD your God [is] a merciful God; He will not abandon you [or] destroy you [or] forget the covenant with your fathers, which He swore to them by oath

Indeed, ask now from one end of the heavens to [the other]… about the days that long preceded you, from the day that God created man on earth: Has anything as great as this ever happened or been reported?

He let you hear His voice from heaven to discipline you, and on earth He showed you His great fire, and you heard His words out of the fire.

These [are] the testimonies, statutes, and ordinances that Moses proclaimed to them… after they had come out of Egypt,

אֵ֚לֶּה הָֽעֵדֹ֔ת וְהַֽחֻקִּ֖ים וְהַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֑ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר מֹשֶׁה֙ דִּבֶּ֤ר אֶל־ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בְּצֵאתָ֖ם מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ ’êl·leh hā·‘ê·ḏōṯ wə·ha·ḥuq·qîm wə·ham·miš·pā·ṭîm ’ă·šer mō·šeh dib·ber ’el- bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl bə·ṣê·ṯām mim·miṣ·rā·yimWLC · 45

while they were in the valley across the Jordan facing vvv Beth-peor in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon and was defeated by Moses and the Israelites… after they had come out of Egypt.

בַּגַּ֗יְא בְּעֵ֨בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּ֜ן מ֚וּל בֵּ֣ית פְּע֔וֹר בְּאֶ֗רֶץ סִיחֹן֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ הָֽאֱמֹרִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר יוֹשֵׁ֖ב בְּחֶשְׁבּ֑וֹן הִכָּ֤ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר מֹשֶׁה֙ וּבְנֵֽי יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בְּצֵאתָ֖ם מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ bag·gay bə·‘ê·ḇer hay·yar·dên mūl bêṯ pə·‘ō·wr bə·’e·reṣ sî·ḥōn me·leḵ hā·’ĕ·mō·rî ’ă·šer yō·wō·šêḇ bə·ḥeš·bō·wn hik·kāh ’ă·šer mō·šeh ū·ḇə·nê yiś·rā·’êl bə·ṣê·ṯām mim·miṣ·rā·yimWLC · 46

They took possession of the land [belonging to Sihon] and to Og king of Bashan— the two Amorite kings across the Jordan to the east…—

extending from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Valley as far as Mount Siyon (that is, Hermon),

including all the Arabah on the east side of the Jordan and as far as the Sea of the Arabah, below the slopes of Pisgah.
