Chapter 16

Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread

1

Observe the month of Abib and celebrate the Passover to the LORD your God, because in the month of Abib the LORD your God brought you out of Egypt by night.

𐤔𐤌𐤅𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤐𐤎𐤇 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤄𐤅𐤑𐤉𐤀𐤊 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄

שָׁמוֹר֙ אֶת־ חֹ֣דֶשׁ הָאָבִ֔יב וְעָשִׂ֣יתָ פֶּ֔סַח לַיהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ כִּ֞י בְּחֹ֣דֶשׁ הָֽאָבִ֗יב יְהוָ֧ה אֱלֹהֶ֛יךָ הוֹצִ֨יאֲךָ֜ מִמִּצְרַ֖יִם לָֽיְלָה׃ šā·mō·wr ’eṯ- ḥō·ḏeš hā·’ā·ḇîḇ wə·‘ā·śî·ṯā pe·saḥ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā kî bə·ḥō·ḏeš hā·’ā·ḇîḇ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā hō·w·ṣî·’ă·ḵā mim·miṣ·ra·yim lā·yə·lāhWLC · 1

You are to offer to the LORD your God the Passover sacrifice from the herd or flock in the place the LORD will choose as a dwelling for His Name…

𐤅𐤆𐤁𐤇𐤕 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤐𐤎𐤇 𐤅𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤑𐤀𐤍 𐤁𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤁𐤇𐤓 𐤋𐤔𐤊𐤍 𐤔𐤌𐤅 𐤔𐤌

וְזָבַ֥חְתָּ לַיהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ פֶּ֛סַח וּבָקָ֑ר צֹ֣אן בַּמָּקוֹם֙ אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֔ה יִבְחַ֣ר לְשַׁכֵּ֥ן שְׁמ֖וֹ שָֽׁם׃ wə·zā·ḇaḥ·tā Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā pe·saḥ ū·ḇā·qār ṣōn bam·mā·qō·wm ’ă·šer- Yah·weh yiḇ·ḥar lə·šak·kên šə·mōw šāmWLC · 2

You must not eat leavened bread with it; for seven days you are to eat with it unleavened bread, the bread of affliction, because you left the land of Egypt in haste— so that you may remember - for the rest of your life the day you left the land of Egypt.

לֹא־ תֹאכַ֤ל חָמֵ֔ץ עָלָיו֙ שִׁבְעַ֥ת יָמִ֛ים תֹּֽאכַל־ עָלָ֥יו מַצּ֖וֹת לֶ֣חֶם עֹ֑נִי כִּ֣י יָצָ֙אתָ֙ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם בְחִפָּז֗וֹן לְמַ֣עַן תִּזְכֹּר֔ אֶת־ י֤וֹם כֹּ֖ל חַיֶּֽיךָ׃ יְמֵ֥י צֵֽאתְךָ֙ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם lō- ṯō·ḵal ḥā·mêṣ ‘ā·lāw šiḇ·‘aṯ yā·mîm tō·ḵal- ‘ā·lāw maṣ·ṣō·wṯ le·ḥem ‘ō·nî kî yā·ṣā·ṯā mê·’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim ḇə·ḥip·pā·zō·wn lə·ma·‘an tiz·kōr ’eṯ- yō·wm kōl ḥay·ye·ḵā yə·mê ṣê·ṯə·ḵā mê·’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yimWLC · 3

No leaven is to be found in all your land for seven days, and none of the meat you sacrifice in the evening of the first day shall remain until morning.

וְלֹֽא־ שְׂאֹ֛ר יֵרָאֶ֨ה לְךָ֥ בְּכָל־ גְּבֻלְךָ֖ שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִ֑ים וְלֹא־ מִן־ הַבָּשָׂ֗ר אֲשֶׁ֨ר תִּזְבַּ֥ח בָּעֶ֛רֶב הָרִאשׁ֖וֹן בַּיּ֥וֹם יָלִ֣ין לַבֹּֽקֶר׃ wə·lō- śə·’ōr yê·rā·’eh lə·ḵā bə·ḵāl gə·ḇul·ḵā šiḇ·‘aṯ yā·mîm wə·lō- min- hab·bā·śār ’ă·šer tiz·baḥ bā·‘e·reḇ hā·ri·šō·wn bay·yō·wm yā·lîn lab·bō·qerWLC · 4

You are not… to sacrifice the Passover animal in any of the towns that the LORD your God is giving you.

𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤐𐤎𐤇 𐤁𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤔𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤍𐤕𐤍 𐤋𐤊

לֹ֥א תוּכַ֖ל לִזְבֹּ֣חַ אֶת־ הַפָּ֑סַח בְּאַחַ֣ד שְׁעָרֶ֔יךָ אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לָֽךְ׃ lō ṯū·ḵal liz·bō·aḥ ’eṯ- hap·pā·saḥ bə·’a·ḥaḏ šə·‘ā·re·ḵā ’ă·šer- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā nō·ṯên lāḵWLC · 5

You must only… offer the Passover sacrifice at the place the LORD your God will choose as a dwelling for His Name… Do this in the evening as the sun sets, at the same time you departed from Egypt.

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤌 𐤕𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤐𐤎𐤇 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤉𐤁𐤇𐤓 𐤋𐤔𐤊𐤍 𐤔𐤌𐤅 𐤔𐤌 𐤁𐤏𐤓𐤁 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤔 𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤑𐤀𐤕𐤊 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌

כִּ֠י אִֽם־ תִּזְבַּ֥ח אֶת־ הַפֶּ֖סַח אֶל־ הַמָּק֞וֹם אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ יִבְחַ֨ר לְשַׁכֵּ֣ן שְׁמ֔וֹ שָׁ֛ם בָּעָ֑רֶב הַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁ כְּב֣וֹא מוֹעֵ֖ד צֵֽאתְךָ֥ מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ kî ’im- tiz·baḥ ’eṯ- hap·pe·saḥ ’el- ham·mā·qō·wm ’ă·šer- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā yiḇ·ḥar lə·šak·kên šə·mōw šām bā·‘ā·reḇ haš·še·meš kə·ḇō·w mō·w·‘êḏ ṣê·ṯə·ḵā mim·miṣ·rā·yimWLC · 6

And you shall roast it and eat it in the place the LORD your God will choose, and in the morning you shall return to your tents.

וּבִשַּׁלְתָּ֙ וְאָ֣כַלְתָּ֔ בַּמָּק֕וֹם אֲשֶׁ֥ר יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ בּ֑וֹ וּפָנִ֣יתָ יִבְחַ֛ר בַבֹּ֔קֶר וְהָלַכְתָּ֖ לְאֹהָלֶֽיךָ׃ ū·ḇiš·šal·tā wə·’ā·ḵal·tā bam·mā·qō·wm ’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā bōw ū·p̄ā·nî·ṯā yiḇ·ḥar ḇab·bō·qer wə·hā·laḵ·tā lə·’ō·hā·le·ḵāWLC · 7

For six days you must eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day you shall hold a solemn assembly to the LORD your God, and you must not do any work.

שֵׁ֥שֶׁת יָמִ֖ים תֹּאכַ֣ל מַצּ֑וֹת הַשְּׁבִיעִ֗י וּבַיּ֣וֹם עֲצֶ֙רֶת֙ לַיהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ לֹ֥א תַעֲשֶׂ֖ה מְלָאכָֽה׃ס šê·šeṯ yā·mîm tō·ḵal maṣ·ṣō·wṯ haš·šə·ḇî·‘î ū·ḇay·yō·wm ‘ă·ṣe·reṯ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā lō ṯa·‘ă·śeh mə·lā·ḵāhWLC · 8

The Feast of Weeks

You are to count off seven weeks [from]… [the time] you first put the sickle… to the standing grain…

𐤕𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤋𐤊 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤄 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤋𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤄 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤅𐤕 𐤇𐤓𐤌𐤔 𐤌𐤄𐤇𐤋 𐤁𐤒𐤌𐤄 𐤕𐤇𐤋

תִּסְפָּר־ לָ֑ךְ שִׁבְעָ֥ה שָׁבֻעֹ֖ת לִסְפֹּ֔ר שִׁבְעָ֖ה שָׁבֻעֽוֹת׃ חֶרְמֵשׁ֙ מֵהָחֵ֤ל בַּקָּמָ֔ה תָּחֵ֣ל tis·pār- lāḵ šiḇ·‘āh šā·ḇu·‘ōṯ lis·pōr šiḇ·‘āh šā·ḇu·‘ō·wṯ ḥer·mêš mê·hā·ḥêl baq·qā·māh tā·ḥêlWLC · 9

And you shall celebrate the Feast of Weeks to the LORD your God… with a freewill offering… that you give in proportion to how the LORD your God has blessed you,

𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤇𐤂 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤅𐤕 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤌𐤎𐤕 𐤍𐤃𐤁𐤕 𐤉𐤃𐤊 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤕𐤕𐤍 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤊 𐤉𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤊

וְעָשִׂ֜יתָ חַ֤ג שָׁבֻעוֹת֙ לַיהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ מִסַּ֛ת נִדְבַ֥ת יָדְךָ֖ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תִּתֵּ֑ן כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ יְבָרֶכְךָ֖ wə·‘ā·śî·ṯā ḥaḡ šā·ḇu·‘ō·wṯ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā mis·saṯ niḏ·ḇaṯ yā·ḏə·ḵā ’ă·šer tit·tên ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā yə·ḇā·reḵ·ḵāWLC · 10

and you shall rejoice before the LORD your God in the place He… will choose as a dwelling for His Name…— you, your sons and daughters, your menservants and maidservants, and the Levite within your gates, as well as the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widows among you.

וְשָׂמַחְתָּ֞ לִפְנֵ֣י׀ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ בַּמָּק֗וֹם אֲשֶׁ֤ר יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ יִבְחַר֙ לְשַׁכֵּ֥ן שְׁמ֖וֹ שָֽׁם׃ אַתָּ֨ה וּבִנְךָ֣ וּבִתֶּךָ֮ וְעַבְדְּךָ֣ וַאֲמָתֶךָ֒ וְהַלֵּוִי֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בִּשְׁעָרֶ֔יךָ וְהַגֵּ֛ר וְהַיָּת֥וֹם וְהָאַלְמָנָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּקִרְבֶּ֑ךָ wə·śā·maḥ·tā lip̄·nê Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā bam·mā·qō·wm ’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā yiḇ·ḥar lə·šak·kên šə·mōw šām ’at·tāh ū·ḇin·ḵā ū·ḇit·te·ḵā wə·‘aḇ·də·ḵā wa·’ă·mā·ṯe·ḵā wə·hal·lê·wî ’ă·šer biš·‘ā·re·ḵā wə·hag·gêr wə·hay·yā·ṯō·wm wə·hā·’al·mā·nāh ’ă·šer bə·qir·be·ḵāWLC · 11

Remember that you were slaves in Egypt, and carefully follow these statutes.

וְזָ֣כַרְתָּ֔ כִּי־ הָיִ֖יתָ עֶ֥בֶד בְּמִצְרָ֑יִם וְשָׁמַרְתָּ֣ וְעָשִׂ֔יתָ אֶת־ הָאֵֽלֶּה׃פ הַֽחֻקִּ֖ים wə·zā·ḵar·tā kî- hā·yî·ṯā ‘e·ḇeḏ bə·miṣ·rā·yim wə·šā·mar·tā wə·‘ā·śî·ṯā ’eṯ- hā·’êl·leh ha·ḥuq·qîmWLC · 12

The Feast of Tabernacles

You are to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles for seven days after you have gathered [the produce of] your threshing floor and your winepress.

𐤕𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤊 𐤇𐤂 𐤄𐤎𐤊𐤕 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤎𐤐𐤊 𐤌𐤂𐤓𐤍𐤊 𐤅𐤌𐤉𐤒𐤁𐤊

תַּעֲשֶׂ֥ה לְךָ֖ חַ֧ג הַסֻּכֹּ֛ת שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִ֑ים בְּאָ֨סְפְּךָ֔ מִֽגָּרְנְךָ֖ וּמִיִּקְבֶֽךָ׃ ta·‘ă·śeh lə·ḵā ḥaḡ has·suk·kōṯ šiḇ·‘aṯ yā·mîm bə·’ā·sə·pə·ḵā mig·gā·rə·nə·ḵā ū·mî·yiq·ḇe·ḵāWLC · 13

And you shall rejoice in your feast— you, your sons and daughters, your menservants and maidservants, and the Levite, as well as the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widows among you.

וְשָׂמַחְתָּ֖ בְּחַגֶּ֑ךָ אַתָּ֨ה וּבִנְךָ֤ וּבִתֶּ֙ךָ֙ וְעַבְדְּךָ֣ וַאֲמָתֶ֔ךָ וְהַלֵּוִ֗י וְהַגֵּ֛ר וְהַיָּת֥וֹם וְהָאַלְמָנָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר בִּשְׁעָרֶֽיךָ׃ wə·śā·maḥ·tā bə·ḥag·ge·ḵā ’at·tāh ū·ḇin·ḵā ū·ḇit·te·ḵā wə·‘aḇ·də·ḵā wa·’ă·mā·ṯe·ḵā wə·hal·lê·wî wə·hag·gêr wə·hay·yā·ṯō·wm wə·hā·’al·mā·nāh ’ă·šer biš·‘ā·re·ḵāWLC · 14

For seven days you shall celebrate a feast to the LORD your God in the place He will choose, because the LORD your God will bless you in all your produce and in all the work of your hands, so that your joy will be complete.

שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִ֗ים תָּחֹג֙ לַיהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ בַּמָּק֖וֹם אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֑ה יִבְחַ֣ר כִּ֣י יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ יְבָרֶכְךָ֞ בְּכֹ֤ל תְּבוּאָֽתְךָ֙ וּבְכֹל֙ מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה יָדֶ֔יךָ שָׂמֵֽחַ׃ וְהָיִ֖יתָ אַ֥ךְ šiḇ·‘aṯ yā·mîm tā·ḥōḡ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā bam·mā·qō·wm ’ă·šer- Yah·weh yiḇ·ḥar kî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā yə·ḇā·reḵ·ḵā bə·ḵōl tə·ḇū·’ā·ṯə·ḵā ū·ḇə·ḵōl ma·‘ă·śêh yā·ḏe·ḵā śā·mê·aḥ wə·hā·yî·ṯā ’aḵWLC · 15

Three times a year all your men… are to appear before the LORD your God in the place He will choose: at the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Weeks, and the Feast of Tabernacles. No one should appear… before the LORD empty-handed.

Everyone must appear with a gift as he is able, according to the blessing the LORD your God has given you.

Judges and Justice

You are to appoint judges and officials for your tribes in every town that the LORD your God is giving you. They are to judge the people with righteous judgment.

Do not deny justice or show partiality… Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous.

Pursue justice, and justice alone, so that you may live, and you may possess the land that the LORD your God is giving you.

Do not set up any wooden Asherah pole next to the altar you will build for the LORD your God -,
