Chapter 8
The Lampstand

יְהוָ֖ה וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃ Yah·weh way·ḏab·bêr ’el- mō·šeh lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Speak to Aaron and tell him: ‘When you set up - the seven lamps, they are to light [the area] in front… of the lampstand.’”

דַּבֵּר֙ אֶֽל־ אַהֲרֹ֔ן וְאָמַרְתָּ֖ אֵלָ֑יו בְּהַעֲלֹֽתְךָ֙ אֶת־ הַנֵּרֹ֔ת אֶל־ שִׁבְעַ֥ת הַנֵּרֽוֹת׃ יָאִ֖ירוּ מוּל֙ פְּנֵ֣י הַמְּנוֹרָ֔ה dab·bêr ’el- ’a·hă·rōn wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ê·lāw bə·ha·‘ă·lō·ṯə·ḵā ’eṯ- han·nê·rōṯ ’el- šiḇ·‘aṯ han·nê·rō·wṯ yā·’î·rū mūl pə·nê ham·mə·nō·w·rāh — WLC · 2

And Aaron did so; he set up the lamps facing toward the front of the lampstand, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

אַהֲרֹ֔ן וַיַּ֤עַשׂ כֵּן֙ הֶעֱלָ֖ה נֵרֹתֶ֑יהָ פְּנֵ֣י אֶל־ מוּל֙ הַמְּנוֹרָ֔ה כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֛ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־ צִוָּ֥ה מֹשֶֽׁה׃ ’a·hă·rōn way·ya·‘aś kên he·‘ĕ·lāh nê·rō·ṯe·hā pə·nê ’el- mūl ham·mə·nō·w·rāh ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh ’eṯ- ṣiw·wāh mō·šeh — WLC · 3

This is how the lampstand was constructed: it was made of hammered gold from its base to its blossoms, fashioned - according to the pattern the LORD had shown Moses…

וְזֶ֨ה הַמְּנֹרָה֙ מַעֲשֵׂ֤ה מִקְשָׁ֣ה זָהָ֔ב עַד־ יְרֵכָ֥הּ עַד־ פִּרְחָ֖הּ הַמְּנֹרָֽה׃פ עָשָׂ֖ה אֶת־ מִקְשָׁ֣ה הִ֑וא כַּמַּרְאֶ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר יְהוָה֙ אֶת־ הֶרְאָ֤ה מֹשֶׁ֔ה כֵּ֥ן wə·zeh ham·mə·nō·rāh ma·‘ă·śêh miq·šāh zā·hāḇ ‘aḏ- yə·rê·ḵāh ‘aḏ- pir·ḥāh ham·mə·nō·rāh ‘ā·śāh ’eṯ- miq·šāh hî kam·mar·’eh ’ă·šer Yah·weh ’eṯ- her·’āh mō·šeh kên — WLC · 4
Cleansing the Levites

Again the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
יְהוָ֖ה וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃ Yah·weh way·ḏab·bêr ’el- mō·šeh lê·mōr — WLC · 5

“Take the Levites from among the Israelites… and make them ceremonially clean -.
𐤒𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤈𐤄𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤌
קַ֚ח אֶת־ הַלְוִיִּ֔ם מִתּ֖וֹךְ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְטִהַרְתָּ֖ אֹתָֽם׃ qaḥ ’eṯ- hal·wî·yim mit·tō·wḵ bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl wə·ṭi·har·tā ’ō·ṯām — WLC · 6

This is what you must do to cleanse them: Sprinkle them with the water of purification. Have them shave… their whole bodies and wash their clothes, and so purify themselves.

וְכֹֽה־ תַעֲשֶׂ֤ה לָהֶם֙ לְטַֽהֲרָ֔ם הַזֵּ֥ה עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם מֵ֣י חַטָּ֑את וְהֶעֱבִ֤ירוּ תַ֙עַר֙ עַל־ כָּל־ בְּשָׂרָ֔ם וְכִבְּס֥וּ בִגְדֵיהֶ֖ם וְהִטֶּהָֽרוּ׃ wə·ḵōh- ṯa·‘ă·śeh lā·hem lə·ṭa·hă·rām haz·zêh ‘ă·lê·hem mê ḥaṭ·ṭāṯ wə·he·‘ĕ·ḇî·rū ṯa·‘ar ‘al- kāl- bə·śā·rām wə·ḵib·bə·sū ḇiḡ·ḏê·hem wə·hiṭ·ṭe·hā·rū — WLC · 7

Then have them take a young bull… with its grain offering of fine flour mixed with oil, and you are to take a second… young bull for a sin offering.

וְלָֽקְחוּ֙ פַּ֣ר בֶּן־ בָּקָ֔ר וּמִנְחָת֔וֹ סֹ֖לֶת בְּלוּלָ֣ה בַשָּׁ֑מֶן תִּקַּ֥ח שֵׁנִ֥י בֶן־ בָּקָ֖ר וּפַר־ לְחַטָּֽאת׃ wə·lā·qə·ḥū par ben- bā·qār ū·min·ḥā·ṯōw sō·leṯ bə·lū·lāh ḇaš·šā·men tiq·qaḥ šê·nî ḇen- bā·qār ū·p̄ar- lə·ḥaṭ·ṭāṯ — WLC · 8

Bring the Levites before the Tent of Meeting and assemble the whole congregation… of Israel.
𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤄𐤋𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤃𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋
וְהִקְרַבְתָּ֙ אֶת־ הַלְוִיִּ֔ם לִפְנֵ֖י אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד וְהִ֨קְהַלְתָּ֔ אֶֽת־ כָּל־ עֲדַ֖ת בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ wə·hiq·raḇ·tā ’eṯ- hal·wî·yim lip̄·nê ’ō·hel mō·w·‘êḏ wə·hiq·hal·tā ’eṯ- kāl- ‘ă·ḏaṯ bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 9

You are to present the Levites before the LORD and have the Israelites… lay their hands upon [them].
𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤎𐤌𐤊𐤅 𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌
וְהִקְרַבְתָּ֥ אֶת־ הַלְוִיִּ֖ם לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה בְנֵי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֶת־ וְסָמְכ֧וּ יְדֵיהֶ֖ם עַל־ הַלְוִיִּֽם׃ wə·hiq·raḇ·tā ’eṯ- hal·wî·yim lip̄·nê Yah·weh ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl ’eṯ- wə·sā·mə·ḵū yə·ḏê·hem ‘al- hal·wî·yim — WLC · 10

Aaron is to present the Levites before the LORD… as a wave offering from the sons of Israel,… so that they may perform the service of the LORD.
𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤐 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤀𐤕 𐤕𐤍𐤅𐤐𐤄 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤏𐤁𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
אַהֲרֹ֨ן אֶת־ וְהֵנִיף֩ הַלְוִיִּ֤ם לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה מֵאֵ֖ת תְּנוּפָה֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְהָי֕וּ לַעֲבֹ֖ד אֶת־ עֲבֹדַ֥ת יְהוָֽה׃ ’a·hă·rōn ’eṯ- wə·hê·nîp̄ hal·wî·yim lip̄·nê Yah·weh mê·’êṯ tə·nū·p̄āh bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl wə·hā·yū la·‘ă·ḇōḏ ’eṯ- ‘ă·ḇō·ḏaṯ Yah·weh — WLC · 11

And the Levites are to lay their hands on the heads of the bulls, and offer to the LORD one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering, to make atonement for the Levites.
𐤅𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤎𐤌𐤊𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤓𐤀𐤔 𐤄𐤐𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤋𐤊𐤐𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌
וְהַלְוִיִּם֙ יִסְמְכ֣וּ אֶת־ יְדֵיהֶ֔ם עַ֖ל רֹ֣אשׁ הַפָּרִ֑ים וַ֠עֲשֵׂה אֶת־ לַֽיהוָ֔ה הָאֶחָ֨ד חַטָּ֜את וְאֶת־ הָאֶחָ֤ד עֹלָה֙ לְכַפֵּ֖ר עַל־ הַלְוִיִּֽם׃ wə·hal·wî·yim yis·mə·ḵū ’eṯ- yə·ḏê·hem ‘al rōš hap·pā·rîm wa·‘ă·śêh ’eṯ- Yah·weh hā·’e·ḥāḏ ḥaṭ·ṭāṯ wə·’eṯ- hā·’e·ḥāḏ ‘ō·lāh lə·ḵap·pêr ‘al- hal·wî·yim — WLC · 12

You are to have the Levites stand before Aaron… and his sons and then present them before the LORD as a wave offering.
𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤅𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤐𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤕𐤍𐤅𐤐𐤄
הַלְוִיִּ֔ם וְהַֽעֲמַדְתָּ֙ אֶת־ לִפְנֵ֥י אַהֲרֹ֖ן וְלִפְנֵ֣י בָנָ֑יו וְהֵנַפְתָּ֥ אֹתָ֛ם לַֽיהוָֽה׃ תְּנוּפָ֖ה hal·wî·yim wə·ha·‘ă·maḏ·tā ’eṯ- lip̄·nê ’a·hă·rōn wə·lip̄·nê ḇā·nāw wə·hê·nap̄·tā ’ō·ṯām Yah·weh tə·nū·p̄āh — WLC · 13

In this way you shall separate the Levites from vvv the rest of the Israelites, and the Levites will belong to Me.

וְהִבְדַּלְתָּ֙ אֶת־ הַלְוִיִּ֔ם מִתּ֖וֹךְ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל הַלְוִיִּֽם׃ וְהָ֥יוּ לִ֖י wə·hiḇ·dal·tā ’eṯ- hal·wî·yim mit·tō·wḵ bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl hal·wî·yim wə·hā·yū lî — WLC · 14

After you have cleansed them and presented them as a wave offering, [they] may come to serve at the Tent of Meeting.
𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤊𐤍 𐤅𐤈𐤄𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤐𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤕𐤍𐤅𐤐𐤄 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤋𐤏𐤁𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃
וְאַֽחֲרֵי־ כֵן֙ וְטִֽהַרְתָּ֣ אֹתָ֔ם וְהֵנַפְתָּ֥ אֹתָ֖ם תְּנוּפָֽה׃ הַלְוִיִּ֔ם יָבֹ֣אוּ לַעֲבֹ֖ד אֶת־ אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד wə·’a·ḥă·rê- ḵên wə·ṭi·har·tā ’ō·ṯām wə·hê·nap̄·tā ’ō·ṯām tə·nū·p̄āh hal·wî·yim yā·ḇō·’ū la·‘ă·ḇōḏ ’eṯ- ’ō·hel mō·w·‘êḏ — WLC · 15

For [the Levites] have been wholly given… to Me from among the sons of Israel. I have taken them for Myself in place of all who come first from the womb, the firstborn of all the sons of Israel.
𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤉 𐤌𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤉 𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤐𐤈𐤓𐤕 𐤓𐤇𐤌 𐤁𐤊𐤅𐤓 𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋
כִּי֩ הֵ֙מָּה֙ נְתֻנִ֨ים נְתֻנִ֥ים לִ֔י מִתּ֖וֹךְ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לָקַ֥חְתִּי אֹתָ֖ם לִֽי׃ תַּחַת֩ כָּל־ פִּטְרַ֨ת רֶ֜חֶם בְּכ֥וֹר כֹּל֙ מִבְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל kî hêm·māh nə·ṯu·nîm nə·ṯu·nîm lî mit·tō·wḵ bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl lā·qaḥ·tî ’ō·ṯām lî ta·ḥaṯ kāl- piṭ·raṯ re·ḥem bə·ḵō·wr kōl mib·bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 16

For every firstborn male in Israel is Mine, both man and beast. I set them apart for Myself on the day I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt.
𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤊𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤉 𐤁𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤊𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤊𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌
כִּ֣י כָל־ בְּכוֹר֙ בִּבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לִ֤י בָּאָדָ֖ם וּבַבְּהֵמָ֑ה הִקְדַּ֥שְׁתִּי אֹתָ֖ם לִֽי׃ בְּי֗וֹם הַכֹּתִ֤י כָל־ בְּכוֹר֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם kî ḵāl bə·ḵō·wr biḇ·nê yiś·rā·’êl lî bā·’ā·ḏām ū·ḇab·bə·hê·māh hiq·daš·tî ’ō·ṯām lî bə·yō·wm hak·kō·ṯî ḵāl bə·ḵō·wr bə·’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim — WLC · 17

But I have taken the Levites in place of all the firstborn among the sons of Israel.
𐤅𐤀𐤒𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤊𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋
וָאֶקַּח֙ אֶת־ הַלְוִיִּ֔ם תַּ֥חַת כָּל־ בְּכ֖וֹר בִּבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ wā·’eq·qaḥ ’eṯ- hal·wî·yim ta·ḥaṯ kāl- bə·ḵō·wr biḇ·nê yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 18

And I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron [and] his sons from among vvv the Israelites, to perform the service for the Israelites… at the Tent of Meeting and to make atonement on their… behalf, so that no plague will come against the Israelites… when they… approach the sanctuary.”

So Moses, Aaron, and the whole congregation… of Israel did with the Levites everything that the LORD had commanded Moses… [they]… should do -.

The Levites purified themselves and washed their clothes, and Aaron presented them as a wave offering before the LORD. Aaron also made atonement for them to cleanse them.

After that, the Levites came to perform their service at the Tent of Meeting in the presence of Aaron… and his sons. Thus they did with the Levites just as the LORD had commanded Moses -.

“This applies to the Levites: Men twenty-five… years of age… or older shall enter to perform the service in the work at the Tent of Meeting.

But at the age of fifty,… they must retire from performing the work and no longer serve.

After that, they may assist their brothers in fulfilling their duties at the Tent of Meeting, but they themselves are not to do the work. This is how you are to assign responsibilities to the Levites.”
