Chapter 24

Balaam’s Third Oracle

1

And when Balaam saw that it pleased… the LORD to bless Israel, he did not seek omens as on previous occasions…, but he turned his face toward the wilderness.

𐤁𐤋𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤊𐤉 𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤓𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤍𐤇𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤐𐤏𐤌 𐤁𐤐𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤕 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓

בִּלְעָ֗ם וַיַּ֣רְא כִּ֣י ט֞וֹב בְּעֵינֵ֤י יְהוָה֙ לְבָרֵ֣ךְ אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְלֹא־ הָלַ֥ךְ נְחָשִׁ֑ים כְּפַֽעַם־ בְּפַ֖עַם לִקְרַ֣את וַיָּ֥שֶׁת פָּנָֽיו׃ אֶל־ הַמִּדְבָּ֖ר bil·‘ām way·yar kî ṭō·wḇ bə·‘ê·nê Yah·weh lə·ḇā·rêḵ ’eṯ- yiś·rā·’êl wə·lō- hā·laḵ nə·ḥā·šîm kə·p̄a·‘am- bə·p̄a·‘am liq·raṯ way·yā·šeṯ pā·nāw ’el- ham·miḏ·bārWLC · 1

When Balaam looked up… and saw Israel encamped tribe by tribe, the Spirit of God came upon him,

𐤁𐤋𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤀 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤊𐤍 𐤋𐤔𐤁𐤈𐤉𐤅 𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅

בִלְעָ֜ם אֶת־ וַיִּשָּׂ֨א עֵינָ֗יו וַיַּרְא֙ אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל שֹׁכֵ֖ן לִשְׁבָטָ֑יו ר֥וּחַ אֱלֹהִֽים׃ וַתְּהִ֥י עָלָ֖יו ḇil·‘ām ’eṯ- way·yiś·śā ‘ê·nāw way·yar ’eṯ- yiś·rā·’êl šō·ḵên liš·ḇā·ṭāw rū·aḥ ’ĕ·lō·hîm wat·tə·hî ‘ā·lāwWLC · 2

and he lifted up an oracle, saying: “[This is] the prophecy of Balaam son of Beor, the prophecy of a man whose eyes are open,

וַיִּשָּׂ֥א מְשָׁל֖וֹ וַיֹּאמַ֑ר נְאֻ֤ם בִּלְעָם֙ בְּנ֣וֹ בְעֹ֔ר וּנְאֻ֥ם הַגֶּ֖בֶר הָעָֽיִן׃ שְׁתֻ֥ם way·yiś·śā mə·šā·lōw way·yō·mar nə·’um bil·‘ām bə·nōw ḇə·‘ōr ū·nə·’um hag·ge·ḇer hā·‘ā·yin šə·ṯumWLC · 3

the prophecy of one who hears the words of God, who sees a vision from the Almighty, who bows down with eyes wide open:

𐤍𐤀𐤌 𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤇𐤆𐤄 𐤌𐤇𐤆𐤄 𐤔𐤃𐤉 𐤍𐤐𐤋 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤂𐤋𐤅𐤉

נְאֻ֕ם שֹׁמֵ֖עַ אִמְרֵי־ אֵ֑ל אֲשֶׁ֨ר יֶֽחֱזֶ֔ה מַחֲזֵ֤ה שַׁדַּי֙ נֹפֵ֖ל עֵינָֽיִם׃ וּגְל֥וּי nə·’um šō·mê·a‘ ’im·rê- ’êl ’ă·šer ye·ḥĕ·zeh ma·ḥă·zêh šad·day nō·p̄êl ‘ê·nā·yim ū·ḡə·luiWLC · 4

How lovely are your tents, O Jacob, your dwellings, O Israel!

𐤌𐤄 𐤈𐤁𐤅 𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤍𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋

מַה־ טֹּ֥בוּ אֹהָלֶ֖יךָ יַעֲקֹ֑ב מִשְׁכְּנֹתֶ֖יךָ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ mah- ṭō·ḇū ’ō·hā·le·ḵā ya·‘ă·qōḇ miš·kə·nō·ṯe·ḵā yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 5

They spread out like palm groves, like gardens beside a stream, like aloes the LORD has planted, like cedars beside the waters.

𐤍𐤈𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤍𐤇𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤂𐤍𐤕 𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤍𐤄𐤓 𐤊𐤀𐤄𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤍𐤈𐤏 𐤊𐤀𐤓𐤆𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋𐤉 𐤌𐤉𐤌

נִטָּ֔יוּ כִּנְחָלִ֣ים כְּגַנֹּ֖ת עֲלֵ֣י נָהָ֑ר כַּאֲהָלִים֙ יְהוָ֔ה נָטַ֣ע כַּאֲרָזִ֖ים עֲלֵי־ מָֽיִם׃ niṭ·ṭā·yū kin·ḥā·lîm kə·ḡan·nōṯ ‘ă·lê nā·hār ka·’ă·hā·lîm Yah·weh nā·ṭa‘ ka·’ă·rā·zîm ‘ă·lê- mā·yimWLC · 6

Water will flow from his buckets, and his seed will have abundant water. His king will be greater than Agag, and his kingdom will be exalted.

מַ֙יִם֙ יִֽזַּל־ מִדָּ֣לְיָ֔ו וְזַרְע֖וֹ רַבִּ֑ים בְּמַ֣יִם מַלְכּ֔וֹ וְיָרֹ֤ם מֵֽאֲגַג֙ מַלְכֻתֽוֹ׃ וְתִנַּשֵּׂ֖א ma·yim yiz·zal- mid·dā·lə·yāw wə·zar·‘ōw rab·bîm bə·ma·yim mal·kōw wə·yā·rōm mê·’ă·ḡaḡ mal·ḵu·ṯōw wə·ṯin·naś·śêWLC · 7

God brought him out of Egypt with strength like a wild ox to devour hostile nations and crush their bones, to pierce them with arrows.

אֵ֚ל מוֹצִיא֣וֹ מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם כְּתוֹעֲפֹ֥ת רְאֵ֖ם ל֑וֹ יֹאכַ֞ל צָרָ֗יו גּוֹיִ֣ם יְגָרֵ֖ם וְעַצְמֹתֵיהֶ֛ם יִמְחָֽץ׃ וְחִצָּ֥יו ’êl mō·w·ṣî·’ōw mim·miṣ·ra·yim kə·ṯō·w·‘ă·p̄ōṯ rə·’êm lōw yō·ḵal ṣā·rāw gō·w·yim yə·ḡā·rêm wə·‘aṣ·mō·ṯê·hem yim·ḥāṣ wə·ḥiṣ·ṣāwWLC · 8

He crouches, he lies down like a lion, like a lioness— who dares to rouse him? Blessed are those who bless you and cursed are those who curse you.”

Balak Dismisses Balaam

Then Balak’s anger burned against Balaam, and he struck his hands together and said… to Balaam, “I summoned you to curse my enemies, but behold, you have persisted in blessing [them]… these three times.

בָּלָק֙ אַ֤ף וַיִּֽחַר־ אֶל־ בִּלְעָ֔ם כַּפָּ֑יו וַיִּסְפֹּ֖ק אֶת־ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר בָּלָ֜ק אֶל־ בִּלְעָ֗ם קְרָאתִ֔יךָ לָקֹ֤ב אֹֽיְבַי֙ וְהִנֵּה֙ בֵּרַ֣כְתָּ בָרֵ֔ךְ זֶ֖ה שָׁלֹ֥שׁ פְּעָמִֽים׃ bā·lāq ’ap̄ way·yi·ḥar- ’el- bil·‘ām kap·pāw way·yis·pōq ’eṯ- way·yō·mer bā·lāq ’el- bil·‘ām qə·rā·ṯî·ḵā lā·qōḇ ’ō·yə·ḇay wə·hin·nêh bê·raḵ·tā ḇā·rêḵ zeh šā·lōš pə·‘ā·mîmWLC · 10

Therefore, flee at once to your home! I said I would reward you richly…, but instead the LORD has denied your reward.”

בְּרַח־ וְעַתָּ֖ה אֶל־ לְךָ֣ מְקוֹמֶ֑ךָ אָמַ֙רְתִּי֙ כַּבֵּ֣ד אֲכַבֶּדְךָ֔ וְהִנֵּ֛ה יְהוָ֖ה מְנָעֲךָ֥ מִכָּבֽוֹד׃ bə·raḥ- wə·‘at·tāh ’el- lə·ḵā mə·qō·w·me·ḵā ’ā·mar·tî kab·bêḏ ’ă·ḵab·beḏ·ḵā wə·hin·nêh Yah·weh mə·nā·‘ă·ḵā mik·kā·ḇō·wḏWLC · 11

Balaam… answered Balak, “Did I not already… tell… the messengers you sent me…

בִּלְעָ֖ם אֶל־ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר בָּלָ֑ק הֲלֹ֗א גַּ֧ם אֶל־ דִּבַּ֥רְתִּי לֵאמֹֽר׃ מַלְאָכֶ֛יךָ אֲשֶׁר־ שָׁלַ֥חְתָּ אֵלַ֖י bil·‘ām ’el- way·yō·mer bā·lāq hă·lō gam ’el- dib·bar·tî lê·mōr mal·’ā·ḵe·ḵā ’ă·šer- šā·laḥ·tā ’ê·layWLC · 12

that even if Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the LORD? I must speak whatever the LORD says.

אִם־ בָלָ֜ק יִתֶּן־ לִ֨י בֵיתוֹ֮ מְלֹ֣א כֶּ֣סֶף וְזָהָב֒ אוּכַ֗ל לֹ֣א לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת מִלִּבִּ֑י טוֹבָ֛ה א֥וֹ רָעָ֖ה לַעֲבֹר֙ פִּ֣י אֶת־ יְהוָ֔ה יְדַבֵּ֥ר אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֖ה אֹת֥וֹ אֲדַבֵּֽר׃ ’im- ḇā·lāq yit·ten- lî ḇê·ṯōw mə·lō ke·sep̄ wə·zā·hāḇ ’ū·ḵal lō la·‘ă·śō·wṯ mil·lib·bî ṭō·w·ḇāh ’ōw rā·‘āh la·‘ă·ḇōr pî ’eṯ- Yah·weh yə·ḏab·bêr ’ă·šer- Yah·weh ’ō·ṯōw ’ă·ḏab·bêrWLC · 13

Now… I am going back to my people, but come, let me warn you what this people will do to your people in the days to come.”

וְעַתָּ֕ה הִנְנִ֥י הוֹלֵ֖ךְ לְעַמִּ֑י לְכָה֙ אִיעָ֣צְךָ֔ אֲשֶׁ֨ר הַזֶּ֛ה הָעָ֥ם יַעֲשֶׂ֜ה לְעַמְּךָ֖ הַיָּמִֽים׃ בְּאַחֲרִ֥ית wə·‘at·tāh hin·nî hō·w·lêḵ lə·‘am·mî lə·ḵāh ’î·‘ā·ṣə·ḵā ’ă·šer haz·zeh hā·‘ām ya·‘ă·śeh lə·‘am·mə·ḵā hay·yā·mîm bə·’a·ḥă·rîṯWLC · 14

Balaam’s Fourth Oracle

the prophecy of one who hears the words of God, who has knowledge… from the Most High, who sees a vision from the Almighty, who bows down with eyes wide open:

I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come forth from Jacob, and a scepter will arise from Israel. He will crush the skulls of Moab and strike down all the sons of Sheth.

אֶרְאֶ֙נּוּ֙ וְלֹ֣א עַתָּ֔ה אֲשׁוּרֶ֖נּוּ וְלֹ֣א קָר֑וֹב כּוֹכָ֜ב דָּרַ֨ךְ מִֽיַּעֲקֹ֗ב שֵׁ֙בֶט֙ וְקָ֥ם מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וּמָחַץ֙ פַּאֲתֵ֣י מוֹאָ֔ב וְקַרְקַ֖ר כָּל־ בְּנֵי־ שֵׁ֔ת׃ ’er·’en·nū wə·lō ‘at·tāh ’ă·šū·ren·nū wə·lō qā·rō·wḇ kō·w·ḵāḇ dā·raḵ mî·ya·‘ă·qōḇ šê·ḇeṭ wə·qām mî·yiś·rā·’êl ū·mā·ḥaṣ pa·’ă·ṯê mō·w·’āḇ wə·qar·qar kāl- bə·nê- šēṯWLC · 17

Edom will become a possession, [as] will Seir, his enemy; but Israel will perform with valor.

אֱד֜וֹם וְהָיָ֨ה יְרֵשָׁ֗ה יְרֵשָׁ֛ה וְהָיָ֧ה שֵׂעִ֖יר אֹיְבָ֑יו וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל עֹ֥שֶׂה חָֽיִל׃ ’ĕ·ḏō·wm wə·hā·yāh yə·rê·šāh yə·rê·šāh wə·hā·yāh śê·‘îr ’ō·yə·ḇāw wə·yiś·rā·’êl ‘ō·śeh ḥā·yilWLC · 18

A ruler will come from Jacob and destroy the survivors of the city.”

Then Balaam saw Amalek and lifted up an oracle, saying: “Amalek was first among the nations, but his end… [is] destruction.”

וַיַּרְא֙ אֶת־ עֲמָלֵ֔ק וַיִּשָּׂ֥א מְשָׁל֖וֹ וַיֹּאמַ֑ר עֲמָלֵ֔ק רֵאשִׁ֤ית גּוֹיִם֙ וְאַחֲרִית֖וֹ עֲדֵ֥י אֹבֵֽד׃ way·yar ’eṯ- ‘ă·mā·lêq way·yiś·śā mə·šā·lōw way·yō·mar ‘ă·mā·lêq rê·šîṯ gō·w·yim wə·’a·ḥă·rî·ṯōw ‘ă·ḏê ’ō·ḇêḏWLC · 20

Next he saw the Kenites and lifted up an oracle, saying: “Your dwelling place is secure, and your nest is set in a cliff.

𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤒𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤀 𐤌𐤔𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤊 𐤀𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤒𐤍𐤊 𐤅𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤎𐤋𐤏

וַיַּרְא֙ אֶת־ הַקֵּינִ֔י וַיִּשָּׂ֥א מְשָׁל֖וֹ וַיֹּאמַ֑ר מֽוֹשָׁבֶ֔ךָ אֵיתָן֙ קִנֶּֽךָ׃ וְשִׂ֥ים בַּסֶּ֖לַע way·yar ’eṯ- haq·qê·nî way·yiś·śā mə·šā·lōw way·yō·mar mō·wō·šā·ḇe·ḵā ’ê·ṯān qin·ne·ḵā wə·śîm bas·se·la‘WLC · 21

Yet… Kain will be destroyed when… Asshur takes you captive.”

כִּ֥י אִם־ קָ֑יִן יִהְיֶ֖ה לְבָ֣עֵֽר עַד־ מָ֖ה אַשּׁ֥וּר תִּשְׁבֶּֽךָּ׃ kî ’im- qā·yin yih·yeh lə·ḇā·‘êr ‘aḏ- māh ’aš·šūr tiš·be·kāWLC · 22

Once more [Balaam] lifted up an oracle, saying: “Ah, who can live unless God has ordained it?

𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤀 𐤌𐤔𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤅𐤉 𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤇𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤌𐤅

וַיִּשָּׂ֥א מְשָׁל֖וֹ וַיֹּאמַ֑ר א֕וֹי מִ֥י יִחְיֶ֖ה אֵֽל׃ מִשֻּׂמ֥וֹ way·yiś·śā mə·šā·lōw way·yō·mar ’ō·w mî yiḥ·yeh ’êl miś·śu·mōwWLC · 23

Ships [will come] from the coasts of Cyprus; they will subdue Asshur… and Eber, but they too will perish forever.”

וְצִים֙ מִיַּ֣ד כִּתִּ֔ים וְעִנּ֥וּ אַשּׁ֖וּר וְעִנּוּ־ עֵ֑בֶר ה֖וּא וְגַם־ אֹבֵֽד׃ עֲדֵ֥י wə·ṣîm mî·yaḏ kit·tîm wə·‘in·nū ’aš·šūr wə·‘in·nū- ‘ê·ḇer hū wə·ḡam- ’ō·ḇêḏ ‘ă·ḏêWLC · 24

Then Balaam arose vvv and returned to his homeland, and Balak also went on his way.
