Balak Summons Balaam

Then the Israelites… traveled on and camped in the plains of Moab near the Jordan, across from Jericho.

Now Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites,

בָּלָ֖ק בֶּן־ צִפּ֑וֹר אֵ֛ת וַיַּ֥רְא כָּל־ אֲשֶׁר־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל עָשָׂ֥ה לָֽאֱמֹרִֽי׃ bā·lāq ben- ṣip·pō·wr ’êṯ way·yar kāl- ’ă·šer- yiś·rā·’êl ‘ā·śāh lā·’ĕ·mō·rî — WLC · 2

and Moab was terrified of the people… because they were numerous. Indeed, Moab… dreaded the Israelites…

מוֹאָ֜ב וַיָּ֨גָר מִפְּנֵ֥י הָעָ֛ם מְאֹ֖ד כִּ֣י ה֑וּא רַב־ מוֹאָ֔ב מִפְּנֵ֖י וַיָּ֣קָץ בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ mō·w·’āḇ way·yā·ḡār mip·pə·nê hā·‘ām mə·’ōḏ kî hū raḇ- mō·w·’āḇ mip·pə·nê way·yā·qāṣ bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 3

So the Moabites said to the elders of Midian,… “This horde will devour everything around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.” Since Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time,

מוֹאָ֜ב וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ זִקְנֵ֣י מִדְיָ֗ן עַתָּ֞ה הַקָּהָל֙ אֶת־ יְלַחֲכ֤וּ כָּל־ סְבִ֣יבֹתֵ֔ינוּ הַשּׁ֔וֹר אֵ֖ת כִּלְחֹ֣ךְ יֶ֣רֶק הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה וּבָלָ֧ק בֶּן־ צִפּ֛וֹר מֶ֥לֶךְ לְמוֹאָ֖ב הַהִֽוא׃ בָּעֵ֥ת mō·w·’āḇ way·yō·mer ’el- ziq·nê miḏ·yān ‘at·tāh haq·qā·hāl ’eṯ- yə·la·ḥă·ḵū kāl- sə·ḇî·ḇō·ṯê·nū haš·šō·wr ’êṯ kil·ḥōḵ ye·req haś·śā·ḏeh ū·ḇā·lāq ben- ṣip·pō·wr me·leḵ lə·mō·w·’āḇ ha·hi·w bā·‘êṯ — WLC · 4

he sent messengers to {summon} Balaam son of Beor at Pethor, which is by the Euphrates in the land of his people… “Behold, a people has come out of Egypt,” said Balak “- They cover the face of the land… and have settled next to me.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח מַלְאָכִ֜ים אֶל־ בִּלְעָ֣ם בֶּן־ בְּע֗וֹר פְּ֠תוֹרָה אֲשֶׁ֧ר עַל־ הַנָּהָ֛ר אֶ֥רֶץ בְּנֵי־ עַמּ֖וֹ הִ֠נֵּה עַ֣ם יָצָ֤א מִמִּצְרַ֙יִם֙ לִקְרֹא־ ל֑וֹ לֵאמֹ֗ר הִנֵּ֤ה כִסָּה֙ אֶת־ עֵ֣ין הָאָ֔רֶץ וְה֥וּא יֹשֵׁ֖ב מִמֻּלִֽי׃ way·yiš·laḥ mal·’ā·ḵîm ’el- bil·‘ām ben- bə·‘ō·wr pə·ṯō·w·rāh ’ă·šer ‘al- han·nā·hār ’e·reṣ bə·nê- ‘am·mōw hin·nêh ‘am yā·ṣā mim·miṣ·ra·yim liq·rō- lōw lê·mōr hin·nêh ḵis·sāh ’eṯ- ‘ên hā·’ā·reṣ wə·hū yō·šêḇ mim·mu·lî — WLC · 5

So please come now and put a curse on this people, because they are too mighty for me. Perhaps I may be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land; for I know that those you bless are blessed, and those you curse are cursed.”

נָּ֨א לְכָה־ וְעַתָּה֩ אָֽרָה־ לִּ֜י אֶת־ הַזֶּ֗ה הָעָ֣ם כִּֽי־ הוּא֙ עָצ֥וּם מִמֶּ֔נִּי אוּלַ֤י אוּכַל֙ נַכֶּה־ בּ֔וֹ וַאֲגָרְשֶׁ֖נּוּ מִן־ הָאָ֑רֶץ כִּ֣י יָדַ֗עְתִּי אֵ֤ת אֲשֶׁר־ תְּבָרֵךְ֙ מְבֹרָ֔ךְ וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר תָּאֹ֖ר יוּאָֽר׃ nā lə·ḵāh- wə·‘at·tāh ’ā·rāh- lî ’eṯ- haz·zeh hā·‘ām kî- hū ‘ā·ṣūm mim·men·nî ’ū·lay ’ū·ḵal nak·keh- bōw wa·’ă·ḡā·rə·šen·nū min- hā·’ā·reṣ kî yā·ḏa‘·tî ’êṯ ’ă·šer- tə·ḇā·rêḵ mə·ḇō·rāḵ wa·’ă·šer tā·’ōr yū·’ār — WLC · 6

The elders of Moab… and Midian departed with the fees for divination in hand. They came to Balaam and relayed to him the words of Balak.
𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤅𐤀𐤁 𐤅𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤃𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤅𐤒𐤎𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤋𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤁𐤋𐤒
זִקְנֵ֤י מוֹאָב֙ וְזִקְנֵ֣י מִדְיָ֔ן וַיֵּ֨לְכ֜וּ וּקְסָמִ֖ים בְּיָדָ֑ם וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ אֶל־ בִּלְעָ֔ם וַיְדַבְּר֥וּ אֵלָ֖יו דִּבְרֵ֥י בָלָֽק׃ ziq·nê mō·w·’āḇ wə·ziq·nê miḏ·yān way·yê·lə·ḵū ū·qə·sā·mîm bə·yā·ḏām way·yā·ḇō·’ū ’el- bil·‘ām way·ḏab·bə·rū ’ê·lāw diḇ·rê ḇā·lāq — WLC · 7

“Spend the night here,” [Balaam] replied…, “and I will give you the answer that the LORD speaks to me.” So the princes of Moab stayed with Balaam.

לִ֤ינוּ הַלַּ֔יְלָה פֹה֙ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם וַהֲשִׁבֹתִ֤י אֶתְכֶם֙ דָּבָ֔ר כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר יְהוָ֖ה יְדַבֵּ֥ר אֵלָ֑י שָׂרֵֽי־ מוֹאָ֖ב וַיֵּשְׁב֥וּ עִם־ בִּלְעָֽם׃ lî·nū hal·lay·lāh p̄ōh way·yō·mer ’ă·lê·hem wa·hă·ši·ḇō·ṯî ’eṯ·ḵem dā·ḇār ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh yə·ḏab·bêr ’ê·lāy śā·rê- mō·w·’āḇ way·yê·šə·ḇū ‘im- bil·‘ām — WLC · 8

Then God came to Balaam and asked, “Who are these men with you?”

אֱלֹהִ֖ים וַיָּבֹ֥א אֶל־ בִּלְעָ֑ם וַיֹּ֕אמֶר מִ֛י הָאֵ֖לֶּה הָאֲנָשִׁ֥ים עִמָּֽךְ׃ ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yā·ḇō ’el- bil·‘ām way·yō·mer mî hā·’êl·leh hā·’ă·nā·šîm ‘im·māḵ — WLC · 9

And Balaam said to God, “Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent me this message:
𐤁𐤋𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤋𐤒 𐤁𐤍 𐤑𐤐𐤓 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤅𐤀𐤁 𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤀𐤋𐤉
בִּלְעָ֖ם וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֶל־ הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים בָּלָ֧ק בֶּן־ צִפֹּ֛ר מֶ֥לֶךְ מוֹאָ֖ב שָׁלַ֥ח אֵלָֽי׃ bil·‘ām way·yō·mer ’el- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm bā·lāq ben- ṣip·pōr me·leḵ mō·w·’āḇ šā·laḥ ’ê·lāy — WLC · 10

‘Behold, a people has come out of Egypt, and they cover the face of the land. Now come and put a curse on them for me. Perhaps I may be able to fight against them and drive them away.’”

הִנֵּ֤ה הָעָם֙ הַיֹּצֵ֣א מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם וַיְכַ֖ס אֶת־ עֵ֣ין הָאָ֑רֶץ עַתָּ֗ה לְכָ֤ה קָֽבָה־ אֹת֔וֹ לִּי֙ אוּלַ֥י אוּכַ֛ל לְהִלָּ֥חֶם בּ֖וֹ וְגֵרַשְׁתִּֽיו׃ hin·nêh hā·‘ām hay·yō·ṣê mim·miṣ·ra·yim way·ḵas ’eṯ- ‘ên hā·’ā·reṣ ‘at·tāh lə·ḵāh qā·ḇāh- ’ō·ṯōw lî ’ū·lay ’ū·ḵal lə·hil·lā·ḥem bōw wə·ḡê·raš·tîw — WLC · 11

But God said to Balaam, “Do not go with them. You are not to curse this people, for they are blessed.”

אֱלֹהִים֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ בִּלְעָ֔ם לֹ֥א תֵלֵ֖ךְ עִמָּהֶ֑ם לֹ֤א תָאֹר֙ אֶת־ הָעָ֔ם כִּ֥י הֽוּא׃ בָר֖וּךְ ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yō·mer ’el- bil·‘ām lō ṯê·lêḵ ‘im·mā·hem lō ṯā·’ōr ’eṯ- hā·‘ām kî hū ḇā·rūḵ — WLC · 12

So Balaam got up the next morning and said to Balak’s princes, “Go back to your homeland, because the LORD has refused to let me go with you.”

בִּלְעָם֙ וַיָּ֤קָם בַּבֹּ֔קֶר וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אֶל־ בָלָ֔ק שָׂרֵ֣י לְכ֖וּ אֶֽל־ אַרְצְכֶ֑ם כִּ֚י יְהוָ֔ה מֵאֵ֣ן לְתִתִּ֖י לַהֲלֹ֥ךְ עִמָּכֶֽם׃ bil·‘ām way·yā·qām bab·bō·qer way·yō·mer ’el- ḇā·lāq śā·rê lə·ḵū ’el- ’ar·ṣə·ḵem kî Yah·weh mê·’ên lə·ṯit·tî la·hă·lōḵ ‘im·mā·ḵem — WLC · 13

And the princes of Moab arose, returned to Balak, and said, “Balaam refused to come with us.”

שָׂרֵ֣י מוֹאָ֔ב וַיָּק֙וּמוּ֙ וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ אֶל־ בָּלָ֑ק וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ בִּלְעָ֖ם מֵאֵ֥ן הֲלֹ֥ךְ עִמָּֽנוּ׃ śā·rê mō·w·’āḇ way·yā·qū·mū way·yā·ḇō·’ū ’el- bā·lāq way·yō·mə·rū bil·‘ām mê·’ên hă·lōḵ ‘im·mā·nū — WLC · 14

Then Balak sent other princes,… more numerous and more distinguished than the [first messengers].
𐤁𐤋𐤒 𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤐 𐤔𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤅𐤃 𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤊𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤋𐤄
בָּלָ֑ק שְׁלֹ֣חַ וַיֹּ֥סֶף שָׂרִ֔ים ע֖וֹד רַבִּ֥ים וְנִכְבָּדִ֖ים מֵאֵֽלֶּה׃ bā·lāq šə·lō·aḥ way·yō·sep̄ śā·rîm ‘ō·wḏ rab·bîm wə·niḵ·bā·ḏîm mê·’êl·leh — WLC · 15

They came to Balaam and said “This is what Balak son of Zippor says: ‘Please let nothing hinder you from coming to me,
𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤋𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤅 𐤊𐤄 𐤁𐤋𐤒 𐤁𐤍 𐤑𐤐𐤅𐤓 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤍𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤌𐤍𐤏 𐤌𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤋𐤉
וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ אֶל־ בִּלְעָ֑ם וַיֹּ֣אמְרוּ ל֗וֹ כֹּ֤ה בָּלָ֣ק בֶּן־ צִפּ֔וֹר אָמַר֙ נָ֥א אַל־ תִמָּנַ֖ע מֵהֲלֹ֥ךְ אֵלָֽי׃ way·yā·ḇō·’ū ’el- bil·‘ām way·yō·mə·rū lōw kōh bā·lāq ben- ṣip·pō·wr ’ā·mar nā ’al- ṯim·mā·na‘ mê·hă·lōḵ ’ê·lāy — WLC · 16

for I will honor you richly… and do whatever you say… So please come and put a curse on this people for me!’”
𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤁𐤃 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤀𐤊𐤁𐤃𐤊 𐤀𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤍𐤀 𐤅𐤋𐤊𐤄 𐤒𐤁𐤄 𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤌
כִּֽי־ כַבֵּ֤ד מְאֹ֔ד אֲכַבֶּדְךָ֙ אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֑ה וְכֹ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־ תֹּאמַ֥ר אֵלַ֖י נָּא֙ וּלְכָה־ קָֽבָה־ לִּ֔י אֵ֖ת הַזֶּֽה׃ הָעָ֥ם kî- ḵab·bêḏ mə·’ōḏ ’ă·ḵab·beḏ·ḵā ’e·‘ĕ·śeh wə·ḵōl ’ă·šer- tō·mar ’ê·lay nā ū·lə·ḵāh- qā·ḇāh- lî ’êṯ haz·zeh hā·‘ām — WLC · 17

But Balaam… replied to the servants of Balak, “If Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not do anything small or great to go beyond the command of the LORD my God.

That night God came to Balaam and said “Since these men have come to summon you, get up and go with them, but you must only - do what I tell you… -.”

So in the morning Balaam got up, saddled his donkey, and went with the princes of Moab.

The Angel and Balaam’s Donkey

Then God’s anger was kindled because Balaam was going along, and the angel of the LORD stood in the road to oppose him. Balaam was riding… his donkey, and his two servants were with him.

When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, she turned off the path and went into a field. So Balaam beat her to return her to the path.

Then the angel of the LORD stood in a narrow passage between two vineyards, with walls on either side…

And the donkey saw the angel of the LORD and pressed herself against the wall, crushing Balaam’s foot against it. So he beat her once again.

And the angel of the LORD moved on ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn to the right or left.

When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, she lay down under Balaam, and [he] became furious… and beat [her] with his staff.

Then the LORD opened the donkey’s mouth, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you that you have beaten me these three times?”

Balaam answered the donkey,… “You have made a fool of me! If I had a sword in my hand,… I would kill you right now!”

But the donkey… said to Balaam, “Am I not the donkey you have ridden… all your life until today…?… Have I ever treated you this way before…?” “No,” he replied.

Then the LORD opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand. And Balaam bowed low… and fell facedown.

The angel of the LORD asked him,… “Why… have you beaten your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out to oppose you, because your way is perverse before me.

“I have sinned,” Balaam said to the angel of the LORD, “for I did not realize that you were standing in the road to confront me. And now, if this is displeasing in your sight, I will go back [home].”

But the angel of the LORD said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but you are to speak… only - what I tell you.” So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

When Balak heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at the Moabite city on the Arnon border, at the edge of his territory.

And [he] said to Balaam, “Did I not send you an urgent summons…? Why vvv did you not come to me? Am I really not able to reward you richly?”

“See, I have come to you,” Balaam replied -, “-… but can I say just anything? I must speak only the word that God puts in my mouth.” -

So Balaam accompanied… Balak, and they came vvv to Kiriath-huzoth.

Balak sacrificed cattle and sheep, and he gave [portions] to Balaam and the princes who were with him.

vvv The next morning, Balak took Balaam and brought him up to Bamoth-baal. From there he could see the outskirts of the camp of the people.
