Water from the Rock

In the first month, the whole congregation… of Israel entered the Wilderness of Zin [and] stayed in Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried…

Now there was no water for the congregation, so they gathered against Moses… and Aaron.

The people quarreled with Moses and said…, “If only we had perished… with our brothers before the LORD!

הָעָ֖ם וַיָּ֥רֶב עִם־ מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ לֵאמֹ֔ר וְל֥וּ גָוַ֛עְנוּ בִּגְוַ֥ע אַחֵ֖ינוּ לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ hā·‘ām way·yā·reḇ ‘im- mō·šeh way·yō·mə·rū lê·mōr wə·lū ḡā·wa‘·nū biḡ·wa‘ ’a·ḥê·nū lip̄·nê Yah·weh — WLC · 3

Why have you brought the LORD’s assembly into this wilderness for us and our livestock to die here?

וְלָמָ֤ה הֲבֵאתֶם֙ אֶת־ יְהוָ֔ה קְהַ֣ל אֶל־ הַזֶּ֑ה הַמִּדְבָּ֖ר אֲנַ֖חְנוּ וּבְעִירֵֽנוּ׃ לָמ֣וּת שָׁ֔ם wə·lā·māh hă·ḇê·ṯem ’eṯ- Yah·weh qə·hal ’el- haz·zeh ham·miḏ·bār ’ă·naḥ·nū ū·ḇə·‘î·rê·nū lā·mūṯ šām — WLC · 4

Why have you led us up out of Egypt to bring us to this wretched place? It is not a place of grain, figs, vines, or pomegranates— and there is no water to drink!”

Then Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. They fell facedown…, and the glory of the LORD appeared to them.

יְהוָ֖ה וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃ Yah·weh way·ḏab·bêr ’el- mō·šeh lê·mōr — WLC · 7

“Take the staff and assemble the congregation. You and your brother Aaron are to speak to the rock while they watch, and it will pour out its water. You will bring out water from the rock and provide drink for the congregation and their livestock.”

קַ֣ח אֶת־ הַמַּטֶּ֗ה וְהַקְהֵ֤ל אֶת־ הָעֵדָה֙ אַתָּה֙ אָחִ֔יךָ וְאַהֲרֹ֣ן וְדִבַּרְתֶּ֧ם אֶל־ הַסֶּ֛לַע לְעֵינֵיהֶ֖ם וְנָתַ֣ן מֵימָ֑יו וְהוֹצֵאתָ֨ לָהֶ֥ם מַ֙יִם֙ מִן־ הַסֶּ֔לַע וְהִשְׁקִיתָ֥ אֶת־ הָעֵדָ֖ה וְאֶת־ בְּעִירָֽם׃ qaḥ ’eṯ- ham·maṭ·ṭeh wə·haq·hêl ’eṯ- hā·‘ê·ḏāh ’at·tāh ’ā·ḥî·ḵā wə·’a·hă·rōn wə·ḏib·bar·tem ’el- has·se·la‘ lə·‘ê·nê·hem wə·nā·ṯan mê·māw wə·hō·w·ṣê·ṯā lā·hem ma·yim min- has·se·la‘ wə·hiš·qî·ṯā ’eṯ- hā·‘ê·ḏāh wə·’eṯ- bə·‘î·rām — WLC · 8

So Moses took the staff from the LORD’s presence, just as he had been commanded.

מֹשֶׁ֛ה אֶת־ וַיִּקַּ֥ח הַמַּטֶּ֖ה יְהוָ֑ה מִלִּפְנֵ֣י כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר צִוָּֽהוּ׃ mō·šeh ’eṯ- way·yiq·qaḥ ham·maṭ·ṭeh Yah·weh mil·lip̄·nê ka·’ă·šer ṣiw·wā·hū — WLC · 9

Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly in front of the rock, and [Moses] said to them, “Listen now, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?”

מֹשֶׁ֧ה וְאַהֲרֹ֛ן אֶת־ וַיַּקְהִ֜לוּ הַקָּהָ֖ל אֶל־ פְּנֵ֣י הַסָּ֑לַע וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֗ם שִׁמְעוּ־ נָא֙ הַמֹּרִ֔ים מָֽיִם׃ לָכֶ֖ם נוֹצִ֥יא הֲמִן־ הַזֶּ֔ה הַסֶּ֣לַע mō·šeh wə·’a·hă·rōn ’eṯ- way·yaq·hi·lū haq·qā·hāl ’el- pə·nê has·sā·la‘ way·yō·mer lā·hem šim·‘ū- nā ham·mō·rîm mā·yim lā·ḵem nō·w·ṣî hă·min- haz·zeh has·se·la‘ — WLC · 10

Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with his staff, so that a great amount of water gushed out, and the congregation and their livestock were able to drink.

מֹשֶׁ֜ה אֶת־ וַיָּ֨רֶם יָד֗וֹ וַיַּ֧ךְ אֶת־ הַסֶּ֛לַע פַּעֲמָ֑יִם בְּמַטֵּ֖הוּ רַבִּ֔ים מַ֣יִם וַיֵּצְאוּ֙ הָעֵדָ֖ה וּבְעִירָֽם׃ס וַתֵּ֥שְׁתְּ mō·šeh ’eṯ- way·yā·rem yā·ḏōw way·yaḵ ’eṯ- has·se·la‘ pa·‘ă·mā·yim bə·maṭ·ṭê·hū rab·bîm ma·yim way·yê·ṣə·’ū hā·‘ê·ḏāh ū·ḇə·‘î·rām wat·tê·šət — WLC · 11

But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust Me to show My holiness in the sight vvv of the Israelites,… you will not bring this… assembly into the land that I have given them.”

יְהוָה֮ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֣ה וְאֶֽל־ אַהֲרֹן֒ יַ֚עַן לֹא־ הֶאֱמַנְתֶּ֣ם בִּ֔י לְהַ֨קְדִּישֵׁ֔נִי לְעֵינֵ֖י בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לָכֵ֗ן לֹ֤א תָבִ֙יאוּ֙ אֶת־ הַזֶּ֔ה אֶל־ הַקָּהָ֣ל הָאָ֖רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־ נָתַ֥תִּי לָהֶֽם׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- mō·šeh wə·’el- ’a·hă·rōn ya·‘an lō- he·’ĕ·man·tem bî lə·haq·dî·šê·nî lə·‘ê·nê bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl lā·ḵên lō ṯā·ḇî·’ū ’eṯ- haz·zeh ’el- haq·qā·hāl hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer- nā·ṯat·tî lā·hem — WLC · 12

These were the waters of Meribah, where the Israelites… quarreled with the LORD, and He showed His holiness among them.

Edom Refuses Passage

From Kadesh, Moses sent messengers to [tell] the king of Edom, “This is what your brother Israel says: You know all the hardship that has befallen us,
𐤌𐤒𐤃𐤔 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤃𐤅𐤌 𐤊𐤄 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤕𐤋𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤅

how our fathers went down to Egypt, where we lived many years. The Egyptians mistreated us and our fathers,

אֲבֹתֵ֙ינוּ֙ וַיֵּרְד֤וּ מִצְרַ֔יְמָה וַנֵּ֥שֶׁב בְּמִצְרַ֖יִם רַבִּ֑ים יָמִ֣ים מִצְרַ֖יִם וַיָּרֵ֥עוּ לָ֛נוּ וְלַאֲבֹתֵֽינוּ׃ ’ă·ḇō·ṯê·nū way·yê·rə·ḏū miṣ·ray·māh wan·nê·šeḇ bə·miṣ·ra·yim rab·bîm yā·mîm miṣ·ra·yim way·yā·rê·‘ū lā·nū wə·la·’ă·ḇō·ṯê·nū — WLC · 15

and when we cried out to the LORD, He heard our voice, sent an angel, and brought us out of Egypt. Now look, we are in Kadesh, a city on the edge of your territory.

וַנִּצְעַ֤ק אֶל־ יְהוָה֙ וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע קֹלֵ֔נוּ וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח מַלְאָ֔ךְ וַיֹּצִאֵ֖נוּ מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם וְהִנֵּה֙ אֲנַ֣חְנוּ בְקָדֵ֔שׁ עִ֖יר קְצֵ֥ה גְבוּלֶֽךָ׃ wan·niṣ·‘aq ’el- Yah·weh way·yiš·ma‘ qō·lê·nū way·yiš·laḥ mal·’āḵ way·yō·ṣi·’ê·nū mim·miṣ·rā·yim wə·hin·nêh ’ă·naḥ·nū ḇə·qā·ḏêš ‘îr qə·ṣêh ḡə·ḇū·le·ḵā — WLC · 16

Please let us pass through your land. We will not go through any field or vineyard, [or] drink water from any well. We will stay on the King’s Highway; we will not turn to the right or to the left until we have passed through your territory.”

But Edom answered,… “You may not travel through our land, or we will come out and confront you with the sword.”

“We will stay on the main road,” the Israelites… replied -, “and if we or our herds drink your water, we will pay for it. There will be no problem; only let us pass through on foot.”

But Edom insisted, “You may not pass through.” And they came out to confront [the Israelites] with a large army and a strong hand.

So Edom refused to allow Israel to pass through their territory, and Israel turned away from them.

The Death of Aaron

After they had set out from Kadesh, the whole congregation… of Israel came to Mount Hor.

וַיִּסְע֖וּ מִקָּדֵ֑שׁ כָּל־ הָעֵדָ֖ה בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל וַיָּבֹ֧אוּ הָהָֽר׃ הֹ֥ר way·yis·‘ū miq·qā·ḏêš kāl- hā·‘ê·ḏāh ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl way·yā·ḇō·’ū hā·hār hōr — WLC · 22

And at Mount Hor, near the border of the land of Edom, the LORD said to Moses… and Aaron, -

“Aaron will be gathered to his people;… he will not enter… the land that I have given the Israelites…, because both of you rebelled against My command at the waters of Meribah.

Take Aaron and his son Eleazar and bring them up Mount Hor.

Remove Aaron’s priestly garments and put them on his son Eleazar. Aaron will be gathered [to his people] and will die there.”

So Moses did as the LORD had commanded, and they climbed… Mount Hor in the sight of the whole congregation.

After Moses had removed Aaron’s garments and put them on… his son Eleazar, Aaron died there on top of the mountain. Then Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain.

When the whole congregation saw that Aaron had died, the entire house of Israel mourned for him thirty days.
