Chapter 19

The Red Heifer

1

Then the LORD said to Moses… and Aaron…,

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

יְהוָ֔ה וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֥ה וְאֶֽל־ אַהֲרֹ֖ן לֵאמֹֽר׃ Yah·weh way·ḏab·bêr ’el- mō·šeh wə·’el- ’a·hă·rōn lê·mōrWLC · 1

“This is the statute of the law that the LORD… has commanded: Instruct… the Israelites… to bring you an unblemished red heifer that has no defect and has never been placed under a yoke.

זֹ֚את חֻקַּ֣ת הַתּוֹרָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר צִוָּ֥ה דַּבֵּ֣ר׀ אֶל־ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וְיִקְח֣וּ אֵלֶיךָ֩ תְּמִימָ֗ה אֲדֻמָּ֜ה פָרָ֨ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר אֵֽין־ בָּהּ֙ מ֔וּם אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹא־ עָלָ֥ה עָלֶ֖יהָ עֹֽל׃ zōṯ ḥuq·qaṯ hat·tō·w·rāh ’ă·šer- Yah·weh lê·mōr ṣiw·wāh dab·bêr ’el- bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl wə·yiq·ḥū ’ê·le·ḵā tə·mî·māh ’ă·ḏum·māh p̄ā·rāh ’ă·šer ’ên- bāh mūm ’ă·šer lō- ‘ā·lāh ‘ā·le·hā ‘ōlWLC · 2

Give it to Eleazar the priest, and he will have it brought - outside the camp and slaughtered in his presence.

וּנְתַתֶּ֣ם אֹתָ֔הּ אֶל־ אֶלְעָזָ֖ר הַכֹּהֵ֑ן וְהוֹצִ֤יא אֹתָהּ֙ אֶל־ מִח֣וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה וְשָׁחַ֥ט אֹתָ֖הּ לְפָנָֽיו׃ ū·nə·ṯat·tem ’ō·ṯāh ’el- ’el·‘ā·zār hak·kō·hên wə·hō·w·ṣî ’ō·ṯāh ’el- mi·ḥūṣ lam·ma·ḥă·neh wə·šā·ḥaṭ ’ō·ṯāh lə·p̄ā·nāwWLC · 3

Eleazar the priest is to take some of its blood on his finger and sprinkle [it] seven times toward… the front of the Tent of Meeting.

אֶלְעָזָ֧ר הַכֹּהֵ֛ן וְלָקַ֞ח מִדָּמָ֖הּ בְּאֶצְבָּע֑וֹ וְהִזָּ֞ה מִדָּמָ֖הּ שֶׁ֥בַע פְּעָמִֽים׃ אֶל־ נֹ֨כַח פְּנֵ֧י אֹֽהֶל־ מוֹעֵ֛ד ’el·‘ā·zār hak·kō·hên wə·lā·qaḥ mid·dā·māh bə·’eṣ·bā·‘ōw wə·hiz·zāh mid·dā·māh še·ḇa‘ pə·‘ā·mîm ’el- nō·ḵaḥ pə·nê ’ō·hel- mō·w·‘êḏWLC · 4

Then the heifer must be burned in his sight. Its hide, its flesh, and its blood are to be burned, along with its dung.

הַפָּרָ֖ה וְשָׂרַ֥ף אֶת־ לְעֵינָ֑יו אֶת־ עֹרָ֤הּ וְאֶת־ בְּשָׂרָהּ֙ וְאֶת־ דָּמָ֔הּ יִשְׂרֹֽף׃ עַל־ פִּרְשָׁ֖הּ hap·pā·rāh wə·śā·rap̄ ’eṯ- lə·‘ê·nāw ’eṯ- ‘ō·rāh wə·’eṯ- bə·śā·rāh wə·’eṯ- dā·māh yiś·rōp̄ ‘al- pir·šāhWLC · 5

The priest is to take cedar wood, hyssop, and scarlet wool… and throw them onto the burning heifer.

הַכֹּהֵ֗ן וְלָקַ֣ח אֶ֛רֶז עֵ֥ץ וְאֵז֖וֹב וּשְׁנִ֣י תוֹלָ֑עַת וְהִשְׁלִ֕יךְ אֶל־ תּ֖וֹךְ שְׂרֵפַ֥ת הַפָּרָֽה׃ hak·kō·hên wə·lā·qaḥ ’e·rez ‘êṣ wə·’ê·zō·wḇ ū·šə·nî ṯō·w·lā·‘aṯ wə·hiš·lîḵ ’el- tō·wḵ śə·rê·p̄aṯ hap·pā·rāhWLC · 6

Then the priest must wash his clothes and bathe his body in water; after that he may enter… the camp, but he will be ceremonially unclean until evening.

הַכֹּהֵ֗ן וְכִבֶּ֨ס בְּגָדָ֜יו וְרָחַ֤ץ בְּשָׂרוֹ֙ בַּמַּ֔יִם וְאַחַ֖ר יָב֣וֹא אֶל־ הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה הַכֹּהֵ֖ן וְטָמֵ֥א עַד־ הָעָֽרֶב׃ hak·kō·hên wə·ḵib·bes bə·ḡā·ḏāw wə·rā·ḥaṣ bə·śā·rōw bam·ma·yim wə·’a·ḥar yā·ḇō·w ’el- ham·ma·ḥă·neh hak·kō·hên wə·ṭā·mê ‘aḏ- hā·‘ā·reḇWLC · 7

The one who burned [the heifer] must also wash his clothes and bathe his body… in water, and he too will be ceremonially unclean until evening.

וְהַשֹּׂרֵ֣ף אֹתָ֔הּ יְכַבֵּ֤ס בְּגָדָיו֙ וְרָחַ֥ץ בְּשָׂר֖וֹ בַּמָּ֑יִם בַּמַּ֔יִם וְטָמֵ֖א עַד־ הָעָֽרֶב׃ wə·haś·śō·rêp̄ ’ō·ṯāh yə·ḵab·bês bə·ḡā·ḏāw wə·rā·ḥaṣ bə·śā·rōw bam·mā·yim bam·ma·yim wə·ṭā·mê ‘aḏ- hā·‘ā·reḇWLC · 8

Then a man who is ceremonially clean is to gather up the ashes of the heifer and store [them] in a ceremonially clean place outside the camp. They must be kept by the congregation… of Israel for preparing the water of purification; this [is] for purification from sin.

𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤈𐤄𐤅𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤎𐤐 𐤀𐤐𐤓 𐤄𐤐𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤇 𐤈𐤄𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤌𐤇𐤅𐤑 𐤋𐤌𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤋𐤏𐤃𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤌𐤉 𐤍𐤃𐤄 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕

אִ֣ישׁ טָה֗וֹר אֵ֚ת וְאָסַ֣ף׀ אֵ֣פֶר הַפָּרָ֔ה וְהִנִּ֛יחַ טָה֑וֹר בְּמָק֣וֹם מִח֥וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה וְ֠הָיְתָה לְמִשְׁמֶ֛רֶת לַעֲדַ֨ת בְּנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֧ל לְמֵ֥י נִדָּ֖ה הִֽוא׃ חַטָּ֥את ’îš ṭā·hō·wr ’êṯ wə·’ā·sap̄ ’ê·p̄er hap·pā·rāh wə·hin·nî·aḥ ṭā·hō·wr bə·mā·qō·wm mi·ḥūṣ lam·ma·ḥă·neh wə·hā·yə·ṯāh lə·miš·me·reṯ la·‘ă·ḏaṯ bə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl lə·mê nid·dāh hî ḥaṭ·ṭāṯWLC · 9

The man who has gathered up the ashes of the heifer must also wash his clothes, and he will be ceremonially unclean until evening. This is a permanent statute for the Israelites… and for the foreigner residing among them.

הָאֹסֵ֨ף אֶת־ אֵ֤פֶר הַפָּרָה֙ אֶת־ וְ֠כִבֶּס בְּגָדָ֔יו וְטָמֵ֖א עַד־ הָעָ֑רֶב וְֽהָיְתָ֞ה עוֹלָֽם׃ לְחֻקַּ֥ת לִבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וְלַגֵּ֛ר הַגָּ֥ר בְּתוֹכָ֖ם hā·’ō·sêp̄ ’eṯ- ’ê·p̄er hap·pā·rāh ’eṯ- wə·ḵib·bes bə·ḡā·ḏāw wə·ṭā·mê ‘aḏ- hā·‘ā·reḇ wə·hā·yə·ṯāh ‘ō·w·lām lə·ḥuq·qaṯ liḇ·nê yiś·rā·’êl wə·lag·gêr hag·gār bə·ṯō·w·ḵāmWLC · 10

Purification of the Unclean

Whoever touches any dead vvv body will be unclean for seven days.

𐤄𐤍𐤂𐤏 𐤋𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤌𐤕 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤍𐤐𐤔 𐤅𐤈𐤌𐤀 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌

הַנֹּגֵ֥עַ לְכָל־ בְּמֵ֖ת אָדָ֑ם נֶ֣פֶשׁ וְטָמֵ֖א שִׁבְעַ֥ת יָמִֽים׃ han·nō·ḡê·a‘ lə·ḵāl bə·mêṯ ’ā·ḏām ne·p̄eš wə·ṭā·mê šiḇ·‘aṯ yā·mîmWLC · 11

He must purify himself with [the water] on the third day and on the seventh day; then he will be clean. But if he does not purify himself on the third… and seventh days, he will not be clean.

ה֣וּא יִתְחַטָּא־ ב֞וֹ הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֛י בַּיּ֧וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֖י וּבַיּ֥וֹם יִטְהָ֑ר וְאִם־ לֹ֨א יִתְחַטָּ֜א הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֛י וּבַיּ֥וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֖י בַּיּ֧וֹם לֹ֥א יִטְהָֽר׃ hū yiṯ·ḥaṭ·ṭā- ḇōw haš·šə·lî·šî bay·yō·wm haš·šə·ḇî·‘î ū·ḇay·yō·wm yiṭ·hār wə·’im- lō yiṯ·ḥaṭ·ṭā haš·šə·lî·šî ū·ḇay·yō·wm haš·šə·ḇî·‘î bay·yō·wm lō yiṭ·hārWLC · 12

Anyone who touches a human - corpse… and fails to purify himself defiles the tabernacle of the LORD. That person must be cut off from Israel. He remains unclean, because the water of purification has not been sprinkled on him, and his uncleanness is still on him.

כָּֽל־ הַנֹּגֵ֡עַ הָאָדָ֨ם אֲשֶׁר־ יָמ֜וּת בְּמֵ֣ת בְּנֶפֶשׁ֩ וְלֹ֣א יִתְחַטָּ֗א אֶת־ טִמֵּ֔א מִשְׁכַּ֤ן יְהוָה֙ הַהִ֖וא הַנֶּ֥פֶשׁ וְנִכְרְתָ֛ה מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֑ל יִהְיֶ֔ה טָמֵ֣א כִּי֩ מֵ֨י נִדָּ֜ה לֹא־ זֹרַ֤ק עָלָיו֙ טֻמְאָת֥וֹ בֽוֹ׃ ע֖וֹד kāl- han·nō·ḡê·a‘ hā·’ā·ḏām ’ă·šer- yā·mūṯ bə·mêṯ bə·ne·p̄eš wə·lō yiṯ·ḥaṭ·ṭā ’eṯ- ṭim·mê miš·kan Yah·weh ha·hi·w han·ne·p̄eš wə·niḵ·rə·ṯāh mî·yiś·rā·’êl yih·yeh ṭā·mê kî mê nid·dāh lō- zō·raq ‘ā·lāw ṭum·’ā·ṯōw ḇōw ‘ō·wḏWLC · 13

This is the law when a person dies in a tent: Everyone who enters… the tent and everyone already in the tent will be unclean for seven days,

זֹ֚את הַתּוֹרָ֔ה כִּֽי־ אָדָ֖ם יָמ֣וּת בְּאֹ֑הֶל כָּל־ הַבָּ֤א אֶל־ הָאֹ֙הֶל֙ וְכָל־ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בָּאֹ֔הֶל יִטְמָ֖א שִׁבְעַ֥ת יָמִֽים׃ zōṯ hat·tō·w·rāh kî- ’ā·ḏām yā·mūṯ bə·’ō·hel kāl- hab·bā ’el- hā·’ō·hel wə·ḵāl ’ă·šer bā·’ō·hel yiṭ·mā šiḇ·‘aṯ yā·mîmWLC · 14

and any open container without a lid fastened on it is unclean…

𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤐𐤕𐤅𐤇 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤊𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤑𐤌𐤉𐤃 𐤐𐤕𐤉𐤋 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤈𐤌𐤀 𐤄𐤅𐤀

וְכֹל֙ פָת֔וּחַ אֲשֶׁ֛ר כְּלִ֣י אֵין־ צָמִ֥יד פָּתִ֖יל עָלָ֑יו טָמֵ֖א הֽוּא׃ wə·ḵōl p̄ā·ṯū·aḥ ’ă·šer kə·lî ’ên- ṣā·mîḏ pā·ṯîl ‘ā·lāw ṭā·mê hūWLC · 15

Anyone in the open field… who touches someone who has been killed by the sword or has died of natural causes, or anyone who touches a human bone or a grave, will be unclean for seven days.

וְכֹ֨ל עַל־ פְּנֵ֣י הַשָּׂדֶ֗ה אֲשֶׁר־ יִגַּ֜ע בַּֽחֲלַל־ חֶ֙רֶב֙ א֣וֹ בְמֵ֔ת אֽוֹ־ אָדָ֖ם בְעֶ֥צֶם א֣וֹ בְקָ֑בֶר יִטְמָ֖א שִׁבְעַ֥ת יָמִֽים׃ wə·ḵōl ‘al- pə·nê haś·śā·ḏeh ’ă·šer- yig·ga‘ ba·ḥă·lal- ḥe·reḇ ’ōw ḇə·mêṯ ’ōw- ’ā·ḏām ḇə·‘e·ṣem ’ōw ḇə·qā·ḇer yiṭ·mā šiḇ·‘aṯ yā·mîmWLC · 16

[For the purification] of the unclean person, take some of the ashes of the burnt sin offering, put them in a jar, and pour fresh water over them.

לַטָּמֵ֔א וְלָֽקְחוּ֙ מֵעֲפַ֖ר שְׂרֵפַ֣ת הַֽחַטָּ֑את וְנָתַ֥ן אֶל־ כֶּֽלִי׃ חַיִּ֖ים מַ֥יִם עָלָ֛יו laṭ·ṭā·mê wə·lā·qə·ḥū mê·‘ă·p̄ar śə·rê·p̄aṯ ha·ḥaṭ·ṭāṯ wə·nā·ṯan ’el- ke·lî ḥay·yîm ma·yim ‘ā·lāwWLC · 17

Then a man who is ceremonially clean is to take some hyssop, dip it in the water, and sprinkle… the tent,… all the furnishings,… and the people who were there… He is also to sprinkle the one who touched a bone, a grave, or a person who has died… or been slain…

אִ֣ישׁ טָהוֹר֒ וְלָקַ֨ח אֵז֜וֹב וְטָבַ֣ל בַּמַּיִם֮ וְהִזָּ֤ה עַל־ הָאֹ֙הֶל֙ וְעַל־ כָּל־ הַכֵּלִ֔ים וְעַל־ הַנְּפָשׁ֖וֹת אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָֽיוּ־ שָׁ֑ם וְעַל־ הַנֹּגֵ֗עַ בַּעֶ֙צֶם֙ בַקָּֽבֶר׃ בַמֵּ֖ת א֥וֹ א֣וֹ בֶֽחָלָ֔ל א֥וֹ ’îš ṭā·hō·wr wə·lā·qaḥ ’ê·zō·wḇ wə·ṭā·ḇal bam·ma·yim wə·hiz·zāh ‘al- hā·’ō·hel wə·‘al- kāl- hak·kê·lîm wə·‘al- han·nə·p̄ā·šō·wṯ ’ă·šer hā·yū- šām wə·‘al- han·nō·ḡê·a‘ ba·‘e·ṣem ḇaq·qā·ḇer ḇam·mêṯ ’ōw ’ōw ḇe·ḥā·lāl ’ōwWLC · 18

The man who is ceremonially clean… is to sprinkle the unclean person on the third day and on the seventh day. After he purifies the unclean person on the seventh day, [the one being cleansed] must wash his clothes and bathe in water, and that evening he will be clean.

הַטָּהֹר֙ עַל־ וְהִזָּ֤ה הַטָּמֵ֔א הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֖י בַּיּ֥וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֑י וּבַיּ֣וֹם וְחִטְּאוֹ֙ הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י בַּיּ֣וֹם וְכִבֶּ֧ס בְּגָדָ֛יו וְרָחַ֥ץ בַּמַּ֖יִם בָּעָֽרֶב׃ וְטָהֵ֥ר haṭ·ṭā·hōr ‘al- wə·hiz·zāh haṭ·ṭā·mê haš·šə·lî·šî bay·yō·wm haš·šə·ḇî·‘î ū·ḇay·yō·wm wə·ḥiṭ·ṭə·’ōw haš·šə·ḇî·‘î bay·yō·wm wə·ḵib·bes bə·ḡā·ḏāw wə·rā·ḥaṣ bam·ma·yim bā·‘ā·reḇ wə·ṭā·hêrWLC · 19

But if a person who is unclean does not purify himself, [he] will be cut off from the assembly, because he has defiled the sanctuary of the LORD. The water of [purification] has not been sprinkled on him; he is unclean.

𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤈𐤌𐤀 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤕𐤇𐤈𐤀 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤍𐤐𐤔 𐤅𐤍𐤊𐤓𐤕𐤄 𐤌𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤒𐤄𐤋 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤈𐤌𐤀 𐤌𐤒𐤃𐤔 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤉 𐤍𐤃𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤆𐤓𐤒 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤈𐤌𐤀

וְאִ֤ישׁ אֲשֶׁר־ יִטְמָא֙ וְלֹ֣א יִתְחַטָּ֔א הַהִ֖וא הַנֶּ֥פֶשׁ וְנִכְרְתָ֛ה מִתּ֣וֹךְ הַקָּהָ֑ל כִּי֩ אֶת־ טִמֵּ֗א מִקְדַּ֨שׁ יְהוָ֜ה מֵ֥י נִדָּ֛ה לֹא־ זֹרַ֥ק עָלָ֖יו הֽוּא׃ טָמֵ֥א wə·’îš ’ă·šer- yiṭ·mā wə·lō yiṯ·ḥaṭ·ṭā ha·hi·w han·ne·p̄eš wə·niḵ·rə·ṯāh mit·tō·wḵ haq·qā·hāl kî ’eṯ- ṭim·mê miq·daš Yah·weh mê nid·dāh lō- zō·raq ‘ā·lāw hū ṭā·mêWLC · 20

This is a permanent statute for [the people]: The one who sprinkles the water of [purification] must wash his clothes, and whoever touches the water of [purification] will be unclean until evening.

𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤋𐤇𐤒𐤕 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤆𐤄 𐤌𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤃𐤄 𐤉𐤊𐤁𐤎 𐤁𐤂𐤃𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤂𐤏 𐤁𐤌𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤃𐤄 𐤉𐤈𐤌𐤀 𐤏𐤃 𐤄𐤏𐤓𐤁

וְהָיְתָ֥ה עוֹלָ֑ם לְחֻקַּ֣ת לָּהֶ֖ם וּמַזֵּ֤ה מֵֽי־ הַנִּדָּה֙ יְכַבֵּ֣ס בְּגָדָ֔יו וְהַנֹּגֵ֙עַ֙ בְּמֵ֣י הַנִּדָּ֔ה יִטְמָ֖א עַד־ הָעָֽרֶב׃ wə·hā·yə·ṯāh ‘ō·w·lām lə·ḥuq·qaṯ lå̄·hɛm ū·maz·zêh mê- han·nid·dāh yə·ḵab·bês bə·ḡā·ḏāw wə·han·nō·ḡê·a‘ bə·mê han·nid·dāh yiṭ·mā ‘aḏ- hā·‘ā·reḇWLC · 21

Anything the unclean person touches will become unclean, and anyone who touches it will be unclean until evening.”
