Chapter 14

Israel’s Rebellion

Then the whole congregation lifted up their voices and cried out, and that night the people wept.

𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤔𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤒𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤊𐤅

כָּל־ הָ֣עֵדָ֔ה וַתִּשָּׂא֙ אֶת־ קוֹלָ֑ם וַֽיִּתְּנ֖וּ הַהֽוּא׃ בַּלַּ֥יְלָה הָעָ֖ם וַיִּבְכּ֥וּ kāl- hā·‘ê·ḏāh wat·tiś·śā ’eṯ- qō·w·lām way·yit·tə·nū ha·hū bal·lay·lāh hā·‘ām way·yiḇ·kūWLC · 1

All the Israelites… grumbled against Moses… and Aaron, and the whole congregation said to them, “If only we had died in the land of Egypt, or if only we had died in this wilderness!

𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤅 𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓

כֹּ֖ל בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיִּלֹּ֙נוּ֙ עַל־ מֹשֶׁ֣ה וְעַֽל־ אַהֲרֹ֔ן כָּל־ הָעֵדָ֗ה וַֽיֹּאמְר֨וּ אֲלֵהֶ֜ם לוּ־ מַ֙תְנוּ֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם א֛וֹ לוּ־ מָֽתְנוּ׃ הַזֶּ֖ה בַּמִּדְבָּ֥ר kōl bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl way·yil·lō·nū ‘al- mō·šeh wə·‘al- ’a·hă·rōn kāl- hā·‘ê·ḏāh way·yō·mə·rū ’ă·lê·hem lū- maṯ·nū bə·’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim ’ōw lū- mā·ṯə·nū haz·zeh bam·miḏ·bārWLC · 2

Why is the LORD bringing us into this land to fall by the sword? Our wives and children will become plunder. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?”

𐤅𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤋𐤍𐤐𐤋 𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤁 𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤈𐤐𐤍𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤁𐤆 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤀 𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤔𐤅𐤁 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌𐤄

וְלָמָ֣ה יְ֠הוָה מֵבִ֨יא אֹתָ֜נוּ אֶל־ הַזֹּאת֙ הָאָ֤רֶץ לִנְפֹּ֣ל בַּחֶ֔רֶב נָשֵׁ֥ינוּ וְטַפֵּ֖נוּ יִהְי֣וּ לָבַ֑ז הֲל֧וֹא ט֦וֹב לָ֖נוּ שׁ֥וּב מִצְרָֽיְמָה׃ wə·lā·māh Yah·weh mê·ḇî ’ō·ṯā·nū ’el- haz·zōṯ hā·’ā·reṣ lin·pōl ba·ḥe·reḇ nā·šê·nū wə·ṭap·pê·nū yih·yū lā·ḇaz hă·lō·w ṭō·wḇ lā·nū šūḇ miṣ·rā·yə·māhWLC · 3

So they said to one another, “Let us appoint a leader and return to Egypt.”

וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ אֶל־ אִ֣ישׁ אָחִ֑יו נִתְּנָ֥ה רֹ֖אשׁ וְנָשׁ֥וּבָה מִצְרָֽיְמָה׃ way·yō·mə·rū ’el- ’îš ’ā·ḥîw nit·tə·nāh rōš wə·nā·šū·ḇāh miṣ·rā·yə·māhWLC · 4

Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown before the whole assembly of the congregation… of Israel.

מֹשֶׁ֛ה וְאַהֲרֹ֖ן וַיִּפֹּ֥ל עַל־ פְּנֵיהֶ֑ם לִפְנֵ֕י כָּל־ קְהַ֥ל עֲדַ֖ת בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ mō·šeh wə·’a·hă·rōn way·yip·pōl ‘al- pə·nê·hem lip̄·nê kāl- qə·hal ‘ă·ḏaṯ bə·nê yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 5

Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤏 𐤁𐤍 𐤍𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤊𐤋𐤁 𐤁𐤍 𐤉𐤐𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤕𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤒𐤓𐤏𐤅 𐤁𐤂𐤃𐤉𐤄𐤌

וִיהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ בִּן־ נ֗וּן וְכָלֵב֙ בֶּן־ יְפֻנֶּ֔ה מִן־ הַתָּרִ֖ים אֶת־ הָאָ֑רֶץ קָרְע֖וּ בִּגְדֵיהֶֽם׃ wî·hō·wō·šu·a‘ bin- nūn wə·ḵā·lêḇ ben- yə·p̄un·neh min- hat·tā·rîm ’eṯ- hā·’ā·reṣ qā·rə·‘ū biḡ·ḏê·hemWLC · 6

and said to the whole congregation… of Israel…, “The land we passed through and explored [is] an exceedingly… good land.

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤃𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤄 𐤋𐤕𐤅𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤈𐤅𐤁𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑

וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ אֶל־ כָּל־ עֲדַ֥ת בְּנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֵאמֹ֑ר הָאָ֗רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֨ר עָבַ֤רְנוּ בָהּ֙ לָת֣וּר אֹתָ֔הּ מְאֹ֥ד מְאֹֽד׃ טוֹבָ֥ה הָאָ֖רֶץ way·yō·mə·rū ’el- kāl- ‘ă·ḏaṯ bə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl lê·mōr hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer ‘ā·ḇar·nū ḇāh lā·ṯūr ’ō·ṯāh mə·’ōḏ mə·’ōḏ ṭō·w·ḇāh hā·’ā·reṣWLC · 7

If the LORD delights in us, He will bring us into this land, a land - flowing with milk and honey, and He will give it to us.

𐤀𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤇𐤐𐤑 𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤆𐤁𐤕 𐤇𐤋𐤁 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤔 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤍𐤅

אִם־ יְהוָ֔ה חָפֵ֥ץ בָּ֙נוּ֙ וְהֵבִ֤יא אֹתָ֙נוּ֙ אֶל־ הַזֹּ֔את הָאָ֣רֶץ אֶ֕רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־ הִ֛וא זָבַ֥ת חָלָ֖ב וּדְבָֽשׁ׃ וּנְתָנָ֖הּ לָ֑נוּ ’im- Yah·weh ḥā·p̄êṣ bā·nū wə·hê·ḇî ’ō·ṯā·nū ’el- haz·zōṯ hā·’ā·reṣ ’e·reṣ ’ă·šer- hî zā·ḇaṯ ḥā·lāḇ ū·ḏə·ḇāš ū·nə·ṯā·nāh lā·nūWLC · 8

Only do not rebel… against the LORD, and do not be afraid of the people of the land, for they will be like bread for us… Their protection has been removed…, and the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them!”

𐤀𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤌𐤓𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤄𐤌 𐤑𐤋𐤌 𐤎𐤓 𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤌

אַ֣ךְ אַל־ תִּמְרֹדוּ֒ וְאַתֶּ֗ם בַּֽיהוָה֮ אַל־ תִּֽירְאוּ֙ אֶת־ עַ֣ם הָאָ֔רֶץ כִּ֥י לַחְמֵ֖נוּ הֵ֑ם צִלָּ֧ם סָ֣ר מֵעֲלֵיהֶ֛ם וַֽיהוָ֥ה אִתָּ֖נוּ אַל־ תִּירָאֻֽם׃ ’aḵ ’al- tim·rō·ḏū wə·’at·tem Yah·weh ’al- tî·rə·’ū ’eṯ- ‘am hā·’ā·reṣ kî laḥ·mê·nū hêm ṣil·lām sār mê·‘ă·lê·hem Yah·weh ’it·tā·nū ’al- tî·rā·’umWLC · 9

But the whole congregation threatened to stone [Joshua and Caleb]. Then the glory of the LORD appeared to all the Israelites… at the Tent of Meeting.

𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤋𐤓𐤂𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤃 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤍𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋𐤐 𐤁𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃

כָּל־ הָ֣עֵדָ֔ה וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ לִרְגּ֥וֹם אֹתָ֖ם בָּאֲבָנִ֑ים וּכְב֣וֹד יְהוָ֗ה נִרְאָה֙ אֶֽל־ כָּל־ בְּנֵ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ בְּאֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד kāl- hā·‘ê·ḏāh way·yō·mə·rū lir·gō·wm ’ō·ṯām bā·’ă·ḇā·nîm ū·ḵə·ḇō·wḏ Yah·weh nir·’āh ’el- kāl- bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl bə·’ō·hel mō·w·‘êḏWLC · 10

And the LORD said to Moses, “How long… will this people treat Me with contempt? How long… will they refuse to believe in Me, despite all the signs I have performed among them?

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤏𐤃 𐤀𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤉𐤍𐤀𐤑𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤀𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤉 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤕𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤅

יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֔ה עַד־ אָ֥נָה הַזֶּ֑ה הָעָ֣ם יְנַאֲצֻ֖נִי וְעַד־ אָ֙נָה֙ לֹא־ יַאֲמִ֣ינוּ בִ֔י בְּכֹל֙ הָֽאֹת֔וֹת אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשִׂ֖יתִי בְּקִרְבּֽוֹ׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- mō·šeh ‘aḏ- ’ā·nāh haz·zeh hā·‘ām yə·na·’ă·ṣu·nî wə·‘aḏ- ’ā·nāh lō- ya·’ă·mî·nū ḇî bə·ḵōl hā·’ō·ṯō·wṯ ’ă·šer ‘ā·śî·ṯî bə·qir·bōwWLC · 11

I will strike them with a plague and destroy them— and I will make you into a nation greater and mightier than they are.”

אַכֶּ֥נּוּ בַדֶּ֖בֶר וְאוֹרִשֶׁ֑נּוּ וְאֶֽעֱשֶׂה֙ אֹֽתְךָ֔ לְגוֹי־ גָּד֥וֹל וְעָצ֖וּם מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ ’ak·ken·nū ḇad·de·ḇer wə·’ō·w·ri·šen·nū wə·’e·‘ĕ·śeh ’ō·ṯə·ḵā lə·ḡō·w- gā·ḏō·wl wə·‘ā·ṣūm mim·men·nūWLC · 12

Moses Intercedes for Israel

But Moses said to the LORD, “The Egyptians will hear of it, for by Your strength You brought this people from among them.

𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤊𐤇𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤌𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤅

מֹשֶׁ֖ה וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֶל־ יְהוָ֑ה מִצְרַ֔יִם וְשָׁמְע֣וּ כִּֽי־ בְכֹחֲךָ֛ אֶת־ הֶעֱלִ֧יתָ הַזֶּ֖ה הָעָ֥ם מִקִּרְבּֽוֹ׃ mō·šeh way·yō·mer ’el- Yah·weh miṣ·ra·yim wə·šā·mə·‘ū kî- ḇə·ḵō·ḥă·ḵā ’eṯ- he·‘ĕ·lî·ṯā haz·zeh hā·‘ām miq·qir·bōwWLC · 13

And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have already heard that You, O LORD, are in the midst of this people, that You, O LORD, have been seen face to face, [that] Your cloud stands over them, and [that] You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.

𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤁 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤍𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤏𐤉𐤍 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍 𐤅𐤏𐤍𐤍𐤊 𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤏𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤏𐤍𐤍 𐤉𐤅𐤌𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤏𐤌𐤅𐤃 𐤀𐤔 𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄

וְאָמְר֗וּ אֶל־ יוֹשֵׁב֮ הַזֹּאת֒ הָאָ֣רֶץ שָֽׁמְעוּ֙ כִּֽי־ אַתָּ֣ה יְהוָ֔ה בְּקֶ֖רֶב הַזֶּ֑ה הָעָ֣ם אֲשֶׁר־ אַתָּ֣ה יְהוָ֗ה נִרְאָ֣ה׀ עַ֨יִן בְּעַ֜יִן וַעֲנָֽנְךָ֙ עֹמֵ֣ד עֲלֵהֶ֔ם אַתָּ֨ה הֹלֵ֤ךְ לִפְנֵיהֶם֙ וּבְעַמֻּ֣ד עָנָ֗ן יוֹמָ֔ם וּבְעַמּ֥וּד אֵ֖שׁ לָֽיְלָה׃ wə·’ā·mə·rū ’el- yō·wō·šêḇ haz·zōṯ hā·’ā·reṣ šā·mə·‘ū kî- ’at·tāh Yah·weh bə·qe·reḇ haz·zeh hā·‘ām ’ă·šer- ’at·tāh Yah·weh nir·’āh ‘a·yin bə·‘a·yin wa·‘ă·nā·nə·ḵā ‘ō·mêḏ ‘ă·lê·hem ’at·tāh hō·lêḵ lip̄·nê·hem ū·ḇə·‘am·muḏ ‘ā·nān yō·w·mām ū·ḇə·‘am·mūḏ ’êš lā·yə·lāhWLC · 14

If You kill this people as one man, the nations who have heard of Your fame… will say,

𐤅𐤄𐤌𐤕𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤊𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤊 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅

וְהֵמַתָּ֛ה אֶת־ הַזֶּ֖ה הָעָ֥ם אֶחָ֑ד כְּאִ֣ישׁ הַגּוֹיִ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־ שָׁמְע֥וּ אֶֽת־ שִׁמְעֲךָ֖ לֵאמֹֽר׃ וְאָֽמְרוּ֙ wə·hê·mat·tāh ’eṯ- haz·zeh hā·‘ām ’e·ḥāḏ kə·’îš hag·gō·w·yim ’ă·šer- šā·mə·‘ū ’eṯ- šim·‘ă·ḵā lê·mōr wə·’ā·mə·rūWLC · 15

‘Because the LORD vvv was unable to bring this people into the land He swore to give them, He has slaughtered them in the wilderness.’

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤉𐤊𐤋𐤕 𐤋𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤔𐤁𐤏 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤇𐤈𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓

יְהוָ֗ה מִבִּלְתִּ֞י יְכֹ֣לֶת לְהָבִיא֙ אֶת־ הַזֶּ֔ה הָעָ֣ם אֶל־ הָאָ֖רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־ נִשְׁבַּ֣ע לָהֶ֑ם וַיִּשְׁחָטֵ֖ם בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ Yah·weh mib·bil·tî yə·ḵō·leṯ lə·hā·ḇî ’eṯ- haz·zeh hā·‘ām ’el- hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer- niš·ba‘ lā·hem way·yiš·ḥā·ṭêm bam·miḏ·bārWLC · 16

So now I pray, may the power of my Lord be magnified, just as You have declared…:

𐤅𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤍𐤀 𐤊𐤇 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤂𐤃𐤋 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤕 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

וְעַתָּ֕ה נָ֖א כֹּ֣חַ אֲדֹנָ֑י יִגְדַּל־ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּ֖רְתָּ לֵאמֹֽר׃ wə·‘at·tāh nā kō·aḥ ’ă·ḏō·nāy yiḡ·dal- ka·’ă·šer dib·bar·tā lê·mōrWLC · 17

‘The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in loving devotion, forgiving iniquity and transgression. Yet He will by no means… leave the guilty unpunished; He will visit the iniquity of the fathers upon their children to the third… and fourth [generation].’

Pardon, I pray, the iniquity of this people, in keeping with the greatness of Your loving devotion, just as You have forgiven [them]… ever since [they left] Egypt.”

“I have pardoned them as you requested,” the LORD replied.

“Yet as surely as I live and as surely as the whole earth is filled with the glory of the LORD,

  • [not one] of the men who have seen My glory and the signs I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness— yet have tested Me vvv and disobeyed Me these ten times—

not one will ever see the land that I swore to give their fathers. None… of those who have treated Me with contempt will see it.

But because My servant Caleb has… a different spirit and has followed Me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he has entered,… and his descendants will inherit it.

Now since the Amalekites and Canaanites are living in the valleys, turn back tomorrow and head for the wilderness along the route to the Red Sea.

“How long… will this wicked congregation grumble against Me? I have heard the complaints that the Israelites… {are making} against Me.

So tell them…: As surely as I live, declares the LORD, I will do to you exactly… as I heard… you say.

Your bodies will fall in this wilderness— all who were numbered in the census, everyone twenty years of age… or older— because you have grumbled against Me.

Surely none of you will enter… the land in which I swore to settle you, except… Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

אִם־ אַתֶּם֙ תָּבֹ֣אוּ אֶל־ הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֤ר נָשָׂ֙אתִי֙ אֶת־ יָדִ֔י לְשַׁכֵּ֥ן אֶתְכֶ֖ם בָּ֑הּ כִּ֚י אִם־ כָּלֵ֣ב בֶּן־ יְפֻנֶּ֔ה וִיהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ בִּן־ נֽוּן׃ ’im- ’at·tem tā·ḇō·’ū ’el- hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer nā·śā·ṯî ’eṯ- yā·ḏî lə·šak·kên ’eṯ·ḵem bāh kî ’im- kā·lêḇ ben- yə·p̄un·neh wî·hō·wō·šu·a‘ bin- nūnWLC · 30

But I will bring your children, whom you said would become plunder, into the land you have rejected and they will enjoy it. -

As for you, however, your bodies will fall in this wilderness.

Your children will be shepherds in the wilderness for forty years, and they will suffer [for] your unfaithfulness until the last of your bodies lies in the wilderness.

In keeping with the forty days you spied out the land, you shall bear your guilt forty years— a year for each day - -— and you will experience My alienation.

I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will surely… do these things to this entire wicked… congregation, which has conspired against Me. They will meet their end in the wilderness,… and there they will die.”

So the men Moses had sent to spy out the land, who had returned and made the whole congregation grumble against him by bringing out a bad report about the land—

those men who had brought out the bad report about the land— were struck down by a plague before the LORD.

Of those men who had gone to spy out the land, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh remained alive.

And when Moses relayed these words to all the Israelites…, the people mourned bitterly.

Early the next morning they got up and went up toward the ridge of the hill country. “We have indeed sinned,” they said, “but we will go to the place the LORD has promised.”

But Moses said, “Why… are you transgressing the commandment of the LORD? This will not succeed!

מֹשֶׁ֔ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָ֥מָּה זֶּ֛ה אַתֶּ֥ם עֹבְרִ֖ים אֶת־ פִּ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וְהִ֖וא לֹ֥א תִצְלָֽח׃ mō·šeh way·yō·mer lām·māh zeh ’at·tem ‘ō·ḇə·rîm ’eṯ- pî Yah·weh wə·hi·w lō ṯiṣ·lāḥWLC · 41

Do not go up, lest you be struck down by your enemies, because the LORD is not among you.

אַֽל־ תַּעֲל֔וּ וְלֹא֙ תִּנָּ֣גְפ֔וּ לִפְנֵ֖י אֹיְבֵיכֶֽם׃ כִּ֛י יְהוָ֖ה אֵ֥ין בְּקִרְבְּכֶ֑ם ’al- ta·‘ă·lū wə·lō tin·nā·ḡə·p̄ū lip̄·nê ’ō·yə·ḇê·ḵem kî Yah·weh ’ên bə·qir·bə·ḵemWLC · 42

For there the Amalekites and Canaanites will face you, and you will fall by the sword. Because… you have turned away from the LORD, [He] will not be with you.”

כִּי֩ שָׁם֙ הָעֲמָלֵקִ֨י וְהַכְּנַעֲנִ֥י לִפְנֵיכֶ֔ם וּנְפַלְתֶּ֖ם בֶּחָ֑רֶב כִּֽי־ עַל־ כֵּ֤ן שַׁבְתֶּם֙ מֵאַחֲרֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה יְהוָ֖ה וְלֹא־ יִהְיֶ֥ה עִמָּכֶֽם׃ kî šām hā·‘ă·mā·lê·qî wə·hak·kə·na·‘ă·nî lip̄·nê·ḵem ū·nə·p̄al·tem be·ḥā·reḇ kî- ‘al- kên šaḇ·tem mê·’a·ḥă·rê Yah·weh Yah·weh wə·lō- yih·yeh ‘im·mā·ḵemWLC · 43

But they dared to go up to the ridge of the hill country, though neither Moses [nor] the ark of the covenant of the LORD moved from the camp.

וַיַּעְפִּ֕לוּ לַעֲל֖וֹת אֶל־ רֹ֣אשׁ הָהָ֑ר לֹא־ וּמֹשֶׁ֔ה וַאֲר֤וֹן בְּרִית־ יְהוָה֙ מָ֖שׁוּ מִקֶּ֥רֶב הַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃ way·ya‘·pi·lū la·‘ă·lō·wṯ ’el- rōš hā·hār lō- ū·mō·šeh wa·’ă·rō·wn bə·rîṯ- Yah·weh mā·šū miq·qe·reḇ ham·ma·ḥă·nehWLC · 44

Then the Amalekites and Canaanites who lived in that part of the hill country came down, attacked them, and routed them all the way to Hormah.
