Chapter 9

The Fifth Plague: Livestock

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and tell him that this is what the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, says: ‘Let My people go, so that they may worship Me.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤍𐤉

יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֔ה בֹּ֖א אֶל־ פַּרְעֹ֑ה וְדִבַּרְתָּ֣ אֵלָ֗יו כֹּֽה־ יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י הָֽעִבְרִ֔ים אָמַ֤ר עַמִּ֖י שַׁלַּ֥ח אֶת־ וְיַֽעַבְדֻֽנִי׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- mō·šeh bō ’el- par·‘ōh wə·ḏib·bar·tā ’ê·lāw kōh- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê hā·‘iḇ·rîm ’ā·mar ‘am·mî šal·laḥ ’eṯ- wə·ya·‘aḇ·ḏu·nîWLC · 1

But if you continue to restrain them and refuse to let them go,

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤅𐤃𐤊 𐤌𐤇𐤆𐤉𐤒 𐤁𐤌 𐤌𐤀𐤍 𐤋𐤔𐤋𐤇

כִּ֛י אִם־ אַתָּ֖ה וְעוֹדְךָ֖ מַחֲזִ֥יק בָּֽם׃ מָאֵ֥ן לְשַׁלֵּ֑חַ kî ’im- ’at·tāh wə·‘ō·wḏ·ḵā ma·ḥă·zîq bām mā·’ên lə·šal·lê·aḥWLC · 2

then the hand of the LORD will bring a severe… plague on your livestock in the field— on your horses, donkeys, camels, herds, and flocks.

𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤃 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤅𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤁𐤃 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤊 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤁𐤎𐤅𐤎𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤇𐤌𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤂𐤌𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤅𐤁𐤑𐤀𐤍

הִנֵּ֨ה יַד־ יְהוָ֜ה הוֹיָ֗ה כָּבֵ֥ד מְאֹֽד׃ דֶּ֖בֶר בְּמִקְנְךָ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה בַּסּוּסִ֤ים בַּֽחֲמֹרִים֙ בַּגְּמַלִּ֔ים בַּבָּקָ֖ר וּבַצֹּ֑אן hin·nêh yaḏ- Yah·weh hō·w·yāh kā·ḇêḏ mə·’ōḏ de·ḇer bə·miq·nə·ḵā ’ă·šer baś·śā·ḏeh bas·sū·sîm ba·ḥă·mō·rîm bag·gə·mal·lîm bab·bā·qār ū·ḇaṣ·ṣōnWLC · 3

But the LORD will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel… and the livestock of Egypt, so that no [animal]… belonging to the Israelites… will die.’”

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤐𐤋𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤌𐤊𐤋 𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤌𐤅𐤕

יְהוָ֔ה וְהִפְלָ֣ה בֵּ֚ין מִקְנֵ֣ה יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וּבֵ֖ין מִקְנֵ֣ה מִצְרָ֑יִם וְלֹ֥א דָּבָֽר׃ מִכָּל־ לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל יָמ֛וּת Yah·weh wə·hip̄·lāh bên miq·nêh yiś·rā·’êl ū·ḇên miq·nêh miṣ·rā·yim wə·lō dā·ḇār mik·kāl liḇ·nê yiś·rā·’êl yā·mūṯWLC · 4

The LORD set a time, saying, “Tomorrow the LORD will do this… in the land.”

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌 𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤇𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑

יְהוָ֖ה וַיָּ֥שֶׂם מוֹעֵ֣ד לֵאמֹ֑ר מָחָ֗ר יְהוָ֛ה יַעֲשֶׂ֧ה הַזֶּ֖ה הַדָּבָ֥ר בָּאָֽרֶץ׃ Yah·weh way·yā·śem mō·w·‘êḏ lê·mōr mā·ḥār Yah·weh ya·‘ă·śeh haz·zeh had·dā·ḇār bā·’ā·reṣWLC · 5

And the next day the LORD - did just that. All the livestock of the Egyptians died, but not one animal belonging to the Israelites… died.

𐤌𐤌𐤇𐤓𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤕 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤅𐤌𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤕

מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת יְהוָ֜ה אֶת־ הַדָּבָ֤ר וַיַּ֨עַשׂ הַזֶּה֙ כֹּ֖ל מִקְנֵ֣ה מִצְרָ֑יִם וַיָּ֕מָת לֹא־ אֶחָֽד׃ וּמִמִּקְנֵ֥ה בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מֵ֥ת mim·mā·ḥo·rāṯ Yah·weh ’eṯ- had·dā·ḇār way·ya·‘aś haz·zeh kōl miq·nêh miṣ·rā·yim way·yā·māṯ lō- ’e·ḥāḏ ū·mim·miq·nêh ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl mêṯWLC · 6

Pharaoh sent officials and found that none… of the livestock vvv of the Israelites had died. But Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he would not let the people go. -

פַּרְעֹ֔ה וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח וְהִנֵּ֗ה לֹא־ אֶחָ֑ד מִמִּקְנֵ֥ה יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל עַד־ מֵ֛ת פַּרְעֹ֔ה לֵ֣ב וַיִּכְבַּד֙ וְלֹ֥א הָעָֽם׃פ שִׁלַּ֖ח אֶת־ par·‘ōh way·yiš·laḥ wə·hin·nêh lō- ’e·ḥāḏ mim·miq·nêh yiś·rā·’êl ‘aḏ- mêṯ par·‘ōh lêḇ way·yiḵ·baḏ wə·lō hā·‘ām šil·laḥ ’eṯ-WLC · 7

The Sixth Plague: Boils

Then the LORD said to Moses… and Aaron, “Take handfuls… of soot from the furnace; in the sight of Pharaoh, Moses is to toss it into the air.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤒𐤇𐤅 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤌𐤋𐤀 𐤇𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤐𐤉𐤇 𐤊𐤁𐤔𐤍 𐤋𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤆𐤓𐤒𐤅 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌𐤄

יְהוָה֮ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֣ה וְאֶֽל־ אַהֲרֹן֒ קְח֤וּ לָכֶם֙ מְלֹ֣א חָפְנֵיכֶ֔ם פִּ֖יחַ כִּבְשָׁ֑ן לְעֵינֵ֥י פַרְעֹֽה׃ מֹשֶׁ֛ה וּזְרָק֥וֹ הַשָּׁמַ֖יְמָה Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- mō·šeh wə·’el- ’a·hă·rōn qə·ḥū lā·ḵem mə·lō ḥā·p̄ə·nê·ḵem pî·aḥ kiḇ·šān lə·‘ê·nê p̄ar·‘ōh mō·šeh ū·zə·rā·qōw haš·šā·may·māhWLC · 8

It will become fine dust over all the land of Egypt, and festering boils will break out on man… and beast throughout the land…”

𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤒 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤁𐤏𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤋𐤔𐤇𐤉𐤍 𐤐𐤓𐤇 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌

וְהָיָ֣ה לְאָבָ֔ק עַ֖ל כָּל־ אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם וְהָיָ֨ה אֲבַעְבֻּעֹ֖ת לִשְׁחִ֥ין פֹּרֵ֛חַ עַל־ הָאָדָ֜ם וְעַל־ הַבְּהֵמָ֗ה בְּכָל־ אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ wə·hā·yāh lə·’ā·ḇāq ‘al kāl- ’e·reṣ miṣ·rā·yim wə·hā·yāh ’ă·ḇa‘·bu·‘ōṯ liš·ḥîn pō·rê·aḥ ‘al- hā·’ā·ḏām wə·‘al- hab·bə·hê·māh bə·ḵāl ’e·reṣ miṣ·rā·yimWLC · 9

So they took soot from the furnace and stood before Pharaoh. Moses tossed it into the air, and festering boils broke out on man and beast.

𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤉𐤇 𐤄𐤊𐤁𐤔𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤆𐤓𐤒 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤏𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤔𐤇𐤉𐤍 𐤐𐤓𐤇 𐤁𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤄

וַיִּקְח֞וּ אֶת־ פִּ֣יחַ הַכִּבְשָׁ֗ן וַיַּֽעַמְדוּ֙ לִפְנֵ֣י פַרְעֹ֔ה מֹשֶׁ֖ה וַיִּזְרֹ֥ק אֹת֛וֹ הַשָּׁמָ֑יְמָה וַיְהִ֗י אֲבַעְבֻּעֹ֔ת שְׁחִין֙ פֹּרֵ֕חַ בָּאָדָ֖ם וּבַבְּהֵמָֽה׃ way·yiq·ḥū ’eṯ- pî·aḥ hak·kiḇ·šān way·ya·‘am·ḏū lip̄·nê p̄ar·‘ōh mō·šeh way·yiz·rōq ’ō·ṯōw haš·šā·mā·yə·māh way·hî ’ă·ḇa‘·bu·‘ōṯ šə·ḥîn pō·rê·aḥ bā·’ā·ḏām ū·ḇab·bə·hê·māhWLC · 10

The magicians could not stand before Moses, because the boils - had broken out on [them] and on all the Egyptians.

𐤄𐤇𐤓𐤈𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤋𐤏𐤌𐤃 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤔𐤇𐤉𐤍 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤔𐤇𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤇𐤓𐤈𐤌𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌

הַֽחַרְטֻמִּ֗ים יָכְל֣וּ וְלֹֽא־ לַעֲמֹ֛ד לִפְנֵ֥י מֹשֶׁ֖ה מִפְּנֵ֣י הַשְּׁחִ֑ין כִּֽי־ הַשְּׁחִ֔ין הָיָ֣ה בַּֽחֲרְטֻמִּ֖ם וּבְכָל־ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ ha·ḥar·ṭum·mîm yā·ḵə·lū wə·lō- la·‘ă·mōḏ lip̄·nê mō·šeh mip·pə·nê haš·šə·ḥîn kî- haš·šə·ḥîn hā·yāh ba·ḥăr·ṭum·mim ū·ḇə·ḵāl miṣ·rā·yimWLC · 11

But the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not listen to them, just as the LORD… had said to Moses.

יְהוָה֙ אֶת־ וַיְחַזֵּ֤ק פַּרְעֹ֔ה לֵ֣ב וְלֹ֥א שָׁמַ֖ע אֲלֵהֶ֑ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־ דִּבֶּ֥ר מֹשֶֽׁה׃ס Yah·weh ’eṯ- way·ḥaz·zêq par·‘ōh lêḇ wə·lō šā·ma‘ ’ă·lê·hem ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh ’el- dib·ber mō·šehWLC · 12

The Seventh Plague: Hail

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Get up early in the morning, stand before Pharaoh, and tell him that this is what the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, says: ‘Let My people go, so that they may worship Me.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤄𐤔𐤊𐤌 𐤁𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤅𐤄𐤕𐤉𐤑𐤁 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤍𐤉

יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֔ה הַשְׁכֵּ֣ם בַּבֹּ֔קֶר וְהִתְיַצֵּ֖ב לִפְנֵ֣י פַרְעֹ֑ה וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֵלָ֗יו כֹּֽה־ יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י הָֽעִבְרִ֔ים אָמַ֤ר עַמִּ֖י שַׁלַּ֥ח אֶת־ וְיַֽעַבְדֻֽנִי׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- mō·šeh haš·kêm bab·bō·qer wə·hiṯ·yaṣ·ṣêḇ lip̄·nê p̄ar·‘ōh wə·’ā·mar·tā ’ê·lāw kōh- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê hā·‘iḇ·rîm ’ā·mar ‘am·mî šal·laḥ ’eṯ- wə·ya·‘aḇ·ḏu·nîWLC · 13

Otherwise…, I will send all My plagues against you and your officials and your people, so you may know that [there is] no one like Me in all the earth.

𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤐𐤏𐤌 𐤄𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤂𐤐𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤁𐤊 𐤅𐤁𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤁𐤏𐤌𐤊 𐤁𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤓 𐤕𐤃𐤏 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤊𐤌𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑

כִּ֣י׀ בַּפַּ֣עַם הַזֹּ֗את אֲנִ֨י שֹׁלֵ֜חַ אֶת־ כָּל־ מַגֵּפֹתַי֙ אֶֽל־ לִבְּךָ֔ וּבַעֲבָדֶ֖יךָ וּבְעַמֶּ֑ךָ בַּעֲב֣וּר תֵּדַ֔ע כִּ֛י אֵ֥ין כָּמֹ֖נִי בְּכָל־ הָאָֽרֶץ׃ kî bap·pa·‘am haz·zōṯ ’ă·nî šō·lê·aḥ ’eṯ- kāl- mag·gê·p̄ō·ṯay ’el- lib·bə·ḵā ū·ḇa·‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā ū·ḇə·‘am·me·ḵā ba·‘ă·ḇūr tê·ḏa‘ kî ’ên kā·mō·nî bə·ḵāl hā·’ā·reṣWLC · 14

For by this time I could have stretched out My hand and struck you and your people with a plague to wipe you off the earth.

𐤊𐤉 𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤅𐤀𐤊 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤌𐤊 𐤁𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤕𐤊𐤇𐤃 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑

כִּ֤י עַתָּה֙ שָׁלַ֣חְתִּי אֶת־ יָדִ֔י וָאַ֥ךְ אוֹתְךָ֛ וְאֶֽת־ עַמְּךָ֖ בַּדָּ֑בֶר וַתִּכָּחֵ֖ד מִן־ הָאָֽרֶץ׃ kî ‘at·tāh šā·laḥ·tî ’eṯ- yā·ḏî wā·’aḵ ’ō·wṯ·ḵā wə·’eṯ- ‘am·mə·ḵā bad·dā·ḇer wat·tik·kā·ḥêḏ min- hā·’ā·reṣWLC · 15

But I have raised you up for this very purpose…, that I might display My power to you, and that My name might be proclaimed in all the earth.

𐤅𐤀𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤄𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤓 𐤁𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤓 𐤄𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤊 𐤊𐤇𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤍 𐤔𐤌𐤉 𐤎𐤐𐤓 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑

וְאוּלָ֗ם הֶעֱמַדְתִּ֔יךָ זֹאת֙ בַּעֲב֥וּר בַּעֲב֖וּר הַרְאֹתְךָ֣ כֹּחִ֑י אֶת־ וּלְמַ֛עַן שְׁמִ֖י סַפֵּ֥ר בְּכָל־ הָאָֽרֶץ׃ wə·’ū·lām he·‘ĕ·maḏ·tî·ḵā zōṯ ba·‘ă·ḇūr ba·‘ă·ḇūr har·’ō·ṯə·ḵā kō·ḥî ’eṯ- ū·lə·ma·‘an šə·mî sap·pêr bə·ḵāl hā·’ā·reṣWLC · 16

Still, you lord it over My people and do not allow them to go.

𐤏𐤅𐤃𐤊 𐤌𐤎𐤕𐤅𐤋𐤋 𐤁𐤏𐤌𐤉 𐤋𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤌

עוֹדְךָ֖ מִסְתּוֹלֵ֣ל בְּעַמִּ֑י לְבִלְתִּ֖י שַׁלְּחָֽם׃ ‘ō·wḏ·ḵā mis·tō·w·lêl bə·‘am·mî lə·ḇil·tî šal·lə·ḥāmWLC · 17

Behold, at this time tomorrow I will rain down the worst… hail that has ever fallen… on Egypt, from the day it was founded until now.

𐤄𐤍𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤏𐤕 𐤌𐤇𐤓 𐤌𐤌𐤈𐤉𐤓 𐤊𐤁𐤃 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤁𐤓𐤃 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤊𐤌𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤄𐤅𐤎𐤃𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤏𐤕𐤄

So give orders {now} to shelter your livestock and everything you have in the field. Every man or beast that remains in the field and is not brought inside will die when the hail comes down upon them.’”

Those among Pharaoh’s officials who feared the word of the LORD hurried to bring their servants and livestock to shelter,

𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤌𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉 𐤄𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤕 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤄𐤍𐤉𐤎 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤄𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤌

פַּרְעֹ֑ה מֵֽעַבְדֵ֖י הַיָּרֵא֙ אֶת־ דְּבַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה הֵנִ֛יס עֲבָדָ֥יו וְאֶת־ מִקְנֵ֖הוּ אֶת־ אֶל־ הַבָּתִּֽים׃ par·‘ōh mê·‘aḇ·ḏê hay·yā·rê ’eṯ- də·ḇar Yah·weh hê·nîs ‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw wə·’eṯ- miq·nê·hū ’eṯ- ’el- hab·bāt·tîmWLC · 20

but those who vvv disregarded the word… of the LORD… left their servants and livestock in the field.

וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־ שָׂ֛ם דְּבַ֣ר לִבּ֖וֹ יְהוָ֑ה אֶל־ וַֽיַּעֲזֹ֛ב אֶת־ עֲבָדָ֥יו וְאֶת־ מִקְנֵ֖הוּ בַּשָּׂדֶֽה׃פ wa·’ă·šer lō- śām də·ḇar lib·bōw Yah·weh ’el- way·ya·‘ă·zōḇ ’eṯ- ‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw wə·’eṯ- miq·nê·hū baś·śā·ḏehWLC · 21

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward heaven, so that hail may fall on all the land of Egypt— on man… and beast… and every plant of the field throughout the land of Egypt.”

So Moses stretched out his staff toward heaven, and the LORD sent thunder and hail, and lightning struck the earth. So the LORD rained down hail upon the land of Egypt.

מֹשֶׁ֣ה אֶת־ וַיֵּ֨ט מַטֵּהוּ֮ עַל־ הַשָּׁמַיִם֒ וַֽיהוָ֗ה נָתַ֤ן קֹלֹת֙ וּבָרָ֔ד אֵ֖שׁ וַתִּ֥הֲלַךְ אָ֑רְצָה יְהוָ֛ה וַיַּמְטֵ֧ר בָּרָ֖ד עַל־ אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ mō·šeh ’eṯ- way·yêṭ maṭ·ṭê·hū ‘al- haš·šā·ma·yim Yah·weh nā·ṯan qō·lōṯ ū·ḇā·rāḏ ’êš wat·ti·hă·laḵ ’ā·rə·ṣāh Yah·weh way·yam·ṭêr bā·rāḏ ‘al- ’e·reṣ miṣ·rā·yimWLC · 23

The hail fell and the lightning continued flashing through it. The hail was so severe that nothing like it had ever been [seen] in all the land of Egypt from the time it became a nation.

בָרָ֔ד וַיְהִ֣י וְאֵ֕שׁ מִתְלַקַּ֖חַת בְּת֣וֹךְ הַבָּרָ֑ד מְאֹ֔ד כָּבֵ֣ד אֲ֠שֶׁר לֹֽא־ כָמֹ֙הוּ֙ הָיָ֤ה בְּכָל־ אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם מֵאָ֖ז הָיְתָ֥ה לְגֽוֹי׃ ḇā·rāḏ way·hî wə·’êš miṯ·laq·qa·ḥaṯ bə·ṯō·wḵ hab·bā·rāḏ mə·’ōḏ kā·ḇêḏ ’ă·šer lō- ḵā·mō·hū hā·yāh bə·ḵāl ’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim mê·’āz hā·yə·ṯāh lə·ḡō·wWLC · 24

Throughout the land of Egypt, the hail struck down everything in the field, both man and beast; [it] beat down every plant of the field and stripped every tree…

בְּכָל־ אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֗יִם אֵ֚ת הַבָּרָ֜ד וַיַּ֨ךְ כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה מֵאָדָ֖ם וְעַד־ בְּהֵמָ֑ה וְאֵ֨ת הַבָּרָ֔ד וְאֶת־ הִכָּ֣ה כָּל־ עֵ֤שֶׂב הַשָּׂדֶה֙ שִׁבֵּֽר׃ כָּל־ עֵ֥ץ הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה bə·ḵāl ’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim ’êṯ hab·bā·rāḏ way·yaḵ kāl- ’ă·šer baś·śā·ḏeh mê·’ā·ḏām wə·‘aḏ- bə·hê·māh wə·’êṯ hab·bā·rāḏ wə·’eṯ- hik·kāh kāl- ‘ê·śeḇ haś·śā·ḏeh šib·bêr kāl- ‘êṣ haś·śā·ḏehWLC · 25

The only place where it did not hail was in the land of Goshen, where the Israelites… [lived].

Then Pharaoh summoned… Moses and Aaron. “This time I have sinned,” he said… “The LORD [is] righteous, and I and my people [are] wicked.

פַּרְעֹ֗ה וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח וַיִּקְרָא֙ לְמֹשֶׁ֣ה וּֽלְאַהֲרֹ֔ן הַפָּ֑עַם חָטָ֣אתִי וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֖ם יְהוָה֙ הַצַּדִּ֔יק וַאֲנִ֥י וְעַמִּ֖י הָרְשָׁעִֽים׃ par·‘ōh way·yiš·laḥ way·yiq·rā lə·mō·šeh ū·lə·’a·hă·rōn hap·pā·‘am ḥā·ṭā·ṯî way·yō·mer ’ă·lê·hem Yah·weh haṣ·ṣad·dîq wa·’ă·nî wə·‘am·mî hā·rə·šā·‘îmWLC · 27

Pray to the LORD, for there has been enough of God’s thunder and hail. I will let you go; you do not need to stay any longer.”

הַעְתִּ֙ירוּ֙ אֶל־ יְהוָ֔ה מִֽהְיֹ֛ת וְרַ֕ב אֱלֹהִ֖ים קֹלֹ֥ת וּבָרָ֑ד וַאֲשַׁלְּחָ֣ה אֶתְכֶ֔ם וְלֹ֥א לַעֲמֹֽד׃ תֹסִפ֖וּן ha‘·tî·rū ’el- Yah·weh mih·yōṯ wə·raḇ ’ĕ·lō·hîm qō·lōṯ ū·ḇā·rāḏ wa·’ă·šal·lə·ḥāh ’eṯ·ḵem wə·lō la·‘ă·mōḏ ṯō·si·p̄ūnWLC · 28

Moses said to him, “When I have left the city, I will spread out my hands to the LORD. The thunder will cease, and there will be no more hail, so that you may know that the earth [is] the LORD’s.

מֹשֶׁ֔ה וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ כְּצֵאתִי֙ אֶת־ הָעִ֔יר אֶפְרֹ֥שׂ אֶת־ כַּפַּ֖י אֶל־ יְהוָ֑ה הַקֹּל֣וֹת יֶחְדָּל֗וּן יִֽהְיֶה־ לֹ֣א ע֔וֹד וְהַבָּרָד֙ לְמַ֣עַן תֵּדַ֔ע כִּ֥י הָאָֽרֶץ׃ לַיהוָ֖ה mō·šeh way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw kə·ṣê·ṯî ’eṯ- hā·‘îr ’ep̄·rōś ’eṯ- kap·pay ’el- Yah·weh haq·qō·lō·wṯ yeḥ·dā·lūn yih·yeh- lō ‘ō·wḏ wə·hab·bā·rāḏ lə·ma·‘an tê·ḏa‘ kî hā·’ā·reṣ Yah·wehWLC · 29

But as for you and your officials, I know that you still do not fear… the LORD our God.”

וְאַתָּ֖ה וַעֲבָדֶ֑יךָ יָדַ֕עְתִּי כִּ֚י טֶ֣רֶם תִּֽירְא֔וּן מִפְּנֵ֖י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהִֽים׃ wə·’at·tāh wa·‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā yā·ḏa‘·tî kî ṭe·rem tî·rə·’ūn mip·pə·nê Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hîmWLC · 30

(Now the flax and barley were destroyed, since the barley… was ripe and the flax [was] in bloom;

וְהַפִּשְׁתָּ֥ה וְהַשְּׂעֹרָ֖ה נֻכָּ֑תָה כִּ֤י הַשְּׂעֹרָה֙ אָבִ֔יב וְהַפִּשְׁתָּ֖ה גִּבְעֹֽל׃ wə·hap·piš·tāh wə·haś·śə·‘ō·rāh nuk·kā·ṯāh kî haś·śə·‘ō·rāh ’ā·ḇîḇ wə·hap·piš·tāh giḇ·‘ōlWLC · 31

but the wheat and spelt were not destroyed, because they are late crops.)

וְהַחִטָּ֥ה וְהַכֻּסֶּ֖מֶת לֹ֣א נֻכּ֑וּ כִּ֥י הֵֽנָּה׃ אֲפִילֹ֖ת wə·ha·ḥiṭ·ṭāh wə·hak·kus·se·meṯ lō nuk·kū kî hên·nāh ’ă·p̄î·lōṯWLC · 32

Then Moses departed from Pharaoh, [went] out of the city, and spread out his hands to the LORD. The thunder and hail ceased, and the rain no longer poured down on the land.

מֹשֶׁ֜ה וַיֵּצֵ֨א מֵעִ֤ם פַּרְעֹה֙ אֶת־ הָעִ֔יר וַיִּפְרֹ֥שׂ כַּפָּ֖יו אֶל־ יְהוָ֑ה הַקֹּלוֹת֙ וְהַבָּרָ֔ד וַֽיַּחְדְּל֤וּ וּמָטָ֖ר לֹא־ נִתַּ֥ךְ אָֽרְצָה׃ mō·šeh way·yê·ṣê mê·‘im par·‘ōh ’eṯ- hā·‘îr way·yip̄·rōś kap·pāw ’el- Yah·weh haq·qō·lō·wṯ wə·hab·bā·rāḏ way·yaḥ·də·lū ū·mā·ṭār lō- nit·taḵ ’ā·rə·ṣāhWLC · 33

When Pharaoh saw that the rain and hail and thunder had ceased, he sinned again and hardened his heart— he and his officials.

So Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he would not let the Israelites… go, just as the LORD had said through Moses.
