Setting Up the Tabernacle

“On the first… day of the first month you are to set up the tabernacle, the Tent of Meeting.

Put the ark of the Testimony in it and screen off the ark with the veil.

Then bring in the table and set out its arrangement; bring in the lampstand {as well}, and set up its lamps.

Place the gold altar of incense in front of the ark of the Testimony, and hang the curtain at the entrance to the tabernacle.

Place the altar of burnt offering in front of the entrance to the tabernacle, the Tent of Meeting.

וְנָ֣תַתָּ֔ה אֵ֖ת מִזְבַּ֣ח הָעֹלָ֑ה לִפְנֵ֕י פֶּ֖תַח מִשְׁכַּ֥ן אֹֽהֶל־ מוֹעֵֽד׃ wə·nā·ṯat·tāh ’êṯ miz·baḥ hā·‘ō·lāh lip̄·nê pe·ṯaḥ miš·kan ’ō·hel- mō·w·‘êḏ — WLC · 6

And place the basin between the Tent of Meeting… and the altar, and put… water in it.

וְנָֽתַתָּ֙ אֶת־ הַכִּיֹּ֔ר בֵּֽין־ אֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵ֖ד וּבֵ֣ין הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ וְנָתַתָּ֥ שָׁ֖ם מָֽיִם׃ wə·nā·ṯa·tā ’eṯ- hak·kî·yōr bên- ’ō·hel mō·w·‘êḏ ū·ḇên ham·miz·bê·aḥ wə·nā·ṯa·tā šām mā·yim — WLC · 7

Set up the surrounding courtyard and hang the curtain for the entrance to the courtyard.

וְשַׂמְתָּ֥ אֶת־ סָבִ֑יב הֶחָצֵ֖ר וְנָ֣תַתָּ֔ אֶת־ מָסַ֖ךְ שַׁ֥עַר הֶחָצֵֽר׃ wə·śam·tā ’eṯ- sā·ḇîḇ he·ḥā·ṣêr wə·nā·ṯa·tā ’eṯ- mā·saḵ ša·‘ar he·ḥā·ṣêr — WLC · 8

Take the anointing oil and anoint the tabernacle and everything in it; consecrate it along with all its furnishings, and it shall be holy.

וְלָקַחְתָּ֙ אֶת־ הַמִּשְׁחָ֔ה שֶׁ֣מֶן וּמָשַׁחְתָּ֥ אֶת־ הַמִּשְׁכָּ֖ן וְאֶת־ כָּל־ אֲשֶׁר־ בּ֑וֹ וְקִדַּשְׁתָּ֥ אֹת֛וֹ וְאֶת־ כָּל־ כֵּלָ֖יו וְהָ֥יָה קֹֽדֶשׁ׃ wə·lā·qaḥ·tā ’eṯ- ham·miš·ḥāh še·men ū·mā·šaḥ·tā ’eṯ- ham·miš·kān wə·’eṯ- kāl- ’ă·šer- bōw wə·qid·daš·tā ’ō·ṯōw wə·’eṯ- kāl- kê·lāw wə·hā·yāh qō·ḏeš — WLC · 9

Anoint the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils; consecrate the altar, and it shall be… most holy.

Anoint the basin and its stand and consecrate them. -

וּמָשַׁחְתָּ֥ אֶת־ הַכִּיֹּ֖ר וְאֶת־ כַּנּ֑וֹ וְקִדַּשְׁתָּ֖ אֹתֽוֹ׃ ū·mā·šaḥ·tā ’eṯ- hak·kî·yōr wə·’eṯ- kan·nōw wə·qid·daš·tā ’ō·ṯōw — WLC · 11

Then bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and wash them with water.
𐤅𐤄𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤐𐤕𐤇 𐤀𐤄𐤋 𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤅𐤓𐤇𐤑𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤉𐤌
וְהִקְרַבְתָּ֤ אֶֽת־ אַהֲרֹן֙ וְאֶת־ בָּנָ֔יו אֶל־ פֶּ֖תַח אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד וְרָחַצְתָּ֥ אֹתָ֖ם בַּמָּֽיִם׃ wə·hiq·raḇ·tā ’eṯ- ’a·hă·rōn wə·’eṯ- bā·nāw ’el- pe·ṯaḥ ’ō·hel mō·w·‘êḏ wə·rā·ḥaṣ·tā ’ō·ṯām bam·mā·yim — WLC · 12

And you are to clothe Aaron with the holy garments, anoint him, and consecrate him, so that he may serve Me as a priest

וְהִלְבַּשְׁתָּ֙ אֶֽת־ אַהֲרֹ֔ן אֵ֖ת הַקֹּ֑דֶשׁ בִּגְדֵ֣י וּמָשַׁחְתָּ֥ אֹת֛וֹ וְקִדַּשְׁתָּ֥ אֹת֖וֹ וְכִהֵ֥ן לִֽי׃ wə·hil·baš·tā ’eṯ- ’a·hă·rōn ’êṯ haq·qō·ḏeš biḡ·ḏê ū·mā·šaḥ·tā ’ō·ṯōw wə·qid·daš·tā ’ō·ṯōw wə·ḵi·hên lî — WLC · 13

- Bring his sons forward and clothe them with tunics.
𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤕𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤁 𐤅𐤄𐤋𐤁𐤔𐤕 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤊𐤕𐤍𐤕
וְאֶת־ בָּנָ֖יו תַּקְרִ֑יב וְהִלְבַּשְׁתָּ֥ אֹתָ֖ם כֻּתֳּנֹֽת׃ wə·’eṯ- bā·nāw taq·rîḇ wə·hil·baš·tā ’ō·ṯām kut·to·nōṯ — WLC · 14

Anoint them just as you anointed their father, so that they may also serve Me as priests Their anointing will qualify them for a permanent priesthood throughout their generations.”

וּמָשַׁחְתָּ֣ אֹתָ֗ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר מָשַׁ֙חְתָּ֙ אֶת־ אֲבִיהֶ֔ם וְכִהֲנ֖וּ לִ֑י מָשְׁחָתָ֛ם וְ֠הָיְתָה לִהְיֹ֨ת לָהֶ֧ם עוֹלָ֖ם לִכְהֻנַּ֥ת לְדֹרֹתָֽם׃ ū·mā·šaḥ·tā ’ō·ṯām ka·’ă·šer mā·šaḥ·tā ’eṯ- ’ă·ḇî·hem wə·ḵi·hă·nū lî mā·šə·ḥā·ṯām wə·hā·yə·ṯāh lih·yōṯ lā·hem ‘ō·w·lām liḵ·hun·naṯ lə·ḏō·rō·ṯām — WLC · 15

Moses did everything just as the LORD -… had commanded him.

מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיַּ֖עַשׂ כְּ֠כֹל אֲשֶׁ֨ר יְהוָ֛ה אֹת֖וֹ כֵּ֥ן עָשָֽׂה׃ס צִוָּ֧ה mō·šeh way·ya·‘aś kə·ḵōl ’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ō·ṯōw kên ‘ā·śāh ṣiw·wāh — WLC · 16

So the tabernacle was set up on the first day of the first month of the second year.

וַיְהִ֞י הַמִּשְׁכָּֽן׃ הוּקַ֖ם בְּאֶחָ֣ד לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ הָרִאשׁ֛וֹן בַּחֹ֧דֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית בַּשָּׁנָ֥ה way·hî ham·miš·kān hū·qam bə·’e·ḥāḏ la·ḥō·ḏeš hā·ri·šō·wn ba·ḥō·ḏeš haš·šê·nîṯ baš·šā·nāh — WLC · 17

When Moses set up the tabernacle, he laid its bases, positioned its frames, inserted its crossbars, and set up its posts.
𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤄𐤌𐤔𐤊𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤒𐤓𐤔𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤇𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤌𐤅𐤃𐤉𐤅
מֹשֶׁ֜ה אֶת־ וַיָּ֨קֶם הַמִּשְׁכָּ֗ן וַיִּתֵּן֙ אֶת־ אֲדָנָ֔יו וַיָּ֙שֶׂם֙ אֶת־ קְרָשָׁ֔יו וַיִּתֵּ֖ן אֶת־ בְּרִיחָ֑יו וַיָּ֖קֶם אֶת־ עַמּוּדָֽיו׃ mō·šeh ’eṯ- way·yā·qem ham·miš·kān way·yit·tên ’eṯ- ’ă·ḏā·nāw way·yā·śem ’eṯ- qə·rā·šāw way·yit·tên ’eṯ- bə·rî·ḥāw way·yā·qem ’eṯ- ‘am·mū·ḏāw — WLC · 18

Then he spread the tent over the tabernacle and put the covering over the tent…, just as the LORD had commanded [him].

וַיִּפְרֹ֤שׂ אֶת־ הָאֹ֙הֶל֙ עַל־ הַמִּשְׁכָּ֔ן וַיָּ֜שֶׂם אֶת־ מִכְסֵ֥ה הָאֹ֛הֶל עָלָ֖יו מִלְמָ֑עְלָה כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־ צִוָּ֥ה מֹשֶֽׁה׃ס way·yip̄·rōś ’eṯ- hā·’ō·hel ‘al- ham·miš·kān way·yā·śem ’eṯ- miḵ·sêh hā·’ō·hel ‘ā·lāw mil·mā·‘ə·lāh ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh ’eṯ- ṣiw·wāh mō·šeh — WLC · 19

Moses took the Testimony and placed it in the ark, attaching the poles to the ark; and he set the mercy seat atop… the ark.
𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤄𐤏𐤃𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤊𐤐𐤓𐤕 𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤌𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤍
וַיִּקַּ֞ח הָעֵדֻת֙ וַיִּתֵּ֤ן אֶת־ אֶל־ הָ֣אָרֹ֔ן וַיָּ֥שֶׂם אֶת־ הַבַּדִּ֖ים עַל־ הָאָרֹ֑ן וַיִּתֵּ֧ן אֶת־ הַכַּפֹּ֛רֶת עַל־ מִלְמָֽעְלָה׃ הָאָרֹ֖ן way·yiq·qaḥ hā·‘ê·ḏuṯ way·yit·tên ’eṯ- ’el- hā·’ā·rōn way·yā·śem ’eṯ- hab·bad·dîm ‘al- hā·’ā·rōn way·yit·tên ’eṯ- hak·kap·pō·reṯ ‘al- mil·mā·‘ə·lāh hā·’ā·rōn — WLC · 20

Then he brought the ark into the tabernacle, put up the veil for the screen, and shielded off the ark of the Testimony, just as the LORD had commanded him.

Moses placed the table in the Tent of Meeting on the north side of the tabernacle, outside the veil.

He also placed the lampstand in the Tent of Meeting opposite the table on the south side of the tabernacle

Moses placed the gold altar in the Tent of Meeting, in front of the veil,

and he burned fragrant incense on it, just as the LORD had commanded him.

Then he put up the curtain at the entrance to the tabernacle.

- He placed the altar of burnt offering near the entrance to the tabernacle, the Tent of Meeting, and offered on it the burnt offering and the grain offering, just as the LORD had commanded him.

He placed the basin between the Tent of Meeting… and the altar and put water in it for washing;

They washed whenever they entered… the Tent of Meeting or approached… the altar, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

And Moses set up the courtyard around the tabernacle and the altar, and he hung the curtain for the entrance to the courtyard. So Moses finished the work.

The Cloud and the Glory

Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

Moses was unable… to enter… the Tent of Meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

Whenever the cloud was lifted from above the tabernacle, the Israelites… would set out through all the stages of their journey.

If the cloud was not lifted, they would not set out until the day it was taken up.

For the cloud of the LORD was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel through all their journeys.
