Chapter 4
Moses’ Staff
1
Then Moses answered -, “What if they do not believe me or listen to my voice? For they may say, ‘The LORD has not appeared to you.’”

מֹשֶׁה֙ וַיַּ֤עַן וַיֹּ֔אמֶר וְהֵן֙ לֹֽא־ יַאֲמִ֣ינוּ לִ֔י וְלֹ֥א יִשְׁמְע֖וּ בְּקֹלִ֑י כִּ֣י יֹֽאמְר֔וּ יְהוָֽה׃ לֹֽא־ נִרְאָ֥ה אֵלֶ֖יךָ mō·šeh way·ya·‘an way·yō·mer wə·hên lō- ya·’ă·mî·nū lî wə·lō yiš·mə·‘ū bə·qō·lî kî yō·mə·rū Yah·weh lō- nir·’āh ’ê·le·ḵā — WLC · 1

And the LORD asked him, “What is that in your hand?” “A staff,” he replied.

יְהוָ֖ה וַיֹּ֧אמֶר אֵלָ֛יו מַזֶּה בְיָדֶ֑ךָ מַטֶּֽה׃ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw maz·zɛh ḇə·yā·ḏe·ḵā maṭ·ṭeh way·yō·mer — WLC · 2

“Throw it on the ground,” said [the LORD]. So [Moses] threw it on the ground, and it became a snake, and [he] ran from it.

הַשְׁלִיכֵ֣הוּ אַ֔רְצָה וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ וַיַּשְׁלִיכֵ֥הוּ אַ֖רְצָה וַיְהִ֣י לְנָחָ֑שׁ מֹשֶׁ֖ה וַיָּ֥נָס מִפָּנָֽיו׃ haš·lî·ḵê·hū ’ar·ṣāh way·yō·mer way·yaš·lî·ḵê·hū ’ar·ṣāh way·hî lə·nā·ḥāš mō·šeh way·yā·nās mip·pā·nāw — WLC · 3

“Stretch out your hand and grab it by the tail,” the LORD said to Moses, [who] reached out his hand and caught [the snake], and it turned back into a staff in his hand.

שְׁלַח֙ יָֽדְךָ֔ וֶאֱחֹ֖ז בִּזְנָב֑וֹ יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֔ה וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח יָדוֹ֙ וַיַּ֣חֲזֶק בּ֔וֹ וַיְהִ֥י לְמַטֶּ֖ה בְּכַפּֽוֹ׃ šə·laḥ yā·ḏə·ḵā we·’ĕ·ḥōz biz·nā·ḇōw Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- mō·šeh way·yiš·laḥ yā·ḏōw way·ya·ḥă·zeq bōw way·hî lə·maṭ·ṭeh bə·ḵap·pōw — WLC · 4

“This is so that they may believe that the LORD, the God of their fathers— the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob— has appeared to you.”

Moses’ Hand

Furthermore, the LORD said to [Moses], “Put… your hand inside your cloak. So he put his hand inside his cloak, and when he took it out,… his hand [was] leprous, white as snow.

ע֗וֹד יְהוָ֨ה וַיֹּאמֶר֩ ל֜וֹ הָֽבֵא־ נָ֤א יָֽדְךָ֙ בְּחֵיקֶ֔ךָ וַיָּבֵ֥א יָד֖וֹ בְּחֵיק֑וֹ וַיּ֣וֹצִאָ֔הּ וְהִנֵּ֥ה יָד֖וֹ מְצֹרַ֥עַת כַּשָּֽׁלֶג׃ ‘ō·wḏ Yah·weh way·yō·mer lōw hā·ḇê- nā yā·ḏə·ḵā bə·ḥê·qe·ḵā way·yā·ḇê yā·ḏōw bə·ḥê·qōw way·yō·w·ṣi·’āh wə·hin·nêh yā·ḏōw mə·ṣō·ra·‘aṯ kaš·šā·leḡ — WLC · 6

“Put your hand back inside your cloak,” said [the LORD]. So [Moses] put his hand back inside his cloak, and when he took it out,… it was restored, like the rest of his skin.

יָֽדְךָ֙ הָשֵׁ֤ב אֶל־ חֵיקֶ֔ךָ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר יָד֖וֹ וַיָּ֥שֶׁב אֶל־ חֵיק֑וֹ וַיּֽוֹצִאָהּ֙ מֵֽחֵיק֔וֹ וְהִנֵּה־ שָׁ֖בָה כִּבְשָׂרֽוֹ׃ yā·ḏə·ḵā hā·šêḇ ’el- ḥê·qe·ḵā way·yō·mer yā·ḏōw way·yā·šeḇ ’el- ḥê·qōw way·yō·w·ṣi·’āh mê·ḥê·qōw wə·hin·nêh- šā·ḇāh kiḇ·śā·rōw — WLC · 7

[And the LORD said,] “If they refuse to believe you or heed the witness of the first sign, they may believe [that] of the second…
𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤋𐤒𐤋 𐤄𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤌𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤒𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤀𐤕
וְהָיָה֙ אִם־ לֹ֣א יַאֲמִ֣ינוּ לָ֔ךְ וְלֹ֣א יִשְׁמְע֔וּ לְקֹ֖ל הָרִאשׁ֑וֹן הָאֹ֣ת וְהֶֽאֱמִ֔ינוּ לְקֹ֖ל הָאַחֲרֽוֹן׃ הָאֹ֥ת wə·hā·yāh ’im- lō ya·’ă·mî·nū lāḵ wə·lō yiš·mə·‘ū lə·qōl hā·ri·šō·wn hā·’ōṯ wə·he·’ĕ·mî·nū lə·qōl hā·’a·ḥă·rō·wn hā·’ōṯ — WLC · 8

But if they do not believe even these… two signs or listen to your voice, take some water from the Nile and pour it on the dry ground. Then the water you take from the Nile will become blood on the ground.”

וְהָיָ֡ה אִם־ לֹ֣א יַאֲמִ֡ינוּ גַּם֩ הָאֵ֗לֶּה וְלֹ֤א לִשְׁנֵ֨י הָאֹת֜וֹת יִשְׁמְעוּן֙ לְקֹלֶ֔ךָ וְלָקַחְתָּ֙ מִמֵּימֵ֣י הַיְאֹ֔ר וְשָׁפַכְתָּ֖ הַיַּבָּשָׁ֑ה וְהָי֤וּ הַמַּ֙יִם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תִּקַּ֣ח מִן־ הַיְאֹ֔ר וְהָי֥וּ לְדָ֖ם בַּיַּבָּֽשֶׁת׃ wə·hā·yāh ’im- lō ya·’ă·mî·nū gam hā·’êl·leh wə·lō liš·nê hā·’ō·ṯō·wṯ yiš·mə·‘ūn lə·qō·le·ḵā wə·lā·qaḥ·tā mim·mê·mê hay·’ōr wə·šā·p̄aḵ·tā hay·yab·bā·šāh wə·hā·yū ham·ma·yim ’ă·šer tiq·qaḥ min- hay·’ōr wə·hā·yū lə·ḏām bay·yab·bā·šeṯ — WLC · 9
The Appointment of Aaron

“Please, Lord,” Moses replied…, “I have never… been eloquent, neither in the past nor since You have spoken to Your servant, for I am slow of speech and tongue.”

בִּ֣י אֲדֹנָי֒ מֹשֶׁ֣ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ יְהוָה֮ אָנֹ֗כִי לֹא֩ אִ֨ישׁ דְּבָרִ֜ים גַּ֤ם מִתְּמוֹל֙ גַּ֣ם מִשִּׁלְשֹׁ֔ם גַּ֛ם מֵאָ֥ז דַּבֶּרְךָ אֶל־ עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ כִּ֧י אָנֹֽכִי׃ כְבַד־ פֶּ֛ה וּכְבַ֥ד לָשׁ֖וֹן bî ’ă·ḏō·nāy mō·šeh way·yō·mer ’el- Yah·weh ’ā·nō·ḵî lō ’îš də·ḇā·rîm gam mit·tə·mō·wl gam miš·šil·šōm gam mê·’āz dab·bɛr·ḵå̄ ’el- ‘aḇ·de·ḵā kî ’ā·nō·ḵî ḵə·ḇaḏ- peh ū·ḵə·ḇaḏ lā·šō·wn — WLC · 10

And the LORD said to him, “Who gave man his mouth? Or who makes the mute or the deaf,… the sighted or the blind? Is it not I, the LORD?
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤌𐤉 𐤔𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤐𐤄 𐤀𐤅 𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤌 𐤀𐤅 𐤇𐤓𐤔 𐤀𐤅 𐤐𐤒𐤇 𐤀𐤅 𐤏𐤅𐤓 𐤄𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄
יְהוָ֜ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֗יו מִ֣י שָׂ֣ם לָֽאָדָם֒ פֶּה֮ א֚וֹ מִֽי־ יָשׂ֣וּם אִלֵּ֔ם א֣וֹ חֵרֵ֔שׁ א֥וֹ פִקֵּ֖חַ א֣וֹ עִוֵּ֑ר הֲלֹ֥א אָנֹכִ֖י יְהוָֽה׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw mî śām lā·’ā·ḏām peh ’ōw mî- yā·śūm ’il·lêm ’ōw ḥê·rêš ’ōw p̄iq·qê·aḥ ’ōw ‘iw·wêr hă·lō ’ā·nō·ḵî Yah·weh — WLC · 11

Now go! I will help you… as you speak, and I will teach you what to say.”

וְעַתָּ֖ה לֵ֑ךְ וְאָנֹכִי֙ אֶֽהְיֶ֣ה עִם־ פִּ֔יךָ וְהוֹרֵיתִ֖יךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר תְּדַבֵּֽר׃ wə·‘at·tāh lêḵ wə·’ā·nō·ḵî ’eh·yeh ‘im- pî·ḵā wə·hō·w·rê·ṯî·ḵā ’ă·šer tə·ḏab·bêr — WLC · 12

But Moses replied, “Please, Lord, send… someone else…”
𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤁𐤉 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤔𐤋𐤇 𐤍𐤀 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤕𐤔𐤋𐤇
וַיֹּ֖אמֶר בִּ֣י אֲדֹנָ֑י שְֽׁלַֽח־ נָ֖א בְּיַד־ תִּשְׁלָֽח׃ way·yō·mer bî ’ă·ḏō·nāy šə·laḥ- nā bə·yaḏ- tiš·lāḥ — WLC · 13

Then the anger of the LORD burned against Moses, and He said, “Is not Aaron the Levite your brother? I know that he can speak well…, and he is now on his way to meet you. When he sees you, he will be glad in his heart.
𐤀𐤐 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤓 𐤁𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤉 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤕𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤅𐤂𐤌 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤑𐤀 𐤋𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤓𐤀𐤊 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤇 𐤁𐤋𐤁𐤅
אַ֨ף יְהוָ֜ה וַיִּֽחַר־ בְּמֹשֶׁ֗ה וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הֲלֹ֨א אַהֲרֹ֤ן הַלֵּוִ֔י אָחִ֙יךָ֙ יָדַ֕עְתִּי כִּֽי־ ה֑וּא דַבֵּ֥ר יְדַבֵּ֖ר וְגַ֤ם הוּא֙ הִנֵּה־ יֹצֵ֣א לִקְרָאתֶ֔ךָ וְרָאֲךָ֖ וְשָׂמַ֥ח בְּלִבּֽוֹ׃ ’ap̄ Yah·weh way·yi·ḥar- bə·mō·šeh way·yō·mer hă·lō ’a·hă·rōn hal·lê·wî ’ā·ḥî·ḵā yā·ḏa‘·tî kî- hū ḏab·bêr yə·ḏab·bêr wə·ḡam hū hin·nêh- yō·ṣê liq·rā·ṯe·ḵā wə·rā·’ă·ḵā wə·śā·maḥ bə·lib·bōw — WLC · 14

You are to speak to him and put the words in his mouth. I will help… both of you to speak…, and I will teach you what to do.

וְדִבַּרְתָּ֣ אֵלָ֔יו וְשַׂמְתָּ֥ הַדְּבָרִ֖ים אֶת־ בְּפִ֑יו וְאָנֹכִ֗י אֶֽהְיֶ֤ה עִם־ פִּ֙יךָ֙ וְעִם־ פִּ֔יהוּ וְהוֹרֵיתִ֣י אֶתְכֶ֔ם אֵ֖ת אֲשֶׁ֥ר תַּעֲשֽׂוּן׃ wə·ḏib·bar·tā ’ê·lāw wə·śam·tā had·də·ḇā·rîm ’eṯ- bə·p̄îw wə·’ā·nō·ḵî ’eh·yeh ‘im- pî·ḵā wə·‘im- pî·hū wə·hō·w·rê·ṯî ’eṯ·ḵem ’êṯ ’ă·šer ta·‘ă·śūn — WLC · 15

He will speak to the people for you. He will be your spokesman, and it will be as if you were God to him.

ה֥וּא וְדִבֶּר־ אֶל־ הָעָ֑ם לְךָ֖ הוּא֙ וְהָ֤יָה יִֽהְיֶה־ לְּךָ֣ לְפֶ֔ה תִּֽהְיֶה־ וְאַתָּ֖ה לֵֽאלֹהִֽים׃ לּ֥וֹ hū wə·ḏib·ber- ’el- hā·‘ām lə·ḵā hū wə·hā·yāh yih·yeh- lə·ḵā lə·p̄eh tih·yeh- wə·’at·tāh lê·lō·hîm lōw — WLC · 16

But take this staff in your hand so you can perform signs with it.”

וְאֶת־ תִּקַּ֣ח הַזֶּ֖ה הַמַּטֶּ֥ה בְּיָדֶ֑ךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר תַּעֲשֶׂה־ בּ֖וֹ אֶת־ הָאֹתֹֽת׃פ wə·’eṯ- tiq·qaḥ haz·zeh ham·maṭ·ṭeh bə·yā·ḏe·ḵā ’ă·šer ta·‘ă·śeh- bōw ’eṯ- hā·’ō·ṯōṯ — WLC · 17
Moses Leaves for Egypt

Then Moses went back to his father-in-law Jethro and said to him, “Please let me return… to my brothers in Egypt to see if they are still alive.” “Go in peace,” [Jethro] replied…

Now the LORD had said to Moses in Midian, “Go back to Egypt, for all the men who sought to kill you are dead.”

So Moses took his wife and sons, put them on a donkey, and headed back vvv to Egypt. And [he] took the staff of God in his hand.

The LORD… instructed Moses, “When you go back to Egypt, see that you perform before Pharaoh all the wonders that I have put within your power. But I will harden his heart so that he will not let the people go. -

Then tell… Pharaoh [that] this is what the LORD says: ‘Israel is My firstborn son,

וְאָמַרְתָּ֖ אֶל־ פַּרְעֹ֑ה כֹּ֚ה יְהוָ֔ה אָמַ֣ר יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ בְכֹרִ֖י בְּנִ֥י wə·’ā·mar·tā ’el- par·‘ōh kōh Yah·weh ’ā·mar yiś·rā·’êl ḇə·ḵō·rî bə·nî — WLC · 22

and I told you… to let My son go so that he may worship Me. But [since] you have refused to let him go, behold, I will kill your firstborn son!’”

וָאֹמַ֣ר אֵלֶ֗יךָ בְּנִי֙ שַׁלַּ֤ח אֶת־ וְיַֽעַבְדֵ֔נִי וַתְּמָאֵ֖ן לְשַׁלְּח֑וֹ הִנֵּה֙ אָנֹכִ֣י הֹרֵ֔ג אֶת־ בְּכֹרֶֽךָ׃ בִּנְךָ֖ wā·’ō·mar ’ê·le·ḵā bə·nî šal·laḥ ’eṯ- wə·ya·‘aḇ·ḏê·nî wat·tə·mā·’ên lə·šal·lə·ḥōw hin·nêh ’ā·nō·ḵî hō·rêḡ ’eṯ- bə·ḵō·re·ḵā bin·ḵā — WLC · 23

Now at a lodging place along the way, vvv the LORD met [Moses] and was about to kill him.

בַּמָּל֑וֹן בַדֶּ֖רֶךְ וַיְהִ֥י יְהוָ֔ה וַיִּפְגְּשֵׁ֣הוּ וַיְבַקֵּ֖שׁ הֲמִיתֽוֹ׃ bam·mā·lō·wn ḇad·de·reḵ way·hî Yah·weh way·yip̄·gə·šê·hū way·ḇaq·qêš hă·mî·ṯōw — WLC · 24

But Zipporah took a flint knife, cut off her son’s foreskin, and touched it to [Moses’] feet. “Surely you [are] a bridegroom of blood to me,” she said.

צִפֹּרָ֜ה וַתִּקַּ֨ח צֹ֗ר וַתִּכְרֹת֙ אֶת־ בְּנָ֔הּ עָרְלַ֣ת וַתַּגַּ֖ע לְרַגְלָ֑יו כִּ֧י אַתָּ֖ה חֲתַן־ דָּמִ֛ים לִֽי׃ וַתֹּ֕אמֶר ṣip·pō·rāh wat·tiq·qaḥ ṣōr wat·tiḵ·rōṯ ’eṯ- bə·nāh ‘ā·rə·laṯ wat·tag·ga‘ lə·raḡ·lāw kî ’at·tāh ḥă·ṯan- dā·mîm lî wat·tō·mer — WLC · 25

So [the LORD] let him alone… (When she said, “bridegroom of blood,” she was referring to the circumcision.)

The People Believe Moses and Aaron

Meanwhile, the LORD had said to Aaron, “Go and meet Moses in the wilderness.” So he went and met [Moses] at the mountain of God and kissed him.

יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶֽל־ אַהֲרֹ֔ן לֵ֛ךְ לִקְרַ֥את מֹשֶׁ֖ה הַמִּדְבָּ֑רָה וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ וַֽיִּפְגְּשֵׁ֛הוּ בְּהַ֥ר הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים וַיִּשַּׁק־ לֽוֹ׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- ’a·hă·rōn lêḵ liq·raṯ mō·šeh ham·miḏ·bā·rāh way·yê·leḵ way·yip̄·gə·šê·hū bə·har hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yiš·šaq- lōw — WLC · 27

And Moses told Aaron everything… the LORD had sent him to say, and all the signs He had commanded him to perform.

מֹשֶׁה֙ וַיַּגֵּ֤ד לְאַֽהֲרֹ֔ן אֵ֛ת כָּל־ דִּבְרֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר שְׁלָח֑וֹ וְאֵ֥ת כָּל־ הָאֹתֹ֖ת אֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוָּֽהוּ׃ mō·šeh way·yag·gêḏ lə·’a·hă·rōn ’êṯ kāl- diḇ·rê Yah·weh ’ă·šer šə·lā·ḥōw wə·’êṯ kāl- hā·’ō·ṯōṯ ’ă·šer ṣiw·wā·hū — WLC · 28

Then Moses and Aaron went and assembled all the elders vvv of the Israelites,

מֹשֶׁ֖ה וְאַהֲרֹ֑ן וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ וַיַּ֣אַסְפ֔וּ אֶת־ כָּל־ זִקְנֵ֖י בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ mō·šeh wə·’a·hă·rōn way·yê·leḵ way·ya·’as·p̄ū ’eṯ- kāl- ziq·nê bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 29

and Aaron relayed everything… the LORD had said to Moses. And [Moses] performed the signs before the people,

אַהֲרֹ֔ן אֵ֚ת וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר כָּל־ הַדְּבָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֖ה דִּבֶּ֥ר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיַּ֥עַשׂ הָאֹתֹ֖ת לְעֵינֵ֥י הָעָֽם׃ ’a·hă·rōn ’êṯ way·ḏab·bêr kāl- had·də·ḇā·rîm ’ă·šer- Yah·weh dib·ber ’el- mō·šeh way·ya·‘aś hā·’ō·ṯōṯ lə·‘ê·nê hā·‘ām — WLC · 30

and [they] believed. And when they heard that the LORD had attended to the Israelites… and had seen their affliction, they bowed down and worshiped.
