Chapter 34
New Stone Tablets
1
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets like the originals, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke.
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤐𐤎𐤋 𐤋𐤊 𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤇𐤕 𐤊𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤕𐤁𐤕𐤉 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤋𐤇𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤋𐤇𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤁𐤓𐤕
יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֔ה פְּסָל־ לְךָ֛ שְׁנֵֽי־ אֲבָנִ֖ים לֻחֹ֥ת כָּרִאשֹׁנִ֑ים וְכָתַבְתִּי֙ עַל־ הַלֻּחֹ֔ת אֶת־ הַדְּבָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָי֛וּ עַל־ הָרִאשֹׁנִ֖ים הַלֻּחֹ֥ת אֲשֶׁ֥ר שִׁבַּֽרְתָּ׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- mō·šeh pə·sāl- lə·ḵā šə·nê- ’ă·ḇā·nîm lu·ḥōṯ kā·ri·šō·nîm wə·ḵā·ṯaḇ·tî ‘al- hal·lu·ḥōṯ ’eṯ- had·də·ḇā·rîm ’ă·šer hā·yū ‘al- hā·ri·šō·nîm hal·lu·ḥōṯ ’ă·šer šib·bar·tā — WLC · 1

Be ready in the morning, and come up on Mount Sinai… to present yourself before Me… on the mountaintop…

וֶהְיֵ֥ה נָכ֖וֹן לַבֹּ֑קֶר וְעָלִ֤יתָ בַבֹּ֙קֶר֙ הַ֣ר סִינַ֔י אֶל־ וְנִצַּבְתָּ֥ לִ֛י שָׁ֖ם עַל־ רֹ֥אשׁ הָהָֽר׃ weh·yêh nā·ḵō·wn lab·bō·qer wə·‘ā·lî·ṯā ḇab·bō·qer har sî·nay ’el- wə·niṣ·ṣaḇ·tā lî šām ‘al- rōš hā·hār — WLC · 2

No one may go up with you; in fact, no one may be seen anywhere on the mountain— not even the flocks or herds may graze in front of… the mountain.”

לֹֽא־ וְאִישׁ֙ יַעֲלֶ֣ה עִמָּ֔ךְ וְגַם־ אַל־ אִ֥ישׁ יֵרָ֖א בְּכָל־ הָהָ֑ר אַל־ גַּם־ הַצֹּ֤אן וְהַבָּקָר֙ יִרְע֔וּ אֶל־ מ֖וּל הַהֽוּא׃ הָהָ֥ר lō- wə·’îš ya·‘ă·leh ‘im·māḵ wə·ḡam- ’al- ’îš yê·rā bə·ḵāl hā·hār ’al- gam- haṣ·ṣōn wə·hab·bā·qār yir·‘ū ’el- mūl ha·hū hā·hār — WLC · 3

So Moses chiseled out two stone tablets like the originals. He rose early in the morning, and taking the two stone tablets in his hands, he went up… Mount Sinai as the LORD had commanded him.
𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤎𐤋 𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤇𐤕 𐤊𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤌 𐤁𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤇𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤓 𐤎𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤑𐤅𐤄
מֹשֶׁ֤ה וַיִּפְסֹ֡ל שְׁנֵֽי־ אֲבָנִ֜ים לֻחֹ֨ת כָּרִאשֹׁנִ֗ים וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֨ם בַבֹּ֙קֶר֙ וַיִּקַּ֣ח שְׁנֵ֖י אֲבָנִֽים׃ לֻחֹ֥ת בְּיָד֔וֹ וַיַּ֙עַל֙ אֶל־ הַ֣ר סִינַ֔י כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר יְהוָ֖ה אֹת֑וֹ צִוָּ֥ה mō·šeh way·yip̄·sōl šə·nê- ’ă·ḇā·nîm lu·ḥōṯ kā·ri·šō·nîm way·yaš·kêm ḇab·bō·qer way·yiq·qaḥ šə·nê ’ă·ḇā·nîm lu·ḥōṯ bə·yā·ḏōw way·ya·‘al ’el- har sî·nay ka·’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ō·ṯōw ṣiw·wāh — WLC · 4

And the LORD descended in a cloud, stood with him there, and proclaimed His name, the LORD.

יְהוָה֙ וַיֵּ֤רֶד בֶּֽעָנָ֔ן וַיִּתְיַצֵּ֥ב עִמּ֖וֹ שָׁ֑ם וַיִּקְרָ֥א בְשֵׁ֖ם יְהוָֽה׃ Yah·weh way·yê·reḏ be·‘ā·nān way·yiṯ·yaṣ·ṣêḇ ‘im·mōw šām way·yiq·rā ḇə·šêm Yah·weh — WLC · 5

Then the LORD passed in front of [Moses] and called out: “The LORD, the LORD God, is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion and faithfulness,
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤁𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤓𐤇𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤇𐤍𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤓𐤊 𐤀𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤓𐤁 𐤇𐤎𐤃 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤕
יְהוָ֥ה׀ וַיַּעֲבֹ֨ר עַל־ פָּנָיו֮ וַיִּקְרָא֒ יְהוָ֣ה׀ יְהוָ֔ה אֵ֥ל רַח֖וּם וְחַנּ֑וּן אֶ֥רֶךְ אַפַּ֖יִם וְרַב־ חֶ֥סֶד וֶאֱמֶֽת׀ Yah·weh way·ya·‘ă·ḇōr ‘al- pā·nāw way·yiq·rā Yah·weh Yah·weh ’êl ra·ḥūm wə·ḥan·nūn ’e·reḵ ’ap·pa·yim wə·raḇ- ḥe·seḏ wɛ·ʾɛ̆·mɛṯ — WLC · 6

maintaining loving devotion to a thousand [generations], forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin. Yet He will by no means vvv leave [the guilty] unpunished; He will visit the iniquity of the fathers on their children and grandchildren… to the third… and fourth generations.”

נֹצֵ֥ר חֶ֙סֶד֙ לָאֲלָפִ֔ים נֹשֵׂ֥א עָוֺ֛ן וָפֶ֖שַׁע וְחַטָּאָ֑ה לֹ֣א וְנַקֵּה֙ יְנַקֶּ֔ה פֹּקֵ֣ד׀ עֲוֺ֣ן אָב֗וֹת עַל־ בָּנִים֙ וְעַל־ בְּנֵ֣י בָנִ֔ים עַל־ שִׁלֵּשִׁ֖ים וְעַל־ רִבֵּעִֽים׃ nō·ṣêr ḥe·seḏ lā·’ă·lā·p̄îm nō·śê ‘ā·wōn wā·p̄e·ša‘ wə·ḥaṭ·ṭā·’āh lō wə·naq·qêh yə·naq·qeh pō·qêḏ ‘ă·wōn ’ā·ḇō·wṯ ‘al- bā·nîm wə·‘al- bə·nê ḇā·nîm ‘al- šil·lê·šîm wə·‘al- rib·bê·‘îm — WLC · 7

Moses immediately bowed down to the ground and worshiped.
𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤄𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤃 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤕𐤇𐤅
מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיְמַהֵ֖ר וַיִּקֹּ֥ד אַ֖רְצָה וַיִּשְׁתָּֽחוּ׃ mō·šeh way·ma·hêr way·yiq·qōḏ ’ar·ṣāh way·yiš·tā·ḥū — WLC · 8

“O Lord,” he said, “if I have indeed found favor in Your sight, my Lord, please go… with us. Although this is a stiff-necked… people, forgive our iniquity and sin, and take us as Your inheritance.”
𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤌 𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤕𐤉 𐤇𐤍 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤍𐤀 𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤍𐤀 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤒𐤔𐤄 𐤏𐤓𐤐 𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤎𐤋𐤇𐤕 𐤋𐤏𐤅𐤍𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤇𐤈𐤀𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤇𐤋𐤕𐤍𐤅
אֲדֹנָ֔י וַיֹּ֡אמֶר אִם־ מָצָ֨אתִי חֵ֤ן בְּעֵינֶ֙יךָ֙ אֲדֹנָ֖י נָא֩ יֵֽלֶךְ־ נָ֥א בְּקִרְבֵּ֑נוּ כִּ֤י ה֔וּא קְשֵׁה־ עֹ֙רֶף֙ עַם־ וְסָלַחְתָּ֛ לַעֲוֺנֵ֥נוּ וּלְחַטָּאתֵ֖נוּ וּנְחַלְתָּֽנוּ׃ ’ă·ḏō·nāy way·yō·mer ’im- mā·ṣā·ṯî ḥên bə·‘ê·ne·ḵā ’ă·ḏō·nāy nā yê·leḵ- nā bə·qir·bê·nū kî hū qə·šêh- ‘ō·rep̄ ‘am- wə·sā·laḥ·tā la·‘ă·wō·nê·nū ū·lə·ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯê·nū ū·nə·ḥal·tā·nū — WLC · 9
The LORD Renews the Covenant

And [the LORD] said, “Behold, I am making a covenant. Before all your people I will perform wonders that have never been done in any nation in all the world. All the people vvv among whom you live - will see the LORD’s work, for it [is] an awesome [thing] that I am doing with you.
𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤊𐤓𐤕 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤍𐤂𐤃 𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤌𐤊 𐤀𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤍𐤐𐤋𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤍𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤅𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤅𐤓𐤀𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤍𐤅𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤏𐤌𐤊
וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הִנֵּ֣ה אָנֹכִי֮ כֹּרֵ֣ת בְּרִית֒ נֶ֤גֶד כָּֽל־ עַמְּךָ֙ אֶעֱשֶׂ֣ה נִפְלָאֹ֔ת אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹֽא־ נִבְרְא֥וּ וּבְכָל־ הַגּוֹיִ֑ם בְכָל־ הָאָ֖רֶץ כָל־ הָ֠עָם אַתָּ֨ה בְקִרְבּ֜וֹ אֶת־ אֲשֶׁר־ וְרָאָ֣ה יְהוָה֙ מַעֲשֵׂ֤ה כִּֽי־ ה֔וּא נוֹרָ֣א אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲנִ֖י עֹשֶׂ֥ה עִמָּֽךְ׃ way·yō·mer hin·nêh ’ā·nō·ḵî kō·rêṯ bə·rîṯ ne·ḡeḏ kāl- ‘am·mə·ḵā ’e·‘ĕ·śeh nip̄·lā·’ōṯ ’ă·šer lō- niḇ·rə·’ū ū·ḇə·ḵāl hag·gō·w·yim ḇə·ḵāl- hā·’ā·reṣ ḵāl hā·‘ām ’at·tāh ḇə·qir·bōw ’eṯ- ’ă·šer- wə·rā·’āh Yah·weh ma·‘ă·śêh kî- hū nō·w·rā ’ă·šer ’ă·nî ‘ō·śeh ‘im·māḵ — WLC · 10

Observe what I command you this day… I will drive out before you the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

שְׁמָ֨ר־ לְךָ֔ אֵ֛ת אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָנֹכִ֖י מְצַוְּךָ֣ הַיּ֑וֹם הִנְנִ֧י גֹרֵ֣שׁ מִפָּנֶ֗יךָ אֶת־ הָאֱמֹרִי֙ וְהַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י וְהַחִתִּי֙ וְהַפְּרִזִּ֔י וְהַחִוִּ֖י וְהַיְבוּסִֽי׃ šə·mār- lə·ḵā ’êṯ ’ă·šer ’ā·nō·ḵî mə·ṣaw·wə·ḵā hay·yō·wm hin·nî ḡō·rêš mip·pā·ne·ḵā ’eṯ- hā·’ĕ·mō·rî wə·hak·kə·na·‘ă·nî wə·ha·ḥit·tî wə·hap·pə·riz·zî wə·ha·ḥiw·wî wə·hay·ḇū·sî — WLC · 11

Be careful not to make a treaty with the inhabitants of the land you are entering…, lest they become a snare in your midst.
𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤊 𐤐𐤍 𐤕𐤊𐤓𐤕 𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤔𐤁 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤁𐤀 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄 𐤐𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤒𐤔 𐤁𐤒𐤓𐤁𐤊
הִשָּׁ֣מֶר לְךָ֗ פֶּן־ תִּכְרֹ֤ת בְּרִית֙ לְיוֹשֵׁ֣ב הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אַתָּ֖ה בָּ֣א עָלֶ֑יהָ פֶּן־ יִהְיֶ֥ה לְמוֹקֵ֖שׁ בְּקִרְבֶּֽךָ׃ hiš·šā·mer lə·ḵā pen- tiḵ·rōṯ bə·rîṯ lə·yō·wō·šêḇ hā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer ’at·tāh bā ‘ā·le·hā pen- yih·yeh lə·mō·w·qêš bə·qir·be·ḵā — WLC · 12

Rather, you must tear down their altars, smash their sacred stones, and chop down their Asherah poles.

כִּ֤י אֶת־ תִּתֹּצ֔וּן וְאֶת־ מִזְבְּחֹתָם֙ תְּשַׁבֵּר֑וּן וְאֶת־ מַצֵּבֹתָ֖ם תִּכְרֹתֽוּן׃ אֲשֵׁרָ֖יו kî ’eṯ- tit·tō·ṣūn wə·’eṯ- miz·bə·ḥō·ṯām tə·šab·bê·rūn wə·’eṯ- maṣ·ṣê·ḇō·ṯām tiḵ·rō·ṯūn ’ă·šê·rāw — WLC · 13

For you must not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name [is] Jealous, [is] a jealous… God.

כִּ֛י לֹ֥א תִֽשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֖ה אַחֵ֑ר לְאֵ֣ל כִּ֤י יְהוָה֙ שְׁמ֔וֹ קַנָּ֣א קַנָּ֖א הֽוּא׃ אֵ֥ל kî lō ṯiš·ta·ḥă·weh ’a·ḥêr lə·’êl kî Yah·weh šə·mōw qan·nā qan·nā hū ’êl — WLC · 14

Do not make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, for when they prostitute themselves to their gods and sacrifice to [them], they will invite you, and you will eat their sacrifices.

פֶּן־ תִּכְרֹ֥ת בְּרִ֖ית לְיוֹשֵׁ֣ב הָאָ֑רֶץ וְזָנ֣וּ׀ אַחֲרֵ֣י אֱלֹֽהֵיהֶ֗ם וְזָבְחוּ֙ לֵאלֹ֣הֵיהֶ֔ם וְקָרָ֣א לְךָ֔ וְאָכַלְתָּ֖ מִזִּבְחֽוֹ׃ pen- tiḵ·rōṯ bə·rîṯ lə·yō·wō·šêḇ hā·’ā·reṣ wə·zā·nū ’a·ḥă·rê ’ĕ·lō·hê·hem wə·zā·ḇə·ḥū lê·lō·hê·hem wə·qā·rā lə·ḵā wə·’ā·ḵal·tā miz·ziḇ·ḥōw — WLC · 15

And when you take some of their daughters as brides for your sons, their daughters will prostitute themselves to their gods and cause your sons [to do the same] -…

You must redeem the firstborn of a donkey with a lamb; but if you do not redeem it, you are to break its neck. You must redeem all the firstborn of your sons. No one shall appear before Me empty-handed.

And you are to celebrate the Feast of Weeks with the firstfruits of the wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the turn of the year.

Three times a year all your males… are to appear before the Lord GOD, the God of Israel.

For I will drive out the nations before you and enlarge your borders, and no one will covet your land when you go up three times a year to appear before the LORD your God.

The LORD also said to Moses, “Write down these words, for in accordance with… these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.”

So Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking… water. [He wrote] on the tablets the words of the covenant— the Ten Commandments.

וַֽיְהִי־ שָׁ֣ם עִם־ יְהוָ֗ה אַרְבָּעִ֥ים יוֹם֙ וְאַרְבָּעִ֣ים לַ֔יְלָה לֹ֣א אָכַ֔ל לֶ֚חֶם שָׁתָ֑ה וַיִּכְתֹּ֣ב לֹ֣א וּמַ֖יִם עַל־ הַלֻּחֹ֗ת אֵ֚ת הַדְּבָרִֽים׃ הַבְּרִ֔ית עֲשֶׂ֖רֶת דִּבְרֵ֣י way·hî- šām ‘im- Yah·weh ’ar·bā·‘îm yō·wm wə·’ar·bā·‘îm lay·lāh lō ’ā·ḵal le·ḥem šā·ṯāh way·yiḵ·tōḇ lō ū·ma·yim ‘al- hal·lu·ḥōṯ ’êṯ had·də·ḇā·rîm hab·bə·rîṯ ‘ă·śe·reṯ diḇ·rê — WLC · 28

And when Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands - -, he vvv was unaware that vvv his face had become radiant from speaking with [the LORD].

Aaron and all the Israelites… looked at Moses, and behold, vvv his face was radiant. And they were afraid to approach him.

But Moses called out to them; so Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses spoke to them.

And after this all the Israelites… came near, and [Moses] commanded them to do everything that the LORD… had told him on Mount Sinai.

When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face.

But whenever Moses went in before the LORD to speak with Him, he would remove the veil until he came out. And when he came out, he would tell… the Israelites… what he had been commanded,
