Chapter 24
The Covenant Sealed
1
Then [the LORD] said to Moses, “Come up to the LORD— you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of Israel’s elders— and you are to worship at a distance.
𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤍𐤃𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤄𐤔𐤕𐤇𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤓𐤇𐤒
אָמַ֜ר וְאֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֨ה עֲלֵ֣ה אֶל־ יְהוָ֗ה אַתָּה֙ וְאַהֲרֹן֙ נָדָ֣ב וַאֲבִיה֔וּא וְשִׁבְעִ֖ים יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל מִזִּקְנֵ֣י וְהִשְׁתַּחֲוִיתֶ֖ם מֵרָחֹֽק׃ ’ā·mar wə·’el- mō·šeh ‘ă·lêh ’el- Yah·weh ’at·tāh wə·’a·hă·rōn nā·ḏāḇ wa·’ă·ḇî·hū wə·šiḇ·‘îm yiś·rā·’êl miz·ziq·nê wə·hiš·ta·ḥă·wî·ṯem mê·rā·ḥōq — WLC · 1

Moses alone… shall approach the LORD, but the others {must} not come near. And the people may not go up with him.”

מֹשֶׁ֤ה לְבַדּוֹ֙ אֶל־ וְנִגַּ֨שׁ יְהוָ֔ה וְהֵ֖ם לֹ֣א יִגָּ֑שׁוּ וְהָעָ֕ם לֹ֥א יַעֲל֖וּ עִמּֽוֹ׃ mō·šeh lə·ḇad·dōw ’el- wə·nig·gaš Yah·weh wə·hêm lō yig·gā·šū wə·hā·‘ām lō ya·‘ă·lū ‘im·mōw — WLC · 2

When Moses came and told the people all the words and ordinances of the LORD, [they] all responded with one… voice: “All the words that the LORD has spoken, we will do.”

מֹשֶׁ֗ה וַיָּבֹ֣א וַיְסַפֵּ֤ר לָעָם֙ אֵ֚ת כָּל־ דִּבְרֵ֣י וְאֵ֖ת כָּל־ הַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֑ים יְהוָ֔ה הָעָ֜ם כָּל־ וַיַּ֨עַן אֶחָד֙ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ ק֤וֹל כָּל־ הַדְּבָרִ֛ים אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֖ה דִּבֶּ֥ר נַעֲשֶֽׂה׃ mō·šeh way·yā·ḇō way·sap·pêr lā·‘ām ’êṯ kāl- diḇ·rê wə·’êṯ kāl- ham·miš·pā·ṭîm Yah·weh hā·‘ām kāl- way·ya·‘an ’e·ḥāḏ way·yō·mə·rū qō·wl kāl- had·də·ḇā·rîm ’ă·šer- Yah·weh dib·ber na·‘ă·śeh — WLC · 3

And Moses wrote down all the words of the LORD. {Early} the next morning he got up and built an altar at the base of the mountain, along with twelve… pillars for the twelve… tribes of Israel.
𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤕𐤁 𐤊𐤋 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤁𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤍 𐤌𐤆𐤁𐤇 𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤄𐤄𐤓 𐤅𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤌𐤑𐤁𐤄 𐤋𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤁𐤈𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋
מֹשֶׁ֗ה אֵ֚ת וַיִּכְתֹּ֣ב כָּל־ דִּבְרֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה בַּבֹּ֔קֶר וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֣ם וַיִּ֥בֶן מִזְבֵּ֖חַ תַּ֣חַת הָהָ֑ר וּשְׁתֵּ֤ים עֶשְׂרֵה֙ מַצֵּבָ֔ה לִשְׁנֵ֥ים עָשָׂ֖ר שִׁבְטֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ mō·šeh ’êṯ way·yiḵ·tōḇ kāl- diḇ·rê Yah·weh bab·bō·qer way·yaš·kêm way·yi·ḇen miz·bê·aḥ ta·ḥaṯ hā·hār ū·šə·têm ‘eś·rêh maṣ·ṣê·ḇāh liš·nêm ‘ā·śār šiḇ·ṭê yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 4

Then he sent out some young men of Israel…, and they offered burnt offerings and sacrificed young bulls as peace offerings to the LORD.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֗ח אֶֽת־ נַעֲרֵי֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בְּנֵ֣י וַיַּֽעֲל֖וּ עֹלֹ֑ת וַֽיִּזְבְּח֞וּ פָּרִֽים׃ שְׁלָמִ֛ים זְבָחִ֧ים לַיהוָ֖ה way·yiš·laḥ ’eṯ- na·‘ă·rê yiś·rā·’êl bə·nê way·ya·‘ă·lū ‘ō·lōṯ way·yiz·bə·ḥū pā·rîm šə·lā·mîm zə·ḇā·ḥîm Yah·weh — WLC · 5

Moses took half of the blood and put [it] in bowls, and the other half… he splattered on the altar.

מֹשֶׁה֙ וַיִּקַּ֤ח חֲצִ֣י הַדָּ֔ם וַיָּ֖שֶׂם בָּאַגָּנֹ֑ת וַחֲצִ֣י הַדָּ֔ם זָרַ֖ק עַל־ הַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃ mō·šeh way·yiq·qaḥ ḥă·ṣî had·dām way·yā·śem bā·’ag·gā·nōṯ wa·ḥă·ṣî had·dām zā·raq ‘al- ham·miz·bê·aḥ — WLC · 6

Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it… to the people, who replied, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient.”

וַיִּקַּח֙ סֵ֣פֶר הַבְּרִ֔ית וַיִּקְרָ֖א בְּאָזְנֵ֣י הָעָ֑ם וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ כֹּ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֖ה דִּבֶּ֥ר נַעֲשֶׂ֥ה וְנִשְׁמָֽע׃ way·yiq·qaḥ sê·p̄er hab·bə·rîṯ way·yiq·rā bə·’ā·zə·nê hā·‘ām way·yō·mə·rū kōl ’ă·šer- Yah·weh dib·ber na·‘ă·śeh wə·niš·mā‘ — WLC · 7

So Moses took the blood, splattered it on the people, and said, “This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words.”

מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶת־ וַיִּקַּ֤ח הַדָּ֔ם וַיִּזְרֹ֖ק עַל־ הָעָ֑ם וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הִנֵּ֤ה דַֽם־ הַבְּרִית֙ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יְהוָה֙ כָּרַ֤ת עִמָּכֶ֔ם עַ֥ל כָּל־ הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ הַדְּבָרִ֖ים mō·šeh ’eṯ- way·yiq·qaḥ had·dām way·yiz·rōq ‘al- hā·‘ām way·yō·mer hin·nêh ḏam- hab·bə·rîṯ ’ă·šer Yah·weh kā·raṯ ‘im·mā·ḵem ‘al kāl- hā·’êl·leh had·də·ḇā·rîm — WLC · 8

Then Moses went up with Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel,
𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤅𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤍𐤃𐤁 𐤅𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤅𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤆𐤒𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋
מֹשֶׁ֖ה וַיַּ֥עַל וְאַהֲרֹ֑ן נָדָב֙ וַאֲבִיה֔וּא וְשִׁבְעִ֖ים מִזִּקְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ mō·šeh way·ya·‘al wə·’a·hă·rōn nā·ḏāḇ wa·’ă·ḇî·hū wə·šiḇ·‘îm miz·ziq·nê yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 9

and they saw the God of Israel. Under His feet was a work like a pavement made of sapphire…, as clear as the sky itself.
𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤌𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤕 𐤄𐤎𐤐𐤉𐤓 𐤅𐤊𐤏𐤑𐤌 𐤋𐤈𐤄𐤓 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌
וַיִּרְא֕וּ אֵ֖ת אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְתַ֣חַת רַגְלָ֗יו כְּמַעֲשֵׂה֙ לִבְנַ֣ת הַסַּפִּ֔יר וּכְעֶ֥צֶם לָטֹֽהַר׃ הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם way·yir·’ū ’êṯ ’ĕ·lō·hê yiś·rā·’êl wə·ṯa·ḥaṯ raḡ·lāw kə·ma·‘ă·śêh liḇ·naṯ has·sap·pîr ū·ḵə·‘e·ṣem lā·ṭō·har haš·šā·ma·yim — WLC · 10

But God did not lay His hand on the nobles of Israel; they saw Him, and they ate and drank.

וְאֶל־ הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים לֹ֥א שָׁלַ֖ח יָד֑וֹ בְּנֵ֣י אֲצִילֵי֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַֽיֶּחֱזוּ֙ אֶת־ וַיֹּאכְל֖וּ וַיִּשְׁתּֽוּ׃ס wə·’el- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm lō šā·laḥ yā·ḏōw bə·nê ’ă·ṣî·lê yiś·rā·’êl way·ye·ḥĕ·zū ’eṯ- way·yō·ḵə·lū way·yiš·tū — WLC · 11
Moses on the Mountain

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Come up to Me on the mountain and stay here, so that I may give you the tablets of stone, with the law and commandments I have written for their instruction.”

יְהוָ֜ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֗ה עֲלֵ֥ה אֵלַ֛י הָהָ֖רָה וֶהְיֵה־ שָׁ֑ם וְאֶתְּנָ֨ה לְךָ֜ אֶת־ לֻחֹ֣ת הָאֶ֗בֶן וְהַתּוֹרָה֙ וְהַמִּצְוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר כָּתַ֖בְתִּי לְהוֹרֹתָֽם׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- mō·šeh ‘ă·lêh ’ê·lay hā·hā·rāh weh·yêh- šām wə·’et·tə·nāh lə·ḵā ’eṯ- lu·ḥōṯ hā·’e·ḇen wə·hat·tō·w·rāh wə·ham·miṣ·wāh ’ă·šer kā·ṯaḇ·tî lə·hō·w·rō·ṯām — WLC · 12

So Moses set out with Joshua his attendant and went up… on the mountain of God.

מֹשֶׁ֔ה וַיָּ֣קָם וִיהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ מְשָׁרְת֑וֹ וַיַּ֥עַל מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֶל־ הַ֥ר הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ mō·šeh way·yā·qām wî·hō·wō·šu·a‘ mə·šā·rə·ṯōw way·ya·‘al mō·šeh ’el- har hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm — WLC · 13

And he said to the elders, “Wait here for us until we return to you. Aaron and Hur are here with you. Whoever… has a dispute can go to them.”

וְאֶל־ אָמַר֙ הַזְּקֵנִ֤ים שְׁבוּ־ בָזֶ֔ה לָ֣נוּ עַ֥ד אֲשֶׁר־ נָשׁ֖וּב אֲלֵיכֶ֑ם אַהֲרֹ֤ן וְחוּר֙ וְהִנֵּ֨ה עִמָּכֶ֔ם מִי־ בַ֥עַל דְּבָרִ֖ים יִגַּ֥שׁ אֲלֵהֶֽם׃ wə·’el- ’ā·mar haz·zə·qê·nîm šə·ḇū- ḇā·zeh lā·nū ‘aḏ ’ă·šer- nā·šūḇ ’ă·lê·ḵem ’a·hă·rōn wə·ḥūr wə·hin·nêh ‘im·mā·ḵem mî- ḇa·‘al də·ḇā·rîm yig·gaš ’ă·lê·hem — WLC · 14

When Moses… went up on the mountain, the cloud covered it…,
𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤄𐤓 𐤄𐤏𐤍𐤍 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤎 𐤄𐤄𐤓
מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֶל־ וַיַּ֥עַל הָהָ֑ר הֶעָנָ֖ן אֶת־ וַיְכַ֥ס הָהָֽר׃ mō·šeh ’el- way·ya·‘al hā·hār he·‘ā·nān ’eṯ- way·ḵas hā·hār — WLC · 15

and the glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai. For six days the cloud covered it, and on the seventh day [the LORD] called to Moses from within the cloud.
𐤊𐤁𐤅𐤃 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤍 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤓 𐤎𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤔𐤔𐤕 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤏𐤍𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤎𐤄𐤅 𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤏𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤌𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤏𐤍𐤍
כְּבוֹד־ יְהוָה֙ וַיִּשְׁכֹּ֤ן עַל־ הַ֣ר סִינַ֔י שֵׁ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֑ים הֶעָנָ֖ן וַיְכַסֵּ֥הוּ הַשְּׁבִיעִ֖י בַּיּ֥וֹם וַיִּקְרָ֧א אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֛ה מִתּ֥וֹךְ הֶעָנָֽן׃ kə·ḇō·wḏ- Yah·weh way·yiš·kōn ‘al- har sî·nay šê·šeṯ yā·mîm he·‘ā·nān way·ḵas·sê·hū haš·šə·ḇî·‘î bay·yō·wm way·yiq·rā ’el- mō·šeh mit·tō·wḵ he·‘ā·nān — WLC · 16

And the sight of the glory of the LORD was like a consuming fire on the mountaintop… in the eyes vvv of the Israelites.

וּמַרְאֵה֙ כְּב֣וֹד יְהוָ֔ה אֹכֶ֖לֶת כְּאֵ֥שׁ בְּרֹ֣אשׁ הָהָ֑ר לְעֵינֵ֖י בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ ū·mar·’êh kə·ḇō·wḏ Yah·weh ’ō·ḵe·leṯ kə·’êš bə·rōš hā·hār lə·‘ê·nê bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 17

Moses entered… the cloud as he went up on the mountain, and he remained on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

מֹשֶׁ֛ה וַיָּבֹ֥א בְּת֥וֹךְ הֶעָנָ֖ן וַיַּ֣עַל אֶל־ הָהָ֑ר מֹשֶׁה֙ וַיְהִ֤י בָּהָ֔ר אַרְבָּעִ֣ים י֔וֹם וְאַרְבָּעִ֖ים לָֽיְלָה׃פ mō·šeh way·yā·ḇō bə·ṯō·wḵ he·‘ā·nān way·ya·‘al ’el- hā·hār mō·šeh way·hî bā·hār ’ar·bā·‘îm yō·wm wə·’ar·bā·‘îm lā·yə·lāh — WLC · 18
