Chapter 23

Justice and Mercy

[“]You shall not spread a false report. Do not join… the wicked by being a malicious witness.

𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤔𐤀 𐤔𐤅𐤀 𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤔𐤕 𐤉𐤃𐤊 𐤏𐤌 𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤕 𐤇𐤌𐤎𐤎 𐤏𐤃

לֹ֥א תִשָּׂ֖א שָׁ֑וְא שֵׁ֣מַע אַל־ תָּ֤שֶׁת יָֽדְךָ֙ עִם־ רָשָׁ֔ע לִהְיֹ֖ת חָמָֽס׃ס עֵ֥ד lō ṯiś·śā šāw šê·ma‘ ’al- tā·šeṯ yā·ḏə·ḵā ‘im- rā·šā‘ lih·yōṯ ḥā·mās ‘êḏWLC · 1

You shall not follow… the crowd in wrongdoing. When you testify in a lawsuit, do not pervert justice by siding with the crowd.

לֹֽא־ תִהְיֶ֥ה אַחֲרֵֽי־ רַבִּ֖ים לְרָעֹ֑ת תַעֲנֶ֣ה עַל־ רִ֗ב וְלֹא־ לְהַטֹּֽת׃ לִנְטֹ֛ת אַחֲרֵ֥י רַבִּ֖ים lō- ṯih·yeh ’a·ḥă·rê- rab·bîm lə·rā·‘ōṯ ṯa·‘ă·neh ‘al- riḇ wə·lō- lə·haṭ·ṭōṯ lin·ṭōṯ ’a·ḥă·rê rab·bîmWLC · 2

And do not show favoritism to a poor man in his lawsuit.

לֹ֥א תֶהְדַּ֖ר וְדָ֕ל בְּרִיבֽוֹ׃ס lō ṯeh·dar wə·ḏāl bə·rî·ḇōwWLC · 3

If you encounter your enemy’s stray ox or donkey, you must return it… to him.

𐤊𐤉 𐤕𐤐𐤂𐤏 𐤀𐤉𐤁𐤊 𐤕𐤏𐤄 𐤔𐤅𐤓 𐤀𐤅 𐤇𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤄𐤔𐤁 𐤕𐤔𐤉𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤅𐤎

כִּ֣י תִפְגַּ֞ע אֹֽיִבְךָ֛ תֹּעֶ֑ה שׁ֧וֹר א֥וֹ חֲמֹר֖וֹ הָשֵׁ֥ב תְּשִׁיבֶ֖נּוּ לֽוֹ׃ס kî ṯip̄·ga‘ ’ō·yiḇ·ḵā tō·‘eh šō·wr ’ōw ḥă·mō·rōw hā·šêḇ tə·šî·ḇen·nū lōwWLC · 4

If you see the donkey of one who hates you fallen under its load, do not leave it there; you must help him… with it.

כִּֽי־ תִרְאֶ֞ה חֲמ֣וֹר שֹׂנַאֲךָ֗ רֹבֵץ֙ תַּ֣חַת מַשָּׂא֔וֹ וְחָדַלְתָּ֖ מֵעֲזֹ֣ב ל֑וֹ עָזֹ֥ב תַּעֲזֹ֖ב עִמּֽוֹ׃ס kî- ṯir·’eh ḥă·mō·wr śō·na·’ă·ḵā rō·ḇêṣ ta·ḥaṯ maś·śā·’ōw wə·ḥā·ḏal·tā mê·‘ă·zōḇ lōw ‘ā·zōḇ ta·‘ă·zōḇ ‘im·mōwWLC · 5

You shall not deny justice to the poor in their lawsuits.

לֹ֥א תַטֶּ֛ה מִשְׁפַּ֥ט אֶבְיֹנְךָ֖ בְּרִיבֽוֹ׃ lō ṯaṭ·ṭeh miš·paṭ ’eḇ·yō·nə·ḵā bə·rî·ḇōwWLC · 6

Stay far away from a false accusation. Do not kill the innocent or the just, for I will not acquit the guilty.

𐤕𐤓𐤇𐤒 𐤔𐤒𐤓 𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤄𐤓𐤂 𐤅𐤍𐤒𐤉 𐤅𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤊𐤉 𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤑𐤃𐤉𐤒 𐤓𐤔𐤏

תִּרְחָ֑ק שֶׁ֖קֶר מִדְּבַר־ אַֽל־ תַּהֲרֹ֔ג וְנָקִ֤י וְצַדִּיק֙ כִּ֥י לֹא־ אַצְדִּ֖יק רָשָֽׁע׃ tir·ḥāq še·qer mid·də·ḇar- ’al- ta·hă·rōḡ wə·nā·qî wə·ṣad·dîq kî lō- ’aṣ·dîq rā·šā‘WLC · 7

Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds those who see and twists the words of the righteous.

לֹ֣א תִקָּ֑ח וְשֹׁ֖חַד כִּ֤י הַשֹּׁ֙חַד֙ יְעַוֵּ֣ר פִּקְחִ֔ים וִֽיסַלֵּ֖ף דִּבְרֵ֥י צַדִּיקִֽים׃ lō ṯiq·qāḥ wə·šō·ḥaḏ kî haš·šō·ḥaḏ yə·‘aw·wêr piq·ḥîm wî·sal·lêp̄ diḇ·rê ṣad·dî·qîmWLC · 8

Do not oppress a foreign resident, since you yourselves know - how it feels to be foreigners; for you were foreigners in the land of Egypt.

לֹ֣א תִלְחָ֑ץ וְגֵ֖ר וְאַתֶּ֗ם יְדַעְתֶּם֙ אֶת־ נֶ֣פֶשׁ הַגֵּ֔ר כִּֽי־ הֱיִיתֶ֖ם גֵרִ֥ים בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ lō ṯil·ḥāṣ wə·ḡêr wə·’at·tem yə·ḏa‘·tem ’eṯ- ne·p̄eš hag·gêr kî- hĕ·yî·ṯem ḡê·rîm bə·’e·reṣ miṣ·rā·yimWLC · 9

Sabbath Laws

For six years you are to sow your land and gather its produce,

𐤅𐤔𐤔 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤆𐤓𐤏 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤎𐤐𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤕𐤁𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄

וְשֵׁ֥שׁ שָׁנִ֖ים תִּזְרַ֣ע אֶת־ אַרְצֶ֑ךָ וְאָסַפְתָּ֖ אֶת־ תְּבוּאָתָֽהּ׃ wə·šêš šā·nîm tiz·ra‘ ’eṯ- ’ar·ṣe·ḵā wə·’ā·sap̄·tā ’eṯ- tə·ḇū·’ā·ṯāhWLC · 10

but in the seventh [year] you must let it rest and lie fallow, so that the poor among your people may eat from the field and the wild animals may consume what they leave. Do the same with your vineyard and olive grove.

וְהַשְּׁבִיעִ֞ת תִּשְׁמְטֶ֣נָּה וּנְטַשְׁתָּ֗הּ אֶבְיֹנֵ֣י עַמֶּ֔ךָ וְאָֽכְלוּ֙ הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה חַיַּ֣ת תֹּאכַ֖ל וְיִתְרָ֕ם תַּעֲשֶׂ֥ה כֵּֽן־ לְכַרְמְךָ֖ לְזֵיתֶֽךָ׃ wə·haš·šə·ḇî·‘iṯ tiš·mə·ṭen·nāh ū·nə·ṭaš·tāh ’eḇ·yō·nê ‘am·me·ḵā wə·’ā·ḵə·lū haś·śā·ḏeh ḥay·yaṯ tō·ḵal wə·yiṯ·rām ta·‘ă·śeh kên- lə·ḵar·mə·ḵā lə·zê·ṯe·ḵāWLC · 11

For six days you are to do your work, but on the seventh day you must cease, so that your ox and your donkey may rest and the son of your maidservant may be refreshed, as well as the foreign resident.

שֵׁ֤שֶׁת יָמִים֙ תַּעֲשֶׂ֣ה מַעֲשֶׂ֔יךָ הַשְּׁבִיעִ֖י וּבַיּ֥וֹם תִּשְׁבֹּ֑ת לְמַ֣עַן שֽׁוֹרְךָ֙ וַחֲמֹרֶ֔ךָ יָנ֗וּחַ בֶּן־ אֲמָתְךָ֖ וְיִנָּפֵ֥שׁ וְהַגֵּֽר׃ šê·šeṯ yā·mîm ta·‘ă·śeh ma·‘ă·śe·ḵā haš·šə·ḇî·‘î ū·ḇay·yō·wm tiš·bōṯ lə·ma·‘an šō·wr·ḵā wa·ḥă·mō·re·ḵā yā·nū·aḥ ben- ’ă·mā·ṯə·ḵā wə·yin·nā·p̄êš wə·hag·gêrWLC · 12

Pay close attention to everything I have said to you. You must not invoke the names of other gods; they must not be heard on your lips.

תִּשָּׁמֵ֑רוּ וּבְכֹ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־ אָמַ֥רְתִּי אֲלֵיכֶ֖ם לֹ֣א תַזְכִּ֔ירוּ וְשֵׁ֨ם אֲחֵרִים֙ אֱלֹהִ֤ים לֹ֥א יִשָּׁמַ֖ע עַל־ פִּֽיךָ׃ tiš·šā·mê·rū ū·ḇə·ḵōl ’ă·šer- ’ā·mar·tî ’ă·lê·ḵem lō ṯaz·kî·rū wə·šêm ’ă·ḥê·rîm ’ĕ·lō·hîm lō yiš·šā·ma‘ ‘al- pî·ḵāWLC · 13

The Three Feasts of Pilgrimage

Three times a year you are to celebrate a feast to Me.

שָׁלֹ֣שׁ רְגָלִ֔ים בַּשָּׁנָֽה׃ תָּחֹ֥ג לִ֖י šā·lōš rə·ḡā·lîm baš·šā·nāh tā·ḥōḡ lîWLC · 14

  • You are to keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread as I commanded you: At the appointed time in the month of Abib you are to eat unleavened bread for seven days, because that [was the month] you came out of Egypt. No one may appear before Me empty-handed.

𐤀𐤕 𐤕𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤇𐤂 𐤄𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤊𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤑𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤊 𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤇𐤃𐤔 𐤄𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤁 𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤕 𐤔𐤁𐤏𐤕 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤅 𐤉𐤑𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤓𐤉𐤒𐤌

אֶת־ תִּשְׁמֹר֒ חַ֣ג הַמַּצּוֹת֮ כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר צִוִּיתִ֗ךָ לְמוֹעֵד֙ חֹ֣דֶשׁ הָֽאָבִ֔יב תֹּאכַ֨ל מַצּ֜וֹת שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִים֩ כִּי־ ב֖וֹ יָצָ֣אתָ מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם וְלֹא־ יֵרָא֥וּ פָנַ֖י רֵיקָֽם׃ ’eṯ- tiš·mōr ḥaḡ ham·maṣ·ṣō·wṯ ka·’ă·šer ṣiw·wî·ṯi·ḵā lə·mō·w·‘êḏ ḥō·ḏeš hā·’ā·ḇîḇ tō·ḵal maṣ·ṣō·wṯ šiḇ·‘aṯ yā·mîm kî- ḇōw yā·ṣā·ṯā mim·miṣ·rā·yim wə·lō- yê·rā·’ū p̄ā·nay rê·qāmWLC · 15

[You are also to keep] the Feast of Harvest with the firstfruits of the produce from what you sow in the field. And [keep] the Feast of Ingathering at the end of the year, when you gather your produce from the field.

וְחַ֤ג הַקָּצִיר֙ בִּכּוּרֵ֣י מַעֲשֶׂ֔יךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר תִּזְרַ֖ע בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה וְחַ֤ג הָֽאָסִף֙ בְּצֵ֣את הַשָּׁנָ֔ה בְּאָסְפְּךָ֥ אֶֽת־ מַעֲשֶׂ֖יךָ מִן־ הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ wə·ḥaḡ haq·qā·ṣîr bik·kū·rê ma·‘ă·śe·ḵā ’ă·šer tiz·ra‘ baś·śā·ḏeh wə·ḥaḡ hā·’ā·sip̄ bə·ṣêṯ haš·šā·nāh bə·’ā·sə·pə·ḵā ’eṯ- ma·‘ă·śe·ḵā min- haś·śā·ḏehWLC · 16

Three times a year all your males are to appear before… the Lord GOD.

שָׁלֹ֥שׁ פְּעָמִ֖ים בַּשָּׁנָ֑ה כָּל־ זְכ֣וּרְךָ֔ יֵרָאֶה֙ אֶל־ פְּנֵ֖י הָאָדֹ֥ן׀ יְהוָֽה׃ šā·lōš pə·‘ā·mîm baš·šā·nāh kāl- zə·ḵū·rə·ḵā yê·rā·’eh ’el- pə·nê hā·’ā·ḏōn Yah·wehWLC · 17

You must not offer the blood of My sacrifices with anything leavened, nor may the fat of My feast remain until morning.

לֹֽא־ תִזְבַּ֥ח דַּם־ זִבְחִ֑י עַל־ חָמֵ֖ץ וְלֹֽא־ חֵֽלֶב־ חַגִּ֖י יָלִ֥ין עַד־ בֹּֽקֶר׃ lō- ṯiz·baḥ dam- ziḇ·ḥî ‘al- ḥā·mêṣ wə·lō- ḥê·leḇ- ḥag·gî yā·lîn ‘aḏ- bō·qerWLC · 18

Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the LORD your God. You must not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.

תָּבִ֕יא רֵאשִׁ֗ית בִּכּוּרֵי֙ אַדְמָ֣תְךָ֔ בֵּ֖ית יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ לֹֽא־ תְבַשֵּׁ֥ל גְּדִ֖י אִמּֽוֹ׃ס בַּחֲלֵ֥ב tā·ḇî rê·šîṯ bik·kū·rê ’aḏ·mā·ṯə·ḵā bêṯ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā lō- ṯə·ḇaš·šêl gə·ḏî ’im·mōw ba·ḥă·lêḇWLC · 19

God’s Angel to Lead

Behold, I am sending an angel before you to protect you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared.

הִנֵּ֨ה אָנֹכִ֜י שֹׁלֵ֤חַ מַלְאָךְ֙ לְפָנֶ֔יךָ לִשְׁמָרְךָ֖ בַּדָּ֑רֶךְ וְלַהֲבִ֣יאֲךָ֔ אֶל־ הַמָּק֖וֹם אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֲכִנֹֽתִי׃ hin·nêh ’ā·nō·ḵî šō·lê·aḥ mal·’āḵ lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā liš·mā·rə·ḵā bad·dā·reḵ wə·la·hă·ḇî·’ă·ḵā ’el- ham·mā·qō·wm ’ă·šer hă·ḵi·nō·ṯîWLC · 20

Pay attention to him and listen to his voice; do not defy him, for he will not forgive rebellion, since My Name is in him.

הִשָּׁ֧מֶר מִפָּנָ֛יו וּשְׁמַ֥ע בְּקֹל֖וֹ אַל־ תַּמֵּ֣ר בּ֑וֹ כִּ֣י לֹ֤א יִשָּׂא֙ לְפִשְׁעֲכֶ֔ם כִּ֥י שְׁמִ֖י בְּקִרְבּֽוֹ׃ hiš·šā·mer mip·pā·nāw ū·šə·ma‘ bə·qō·lōw ’al- tam·mêr bōw kî lō yiś·śā lə·p̄iš·‘ă·ḵem kî šə·mî bə·qir·bōwWLC · 21

But if you will listen carefully… to his voice and do everything I say, I will be an enemy to your enemies and a foe to your foes.

כִּ֣י אִם־ שָׁמֹ֤עַ תִּשְׁמַע֙ בְּקֹל֔וֹ וְעָשִׂ֕יתָ כֹּ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֲדַבֵּ֑ר אֹ֣יְבֶ֔יךָ וְאָֽיַבְתִּי֙ אֶת־ וְצַרְתִּ֖י אֶת־ צֹרְרֶֽיךָ׃ kî ’im- šā·mō·a‘ tiš·ma‘ bə·qō·lōw wə·‘ā·śî·ṯā kōl ’ă·šer ’ă·ḏab·bêr ’ō·yə·ḇe·ḵā wə·’ā·yaḇ·tî ’eṯ- wə·ṣar·tî ’eṯ- ṣō·rə·re·ḵāWLC · 22

For My angel will go before you and bring you into the land of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites, and Jebusites, and I will annihilate them.

כִּֽי־ מַלְאָכִי֮ יֵלֵ֣ךְ לְפָנֶיךָ֒ וֶהֱבִֽיאֲךָ֗ אֶל־ הָֽאֱמֹרִי֙ וְהַ֣חִתִּ֔י וְהַפְּרִזִּי֙ וְהַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י הַחִוִּ֖י וְהַיְבוּסִ֑י וְהִכְחַדְתִּֽיו׃ kî- mal·’ā·ḵî yê·lêḵ lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā we·hĕ·ḇî·’ă·ḵā ’el- hā·’ĕ·mō·rî wə·ha·ḥit·tî wə·hap·pə·riz·zî wə·hak·kə·na·‘ă·nî ha·ḥiw·wî wə·hay·ḇū·sî wə·hiḵ·ḥaḏ·tîwWLC · 23

You must not bow down to their gods or serve them… or follow their practices. Instead, you are to demolish them… and smash their sacred stones to pieces…

לֹֽא־ תִשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֤ה לֵאלֹֽהֵיהֶם֙ תָֽעָבְדֵ֔ם וְלֹ֥א וְלֹ֣א תַעֲשֶׂ֖ה כְּמַֽעֲשֵׂיהֶ֑ם כִּ֤י הָרֵס֙ תְּהָ֣רְסֵ֔ם מַצֵּבֹתֵיהֶֽם׃ וְשַׁבֵּ֥ר תְּשַׁבֵּ֖ר lō- ṯiš·ta·ḥă·weh lê·lō·hê·hem ṯā·‘ā·ḇə·ḏêm wə·lō wə·lō ṯa·‘ă·śeh kə·ma·‘ă·śê·hem kî hā·rês tə·hā·rə·sêm maṣ·ṣê·ḇō·ṯê·hem wə·šab·bêr tə·šab·bêrWLC · 24

So you shall serve the LORD your God, and He will bless your bread and your water. And I will take away sickness from among you.

וַעֲבַדְתֶּ֗ם אֵ֚ת יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם וּבֵרַ֥ךְ אֶֽת־ לַחְמְךָ֖ וְאֶת־ מֵימֶ֑יךָ וַהֲסִרֹתִ֥י מַחֲלָ֖ה מִקִּרְבֶּֽךָ׃ wa·‘ă·ḇaḏ·tem ’êṯ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem ū·ḇê·raḵ ’eṯ- laḥ·mə·ḵā wə·’eṯ- mê·me·ḵā wa·hă·si·rō·ṯî ma·ḥă·lāh miq·qir·be·ḵāWLC · 25

No {woman} in your land… will miscarry or be barren -; I will fulfill the number of your days.

לֹ֥א בְּאַרְצֶ֑ךָ תִהְיֶ֛ה מְשַׁכֵּלָ֥ה וַעֲקָרָ֖ה אֶת־ אֲמַלֵּֽא׃ מִסְפַּ֥ר יָמֶ֖יךָ lō bə·’ar·ṣe·ḵā ṯih·yeh mə·šak·kê·lāh wa·‘ă·qā·rāh ’eṯ- ’ă·mal·lê mis·par yā·me·ḵāWLC · 26

  • I will send My terror ahead of you and throw into confusion every nation you encounter I will make all your enemies turn and run…

אֶת־ אֲשַׁלַּ֣ח אֵֽימָתִי֙ לְפָנֶ֔יךָ וְהַמֹּתִי֙ אֶת־ כָּל־ הָעָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר תָּבֹ֖א בָּהֶ֑ם כָּל־ אֹיְבֶ֛יךָ וְנָתַתִּ֧י אֶת־ אֵלֶ֖יךָ עֹֽרֶף׃ ’eṯ- ’ă·šal·laḥ ’ê·mā·ṯî lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā wə·ham·mō·ṯî ’eṯ- kāl- hā·‘ām ’ă·šer tā·ḇō bā·hem kāl- ’ō·yə·ḇe·ḵā wə·nā·ṯat·tî ’eṯ- ’ê·le·ḵā ‘ō·rep̄WLC · 27

I will send the hornet before you to drive the Hivites and Canaanites and Hittites out of your way.

וְשָׁלַחְתִּ֥י אֶת־ הַצִּרְעָ֖ה לְפָנֶ֑יךָ וְגֵרְשָׁ֗ה אֶת־ הַחִוִּ֧י אֶת־ הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֛י וְאֶת־ הַחִתִּ֖י מִלְּפָנֶֽיךָ׃ wə·šā·laḥ·tî ’eṯ- haṣ·ṣir·‘āh lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā wə·ḡê·rə·šāh ’eṯ- ha·ḥiw·wî ’eṯ- hak·kə·na·‘ă·nî wə·’eṯ- ha·ḥit·tî mil·lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵāWLC · 28

I will not drive them out before you in a single year; otherwise the land would become desolate and wild animals would multiply against you.

לֹ֧א אֲגָרְשֶׁ֛נּוּ מִפָּנֶ֖יךָ אֶחָ֑ת בְּשָׁנָ֣ה פֶּן־ הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ תִּהְיֶ֤ה שְׁמָמָ֔ה הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ חַיַּ֥ת וְרַבָּ֥ה עָלֶ֖יךָ lō ’ă·ḡā·rə·šen·nū mip·pā·ne·ḵā ’e·ḥāṯ bə·šā·nāh pen- hā·’ā·reṣ tih·yeh šə·mā·māh haś·śā·ḏeh ḥay·yaṯ wə·rab·bāh ‘ā·le·ḵāWLC · 29

Little by little I will drive them out ahead of you, until you become fruitful and possess the land.

מְעַ֥ט מְעַ֛ט אֲגָרְשֶׁ֖נּוּ מִפָּנֶ֑יךָ עַ֚ד אֲשֶׁ֣ר תִּפְרֶ֔ה וְנָחַלְתָּ֖ אֶת־ הָאָֽרֶץ׃ mə·‘aṭ mə·‘aṭ ’ă·ḡā·rə·šen·nū mip·pā·ne·ḵā ‘aḏ ’ă·šer tip̄·reh wə·nā·ḥal·tā ’eṯ- hā·’ā·reṣWLC · 30

And I will establish your borders from the Red Sea to the Sea of the Philistines, and from the desert to the [Euphrates]. For I will deliver the inhabitants… into your hand, and you will drive them out before you.

וְשַׁתִּ֣י אֶת־ גְּבֻלְךָ֗ סוּף֙ מִיַּם־ וְעַד־ יָ֣ם פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וּמִמִּדְבָּ֖ר עַד־ הַנָּהָ֑ר כִּ֣י׀ אֶתֵּ֣ן יֹשְׁבֵ֣י הָאָ֔רֶץ בְּיֶדְכֶ֗ם אֵ֚ת וְגֵרַשְׁתָּ֖מוֹ מִפָּנֶֽיךָ׃ wə·šat·tî ’eṯ- gə·ḇul·ḵā sūp̄ mî·yam- wə·‘aḏ- yām pə·liš·tîm ū·mim·miḏ·bār ‘aḏ- han·nā·hār kî ’et·tên yō·šə·ḇê hā·’ā·reṣ bə·yeḏ·ḵem ’êṯ wə·ḡê·raš·tā·mōw mip·pā·ne·ḵāWLC · 31

You shall make no covenant with them or with their gods.

תִכְרֹ֥ת לֹֽא־ בְּרִֽית׃ לָהֶ֛ם וְלֵאלֹֽהֵיהֶ֖ם ṯiḵ·rōṯ lō- bə·rîṯ lā·hem wə·lê·lō·hê·hemWLC · 32

They must not remain in your land, lest they cause you to sin against Me. For if you serve their gods, it will surely be a snare to you.”
