The Ten Commandments
1
And God spoke all these… words:

אֱלֹהִ֔ים אֵ֛ת וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר כָּל־ הָאֵ֖לֶּה לֵאמֹֽר׃ס הַדְּבָרִ֥ים ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’êṯ way·ḏab·bêr kāl- hā·’êl·leh lê·mōr had·də·ḇā·rîm — WLC · 1

“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

אָֽנֹכִ֖י֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑֔יךָ אֲשֶׁ֧ר הוֹצֵאתִ֛יךָ מֵאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרַ֖יִם מִבֵּ֣֥ית עֲבָדִיֽ֑ם׃ ’ā·nō·ḵî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā ’ă·šer hō·w·ṣê·ṯî·ḵā mê·’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim mib·bêṯ ʿă·ḇå̄·ḏīm — WLC · 2

You shall have no other gods before Me.

לְךָ֛֩ יִהְיֶֽה־ לֹֽ֣א אֲחֵרִ֖֜ים אֱלֹהִ֥֨ים עַל־ פָּנָֽ֗יַ׃ lə·ḵå̄ yih·yeh- lō ’ă·ḥê·rîm ’ĕ·lō·hîm ‘al- på̄·nå̄·ya — WLC · 3

{You shall} not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in the heavens above, on the earth below, or in the waters beneath…

לֹֽ֣א תַֽעֲשֶׂ֨ה־ לְךָ֥֣ פֶ֣֙סֶל֙׀ וְכָל־ תְּמוּנָ֡֔ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר֣ בַּשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙׀ מִמַּ֡֔עַל וַֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר֩ בָּאָ֖֨רֶץ מִתַָּ֑֜חַת וַאֲשֶׁ֥֣ר בַּמַּ֖֣יִם׀ מִתַּ֥֣חַת לָאָֽ֗רֶץ׃ lō ṯa·‘ă·śeh- lə·ḵā p̄ɛ·sɛl wə·ḵāl tə·mū·nāh ʾă·šɛr baš·šå̄·ma·yim mim·ma·‘al wa·’ă·šer bā·’ā·reṣ mit·tå̄·ḥaṯ wa·’ă·šer bam·ma·yim mit·ta·ḥaṯ lå̄·ʾå̄·rɛṣ — WLC · 4

You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on [their] children to the third… and fourth [generations] of those who hate Me,

לֹֽא־ תִשְׁתַּחְוֶ֥֣ה לָהֶ֖ם֮ וְלֹ֣א תָעָבְדֵ֑ם֒ כִּ֣י אָֽנֹכִ֞י יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ קַנָּ֔א אֵ֣ל פֹּ֠קֵד עֲוֺ֨ן אָבֹ֧ת עַל־ בָּנִ֛ים עַל־ שִׁלֵּשִׁ֥ים וְעַל־ רִבֵּעִ֖ים לְשֹׂנְאָֽ֑י׃ lō- ṯiš·taḥ·wɛh lā·hem wə·lō ṯā·‘ā·ḇə·ḏêm kî ’ā·nō·ḵî Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā qan·nā ’êl pō·qêḏ ‘ă·wōn ’ā·ḇōṯ ‘al- bā·nîm ‘al- šil·lê·šîm wə·‘al- rib·bê·‘îm lə·śō·nə·ʾå̄y — WLC · 5

but showing loving devotion to a thousand [generations] of those who love Me and keep My commandments.
𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤇𐤎𐤃 𐤋𐤀𐤋𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤄𐤁𐤉 𐤅𐤋𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤉 𐤌𐤑𐤅𐤕𐤉𐤎
וְעֹ֥֤שֶׂה חֶ֖֙סֶד֙ לַאֲלָפִ֑֔ים לְאֹהֲבַ֖י וּלְשֹׁמְרֵ֥י מִצְוֺתָֽי׃ס wə·‘ō·śeh ḥe·seḏ la·’ă·lā·p̄îm lə·’ō·hă·ḇay ū·lə·šō·mə·rê miṣ·wō·ṯāy — WLC · 6

You {shall} not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave anyone unpunished who takes His name in vain.

לֹ֥א תִשָּׂ֛א אֶת־ שֵֽׁם־ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ לַשָּׁ֑וְא כִּ֣י יְהוָ֔ה אֵ֛ת לֹ֤א יְנַקֶּה֙ אֲשֶׁר־ יִשָּׂ֥א אֶת־ שְׁמ֖וֹ לַשָּֽׁוְא׃פ lō ṯiś·śā ’eṯ- šêm- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā laš·šāw kî Yah·weh ’êṯ lō yə·naq·qeh ’ă·šer- yiś·śā ’eṯ- šə·mōw laš·šāw — WLC · 7

Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

זָכ֛וֹר֩ אֶת־ הַשַּׁבָּ֖֜ת י֥֨וֹם לְקַדְּשֽׁ֗וֹ׃ zā·ḵō·wr ’eṯ- haš·šab·bāṯ yō·wm lə·qad·də·šō — WLC · 8

Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
𐤔𐤔𐤕 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤏𐤁𐤃 𐤅𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤕𐤊
שֵׁ֤֣שֶׁת יָמִ֣ים֙ תַּֽעֲבֹ֔ד֮ וְעָשִׂ֖֣יתָ כָּל־ מְלַאכְתֶּֽךָ֒׃ šê·šeṯ yā·mîm ta·ʿă·ḇōḏ wə·‘ā·śî·ṯā kāl- mə·laḵ·tɛ·ḵå̄ — WLC · 9

but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God, on which you must not do any work— neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant or livestock, nor the foreigner within your gates.

הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔֜י וְי֙וֹם֙ שַׁבָּ֖֣ת׀ לַיהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑֗יךָ לֹֽ֣א־ תַעֲשֶׂ֣֨ה כָל־ מְלָאכָ֡֜ה אַתָּ֣ה׀ וּבִנְךָֽ֣־ וּ֠בִתֶּ֗ךָ עַבְדְּךָ֤֨ וַאֲמָֽתְךָ֜֙ וּבְהֶמְתֶּ֔֗ךָ וְגֵרְךָ֖֙ אֲשֶׁ֥֣ר בִּשְׁעָרֶֽ֔יךָ׃ haš·šə·ḇî·‘î wə·yō·wm šab·bāṯ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā lō- ṯa·‘ă·śeh ḵāl mə·lā·ḵāh ’at·tāh ū·ḇin·ḵå̄- ū·ḇit·te·ḵā ‘aḇ·də·ḵā wa·’ă·mā·ṯə·ḵā ū·ḇə·hem·te·ḵā wə·ḡê·rə·ḵā ’ă·šer biš·ʿå̄·rɛ·ḵå̄ — WLC · 10

For [in] six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that [is] in them, but on the seventh day He rested. Therefore… the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.
𐤊𐤉 𐤔𐤔𐤕 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤌 𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤉𐤏𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤇 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤍 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤓𐤊 𐤄𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤃𐤔𐤄𐤅𐤎
כִּ֣י שֵֽׁשֶׁת־ יָמִים֩ יְהוָ֜ה אֶת־ עָשָׂ֨ה הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם וְאֶת־ הָאָ֗רֶץ אֶת־ הַיָּם֙ וְאֶת־ כָּל־ אֲשֶׁר־ בָּ֔ם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֑י בַּיּ֣וֹם וַיָּ֖נַח עַל־ כֵּ֗ן יְהוָ֛ה אֶת־ בֵּרַ֧ךְ הַשַּׁבָּ֖ת י֥וֹם וַֽיְקַדְּשֵֽׁהוּ׃ס kî šê·šeṯ- yā·mîm Yah·weh ’eṯ- ‘ā·śāh haš·šā·ma·yim wə·’eṯ- hā·’ā·reṣ ’eṯ- hay·yām wə·’eṯ- kāl- ’ă·šer- bām haš·šə·ḇî·‘î bay·yō·wm way·yā·naḥ ‘al- kên Yah·weh ’eṯ- bê·raḵ haš·šab·bāṯ yō·wm way·qad·də·šê·hū — WLC · 11

Honor your father and mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.

כַּבֵּ֥ד אֶת־ אָבִ֖יךָ וְאֶת־ אִמֶּ֑ךָ לְמַ֙עַן֙ יָמֶ֔יךָ יַאֲרִכ֣וּן עַ֚ל הָאֲדָמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לָֽךְ׃ס kab·bêḏ ’eṯ- ’ā·ḇî·ḵā wə·’eṯ- ’im·me·ḵā lə·ma·‘an yā·me·ḵā ya·’ă·ri·ḵūn ‘al hā·’ă·ḏā·māh ’ă·šer- Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā nō·ṯên lāḵ — WLC · 12

You shall not murder.

You shall not commit adultery.

You shall not steal.

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

לֹֽא־ תַעֲנֶ֥ה שָֽׁקֶר׃ס עֵ֥ד בְרֵעֲךָ֖ lō- ṯa·‘ă·neh šā·qer ‘êḏ ḇə·rê·‘ă·ḵā — WLC · 16

You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, or his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

Moses Comforts the People

When all the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the sounding of the ram’s horn, and the mountain enveloped in smoke, - they trembled and stood at a distance.

וְכָל־ הָעָם֩ רֹאִ֨ים אֶת־ הַקּוֹלֹ֜ת וְאֶת־ הַלַּפִּידִ֗ם וְאֵת֙ ק֣וֹל הַשֹּׁפָ֔ר וְאֶת־ הָהָ֖ר עָשֵׁ֑ן הָעָם֙ וַיַּ֤רְא וַיָּנֻ֔עוּ וַיַּֽעַמְד֖וּ מֵֽרָחֹֽק׃ wə·ḵāl hā·‘ām rō·’îm ’eṯ- haq·qō·w·lōṯ wə·’eṯ- hal·lap·pî·ḏim wə·’êṯ qō·wl haš·šō·p̄ār wə·’eṯ- hā·hār ‘ā·šên hā·‘ām way·yar way·yā·nu·‘ū way·ya·‘am·ḏū mê·rā·ḥōq — WLC · 18

“Speak to us yourself and we will listen,” they said to Moses. “But do not let God speak to us, or we will die.”

דַּבֵּר־ עִמָּ֖נוּ אַתָּ֥ה וְנִשְׁמָ֑עָה וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֔ה וְאַל־ אֱלֹהִ֖ים יְדַבֵּ֥ר עִמָּ֛נוּ פֶּן־ נָמֽוּת׃ dab·bêr- ‘im·mā·nū ’at·tāh wə·niš·mā·‘āh way·yō·mə·rū ’el- mō·šeh wə·’al- ’ĕ·lō·hîm yə·ḏab·bêr ‘im·mā·nū pen- nā·mūṯ — WLC · 19

“Do not be afraid,” Moses replied -. “For God has come to test you, so that… the fear of Him may be before you, to keep you from sinning.”

אַל־ תִּירָאוּ֒ מֹשֶׁ֣ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ הָעָם֮ כִּ֗י הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים בָּ֖א לְבַֽעֲבוּר֙ נַסּ֣וֹת אֶתְכֶ֔ם וּבַעֲב֗וּר תִּהְיֶ֧ה יִרְאָת֛וֹ עַל־ פְּנֵיכֶ֖ם לְבִלְתִּ֥י תֶחֱטָֽאוּ׃ ’al- tî·rā·’ū mō·šeh way·yō·mer ’el- hā·‘ām kî hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm bā lə·ḇa·‘ă·ḇūr nas·sō·wṯ ’eṯ·ḵem ū·ḇa·‘ă·ḇūr tih·yeh yir·’ā·ṯōw ‘al- pə·nê·ḵem lə·ḇil·tî ṯe·ḥĕ·ṭā·’ū — WLC · 20

And the people stood at a distance as Moses approached… the thick darkness where… God was.

הָעָ֖ם וַיַּעֲמֹ֥ד מֵרָחֹ֑ק וּמֹשֶׁה֙ נִגַּ֣שׁ אֶל־ הָֽעֲרָפֶ֔ל אֲשֶׁר־ שָׁ֖ם הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃פ hā·‘ām way·ya·‘ă·mōḏ mê·rā·ḥōq ū·mō·šeh nig·gaš ’el- hā·‘ă·rā·p̄el ’ă·šer- šām hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm — WLC · 21
Idolatry Forbidden

Then the LORD said to Moses, “This is what you are to tell… the Israelites…: ‘You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven.

You are to make for Me an altar of earth, and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and peace offerings, your sheep and goats and cattle. In every place where I cause My name to be remembered, I will come to you and bless you.

Now if you make an altar of stones for Me, you must not build it with stones shaped by tools; for if you use a chisel on it, you will defile it.

And you must not go up to My altar on steps, lest your nakedness be exposed on it.’
