Chapter 14

Pharaoh Pursues the Israelites

1

Then the LORD said to Moses…,

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓

יְהֹוָ֖ה וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃ Yah·weh way·ḏab·bêr ’el- mō·šeh lê·mōrWLC · 1

“Tell the Israelites… to turn back and encamp before vvv Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol… and the sea. You are to encamp by the sea, directly opposite vvv Baal-zephon…

𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤐𐤉 𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤓𐤕 𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤌𐤂𐤃𐤋 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤏𐤋 𐤑𐤐𐤍 𐤍𐤊𐤇𐤅

דַּבֵּר֮ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ אֶל־ וְיָשֻׁ֗בוּ וְיַחֲנוּ֙ לִפְנֵי֙ פִּ֣י הַחִירֹ֔ת בֵּ֥ין מִגְדֹּ֖ל וּבֵ֣ין הַיָּ֑ם תַחֲנ֖וּ עַל־ הַיָּֽם׃ לִפְנֵי֙ בַּ֣עַל צְפֹ֔ן נִכְח֥וֹ dab·bêr bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl ’el- wə·yā·šu·ḇū wə·ya·ḥă·nū lip̄·nê pî ha·ḥî·rōṯ bên miḡ·dōl ū·ḇên hay·yām ṯa·ḥă·nū ‘al- hay·yām lip̄·nê ba·‘al ṣə·p̄ōn niḵ·ḥōwWLC · 2

For Pharaoh will say vvv of the Israelites, ‘They are wandering the land in confusion; the wilderness has boxed them in.’

𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤍𐤁𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤎𐤂𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌

פַּרְעֹה֙ וְאָמַ֤ר לִבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הֵ֖ם בָּאָ֑רֶץ נְבֻכִ֥ים הַמִּדְבָּֽר׃ סָגַ֥ר עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם par·‘ōh wə·’ā·mar liḇ·nê yiś·rā·’êl hêm bā·’ā·reṣ nə·ḇu·ḵîm ham·miḏ·bār sā·ḡar ‘ă·lê·hemWLC · 3

And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart so that he will pursue them. But I will gain honor by means of Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD.” So this is what the Israelites did.

𐤅𐤇𐤆𐤒𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤋𐤁 𐤅𐤓𐤃𐤐 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤊𐤁𐤃𐤄 𐤁𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤇𐤉𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤊𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤅

וְחִזַּקְתִּ֣י אֶת־ פַּרְעֹה֮ לֵב־ וְרָדַ֣ף אַחֲרֵיהֶם֒ וְאִכָּבְדָ֤ה בְּפַרְעֹה֙ וּבְכָל־ חֵיל֔וֹ מִצְרַ֖יִם וְיָדְע֥וּ כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֑ה כֵֽן׃ וַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־ wə·ḥiz·zaq·tî ’eṯ- par·‘ōh lêḇ- wə·rā·ḏap̄ ’a·ḥă·rê·hem wə·’ik·kā·ḇə·ḏāh bə·p̄ar·‘ōh ū·ḇə·ḵāl ḥê·lōw miṣ·ra·yim wə·yā·ḏə·‘ū kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh ḵên way·ya·‘ă·śū-WLC · 4

When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds about [them] and said, “What… have we done?… We have released Israel from serving us.”

𐤋𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤃 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤁𐤓𐤇 𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤐𐤊 𐤋𐤁𐤁 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤌𐤄 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤍𐤅

לְמֶ֣לֶךְ מִצְרַ֔יִם וַיֻּגַּד֙ כִּ֥י הָעָ֑ם בָרַ֖ח פַּרְעֹ֤ה וַעֲבָדָיו֙ וַ֠יֵּהָפֵךְ לְבַ֨ב אֶל־ הָעָ֔ם וַיֹּֽאמרוּ֙ מַה־ זֹּ֣את עָשִׂ֔ינוּ כִּֽי־ שִׁלַּ֥חְנוּ אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מֵעָבְדֵֽנוּ׃ lə·me·leḵ miṣ·ra·yim way·yug·gaḏ kî hā·‘ām ḇā·raḥ par·‘ōh wa·‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw way·yê·hā·p̄êḵ lə·ḇaḇ ’el- hā·‘ām way·yō·m·rū mah- zōṯ ‘ā·śî·nū kî- šil·laḥ·nū ’eṯ- yiś·rā·’êl mê·‘ā·ḇə·ḏê·nūWLC · 5

So [Pharaoh] prepared his chariot and took his army with him.

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤎𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤓𐤊𐤁𐤅 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤒𐤇 𐤏𐤌𐤅 𐤏𐤌𐤅

וַיֶּאְסֹ֖ר אֶת־ רִכְבּ֑וֹ וְאֶת־ לָקַ֥ח עַמּ֖וֹ עִמּֽוֹ׃ way·ye’·sōr ’eṯ- riḵ·bōw wə·’eṯ- lā·qaḥ ‘am·mōw ‘im·mōwWLC · 6

He took 600… of the best chariots, and all the other chariots of Egypt, with officers over all of them.

𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤔𐤔 𐤌𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤇𐤅𐤓 𐤓𐤊𐤁 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤓𐤊𐤁 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤋𐤅

וַיִּקַּ֗ח שֵׁשׁ־ מֵא֥וֹת בָּח֔וּר רֶ֙כֶב֙ וְכֹ֖ל רֶ֣כֶב מִצְרָ֑יִם וְשָׁלִשִׁ֖ם עַל־ כֻּלּֽוֹ׃ way·yiq·qaḥ šêš- mê·’ō·wṯ bā·ḥūr re·ḵeḇ wə·ḵōl re·ḵeḇ miṣ·rā·yim wə·šā·li·šim ‘al- kul·lōwWLC · 7

And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt so that he pursued… the Israelites…, - who were marching out defiantly…

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤆𐤒 𐤋𐤁 𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤐 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤑𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤃 𐤓𐤌𐤄

יְהֹוָ֗ה אֶת־ וַיְחַזֵּ֣ק לֵ֤ב פַּרְעֹה֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ מִצְרַ֔יִם וַיִּרְדֹּ֕ף אַחֲרֵ֖י בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וּבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל יֹצְאִ֖ים בְּיָ֥ד רָמָֽה׃ Yah·weh ’eṯ- way·ḥaz·zêq lêḇ par·‘ōh me·leḵ miṣ·ra·yim way·yir·dōp̄ ’a·ḥă·rê bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl ū·ḇə·nê yiś·rā·’êl yō·ṣə·’îm bə·yāḏ rā·māhWLC · 8

The Egyptians— all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots, horsemen and troops— pursued [the Israelites] and overtook them as they camped by the sea near vvv Pi-hahiroth, opposite vvv Baal-zephon.

𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤋 𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤎𐤅𐤎 𐤓𐤊𐤁 𐤅𐤐𐤓𐤔𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤇𐤉𐤋𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤐𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤉𐤂𐤅 𐤀𐤅𐤕𐤌 𐤇𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤉 𐤄𐤇𐤉𐤓𐤕 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤁𐤏𐤋 𐤑𐤐𐤍

מִצְרַ֜יִם כָּל־ פַּרְעֹ֔ה סוּס֙ רֶ֣כֶב וּפָרָשָׁ֖יו וְחֵיל֑וֹ וַיִּרְדְּפ֨וּ אַחֲרֵיהֶ֗ם וַיַּשִּׂ֤יגוּ אוֹתָם֙ חֹנִ֣ים עַל־ הַיָּ֔ם עַל־ פִּי֙ הַֽחִירֹ֔ת לִפְנֵ֖י בַּ֥עַל צְפֹֽן׃ miṣ·ra·yim kāl- par·‘ōh sūs re·ḵeḇ ū·p̄ā·rā·šāw wə·ḥê·lōw way·yir·də·p̄ū ’a·ḥă·rê·hem way·yaś·śî·ḡū ’ō·w·ṯām ḥō·nîm ‘al- hay·yām ‘al- pî ha·ḥî·rōṯ lip̄·nê ba·‘al ṣə·p̄ōnWLC · 9

As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites… looked up… and saw the Egyptians marching after them, and [they]… were terrified… and cried out to the LORD.

𐤅𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤄𐤒𐤓𐤉𐤁 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤀𐤅 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤎𐤏 𐤀𐤇𐤓𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤏𐤒𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄

וּפַרְעֹ֖ה הִקְרִ֑יב בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֨ל אֶת־ וַיִּשְׂאוּ֩ עֵינֵיהֶ֜ם וְהִנֵּ֥ה מִצְרַ֣יִם׀ נֹסֵ֣עַ אַחֲרֵיהֶ֗ם בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וַיִּֽירְאוּ֙ מְאֹ֔ד וַיִּצְעֲק֥וּ אֶל־ יְהוָֽה׃ ū·p̄ar·‘ōh hiq·rîḇ ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl ’eṯ- way·yiś·’ū ‘ê·nê·hem wə·hin·nêh miṣ·ra·yim nō·sê·a‘ ’a·ḥă·rê·hem ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl way·yî·rə·’ū mə·’ōḏ way·yiṣ·‘ă·qū ’el- Yah·wehWLC · 10

They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us into the wilderness to die? What… have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt?

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤌𐤁𐤋𐤉 𐤒𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤒𐤇𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤌𐤄 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤄𐤅𐤑𐤉𐤀𐤍𐤅 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌

וַיֹּאמְרוּ֮ אֶל־ מֹשֶׁה֒ אֵין־ הַֽמִבְּלִ֤י קְבָרִים֙ בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם לְקַחְתָּ֖נוּ בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר לָמ֣וּת מַה־ זֹּאת֙ עָשִׂ֣יתָ לָּ֔נוּ לְהוֹצִיאָ֖נוּ מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ way·yō·mə·rū ’el- mō·šeh ’ên- ha·mib·bə·lî qə·ḇā·rîm bə·miṣ·ra·yim lə·qaḥ·tā·nū bam·miḏ·bār lā·mūṯ mah- zōṯ ‘ā·śî·ṯā lā·nū lə·hō·w·ṣî·’ā·nū mim·miṣ·rā·yimWLC · 11

{Did we} not - say to you in Egypt…, ‘Leave us alone… so that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”

𐤄𐤋𐤀 𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤁𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤇𐤃𐤋 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤍𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤁𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤌𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓

הֲלֹא־ זֶ֣ה הַדָּבָ֗ר אֲשֶׁר֩ דִּבַּ֨רְנוּ אֵלֶ֤יךָ בְמִצְרַ֙יִם֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר חֲדַ֥ל מִמֶּ֖נּוּ וְנַֽעַבְדָ֣ה אֶת־ מִצְרָ֑יִם כִּ֣י ט֥וֹב לָ֙נוּ֙ עֲבֹ֣ד אֶת־ מִצְרַ֔יִם מִמֻּתֵ֖נוּ בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ hă·lō- zeh had·dā·ḇār ’ă·šer dib·bar·nū ’ê·le·ḵā ḇə·miṣ·ra·yim lê·mōr ḥă·ḏal mim·men·nū wə·na·‘aḇ·ḏāh ’eṯ- miṣ·rā·yim kî ṭō·wḇ lā·nū ‘ă·ḇōḏ ’eṯ- miṣ·ra·yim mim·mu·ṯê·nū bam·miḏ·bārWLC · 12

But Moses told… the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the LORD’s salvation, which He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians you see today -…, you will never… see again…

𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤉𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤄𐤕𐤉𐤑𐤁𐤅 𐤅𐤓𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤔𐤅𐤏𐤕 𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤓𐤀𐤉𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤏𐤃 𐤏𐤅𐤋𐤌 𐤋𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤕𐤎𐤉𐤐𐤅 𐤏𐤅𐤃

מֹשֶׁ֣ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ הָעָם֮ אַל־ תִּירָאוּ֒ הִֽתְיַצְב֗וּ וּרְאוּ֙ אֶת־ יְהוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־ יְשׁוּעַ֣ת יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה לָכֶ֖ם הַיּ֑וֹם כִּ֗י אֲשֶׁ֨ר רְאִיתֶ֤ם אֶת־ מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ הַיּ֔וֹם לֹ֥א עַד־ עוֹלָֽם׃ לִרְאֹתָ֥ם תֹסִ֛יפוּ ע֖וֹד mō·šeh way·yō·mer ’el- hā·‘ām ’al- tî·rā·’ū hiṯ·yaṣ·ḇū ū·rə·’ū ’eṯ- Yah·weh ’ă·šer- yə·šū·‘aṯ ya·‘ă·śeh lā·ḵem hay·yō·wm kî ’ă·šer rə·’î·ṯem ’eṯ- miṣ·ra·yim hay·yō·wm lō ‘aḏ- ‘ō·w·lām lir·’ō·ṯām ṯō·sî·p̄ū ‘ō·wḏWLC · 13

The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

יְהוָ֖ה יִלָּחֵ֣ם לָכֶ֑ם וְאַתֶּ֖ם תַּחֲרִישֽׁוּן׃פ Yah·weh yil·lā·ḥêm lā·ḵem wə·’at·tem ta·ḥă·rî·šūnWLC · 14

Parting the Red Sea

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to Me? Tell… the Israelites… to go forward.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤌𐤄 𐤕𐤑𐤏𐤒 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤎𐤏𐤅

יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֔ה מַה־ תִּצְעַ֖ק אֵלָ֑י דַּבֵּ֥ר אֶל־ בְּנֵי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וְיִסָּֽעוּ׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- mō·šeh mah- tiṣ·‘aq ’ê·lāy dab·bêr ’el- bə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl wə·yis·sā·‘ūWLC · 15

And as for you, lift up your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, so that the Israelites… can go through the sea on dry ground.

𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤄𐤓𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤈𐤊 𐤅𐤍𐤈𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤉𐤃𐤊 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤒𐤏𐤄𐤅 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤁𐤔𐤄

וְאַתָּ֞ה הָרֵ֣ם אֶֽת־ מַטְּךָ֗ וּנְטֵ֧ה אֶת־ יָדְךָ֛ עַל־ הַיָּ֖ם וּבְקָעֵ֑הוּ בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל וְיָבֹ֧אוּ בְּת֥וֹךְ הַיָּ֖ם בַּיַּבָּשָֽׁה׃ wə·’at·tāh hā·rêm ’eṯ- maṭ·ṭə·ḵā ū·nə·ṭêh ’eṯ- yā·ḏə·ḵā ‘al- hay·yām ū·ḇə·qā·‘ê·hū ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl wə·yā·ḇō·’ū bə·ṯō·wḵ hay·yām bay·yab·bā·šāhWLC · 16

And I… will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them. Then I will gain honor by means of Pharaoh and all his army and chariots and horsemen.

The Egyptians will know that I am the LORD when I am honored through Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.”

And the angel of God, who had gone before the camp of Israel, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from before them and stood behind them,

so that it came between the camps of Egypt and… Israel. The cloud was there in the darkness, but it lit up the night. So all night long neither [camp] went near the other…

Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the LORD drove back the sea with a strong east wind that turned [it] into dry land. So the waters were divided,

and the Israelites… went through the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on their right and on their left.

And the Egyptians chased after them— all Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and horsemen— and followed them into… the sea.

At morning watch, however, the LORD looked down on the army of the Egyptians from the pillar of fire and cloud, and He threw their camp into confusion -…

He caused their chariot wheels to wobble, so that they had difficulty driving. “Let us flee from the Israelites,” said the Egyptians, “for the LORD is fighting for them against Egypt!”

מַרְכְּבֹתָ֔יו אֹפַ֣ן וַיָּ֗סַר אֵ֚ת בִּכְבֵדֻ֑ת וַֽיְנַהֲגֵ֖הוּ אָנ֙וּסָה֙ מִפְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיֹּ֣אמֶר מִצְרַ֗יִם כִּ֣י יְהוָ֔ה נִלְחָ֥ם לָהֶ֖ם בְּמִצְרָֽיִם׃פ mar·kə·ḇō·ṯāw ’ō·p̄an way·yā·sar ’êṯ biḵ·ḇê·ḏuṯ way·na·hă·ḡê·hū ’ā·nū·sāh mip·pə·nê yiś·rā·’êl way·yō·mer miṣ·ra·yim kî Yah·weh nil·ḥām lā·hem bə·miṣ·rå̄·yimWLC · 25

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, so that the waters may flow back over the Egyptians [and] their chariots… and horsemen.”

יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֔ה נְטֵ֥ה אֶת־ יָדְךָ֖ עַל־ הַיָּ֑ם הַמַּ֙יִם֙ וְיָשֻׁ֤בוּ עַל־ מִצְרַ֔יִם עַל־ רִכְבּ֖וֹ וְעַל־ פָּרָשָֽׁיו׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- mō·šeh nə·ṭêh ’eṯ- yā·ḏə·ḵā ‘al- hay·yām ham·ma·yim wə·yā·šu·ḇū ‘al- miṣ·ra·yim ‘al- riḵ·bōw wə·‘al- pā·rā·šāwWLC · 26

So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak… the sea returned to its normal state. As the Egyptians were retreating -, the LORD - swept them into the sea.

𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤈 𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤐𐤍𐤅𐤕 𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤋𐤀𐤉𐤕𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤎𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤅 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤉𐤌

מֹשֶׁ֨ה אֶת־ וַיֵּט֩ יָד֜וֹ עַל־ הַיָּ֗ם לִפְנ֥וֹת בֹּ֙קֶר֙ הַיָּ֜ם וַיָּ֨שָׁב לְאֵ֣יתָנ֔וֹ וּמִצְרַ֖יִם נָסִ֣ים לִקְרָאת֑וֹ יְהוָ֛ה אֶת־ מִצְרַ֖יִם וַיְנַעֵ֧ר בְּת֥וֹךְ הַיָּֽם׃ mō·šeh ’eṯ- way·yêṭ yā·ḏōw ‘al- hay·yām lip̄·nō·wṯ bō·qer hay·yām way·yā·šāḇ lə·’ê·ṯā·nōw ū·miṣ·ra·yim nā·sîm liq·rā·ṯōw Yah·weh ’eṯ- miṣ·ra·yim way·na·‘êr bə·ṯō·wḵ hay·yāmWLC · 27

The waters flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen— the entire army of Pharaoh that had chased [the Israelites] into the sea. Not one of them survived…

הַמַּ֗יִם וַיָּשֻׁ֣בוּ וַיְכַסּ֤וּ אֶת־ הָרֶ֙כֶב֙ וְאֶת־ הַפָּ֣רָשִׁ֔ים לְכֹל֙ חֵ֣יל פַּרְעֹ֔ה הַבָּאִ֥ים אַחֲרֵיהֶ֖ם בַּיָּ֑ם לֹֽא־ אֶחָֽד׃ בָּהֶ֖ם נִשְׁאַ֥ר עַד־ ham·ma·yim way·yā·šu·ḇū way·ḵas·sū ’eṯ- hā·re·ḵeḇ wə·’eṯ- hap·pā·rā·šîm lə·ḵōl ḥêl par·‘ōh hab·bā·’îm ’a·ḥă·rê·hem bay·yām lō- ’e·ḥāḏ bā·hem niš·’ar ‘aḏ-WLC · 28

But the Israelites… had walked through the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on their right and on their left.

That day the LORD saved Israel from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the shore…

When Israel saw the great power that the LORD had exercised over the Egyptians, the people feared the LORD and believed in Him and in His servant Moses.
