Chapter 12
The First Passover

Now the LORD said to Moses… and Aaron in the land of Egypt…,
𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤄𐤓𐤍 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓
יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֣ה וְאֶֽל־ אַהֲרֹ֔ן בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרַ֖יִם לֵאמֹֽר׃ Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- mō·šeh wə·’el- ’a·hă·rōn bə·’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“This month is the beginning of months for you; it [shall be] the first month of your year.

הַזֶּ֛ה הַחֹ֧דֶשׁ רֹ֣אשׁ חֳדָשִׁ֑ים לָכֶ֖ם הוּא֙ רִאשׁ֥וֹן לְחָדְשֵׁ֖י לָכֶ֔ם הַשָּׁנָֽה׃ haz·zeh ha·ḥō·ḏeš rōš ḥo·ḏā·šîm lā·ḵem hū ri·šō·wn lə·ḥā·ḏə·šê lā·ḵem haš·šā·nāh — WLC · 2

Tell… the whole congregation of Israel… that on the tenth day of this month each man must select a lamb for his family…, one per household.

דַּבְּר֗וּ אֶֽל־ כָּל־ עֲדַ֤ת יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר בֶּעָשֹׂ֖ר הַזֶּ֑ה לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ אִ֛ישׁ וְיִקְח֣וּ לָהֶ֗ם שֶׂ֥ה אָבֹ֖ת לְבֵית־ שֶׂ֥ה לַבָּֽיִת׃ dab·bə·rū ’el- kāl- ‘ă·ḏaṯ yiś·rā·’êl lê·mōr be·‘ā·śōr haz·zeh la·ḥō·ḏeš ’îš wə·yiq·ḥū lā·hem śeh ’ā·ḇōṯ lə·ḇêṯ- śeh lab·bā·yiṯ — WLC · 3

If the household… is too small for a whole lamb, they are to share with the nearest neighbor… based on the number of people, and apportion… the lamb accordingly -.

וְאִם־ הַבַּיִת֮ מִהְיֹ֣ת יִמְעַ֣ט מִשֶּׂה֒ ה֗וּא וְלָקַ֣ח הַקָּרֹ֥ב וּשְׁכֵנ֛וֹ אֶל־ בֵּית֖וֹ בְּמִכְסַ֣ת נְפָשֹׁ֑ת תָּכֹ֖סּוּ עַל־ הַשֶּֽׂה׃ אִ֚ישׁ לְפִ֣י אָכְל֔וֹ wə·’im- hab·ba·yiṯ mih·yōṯ yim·‘aṭ miś·śeh hū wə·lā·qaḥ haq·qā·rōḇ ū·šə·ḵê·nōw ’el- bê·ṯōw bə·miḵ·saṯ nə·p̄ā·šōṯ tā·ḵōs·sū ‘al- haś·śeh ’îš lə·p̄î ’ā·ḵə·lōw — WLC · 4

Your lamb must be an unblemished year-old… male, [and] you may take it from the sheep… or the goats.

לָכֶ֑ם שֶׂ֥ה יִהְיֶ֣ה תָמִ֛ים בֶּן־ שָׁנָ֖ה זָכָ֥ר תִּקָּֽחוּ׃ מִן־ הַכְּבָשִׂ֥ים וּמִן־ הָעִזִּ֖ים lā·ḵem śeh yih·yeh ṯā·mîm ben- šā·nāh zā·ḵār tiq·qā·ḥū min- hak·kə·ḇā·śîm ū·min- hā·‘iz·zîm — WLC · 5

You must keep it until the fourteenth… day of the month, when the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel will slaughter [the animals] at twilight.

וְהָיָ֤ה לְמִשְׁמֶ֔רֶת לָכֶם֙ עַ֣ד אַרְבָּעָ֥ה עָשָׂ֛ר י֖וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ כֹּ֛ל קְהַ֥ל עֲדַֽת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וְשָׁחֲט֣וּ אֹת֗וֹ בֵּ֥ין הָעַרְבָּֽיִם׃ wə·hā·yāh lə·miš·me·reṯ lā·ḵem ‘aḏ ’ar·bā·‘āh ‘ā·śār yō·wm haz·zeh la·ḥō·ḏeš kōl qə·hal ‘ă·ḏaṯ- yiś·rā·’êl wə·šā·ḥă·ṭū ’ō·ṯōw bên hā·‘ar·bā·yim — WLC · 6

They are to take some of the blood and put it on vvv the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat [the lambs] -

וְלָֽקְחוּ֙ מִן־ הַדָּ֔ם וְנָֽתְנ֛וּ עַל־ שְׁתֵּ֥י הַמְּזוּזֹ֖ת וְעַל־ הַמַּשְׁק֑וֹף עַ֚ל הַבָּ֣תִּ֔ים אֲשֶׁר־ יֹאכְל֥וּ אֹת֖וֹ בָּהֶֽם׃ wə·lā·qə·ḥū min- had·dām wə·nā·ṯə·nū ‘al- šə·tê ham·mə·zū·zōṯ wə·‘al- ham·maš·qō·wp̄ ‘al hab·bāt·tîm ’ă·šer- yō·ḵə·lū ’ō·ṯōw bā·hem — WLC · 7

They are to eat the meat that night, roasted over the fire, along with unleavened bread… and bitter herbs -.

וְאָכְל֥וּ אֶת־ הַבָּשָׂ֖ר הַזֶּ֑ה בַּלַּ֣יְלָה צְלִי־ אֵ֣שׁ וּמַצּ֔וֹת עַל־ מְרֹרִ֖ים יֹאכְלֻֽהוּ׃ wə·’ā·ḵə·lū ’eṯ- hab·bā·śār haz·zeh bal·lay·lāh ṣə·lî- ’êš ū·maṣ·ṣō·wṯ ‘al- mə·rō·rîm yō·ḵə·lu·hū — WLC · 8

Do not eat any of [the meat] raw or cooked in boiling water, but only… roasted over the fire— its head and legs… and inner parts.

אַל־ תֹּאכְל֤וּ מִמֶּ֙נּוּ֙ נָ֔א מְבֻשָּׁ֖ל וּבָשֵׁ֥ל בַּמָּ֑יִם כִּ֣י אִם־ צְלִי־ אֵ֔שׁ רֹאשׁ֥וֹ עַל־ כְּרָעָ֖יו וְעַל־ קִרְבּֽוֹ׃ ’al- tō·ḵə·lū mim·men·nū nā mə·ḇuš·šāl ū·ḇā·šêl bam·mā·yim kî ’im- ṣə·lî- ’êš rō·šōw ‘al- kə·rā·‘āw wə·‘al- qir·bōw — WLC · 9

Do not leave any of it until morning; before the morning you must burn up… any part that is left over.

וְלֹא־ תוֹתִ֥ירוּ מִמֶּ֖נּוּ עַד־ בֹּ֑קֶר עַד־ בֹּ֖קֶר בָּאֵ֥שׁ תִּשְׂרֹֽפוּ׃ מִמֶּ֛נּוּ וְהַנֹּתָ֥ר wə·lō- ṯō·w·ṯî·rū mim·men·nū ‘aḏ- bō·qer ‘aḏ- bō·qer bā·’êš tiś·rō·p̄ū mim·men·nū wə·han·nō·ṯār — WLC · 10

This is how you are to eat it: You must be fully dressed for travel…, with your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. You are to eat in haste; it is the LORD’s Passover.

וְכָכָה֮ תֹּאכְל֣וּ אֹתוֹ֒ מָתְנֵיכֶ֣ם חֲגֻרִ֔ים נַֽעֲלֵיכֶם֙ בְּרַגְלֵיכֶ֔ם וּמַקֶּלְכֶ֖ם בְּיֶדְכֶ֑ם וַאֲכַלְתֶּ֤ם אֹתוֹ֙ בְּחִפָּז֔וֹן ה֖וּא לַיהוָֽה׃ פֶּ֥סַח wə·ḵā·ḵāh tō·ḵə·lū ’ō·ṯōw mā·ṯə·nê·ḵem ḥă·ḡu·rîm na·‘ă·lê·ḵem bə·raḡ·lê·ḵem ū·maq·qel·ḵem bə·yeḏ·ḵem wa·’ă·ḵal·tem ’ō·ṯōw bə·ḥip·pā·zō·wn hū Yah·weh pe·saḥ — WLC · 11

On that night I will pass through the land of Egypt and strike down every firstborn male -, both man and beast, and I will execute judgment against all the gods of Egypt. I am the LORD.

הַזֶּה֒ בַּלַּ֣יְלָה וְעָבַרְתִּ֣י בְאֶֽרֶץ־ מִצְרַיִם֮ וְהִכֵּיתִ֤י כָל־ בְּכוֹר֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם מֵאָדָ֖ם וְעַד־ בְּהֵמָ֑ה אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֥ה שְׁפָטִ֖ים וּבְכָל־ אֱלֹהֵ֥י מִצְרַ֛יִם אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ haz·zeh bal·lay·lāh wə·‘ā·ḇar·tî ḇə·’e·reṣ- miṣ·ra·yim wə·hik·kê·ṯî ḵāl bə·ḵō·wr bə·’e·reṣ miṣ·ra·yim mê·’ā·ḏām wə·‘aḏ- bə·hê·māh ’e·‘ĕ·śeh šə·p̄ā·ṭîm ū·ḇə·ḵāl ’ĕ·lō·hê miṣ·ra·yim ’ă·nî Yah·weh — WLC · 12

The blood on the houses where you are staying will be a sign; when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No plague will fall on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

הַדָּ֨ם לָכֶ֜ם עַ֤ל הַבָּתִּים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אַתֶּ֣ם שָׁ֔ם וְהָיָה֩ לְאֹ֗ת וְרָאִ֙יתִי֙ אֶת־ הַדָּ֔ם וּפָסַחְתִּ֖י עֲלֵכֶ֑ם וְלֹֽא־ נֶ֙גֶף֙ יִֽהְיֶ֨ה בָכֶ֥ם לְמַשְׁחִ֔ית בְּהַכֹּתִ֖י בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ had·dām lā·ḵem ‘al hab·bāt·tîm ’ă·šer ’at·tem šām wə·hā·yāh lə·’ōṯ wə·rā·’î·ṯî ’eṯ- had·dām ū·p̄ā·saḥ·tî ‘ă·lê·ḵem wə·lō- ne·ḡep̄ yih·yeh ḇā·ḵem lə·maš·ḥîṯ bə·hak·kō·ṯî bə·’e·reṣ miṣ·rā·yim — WLC · 13
The Feast of Unleavened Bread

And this day will be a memorial for you, and you are to celebrate it as a feast to the LORD, as a permanent statute for the generations to come.

הַזֶּ֤ה הַיּ֨וֹם וְהָיָה֩ לְזִכָּר֔וֹן לָכֶם֙ וְחַגֹּתֶ֥ם אֹת֖וֹ חַ֣ג לַֽיהוָ֑ה תְּחָגֻּֽהוּ׃ עוֹלָ֖ם חֻקַּ֥ת לְדֹרֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם haz·zeh hay·yō·wm wə·hā·yāh lə·zik·kā·rō·wn lā·ḵem wə·ḥag·gō·ṯem ’ō·ṯōw ḥaḡ Yah·weh tə·ḥāg·gu·hū ‘ō·w·lām ḥuq·qaṯ lə·ḏō·rō·ṯê·ḵem — WLC · 14

For seven days you must eat… unleavened bread. On the first day you are to remove the leaven from your houses… Whoever eats anything leavened from the first day through the seventh… must be cut off… from Israel.

שִׁבְעַ֤ת יָמִים֙ תֹּאכֵ֔לוּ אַ֚ךְ מַצּ֣וֹת הָרִאשׁ֔וֹן בַּיּ֣וֹם תַּשְׁבִּ֥יתוּ שְּׂאֹ֖ר מִבָּתֵּיכֶ֑ם כִּ֣י׀ כָּל־ אֹכֵ֣ל חָמֵ֗ץ הָרִאשֹׁ֖ן מִיּ֥וֹם עַד־ הַשְּׁבִעִֽי׃ י֥וֹם וְנִכְרְתָ֞ה הַנֶּ֤פֶשׁ הַהִוא֙ מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֔ל šiḇ·‘aṯ yā·mîm tō·ḵê·lū ’aḵ maṣ·ṣō·wṯ hā·ri·šō·wn bay·yō·wm taš·bî·ṯū śə·’ōr mib·bāt·tê·ḵem kî kāl- ’ō·ḵêl ḥā·mêṣ hā·ri·šōn mî·yō·wm ‘aḏ- haš·šə·ḇi·‘î yō·wm wə·niḵ·rə·ṯāh han·ne·p̄eš ha·hi·w mî·yiś·rā·’êl — WLC · 15

On the first day you are to hold a sacred assembly, and another… on the seventh day. You must not do any work on those days, except to prepare the meals -— that is all you may do

הָרִאשׁוֹן֙ וּבַיּ֤וֹם יִהְיֶ֣ה לָכֶ֑ם כָּל־ קֹ֔דֶשׁ מִקְרָא־ קֹ֖דֶשׁ מִקְרָא־ הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י וּבַיּוֹם֙ בָהֶ֔ם לֹא־ יֵעָשֶׂ֣ה מְלָאכָה֙ אַ֚ךְ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יֵאָכֵ֣ל נֶ֔פֶשׁ לְכָל־ ה֥וּא לְבַדּ֖וֹ יֵעָשֶׂ֥ה לָכֶֽם׃ hā·ri·šō·wn ū·ḇay·yō·wm yih·yeh lā·ḵem kāl- qō·ḏeš miq·rā- qō·ḏeš miq·rā- haš·šə·ḇî·‘î ū·ḇay·yō·wm ḇā·hem lō- yê·‘ā·śeh mə·lā·ḵāh ’aḵ ’ă·šer yê·’ā·ḵêl ne·p̄eš lə·ḵāl hū lə·ḇad·dōw yê·‘ā·śeh lā·ḵem — WLC · 16

So you are to keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread, for on this very day I brought your divisions out of the land of Egypt. You must keep this day as a permanent statute for the generations to come.

For seven days there must be no leaven found in your houses. If anyone eats something leavened, that person, whether a foreigner or native of the land, must be cut off from the congregation of Israel.

Take a cluster of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin, and brush the blood - on the top and vvv sides of the doorframe. None… of you shall go out the door of his house until morning.

When the LORD passes through to strike down the Egyptians, He will see the blood on the top and vvv sides of the doorframe and will pass over that doorway; so He will not allow the destroyer to enter… your houses and strike you down.

Now at midnight… the LORD struck down every firstborn male in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sat on his throne, to the firstborn of the prisoner in the dungeon…, as well as all the firstborn among the livestock.

And in order to send them out of the land quickly, the Egyptians… urged the people on. “For [otherwise],” they said, “we are all going to die!”

So the people took their dough before it was leavened, [carrying it] on their shoulders in kneading bowls wrapped in clothing.

Furthermore, the Israelites… acted on Moses’ word and asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and gold, and for clothing.

And the LORD gave the people such favor in the sight of the Egyptians that they granted their request. In this way they plundered the Egyptians.

Since their dough had no leaven, the people baked - what they had brought out of Egypt into unleavened loaves. For when they had been driven out of Egypt, they could not delay and had not prepared any provisions for themselves.

- At the end of the 430… years, to the very day, all the LORD’s divisions went out of the land of Egypt.

If a foreigner resides with you and wants to celebrate the LORD’s Passover, all the males [in the household] must be circumcised then he may come near to celebrate it, and he shall be like a native of the land… But no uncircumcised man may eat of it.
