Chapter 42

Joseph’s Brothers Sent to Egypt

1

When Jacob learned that there was grain in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why are you staring at one another?”

𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤔 𐤔𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤏𐤒𐤁 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤌𐤄 𐤕𐤕𐤓𐤀𐤅

יַעֲקֹ֔ב וַיַּ֣רְא כִּ֥י יֶשׁ־ שֶׁ֖בֶר בְּמִצְרָ֑יִם יַעֲקֹב֙ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לְבָנָ֔יו לָ֖מָּה תִּתְרָאֽוּ׃ ya·‘ă·qōḇ way·yar kî yeš- še·ḇer bə·miṣ·rā·yim ya·‘ă·qōḇ way·yō·mer lə·ḇā·nāw lām·māh tiṯ·rā·’ūWLC · 1

“Look,” he added, “I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy some for us…, so that we may live and not die.”

הִנֵּ֣ה וַיֹּ֕אמֶר שָׁמַ֔עְתִּי כִּ֥י יֶשׁ־ שֶׁ֖בֶר בְּמִצְרָ֑יִם רְדוּ־ שָׁ֙מָּה֙ וְשִׁבְרוּ־ לָ֣נוּ מִשָּׁ֔ם וְנִחְיֶ֖ה וְלֹ֥א נָמֽוּת׃ hin·nêh way·yō·mer šā·ma‘·tî kî yeš- še·ḇer bə·miṣ·rā·yim rə·ḏū- šām·māh wə·šiḇ·rū- lā·nū miš·šām wə·niḥ·yeh wə·lō nā·mūṯWLC · 2

So ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt.

𐤏𐤔𐤓𐤄 𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤐 𐤀𐤇𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤃𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤁𐤓 𐤁𐤓 𐤌𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌

עֲשָׂרָ֑ה יוֹסֵ֖ף אֲחֵֽי־ וַיֵּרְד֥וּ לִשְׁבֹּ֥ר בָּ֖ר מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ ‘ă·śā·rāh yō·w·sêp̄ ’ă·ḥê- way·yê·rə·ḏū liš·bōr bār mim·miṣ·rā·yimWLC · 3

  • But Jacob did not send Joseph’s brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, “I am afraid that harm might befall him.”

וְאֶת־ יַעֲקֹ֖ב לֹא־ שָׁלַ֥ח יוֹסֵ֔ף אֲחִ֣י בִּנְיָמִין֙ אֶת־ אֶחָ֑יו כִּ֣י אָמַ֔ר פֶּן־ אָסֽוֹן׃ יִקְרָאֶ֖נּוּ wə·’eṯ- ya·‘ă·qōḇ lō- šā·laḥ yō·w·sêp̄ ’ă·ḥî bin·yā·mîn ’eṯ- ’e·ḥāw kî ’ā·mar pen- ’ā·sō·wn yiq·rā·’en·nūWLC · 4

So the sons of Israel were among those who came to buy grain, since the famine had [also] spread to the land of Canaan.

𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤁𐤓 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤁 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍

בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בְּת֣וֹךְ הַבָּאִ֑ים וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ לִשְׁבֹּ֖ר כִּֽי־ הָרָעָ֖ב הָיָ֥ה בְּאֶ֥רֶץ כְּנָֽעַן׃ bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl bə·ṯō·wḵ hab·bā·’îm way·yā·ḇō·’ū liš·bōr kî- hā·rā·‘āḇ hā·yāh bə·’e·reṣ kə·nā·‘anWLC · 5

Now Joseph was the ruler of the land; [he was the one] who sold grain to all its people. So when [his] brothers arrived, they bowed down before him with their faces to the ground.

וְיוֹסֵ֗ף ה֚וּא הַשַּׁלִּ֣יט עַל־ הָאָ֔רֶץ ה֥וּא הַמַּשְׁבִּ֖יר לְכָל־ הָאָ֑רֶץ עַ֣ם יוֹסֵ֔ף אֲחֵ֣י וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ וַיִּשְׁתַּֽחֲווּ־ ל֥וֹ אַפַּ֖יִם אָֽרְצָה׃ wə·yō·w·sêp̄ hū haš·šal·lîṭ ‘al- hā·’ā·reṣ hū ham·maš·bîr lə·ḵāl hā·’ā·reṣ ‘am yō·w·sêp̄ ’ă·ḥê way·yā·ḇō·’ū way·yiš·ta·ḥă·wū- lōw ’ap·pa·yim ’ā·rə·ṣāhWLC · 6

And when Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he treated them as strangers… and spoke harshly to them. “Where have you come from?” he asked… “From the land of Canaan,” they replied. “[We are here] to buy food.”

יוֹסֵ֛ף אֶת־ וַיַּ֥רְא אֶחָ֖יו וַיַּכִּרֵ֑ם וַיִּתְנַכֵּ֨ר אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם וַיְדַבֵּ֧ר קָשׁ֗וֹת אִתָּ֣ם מֵאַ֣יִן בָּאתֶ֔ם וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵהֶם֙ מֵאֶ֥רֶץ כְּנַ֖עַן וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ לִשְׁבָּר־ אֹֽכֶל׃ yō·w·sêp̄ ’eṯ- way·yar ’e·ḥāw way·yak·ki·rêm way·yiṯ·nak·kêr ’ă·lê·hem way·ḏab·bêr qā·šō·wṯ ’it·tām mê·’a·yin bā·ṯem way·yō·mer ’ă·lê·hem mê·’e·reṣ kə·na·‘an way·yō·mə·rū liš·bār- ’ō·ḵelWLC · 7

Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him.

𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤐 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤊𐤓 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤄𐤊𐤓𐤄𐤅

יוֹסֵ֖ף אֶת־ וַיַּכֵּ֥ר אֶחָ֑יו וְהֵ֖ם לֹ֥א הִכִּרֻֽהוּ׃ yō·w·sêp̄ ’eṯ- way·yak·kêr ’e·ḥāw wə·hêm lō hik·ki·ru·hūWLC · 8

Joseph remembered his dreams - about them and said…, “You are spies! You have come to see if our land [is] vulnerable.”

𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤐 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤆𐤊𐤓 𐤄𐤇𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤇𐤋𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤓𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤏𐤓𐤅𐤕

יוֹסֵ֔ף אֵ֚ת וַיִּזְכֹּ֣ר הַחֲלֹמ֔וֹת אֲשֶׁ֥ר חָלַ֖ם לָהֶ֑ם וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵהֶם֙ אַתֶּ֔ם מְרַגְּלִ֣ים בָּאתֶֽם׃ לִרְא֛וֹת אֶת־ הָאָ֖רֶץ עֶרְוַ֥ת yō·w·sêp̄ ’êṯ way·yiz·kōr ha·ḥă·lō·mō·wṯ ’ă·šer ḥā·lam lā·hem way·yō·mer ’ă·lê·hem ’at·tem mə·rag·gə·lîm bā·ṯem lir·’ō·wṯ ’eṯ- hā·’ā·reṣ ‘er·waṯWLC · 9

“Not so, my lord,” they replied… “Your servants have come to buy food.

𐤋𐤀 𐤀𐤃𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤊 𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤁𐤓 𐤀𐤊𐤋

לֹ֣א אֲדֹנִ֑י וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ אֵלָ֖יו וַעֲבָדֶ֥יךָ בָּ֖אוּ לִשְׁבָּר־ אֹֽכֶל׃ lō ’ă·ḏō·nî way·yō·mə·rū ’ê·lāw wa·‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā bā·’ū liš·bār- ’ō·ḵelWLC · 10

We are all sons of one man. Your servants… are honest [men], not spies.”

𐤍𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤊𐤋𐤍𐤅 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤍𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤌𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤉𐤌

נָ֑חְנוּ כֻּלָּ֕נוּ בְּנֵ֥י אֶחָ֖ד אִישׁ־ עֲבָדֶ֖יךָ אֲנַ֔חְנוּ הָי֥וּ כֵּנִ֣ים לֹא־ מְרַגְּלִֽים׃ nā·ḥə·nū kul·lā·nū bə·nê ’e·ḥāḏ ’îš- ‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā ’ă·naḥ·nū hā·yū kê·nîm lō- mə·rag·gə·lîmWLC · 11

“No,”… he told them. “You have come to see if our land [is] vulnerable.”

𐤋𐤀 𐤊𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤁𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤓𐤀𐤅𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤏𐤓𐤅𐤕

לֹ֕א כִּֽי־ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֑ם בָּאתֶ֥ם לִרְאֽוֹת׃ הָאָ֖רֶץ עֶרְוַ֥ת lō kî- way·yō·mer ’ă·lê·hem bā·ṯem lir·’ō·wṯ hā·’ā·reṣ ‘er·waṯWLC · 12

But they answered, “Your servants… are twelve… brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan… The youngest is now with our father, and one is no more.”

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤍𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤍𐤉 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤒𐤈𐤍 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤄𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤀𐤉𐤍𐤍𐤅

וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ עֲבָדֶ֨יךָ אֲנַ֛חְנוּ שְׁנֵ֣ים עָשָׂר֩ אַחִ֧ים׀ בְּנֵ֥י אֶחָ֖ד אִישׁ־ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנָ֑עַן וְהִנֵּ֨ה הַקָּטֹ֤ן הַיּ֔וֹם אֶת־ אָבִ֙ינוּ֙ וְהָאֶחָ֖ד אֵינֶֽנּוּ׃ way·yō·mə·rū ‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā ’ă·naḥ·nū šə·nêm ‘ā·śār ’a·ḥîm bə·nê ’e·ḥāḏ ’îš- bə·’e·reṣ kə·nā·‘an wə·hin·nêh haq·qā·ṭōn hay·yō·wm ’eṯ- ’ā·ḇî·nū wə·hā·’e·ḥāḏ ’ê·nen·nūWLC · 13

Then Joseph… declared…, “Just as I said…, you are spies!

𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤐 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤉𐤌

יוֹסֵ֑ף ה֗וּא אֲשֶׁ֨ר וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֖ם דִּבַּ֧רְתִּי אֲלֵכֶ֛ם לֵאמֹ֖ר אַתֶּֽם׃ מְרַגְּלִ֥ים yō·w·sêp̄ hū ’ă·šer way·yō·mer ’ă·lê·hem dib·bar·tî ’ă·lê·ḵem lê·mōr ’at·tem mə·rag·gə·lîmWLC · 14

And this is how you will be tested: As surely as Pharaoh lives, you shall not leave this place unless… your youngest brother comes here.

𐤁𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤕𐤁𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤇𐤉 𐤀𐤌 𐤕𐤑𐤀𐤅 𐤌𐤆𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤌 𐤄𐤒𐤈𐤍 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤁𐤁𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤍𐤄

בְּזֹ֖את תִּבָּחֵ֑נוּ פַרְעֹה֙ חֵ֤י אִם־ תֵּצְא֣וּ מִזֶּ֔ה כִּ֧י אִם־ הַקָּטֹ֖ן אֲחִיכֶ֥ם בְּב֛וֹא הֵֽנָּה׃ bə·zōṯ tib·bā·ḥê·nū p̄ar·‘ōh ḥê ’im- tê·ṣə·’ū miz·zeh kî ’im- haq·qā·ṭōn ’ă·ḥî·ḵem bə·ḇō·w hên·nāhWLC · 15

Send one of your number to get your brother; the rest of you will be confined so that the truth of your words may be tested… If they are untrue, then as surely as Pharaoh… lives, you are spies!”

𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤅 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤌𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤄𐤀𐤎𐤓𐤅 𐤄𐤀𐤌𐤕 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤕𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤌 𐤋𐤀 𐤐𐤓𐤏𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤇𐤉 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤌𐤓𐤂𐤋𐤉𐤌

שִׁלְח֨וּ אֶחָד֮ מִכֶּ֣ם וְיִקַּ֣ח אֶת־ אֲחִיכֶם֒ וְאַתֶּם֙ הֵאָ֣סְר֔וּ הַֽאֱמֶ֖ת דִּבְרֵיכֶ֔ם וְיִבָּֽחֲנוּ֙ אִתְּכֶ֑ם וְאִם־ לֹ֕א פַרְעֹ֔ה כִּ֥י חֵ֣י אַתֶּֽם׃ מְרַגְּלִ֖ים šil·ḥū ’e·ḥāḏ mik·kem wə·yiq·qaḥ ’eṯ- ’ă·ḥî·ḵem wə·’at·tem hê·’ā·sə·rū ha·’ĕ·meṯ diḇ·rê·ḵem wə·yib·bā·ḥă·nū ’it·tə·ḵem wə·’im- lō p̄ar·‘ōh kî ḥê ’at·tem mə·rag·gə·lîmWLC · 16

So Joseph imprisoned them -… for three days,

𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤎𐤐 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤔𐤌𐤓 𐤔𐤋𐤔𐤕 𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌

וַיֶּאֱסֹ֥ף אֹתָ֛ם אֶל־ מִשְׁמָ֖ר שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת יָמִֽים׃ way·ye·’ĕ·sōp̄ ’ō·ṯām ’el- miš·mār šə·lō·šeṯ yā·mîmWLC · 17

and on the third day [he] said to them, “I fear God. So do this and you will live:

𐤄𐤔𐤋𐤉𐤔𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤉𐤅𐤎𐤐 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤄𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤇𐤉𐤅

הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֔י בַּיּ֣וֹם יוֹסֵף֙ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֤ם אֶת־ אֲנִ֥י יָרֵֽא׃ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים עֲשׂ֖וּ זֹ֥את וִֽחְי֑וּ haš·šə·lî·šî bay·yō·wm yō·w·sêp̄ way·yō·mer ’ă·lê·hem ’eṯ- ’ă·nî yā·rê hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ‘ă·śū zōṯ wiḥ·yūWLC · 18

If you… are honest, leave one of your brothers in custody… while the rest of you go and take back grain to relieve the hunger of your households.

𐤀𐤌 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤊𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤉𐤀𐤎𐤓 𐤁𐤁𐤉𐤕 𐤌𐤔𐤌𐤓𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤋𐤊𐤅 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤅 𐤔𐤁𐤓 𐤓𐤏𐤁𐤅𐤍 𐤁𐤕𐤉𐤊𐤌

אִם־ אַתֶּ֔ם אֲחִיכֶ֣ם כֵּנִ֣ים אֶחָ֔ד יֵאָסֵ֖ר בְּבֵ֣ית מִשְׁמַרְכֶ֑ם וְאַתֶּם֙ לְכ֣וּ הָבִ֔יאוּ שֶׁ֖בֶר רַעֲב֥וֹן בָּתֵּיכֶֽם׃ ’im- ’at·tem ’ă·ḥî·ḵem kê·nîm ’e·ḥāḏ yê·’ā·sêr bə·ḇêṯ miš·mar·ḵem wə·’at·tem lə·ḵū hā·ḇî·’ū še·ḇer ra·‘ă·ḇō·wn bāt·tê·ḵemWLC · 19

Then bring your youngest brother to me so that your words can be verified, that you may not die.” And to this they consented.

𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤕𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤅 𐤄𐤒𐤈𐤍 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤀𐤋𐤉 𐤃𐤁𐤓𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤌𐤅𐤕𐤅 𐤊𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤅

וְאֶת־ תָּבִ֣יאוּ הַקָּטֹן֙ אֲחִיכֶ֤ם אֵלַ֔י דִבְרֵיכֶ֖ם וְיֵאָמְנ֥וּ וְלֹ֣א תָמ֑וּתוּ כֵֽן׃ וַיַּעֲשׂוּ־ wə·’eṯ- tā·ḇî·’ū haq·qā·ṭōn ’ă·ḥî·ḵem ’ê·lay ḏiḇ·rê·ḵem wə·yê·’ā·mə·nū wə·lō ṯā·mū·ṯū ḵên way·ya·‘ă·śū-WLC · 20

Then they said to one another, “Surely we are being punished because of our brother. We saw his anguish when he pleaded with us, but we would not listen. That is why… this distress has come upon us.”

And Reuben responded, “Didn’t… I tell you not to sin against the boy? But you would not listen… Now we must account for his blood!”

They did not realize that Joseph understood them, since there was an interpreter between them.

And he turned away from them and wept. When he turned back and spoke… to them, he took Simeon from them and had him bound before their eyes.

Then Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, to return each man’s silver to his sack, and to give them provisions for their journey. This order was carried out

and they loaded the grain on their donkeys and departed…

At the place where they lodged for the night, one of them opened his sack to get feed for his donkey, and he saw his silver… in the mouth of the sack.

“My silver… has been returned!” he said to his brothers. “It is here in my sack.” Their hearts sank, and trembling, they turned to one another and said, “What is this that God has done to us?”

When they reached… their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they described to him all that had happened to them -:

“The man who is lord of the land spoke harshly… to us and accused us of spying on the country.

But we told him, ‘We are honest men, not spies.

וַנֹּ֥אמֶר אֵלָ֖יו אֲנָ֑חְנוּ הָיִ֖ינוּ כֵּנִ֣ים לֹ֥א מְרַגְּלִֽים׃ wan·nō·mer ’ê·lāw ’ă·nā·ḥə·nū hā·yî·nū kê·nîm lō mə·rag·gə·lîmWLC · 31

We are twelve… brothers, sons of one father. One is no more, and the youngest is now with our father in the land of Canaan.’

אֲנַ֛חְנוּ שְׁנֵים־ עָשָׂ֥ר אַחִ֖ים בְּנֵ֣י אָבִ֑ינוּ הָאֶחָ֣ד אֵינֶ֔נּוּ וְהַקָּטֹ֥ן הַיּ֛וֹם אֶת־ אָבִ֖ינוּ בְּאֶ֥רֶץ כְּנָֽעַן׃ ’ă·naḥ·nū šə·nêm- ‘ā·śār ’a·ḥîm bə·nê ’ā·ḇî·nū hā·’e·ḥāḏ ’ê·nen·nū wə·haq·qā·ṭōn hay·yō·wm ’eṯ- ’ā·ḇî·nū bə·’e·reṣ kə·nā·‘anWLC · 32

Then the man who is lord of the land said to us, ‘This is how I will know whether you are honest: Leave one brother with me, take food to relieve the hunger of your households, and go.

הָאִישׁ֙ אֲדֹנֵ֣י הָאָ֔רֶץ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלֵ֗ינוּ בְּזֹ֣את אֵדַ֔ע כִּ֥י אַתֶּ֑ם כֵנִ֖ים הַנִּ֣יחוּ הָֽאֶחָד֙ אֲחִיכֶ֤ם אִתִּ֔י וְאֶת־ קְח֥וּ רַעֲב֥וֹן בָּתֵּיכֶ֖ם וָלֵֽכוּ׃ hā·’îš ’ă·ḏō·nê hā·’ā·reṣ way·yō·mer ’ê·lê·nū bə·zōṯ ’ê·ḏa‘ kî ’at·tem ḵê·nîm han·nî·ḥū hā·’e·ḥāḏ ’ă·ḥî·ḵem ’it·tî wə·’eṯ- qə·ḥū ra·‘ă·ḇō·wn bāt·tê·ḵem wā·lê·ḵūWLC · 33

But bring your youngest brother back to me so I will know that you are not spies but honest men… -. Then I will give your brother back to you, and you can trade in the land.’”

וְ֠הָבִיאוּ אֶת־ הַקָּטֹן֮ אֲחִיכֶ֣ם אֵלַי֒ וְאֵֽדְעָ֗ה כִּ֣י אַתֶּ֔ם לֹ֤א מְרַגְּלִים֙ כִּ֥י כֵנִ֖ים אַתֶּ֑ם אֶת־ אֶתֵּ֣ן אֲחִיכֶם֙ לָכֶ֔ם וְאֶת־ תִּסְחָֽרוּ׃ הָאָ֖רֶץ wə·hā·ḇî·’ū ’eṯ- haq·qā·ṭōn ’ă·ḥî·ḵem ’ê·lay wə·’ê·ḏə·‘āh kî ’at·tem lō mə·rag·gə·lîm kî ḵê·nîm ’at·tem ’eṯ- ’et·tên ’ă·ḥî·ḵem lā·ḵem wə·’eṯ- tis·ḥā·rū hā·’ā·reṣWLC · 34

  • As they began emptying their sacks, there in each man’s sack was his bag of silver! And when they and their father saw the bags of silver, they were dismayed.

Their father Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my sons. Joseph is gone and Simeon is no more. Now you want to take Benjamin. Everything is going against me!”

Then Reuben said to his father,… “You may kill my two sons if I fail to bring him back to you. Put him in my care, and I will return him…”

But Jacob replied, “My son will not go down there with you, for his brother is dead, and he alone is left. If any harm comes… to him on your… journey, {you will bring} my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow.”
