Chapter 3

The Serpent’s Deception

1

Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field that the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Did God really… say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’”

𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤇𐤔 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤏𐤓𐤅𐤌 𐤌𐤊𐤋 𐤇𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤏𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤐 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤊𐤋 𐤏𐤑 𐤄𐤂𐤍

וְהַנָּחָשׁ֙ הָיָ֣ה עָר֔וּם מִכֹּל֙ חַיַּ֣ת הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהִ֑ים עָשָׂ֖ה וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אֶל־ הָ֣אִשָּׁ֔ה אֱלֹהִ֔ים כִּֽי־ אַ֚ף אָמַ֣ר לֹ֣א תֹֽאכְל֔וּ מִכֹּ֖ל עֵ֥ץ הַגָּֽן׃ wə·han·nā·ḥāš hā·yāh ‘ā·rūm mik·kōl ḥay·yaṯ haś·śā·ḏeh ’ă·šer Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hîm ‘ā·śāh way·yō·mer ’el- hā·’iš·šāh ’ĕ·lō·hîm kî- ’ap̄ ’ā·mar lō ṯō·ḵə·lū mik·kōl ‘êṣ hag·gānWLC · 1

The woman answered… the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden,

𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤇𐤔 𐤍𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤌𐤐𐤓𐤉 𐤏𐤑 𐤄𐤂𐤍

הָֽאִשָּׁ֖ה וַתֹּ֥אמֶר אֶל־ הַנָּחָ֑שׁ נֹאכֵֽל׃ מִפְּרִ֥י עֵֽץ־ הַגָּ֖ן hā·’iš·šāh wat·tō·mer ’el- han·nā·ḥāš nō·ḵêl mip·pə·rî ‘êṣ- hag·gānWLC · 2

but about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You must not eat of it [or] touch it, [or] you will die.’”

𐤅𐤌𐤐𐤓𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤑 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤄𐤂𐤍 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤕𐤂𐤏𐤅 𐤁𐤅 𐤐𐤍 𐤕𐤌𐤕𐤅𐤍

וּמִפְּרִ֣י הָעֵץ֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּתוֹךְ־ הַגָּן֒ אֱלֹהִ֗ים אָמַ֣ר לֹ֤א תֹֽאכְלוּ֙ מִמֶּ֔נּוּ וְלֹ֥א תִגְּע֖וּ בּ֑וֹ פֶּן־ תְּמֻתֽוּן׃ ū·mip·pə·rî hā·‘êṣ ’ă·šer bə·ṯō·wḵ- hag·gān ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’ā·mar lō ṯō·ḵə·lū mim·men·nū wə·lō ṯig·gə·‘ū bōw pen- tə·mu·ṯūnWLC · 3

“You will not surely die…,” the serpent told… the woman.

𐤋𐤀 𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤕𐤌𐤕𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤍𐤇𐤔 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄

לֹֽא־ מ֖וֹת תְּמֻתֽוּן׃ הַנָּחָ֖שׁ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֶל־ הָֽאִשָּׁ֑ה lō- mō·wṯ tə·mu·ṯūn han·nā·ḥāš way·yō·mer ’el- hā·’iš·šāhWLC · 4

“For God knows that in the day you eat of it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤃𐤏 𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤊𐤌 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊𐤌 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤉𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤐𐤒𐤇𐤅 𐤊𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤉 𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤅𐤓𐤏

כִּ֚י אֱלֹהִ֔ים יֹדֵ֣עַ כִּ֗י בְּיוֹם֙ אֲכָלְכֶ֣ם מִמֶּ֔נּוּ עֵֽינֵיכֶ֑ם וִהְיִיתֶם֙ וְנִפְקְח֖וּ כֵּֽאלֹהִ֔ים יֹדְעֵ֖י ט֥וֹב וָרָֽע׃ kî ’ĕ·lō·hîm yō·ḏê·a‘ kî bə·yō·wm ’ă·ḵā·lə·ḵem mim·men·nū ‘ê·nê·ḵem wih·yî·ṯem wə·nip̄·qə·ḥū kê·lō·hîm yō·ḏə·‘ê ṭō·wḇ wā·rā‘WLC · 5

When the woman saw that the tree [was] good for food and pleasing to the eyes, [and that it was] desirable for obtaining wisdom, she took the fruit and ate it. She also gave [some]… to her husband [who was] with her, and he ate it.

הָֽאִשָּׁ֡ה וַתֵּ֣רֶא כִּ֣י הָעֵ֨ץ טוֹב֩ לְמַאֲכָ֜ל וְכִ֧י ה֣וּא תַֽאֲוָה־ לָעֵינַ֗יִם הָעֵץ֙ וְנֶחְמָ֤ד לְהַשְׂכִּ֔יל וַתִּקַּ֥ח מִפִּרְי֖וֹ וַתֹּאכַ֑ל וַתִּתֵּ֧ן גַּם־ לְאִישָׁ֛הּ עִמָּ֖הּ וַיֹּאכַֽל׃ hā·’iš·šāh wat·tê·re kî hā·‘êṣ ṭō·wḇ lə·ma·’ă·ḵāl wə·ḵî hū ṯa·’ă·wāh- lā·‘ê·na·yim hā·‘êṣ wə·neḥ·māḏ lə·haś·kîl wat·tiq·qaḥ mip·pir·yōw wat·tō·ḵal wat·tit·tên gam- lə·’î·šāh ‘im·māh way·yō·ḵalWLC · 6

And the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they [were] naked; so they sewed together fig leaves and made coverings for themselves.

𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤐𐤒𐤇𐤍𐤄 𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤃𐤏𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤏𐤉𐤓𐤌𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤐𐤓𐤅 𐤕𐤀𐤍𐤄 𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤇𐤂𐤓𐤕 𐤋𐤄𐤌

עֵינֵ֣י שְׁנֵיהֶ֔ם וַתִּפָּקַ֙חְנָה֙ הֵ֑ם וַיֵּ֣דְע֔וּ כִּ֥י עֵֽירֻמִּ֖ם וַֽיִּתְפְּרוּ֙ תְאֵנָ֔ה עֲלֵ֣ה וַיַּעֲשׂ֥וּ חֲגֹרֹֽת׃ לָהֶ֖ם ‘ê·nê šə·nê·hem wat·tip·pā·qaḥ·nāh hêm way·yê·ḏə·‘ū kî ‘ê·rum·mim way·yiṯ·pə·rū ṯə·’ê·nāh ‘ă·lêh way·ya·‘ă·śū ḥă·ḡō·rōṯ lā·hemWLC · 7

God Arraigns Adam and Eve

Then the man and his wife heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the breeze of the day, and they hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤌𐤕𐤄𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤂𐤍 𐤋𐤓𐤅𐤇 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤇𐤁𐤀 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤕𐤅𐤊 𐤏𐤑 𐤄𐤂𐤍

הָֽאָדָ֜ם וְאִשְׁתּ֗וֹ וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֞וּ אֶת־ ק֨וֹל יְהוָ֧ה אֱלֹהִ֛ים מִתְהַלֵּ֥ךְ בַּגָּ֖ן לְר֣וּחַ הַיּ֑וֹם וַיִּתְחַבֵּ֨א מִפְּנֵי֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהִ֔ים בְּת֖וֹךְ עֵ֥ץ הַגָּֽן׃ hā·’ā·ḏām wə·’iš·tōw way·yiš·mə·‘ū ’eṯ- qō·wl Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hîm miṯ·hal·lêḵ bag·gān lə·rū·aḥ hay·yō·wm way·yiṯ·ḥab·bê mip·pə·nê Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hîm bə·ṯō·wḵ ‘êṣ hag·gānWLC · 8

But the LORD God called out to the man -, “Where [are] you?”

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤅 𐤀𐤉𐤊𐤄

יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהִ֖ים וַיִּקְרָ֛א אֶל־ הָֽאָדָ֑ם וַיֹּ֥אמֶר ל֖וֹ אַיֶּֽכָּה׃ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yiq·rā ’el- hā·’ā·ḏām way·yō·mer lōw ’ay·yek·kāhWLC · 9

“I heard Your voice in the garden,” he replied -, “and I was afraid because I [was] naked; so I hid myself.”

𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤕𐤉 𐤒𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤂𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤏𐤉𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤇𐤁𐤀

שָׁמַ֖עְתִּי קֹלְךָ֥ בַּגָּ֑ן וַיֹּ֕אמֶר אֶת־ וָאִירָ֛א כִּֽי־ אָנֹ֖כִי עֵירֹ֥ם וָאֵחָבֵֽא׃ šā·ma‘·tî qō·lə·ḵā bag·gān way·yō·mer ’eṯ- wā·’î·rā kî- ’ā·nō·ḵî ‘ê·rōm wā·’ê·ḥā·ḇêWLC · 10

“Who told you that you [were] naked?” asked [the LORD God]. “Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat -?”

𐤌𐤉 𐤄𐤂𐤉𐤃 𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤊𐤉 𐤏𐤉𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤏𐤑 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤑𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤋𐤁𐤋𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤊𐤋𐤕 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤅

מִ֚י הִגִּ֣יד לְךָ֔ אָ֑תָּה כִּ֥י עֵירֹ֖ם וַיֹּ֕אמֶר אֲכָל־ הֲמִן־ הָעֵ֗ץ אֲשֶׁ֧ר צִוִּיתִ֛יךָ לְבִלְתִּ֥י אָכָֽלְתָּ׃ מִמֶּ֖נּוּ mî hig·gîḏ lə·ḵā ’āt·tāh kî ‘ê·rōm way·yō·mer ’ă·ḵāl- hă·min- hā·‘êṣ ’ă·šer ṣiw·wî·ṯî·ḵā lə·ḇil·tî ’ā·ḵā·lə·tā mim·men·nūWLC · 11

And the man answered, “The woman whom You gave me, she gave me [fruit] from the tree, and I ate it.”

𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤄 𐤏𐤌𐤃𐤉 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤍𐤕𐤍𐤄 𐤋𐤉 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤏𐤑 𐤅𐤀𐤊𐤋

הָֽאָדָ֑ם וַיֹּ֖אמֶר הָֽאִשָּׁה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נָתַ֣תָּה עִמָּדִ֔י הִ֛וא נָֽתְנָה־ לִּ֥י מִן־ הָעֵ֖ץ וָאֹכֵֽל׃ hā·’ā·ḏām way·yō·mer hā·’iš·šāh ’ă·šer nā·ṯat·tāh ‘im·mā·ḏî hî nā·ṯə·nāh- lî min- hā·‘êṣ wā·’ō·ḵêlWLC · 12

Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What [is] this you have done?” “The serpent deceived me,” [she] replied, “and I ate.”

יְהוָ֧ה אֱלֹהִ֛ים וַיֹּ֨אמֶר לָאִשָּׁ֖ה מַה־ זֹּ֣את עָשִׂ֑ית הַנָּחָ֥שׁ הִשִּׁיאַ֖נִי הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ וָאֹכֵֽל׃ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yō·mer lā·’iš·šāh mah- zōṯ ‘ā·śîṯ han·nā·ḥāš hiš·šî·’a·nî hā·’iš·šāh wat·tō·mer wā·’ō·ḵêlWLC · 13

The Fate of the Serpent

So the LORD God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and every beast of the field! On your belly {will} you go, and dust you {will} eat, all the days of your life.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤍𐤇𐤔 𐤊𐤉 𐤏𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤆𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤓𐤅𐤓 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤌𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤁𐤄𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤌𐤊𐤋 𐤇𐤉𐤕 𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤂𐤇𐤍𐤊 𐤕𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤏𐤐𐤓 𐤕𐤀𐤊𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤉𐤌𐤉 𐤇𐤉𐤉𐤊

יְהֹוָ֨ה אֱלֹהִ֥ים׀ וַיֹּאמֶר֩ אֶֽל־ הַנָּחָשׁ֮ כִּ֣י עָשִׂ֣יתָ זֹּאת֒ אָר֤וּר אַתָּה֙ מִכָּל־ הַבְּהֵמָ֔ה וּמִכֹּ֖ל חַיַּ֣ת הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה עַל־ גְּחֹנְךָ֣ תֵלֵ֔ךְ וְעָפָ֥ר תֹּאכַ֖ל כָּל־ יְמֵ֥י חַיֶּֽיךָ׃ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yō·mer ’el- han·nā·ḥāš kî ‘ā·śî·ṯā zōṯ ’ā·rūr ’at·tāh mik·kāl hab·bə·hê·māh ū·mik·kōl ḥay·yaṯ haś·śā·ḏeh ‘al- gə·ḥō·nə·ḵā ṯê·lêḵ wə·‘ā·p̄ār tō·ḵal kāl- yə·mê ḥay·ye·ḵāWLC · 14

And I will put enmity between [you] and the woman, and between your seed… and her seed. He {will} crush your head, and you {will} strike his heel.

בֵּֽינְךָ֙ אָשִׁ֗ית וְאֵיבָ֣ה׀ וּבֵ֣ין הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה וּבֵ֥ין זַרְעֲךָ֖ וּבֵ֣ין זַרְעָ֑הּ ה֚וּא יְשׁוּפְךָ֣ רֹ֔אשׁ וְאַתָּ֖ה תְּשׁוּפֶ֥נּוּ עָקֵֽב׃ס bê·nə·ḵā ’ā·šîṯ wə·’ê·ḇāh ū·ḇên hā·’iš·šāh ū·ḇên zar·‘ă·ḵā ū·ḇên zar·‘āh hū yə·šū·p̄ə·ḵā rōš wə·’at·tāh tə·šū·p̄en·nū ‘ā·qêḇWLC · 15

The Punishment of Mankind

To the woman He said: “I will sharply increase… your pain in childbirth; in pain you will bring forth children. Your desire [will be] for your husband, and he will rule over you.”

𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤔𐤄 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤏𐤑𐤁𐤅𐤍𐤊 𐤅𐤄𐤓𐤍𐤊 𐤁𐤏𐤑𐤁 𐤕𐤋𐤃𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤕𐤔𐤅𐤒𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤉𐤔𐤊 𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤉𐤌𐤔𐤋 𐤁𐤊𐤎

אֶֽל־ הָאִשָּׁ֣ה אָמַ֗ר הַרְבָּ֤ה אַרְבֶּה֙ עִצְּבוֹנֵ֣ךְ וְהֵֽרֹנֵ֔ךְ בְּעֶ֖צֶב תֵּֽלְדִ֣י בָנִ֑ים תְּשׁ֣וּקָתֵ֔ךְ וְאֶל־ אִישֵׁךְ֙ וְה֖וּא יִמְשָׁל־ בָּֽךְ׃ס ’el- hā·’iš·šāh ’ā·mar har·bāh ’ar·beh ‘iṣ·ṣə·ḇō·w·nêḵ wə·hê·rō·nêḵ bə·‘e·ṣeḇ tê·lə·ḏî ḇā·nîm tə·šū·qā·ṯêḵ wə·’el- ’î·šêḵ wə·hū yim·šāl- bāḵWLC · 16

And to Adam He said: “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded… you not to eat -, cursed [is] the ground because of you; through toil you will eat [of] it all the days of your life.

Both thorns and thistles it {will} yield for you, and you {will} eat the plants of the field.

וְק֥וֹץ וְדַרְדַּ֖ר תַּצְמִ֣יחַֽ לָ֑ךְ וְאָכַלְתָּ֖ אֶת־ עֵ֥שֶׂב הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ wə·qō·wṣ wə·ḏar·dar taṣ·mî·aḥ lāḵ wə·’ā·ḵal·tā ’eṯ- ‘ê·śeḇ haś·śā·ḏehWLC · 18

By the sweat of your brow you will eat [your] bread, until you return to the ground— because out of it were you taken. For dust you [are], and to dust you {shall} return.”

בְּזֵעַ֤ת אַפֶּ֙יךָ֙ תֹּ֣אכַל לֶ֔חֶם עַ֤ד שֽׁוּבְךָ֙ אֶל־ הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה כִּ֥י מִמֶּ֖נָּה לֻקָּ֑חְתָּ כִּֽי־ עָפָ֣ר אַ֔תָּה וְאֶל־ עָפָ֖ר תָּשֽׁוּב׃ bə·zê·‘aṯ ’ap·pe·ḵā tō·ḵal le·ḥem ‘aḏ šū·ḇə·ḵā ’el- hā·’ă·ḏā·māh kî mim·men·nāh luq·qā·ḥə·tā kî- ‘ā·p̄ār ’at·tāh wə·’el- ‘ā·p̄ār tā·šūḇWLC · 19

And Adam vvv named his wife Eve, because she would be the mother of all the living.

The Expulsion from Paradise

And the LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and He clothed them.

יְהוָ֨ה אֱלֹהִ֜ים וַיַּעַשׂ֩ כָּתְנ֥וֹת ע֖וֹר לְאָדָ֧ם וּלְאִשְׁתּ֛וֹ וַיַּלְבִּשֵֽׁם׃פ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·ya·‘aś kā·ṯə·nō·wṯ ‘ō·wr lə·’ā·ḏām ū·lə·’iš·tōw way·yal·bi·šêmWLC · 21

Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil. And now, lest he reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever…”

יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהִ֗ים וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀ הֵ֤ן הָֽאָדָם֙ הָיָה֙ כְּאַחַ֣ד מִמֶּ֔נּוּ לָדַ֖עַת ט֣וֹב וָרָ֑ע וְעַתָּ֣ה׀ פֶּן־ יִשְׁלַ֣ח יָד֗וֹ וְלָקַח֙ גַּ֚ם מֵעֵ֣ץ הַֽחַיִּ֔ים וְאָכַ֖ל וָחַ֥י לְעֹלָֽם׃ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yō·mer hên hā·’ā·ḏām hā·yāh kə·’a·ḥaḏ mim·men·nū lā·ḏa·‘aṯ ṭō·wḇ wā·rā‘ wə·‘at·tāh pen- yiš·laḥ yā·ḏōw wə·lā·qaḥ gam mê·‘êṣ ha·ḥay·yîm wə·’ā·ḵal wā·ḥay lə·‘ō·lāmWLC · 22

Therefore the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken -.

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤄𐤅 𐤌𐤂𐤍 𐤏𐤃𐤍 𐤋𐤏𐤁𐤃 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤒𐤇 𐤌𐤔𐤌

יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהִ֖ים וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֵ֛הוּ מִגַּן־ עֵ֑דֶן לַֽעֲבֹד֙ אֶת־ הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֻקַּ֖ח מִשָּֽׁם׃ Yah·weh ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·šal·lə·ḥê·hū mig·gan- ‘ê·ḏen la·‘ă·ḇōḏ ’eṯ- hā·’ă·ḏā·māh ’ă·šer luq·qaḥ miš·šāmWLC · 23

So He drove out the man and stationed cherubim on the east side of the Garden of Eden, along with a whirling sword of flame to guard the way to the tree of life.

וַיְגָ֖רֶשׁ אֶת־ הָֽאָדָ֑ם אֶת־ וַיַּשְׁכֵּן֩ הַכְּרֻבִ֗ים מִקֶּ֨דֶם לְגַן־ עֵ֜דֶן וְאֵ֨ת הַמִּתְהַפֶּ֔כֶת הַחֶ֙רֶב֙ לַ֤הַט לִשְׁמֹ֕ר אֶת־ דֶּ֖רֶךְ עֵ֥ץ הַֽחַיִּֽים׃ס way·ḡā·reš ’eṯ- hā·’ā·ḏām ’eṯ- way·yaš·kên hak·kə·ru·ḇîm miq·qe·ḏem lə·ḡan- ‘ê·ḏen wə·’êṯ ham·miṯ·hap·pe·ḵeṯ ha·ḥe·reḇ la·haṭ liš·mōr ’eṯ- de·reḵ ‘êṣ ha·ḥay·yîmWLC · 24
