Chapter 26

God’s Promise to Isaac

1

Now there was another famine in the land, subsequent to the [one]… that had occurred in Abraham’s time. And Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines at Gerar.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤓𐤏𐤁 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤌𐤋𐤁𐤃 𐤄𐤓𐤏𐤁 𐤄𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤅𐤍 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌 𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤉 𐤉𐤑𐤇𐤒 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤂𐤓𐤓𐤄

וַיְהִ֤י רָעָב֙ בָּאָ֔רֶץ מִלְּבַד֙ הָרָעָ֣ב הָרִאשׁ֔וֹן אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָיָ֖ה אַבְרָהָ֑ם בִּימֵ֣י יִצְחָ֛ק וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ אֶל־ אֲבִימֶּ֥לֶךְ מֶֽלֶךְ־ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים גְּרָֽרָה׃ way·hî rā·‘āḇ bā·’ā·reṣ mil·lə·ḇaḏ hā·rā·‘āḇ hā·ri·šō·wn ’ă·šer hā·yāh ’aḇ·rā·hām bî·mê yiṣ·ḥāq way·yê·leḵ ’el- ʾă·ḇīm·mɛ·lɛḵ me·leḵ- pə·liš·tîm gə·rā·rāhWLC · 1

The LORD appeared to [Isaac] and said, “Do not go down to Egypt. Settle in the land where I tell you…

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤕𐤓𐤃 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤌𐤄 𐤔𐤊𐤍 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤊

יְהוָ֔ה וַיֵּרָ֤א אֵלָיו֙ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אַל־ תֵּרֵ֣ד מִצְרָ֑יְמָה שְׁכֹ֣ן בָּאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֖ר אֹמַ֥ר אֵלֶֽיךָ׃ Yah·weh way·yê·rā ’ê·lāw way·yō·mer ’al- tê·rêḏ miṣ·rā·yə·māh šə·ḵōn bā·’ā·reṣ ’ă·šer ’ō·mar ’ê·le·ḵāWLC · 2

Stay in this land {as a foreigner}, and I will be with you and bless you. For I will give all these lands to you and your offspring, and I will confirm the oath that I swore to your father Abraham.

גּ֚וּר הַזֹּ֔את בָּאָ֣רֶץ וְאֶֽהְיֶ֥ה עִמְּךָ֖ וַאֲבָרְכֶ֑ךָּ כִּֽי־ אֶתֵּן֙ אֶת־ כָּל־ הָאֵ֔ל הָֽאֲרָצֹ֣ת לְךָ֣ וּֽלְזַרְעֲךָ֗ וַהֲקִֽמֹתִי֙ אֶת־ הַשְּׁבֻעָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִשְׁבַּ֖עְתִּי אָבִֽיךָ׃ לְאַבְרָהָ֥ם gūr haz·zōṯ bā·’ā·reṣ wə·’eh·yeh ‘im·mə·ḵā wa·’ă·ḇā·rə·ḵe·kā kî- ’et·tên ’eṯ- kāl- hā·’êl hā·’ă·rā·ṣōṯ lə·ḵā ū·lə·zar·‘ă·ḵā wa·hă·qi·mō·ṯî ’eṯ- haš·šə·ḇu·‘āh ’ă·šer niš·ba‘·tî ’ā·ḇî·ḵā lə·’aḇ·rā·hāmWLC · 3

I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky, and I will give [them] all these lands, and through your offspring all nations of the earth will be blessed,

𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤊 𐤅𐤄𐤓𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤊𐤅𐤊𐤁𐤉 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤋𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤕 𐤁𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤊 𐤊𐤋 𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤉 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤅𐤄𐤕𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤅

זַרְעֲךָ֙ וְהִרְבֵּיתִ֤י אֶֽת־ כְּכוֹכְבֵ֣י הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וְנָתַתִּ֣י לְזַרְעֲךָ֔ אֵ֥ת כָּל־ הָאֵ֑ל הָאֲרָצֹ֖ת בְזַרְעֲךָ֔ כֹּ֖ל גּוֹיֵ֥י הָאָֽרֶץ׃ וְהִתְבָּרֲכ֣וּ zar·‘ă·ḵā wə·hir·bê·ṯî ’eṯ- kə·ḵō·wḵ·ḇê haš·šā·ma·yim wə·nā·ṯat·tî lə·zar·‘ă·ḵā ’êṯ kāl- hā·’êl hā·’ă·rā·ṣōṯ ḇə·zar·‘ă·ḵā kōl gō·w·yê hā·’ā·reṣ wə·hiṯ·bā·ră·ḵūWLC · 4

because Abraham listened to My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.”

עֵ֕קֶב אֲשֶׁר־ אַבְרָהָ֖ם שָׁמַ֥ע בְּקֹלִ֑י וַיִּשְׁמֹר֙ מִשְׁמַרְתִּ֔י מִצְוֺתַ֖י חֻקּוֹתַ֥י וְתוֹרֹתָֽי׃ ‘ê·qeḇ ’ă·šer- ’aḇ·rā·hām šā·ma‘ bə·qō·lî way·yiš·mōr miš·mar·tî miṣ·wō·ṯay ḥuq·qō·w·ṯay wə·ṯō·w·rō·ṯāyWLC · 5

Isaac Deceives Abimelech

So Isaac settled in Gerar.

יִצְחָ֖ק וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב בִּגְרָֽר׃ yiṣ·ḥāq way·yê·šeḇ biḡ·rārWLC · 6

But when the men of that place asked about his wife, he said, “She is my sister.” For he was afraid to say, “[She is] my wife,” since he thought to himself, “The men of this place will kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is so beautiful…”

אַנְשֵׁ֤י הַמָּקוֹם֙ וַֽיִּשְׁאֲל֞וּ לְאִשְׁתּ֔וֹ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר הִ֑וא אֲחֹ֣תִי כִּ֤י יָרֵא֙ לֵאמֹ֣ר אִשְׁתִּ֔י פֶּן־ אַנְשֵׁ֤י הַמָּקוֹם֙ יַֽהַרְגֻ֜נִי עַל־ רִבְקָ֔ה כִּֽי־ הִֽיא׃ טוֹבַ֥ת מַרְאֶ֖ה ’an·šê ham·mā·qō·wm way·yiš·’ă·lū lə·’iš·tōw way·yō·mer hî ’ă·ḥō·ṯî kî yā·rê lê·mōr ’iš·tî pen- ’an·šê ham·mā·qō·wm ya·har·ḡu·nî ‘al- riḇ·qāh kî- hî ṭō·w·ḇaṯ mar·’ehWLC · 7

  • When… [Isaac] had been there a long time, Abimelech king of the Philistines looked down from the window and was surprised to see… Isaac caressing… his wife Rebekah.

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤓𐤊𐤅 𐤋𐤅 𐤔𐤌 𐤄𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤒𐤐 𐤁𐤏𐤃 𐤄𐤇𐤋𐤅𐤍 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤉𐤑𐤇𐤒 𐤌𐤑𐤇𐤒 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 𐤓𐤁𐤒𐤄

וַיְהִ֗י כִּ֣י אָֽרְכוּ־ ל֥וֹ שָׁם֙ הַיָּמִ֔ים אֲבִימֶ֙לֶךְ֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַיַּשְׁקֵ֗ף בְּעַ֖ד הַֽחַלּ֑וֹן וַיַּ֗רְא וְהִנֵּ֤ה יִצְחָק֙ מְצַחֵ֔ק אֵ֖ת אִשְׁתּֽוֹ׃ רִבְקָ֥ה way·hî kî ’ā·rə·ḵū- lōw šām hay·yā·mîm ’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ me·leḵ pə·liš·tîm way·yaš·qêp̄ bə·‘aḏ ha·ḥal·lō·wn way·yar wə·hin·nêh yiṣ·ḥāq mə·ṣa·ḥêq ’êṯ ’iš·tōw riḇ·qāhWLC · 8

Abimelech sent for Isaac and said, “So she is really… your wife! How could you say, ‘She is my sister’?” Isaac replied,… “Because I thought I might die on account of her.”

𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤋𐤉𐤑𐤇𐤒 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤊 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤀𐤇𐤕𐤉 𐤉𐤑𐤇𐤒 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤐𐤍 𐤀𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤄

אֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ וַיִּקְרָ֨א לְיִצְחָ֗ק וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הִ֔וא אַ֣ךְ הִנֵּ֤ה אִשְׁתְּךָ֙ וְאֵ֥יךְ אָמַ֖רְתָּ הִ֑וא אֲחֹ֣תִי יִצְחָ֔ק וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ כִּ֣י אָמַ֔רְתִּי פֶּן־ אָמ֖וּת עָלֶֽיהָ׃ ’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ way·yiq·rā lə·yiṣ·ḥāq way·yō·mer hî ’aḵ hin·nêh ’iš·tə·ḵā wə·’êḵ ’ā·mar·tā hî ’ă·ḥō·ṯî yiṣ·ḥāq way·yō·mer ’ê·lāw kî ’ā·mar·tî pen- ’ā·mūṯ ‘ā·le·hāWLC · 9

“What is this you have done to us?” asked Abimelech. “One of the people could easily have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”

מַה־ זֹּ֖את עָשִׂ֣יתָ לָּ֑נוּ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ אַחַ֤ד הָעָם֙ אֶת־ כִּ֠מְעַט שָׁכַ֞ב אִשְׁתֶּ֔ךָ וְהֵבֵאתָ֥ אָשָֽׁם׃ עָלֵ֖ינוּ mah- zōṯ ‘ā·śî·ṯā lā·nū way·yō·mer ’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ ’a·ḥaḏ hā·‘ām ’eṯ- kim·‘aṭ šā·ḵaḇ ’iš·te·ḵā wə·hê·ḇê·ṯā ’ā·šām ‘ā·lê·nūWLC · 10

So Abimelech warned all the people, saying, “Whoever harms this man or his wife will surely be put to death…”

𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤑𐤅 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤄𐤍𐤂𐤏 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤁𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤅 𐤌𐤅𐤕 𐤉𐤅𐤌𐤕

אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ אֶת־ וַיְצַ֣ו כָּל־ הָעָ֖ם לֵאמֹ֑ר הַנֹּגֵ֜עַ הַזֶּ֛ה בָּאִ֥ישׁ וּבְאִשְׁתּ֖וֹ מ֥וֹת יוּמָֽת׃ ’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ ’eṯ- way·ṣaw kāl- hā·‘ām lê·mōr han·nō·ḡê·a‘ haz·zeh bā·’îš ū·ḇə·’iš·tōw mō·wṯ yū·māṯWLC · 11

Isaac’s Prosperity

Now Isaac sowed seed in the land, and that very year he reaped a hundredfold… And the LORD blessed him,

𐤉𐤑𐤇𐤒 𐤅𐤉𐤆𐤓𐤏 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤄𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤁𐤔𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤀 𐤌𐤀𐤄 𐤔𐤏𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤓𐤊𐤄𐤅

יִצְחָק֙ וַיִּזְרַ֤ע הַהִ֔וא בָּאָ֣רֶץ הַהִ֖וא בַּשָּׁנָ֥ה וַיִּמְצָ֛א מֵאָ֣ה שְׁעָרִ֑ים יְהוָֽה׃ וַֽיְבָרֲכֵ֖הוּ yiṣ·ḥāq way·yiz·ra‘ ha·hi·w bā·’ā·reṣ ha·hi·w baš·šā·nāh way·yim·ṣā mê·’āh šə·‘ā·rîm Yah·weh way·ḇā·ră·ḵê·hūWLC · 12

and [he] became richer and richer vvv…, until… he was exceedingly wealthy.

𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤃𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤄𐤋𐤅𐤊 𐤏𐤃 𐤊𐤉 𐤂𐤃𐤋 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤅𐤂𐤃𐤋

הָאִ֑ישׁ וַיִּגְדַּ֖ל וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ הָלוֹךְ֙ עַ֥ד כִּֽי־ גָדַ֖ל מְאֹֽד׃ וְגָדֵ֔ל hā·’îš way·yiḡ·dal way·yê·leḵ hā·lō·wḵ ‘aḏ kî- ḡā·ḏal mə·’ōḏ wə·ḡā·ḏêlWLC · 13

He owned so many flocks… and herds… and servants that the Philistines envied him. -

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤋𐤅 𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤑𐤀𐤍 𐤅𐤌𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤒𐤓 𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤅𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤄 𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤍𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤕𐤅

וַֽיְהִי־ ל֤וֹ מִקְנֵה־ צֹאן֙ וּמִקְנֵ֣ה בָקָ֔ר רַבָּ֑ה וַעֲבֻדָּ֖ה פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ וַיְקַנְא֥וּ אֹת֖וֹ way·hî- lōw miq·nêh- ṣōn ū·miq·nêh ḇā·qār rab·bāh wa·‘ă·ḇud·dāh pə·liš·tîm way·qan·’ū ’ō·ṯōwWLC · 14

So the Philistines took dirt and stopped up all the wells that his father’s servants had dug in the days of his father Abraham.

𐤐𐤋𐤔𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤅𐤌 𐤏𐤐𐤓 𐤎𐤕𐤌𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤅 𐤏𐤁𐤃𐤉 𐤇𐤐𐤓𐤅 𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤅 𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤄𐤌

פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַיְמַלְא֖וּם עָפָֽר׃ סִתְּמ֣וּם וְכָל־ הַבְּאֵרֹ֗ת אֲשֶׁ֤ר אָבִ֔יו עַבְדֵ֣י חָֽפְרוּ֙ בִּימֵ֖י אָבִ֑יו אַבְרָהָ֣ם pə·liš·tîm way·mal·’ūm ‘ā·p̄ār sit·tə·mūm wə·ḵāl hab·bə·’ê·rōṯ ’ă·šer ’ā·ḇîw ‘aḇ·ḏê ḥā·p̄ə·rū bî·mê ’ā·ḇîw ’aḇ·rā·hāmWLC · 15

Then Abimelech said to Isaac, “Depart from us, for you are much too powerful for us.”

𐤀𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤑𐤇𐤒 𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤏𐤌𐤍𐤅 𐤊𐤉 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤏𐤑𐤌𐤕 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤅

אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֶל־ יִצְחָ֑ק לֵ֚ךְ מֵֽעִמָּ֔נוּ כִּֽי־ מְאֹֽד׃ עָצַֽמְתָּ־ מִמֶּ֖נּוּ ’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ way·yō·mer ’el- yiṣ·ḥāq lêḵ mê·‘im·mā·nū kî- mə·’ōḏ ‘ā·ṣam·tā- mim·men·nūWLC · 16

So Isaac left that place and encamped in the Valley of Gerar and settled there.

𐤉𐤑𐤇𐤒 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤔𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤇𐤍 𐤁𐤍𐤇𐤋 𐤂𐤓𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤔𐤌

יִצְחָ֑ק וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ מִשָּׁ֖ם וַיִּ֥חַן בְּנַֽחַל־ גְּרָ֖ר וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב שָֽׁם׃ yiṣ·ḥāq way·yê·leḵ miš·šām way·yi·ḥan bə·na·ḥal- gə·rār way·yê·šeḇ šāmWLC · 17

Isaac reopened… the wells… that had been dug in the days of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died. And he gave [these wells] the same names… his father had given them.

Then Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and found a well of fresh water there.

יִצְחָ֖ק עַבְדֵֽי־ וַיַּחְפְּר֥וּ בַּנָּ֑חַל וַיִּ֨מְצְאוּ־ בְּאֵ֖ר חַיִּֽים׃ מַ֥יִם שָׁ֔ם yiṣ·ḥāq ‘aḇ·ḏê- way·yaḥ·pə·rū ban·nā·ḥal way·yim·ṣə·’ū- bə·’êr ḥay·yîm ma·yim šāmWLC · 19

But the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s herdsmen and said “The water is ours!” So he named… the well Esek, because they contended with him.

רֹעֵ֣י גְרָ֗ר וַיָּרִ֜יבוּ עִם־ יִצְחָ֛ק רֹעֵ֥י לֵאמֹ֖ר לָ֣נוּ הַמָּ֑יִם וַיִּקְרָ֤א שֵֽׁם־ הַבְּאֵר֙ עֵ֔שֶׂק כִּ֥י הִֽתְעַשְּׂק֖וּ עִמּֽוֹ׃ rō·‘ê ḡə·rār way·yā·rî·ḇū ‘im- yiṣ·ḥāq rō·‘ê lê·mōr lā·nū ham·mā·yim way·yiq·rā šêm- hab·bə·’êr ‘ê·śeq kî hiṯ·‘aś·śə·qū ‘im·mōwWLC · 20

Then they dug another well and quarreled over that one {also}; so he named it Sitnah.

He moved on from there and dug… another [well], and they did not quarrel over it. He named it Rehoboth and said, “At last… the LORD has made room for us, and we will be fruitful in the land.”

From there [Isaac] went up to Beersheba,

מִשָּׁ֖ם בְּאֵ֥ר וַיַּ֥עַל שָֽׁבַע׃ miš·šām bə·’êr way·ya·‘al šā·ḇa‘WLC · 23

and that night the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for the sake of My servant Abraham.”

So [Isaac] built an altar there and called on the name of the LORD, and he pitched his tent there. [His] servants also dug a well there.

Isaac’s Covenant with Abimelech

Later, Abimelech came to [Isaac] from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his adviser and Phicol the commander of his army.

וַאֲבִימֶ֕לֶךְ הָלַ֥ךְ אֵלָ֖יו מִגְּרָ֑ר וַאֲחֻזַּת֙ מֵֽרֵעֵ֔הוּ וּפִיכֹ֖ל שַׂר־ צְבָאֽוֹ׃ wa·’ă·ḇî·me·leḵ hā·laḵ ’ê·lāw mig·gə·rār wa·’ă·ḥuz·zaṯ mê·rê·‘ê·hū ū·p̄î·ḵōl śar- ṣə·ḇā·’ōwWLC · 26

“Why have you come to me?” Isaac asked them. “You hated me and sent me away…”

מַדּ֖וּעַ בָּאתֶ֣ם אֵלָ֑י יִצְחָ֔ק וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵהֶם֙ וְאַתֶּם֙ שְׂנֵאתֶ֣ם אֹתִ֔י וַתְּשַׁלְּח֖וּנִי מֵאִתְּכֶֽם׃ mad·dū·a‘ bā·ṯem ’ê·lāy yiṣ·ḥāq way·yō·mer ’ă·lê·hem wə·’at·tem śə·nê·ṯem ’ō·ṯî wat·tə·šal·lə·ḥū·nî mê·’it·tə·ḵemWLC · 27

“We can plainly see… that the LORD has been with you,” they replied. “We recommend that there should now be… an oath between us and you. Let us make a covenant with you

רָא֣וֹ רָאִינוּ֮ כִּֽי־ יְהוָ֣ה׀ הָיָ֣ה עִמָּךְ֒ וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ וַנֹּ֗אמֶר תְּהִ֨י נָ֥א אָלָ֛ה בֵּינוֹתֵ֖ינוּ בֵּינֵ֣ינוּ וּבֵינֶ֑ךָ וְנִכְרְתָ֥ה בְרִ֖ית עִמָּֽךְ׃ rā·’ōw rā·’î·nū kî- Yah·weh hā·yāh ‘im·māḵ way·yō·mə·rū wan·nō·mer tə·hî nā ’ā·lāh bê·nō·w·ṯê·nū bê·nê·nū ū·ḇê·ne·ḵā wə·niḵ·rə·ṯāh ḇə·rîṯ ‘im·māḵWLC · 28

that you will not harm us, just as we have not harmed you but have done only good to you, sending you on your way in peace. And now you are blessed by the LORD.”

אִם־ תַּעֲשֵׂ֨ה רָעָ֗ה עִמָּ֜נוּ כַּאֲשֶׁר֙ לֹ֣א נְגַֽעֲנ֔וּךָ וְכַאֲשֶׁ֨ר עָשִׂ֤ינוּ רַק־ ט֔וֹב עִמְּךָ֙ וַנְּשַׁלֵּֽחֲךָ֖ בְּשָׁל֑וֹם עַתָּ֖ה אַתָּ֥ה בְּר֥וּךְ יְהוָֽה׃ ’im- ta·ʿă·śēh rā·‘āh ‘im·mā·nū ka·’ă·šer lō nə·ḡa·‘ă·nū·ḵā wə·ḵa·’ă·šer ‘ā·śî·nū raq- ṭō·wḇ ‘im·mə·ḵā wan·nə·šal·lê·ḥă·ḵā bə·šā·lō·wm ‘at·tāh ’at·tāh bə·rūḵ Yah·wehWLC · 29

So [Isaac] prepared a feast for them, and they ate and drank.

And they got up early the next morning and swore an oath to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they left him… in peace.

  • On that same day, Isaac’s servants came and told him about… the well they had dug. “We have found water!” they told him.

וַיְהִ֣י׀ הַה֗וּא בַּיּ֣וֹם יִצְחָ֔ק עַבְדֵ֣י וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ וַיַּגִּ֣דוּ ל֔וֹ עַל־ אֹד֥וֹת הַבְּאֵ֖ר אֲשֶׁ֣ר חָפָ֑רוּ מָצָ֥אנוּ מָֽיִם׃ וַיֹּ֥אמְרוּ ל֖וֹ way·hî ha·hū bay·yō·wm yiṣ·ḥāq ‘aḇ·ḏê way·yā·ḇō·’ū way·yag·gi·ḏū lōw ‘al- ’ō·ḏō·wṯ hab·bə·’êr ’ă·šer ḥā·p̄ā·rū mā·ṣā·nū mā·yim way·yō·mə·rū lōwWLC · 32

So he called it Shibah, and to this day the name of the city vvv is Beersheba.

When Esau was forty years old…, he took as his wives Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite and Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.

And they brought grief to Isaac and Rebekah.
