Chapter 19
Lot Welcomes the Angels
1
Now the two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of [the city]. When Lot saw them, he got up to meet them, bowed facedown…,
𐤔𐤍𐤉 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀𐤅 𐤎𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤁𐤏𐤓𐤁 𐤅𐤋𐤅𐤈 𐤉𐤔𐤁 𐤁𐤔𐤏𐤓 𐤎𐤃𐤌 𐤋𐤅𐤈 𐤅𐤉𐤓𐤀 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤌 𐤋𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤕𐤇𐤅 𐤀𐤐𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤓𐤑𐤄
שְׁנֵ֨י הַמַּלְאָכִ֤ים וַ֠יָּבֹאוּ סְדֹ֙מָה֙ בָּעֶ֔רֶב וְל֖וֹט יֹשֵׁ֣ב בְּשַֽׁעַר־ סְדֹ֑ם לוֹט֙ וַיַּרְא־ וַיָּ֣קָם לִקְרָאתָ֔ם וַיִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּ אַפַּ֖יִם אָֽרְצָה׃ šə·nê ham·mal·’ā·ḵîm way·yā·ḇō·’ū sə·ḏō·māh bā·‘e·reḇ wə·lō·wṭ yō·šêḇ bə·ša·‘ar- sə·ḏōm lō·wṭ way·yar- way·yā·qām liq·rā·ṯām way·yiš·ta·ḥū ’ap·pa·yim ’ā·rə·ṣāh — WLC · 1

and said, “… My lords, please turn aside into the house of your servant; wash your feet and spend the night. Then you can rise early and go on your way.” “No,”… they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.”

וַיֹּ֜אמֶר הִנֶּ֣ה נָּא־ אֲדֹנַ֗י נָ֠א ס֣וּרוּ אֶל־ בֵּ֨ית עַבְדְּכֶ֤ם וְרַחֲצ֣וּ רַגְלֵיכֶ֔ם וְלִ֙ינוּ֙ וְהִשְׁכַּמְתֶּ֖ם וַהֲלַכְתֶּ֣ם לְדַרְכְּכֶ֑ם לֹּ֔א כִּ֥י וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ נָלִֽין׃ בָרְח֖וֹב way·yō·mer hin·neh nā- ’ă·ḏō·nay nā sū·rū ’el- bêṯ ‘aḇ·də·ḵem wə·ra·ḥă·ṣū raḡ·lê·ḵem wə·lî·nū wə·hiš·kam·tem wa·hă·laḵ·tɛm lə·ḏar·kə·ḵem lō kî way·yō·mə·rū nā·lîn ḇā·rə·ḥō·wḇ — WLC · 2

But [Lot] insisted… so strongly that they followed him vvv into his house. He prepared a feast for them and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.

וַיִּפְצַר־ בָּ֣ם מְאֹ֔ד וַיָּסֻ֣רוּ אֵלָ֔יו וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ אֶל־ בֵּית֑וֹ וַיַּ֤עַשׂ מִשְׁתֶּ֔ה לָהֶם֙ אָפָ֖ה וּמַצּ֥וֹת וַיֹּאכֵֽלוּ׃ way·yip̄·ṣar- bām mə·’ōḏ way·yā·su·rū ’ê·lāw way·yā·ḇō·’ū ’el- bê·ṯōw way·ya·‘aś miš·teh lā·hem ’ā·p̄āh ū·maṣ·ṣō·wṯ way·yō·ḵê·lū — WLC · 3

Before they had gone to bed, all… the men of the city… of Sodom, both young and old,… surrounded… the house.
𐤈𐤓𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤁𐤅 𐤊𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉 𐤎𐤃𐤌 𐤌𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤅𐤏𐤃 𐤆𐤒𐤍 𐤌𐤒𐤑𐤄 𐤍𐤎𐤁𐤅 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕
טֶרֶם֮ יִשְׁכָּבוּ֒ כָּל־ הָעָ֖ם וְאַנְשֵׁ֨י הָעִ֜יר אַנְשֵׁ֤י סְדֹם֙ מִנַּ֖עַר וְעַד־ זָקֵ֑ן מִקָּצֶֽה׃ נָסַ֣בּוּ עַל־ הַבַּ֔יִת ṭe·rem yiš·kā·ḇū kāl- hā·‘ām wə·’an·šê hā·‘îr ’an·šê sə·ḏōm min·na·‘ar wə·‘aḏ- zā·qên miq·qā·ṣeh nā·sab·bū ‘al- hab·ba·yiṯ — WLC · 4

They called out to Lot, saying “Where are the men who came to you tonight…? Send them out to us so we can have relations with them!”

וַיִּקְרְא֤וּ אֶל־ לוֹט֙ וַיֹּ֣אמְרוּ ל֔וֹ אַיֵּ֧ה הָאֲנָשִׁ֛ים אֲשֶׁר־ בָּ֥אוּ אֵלֶ֖יךָ הַלָּ֑יְלָה הוֹצִיאֵ֣ם אֵלֵ֔ינוּ וְנֵדְעָ֖ה אֹתָֽם׃ way·yiq·rə·’ū ’el- lō·wṭ way·yō·mə·rū lōw ’ay·yêh hā·’ă·nā·šîm ’ă·šer- bā·’ū ’ê·le·ḵā hal·lā·yə·lāh hō·w·ṣî·’êm ’ê·lê·nū wə·nê·ḏə·‘āh ’ō·ṯām — WLC · 5

Lot went outside to meet them, shutting the door behind him.

ל֖וֹט וַיֵּצֵ֧א הַפֶּ֑תְחָה אֲלֵהֶ֛ם סָגַ֥ר וְהַדֶּ֖לֶת אַחֲרָֽיו׃ lō·wṭ way·yê·ṣê hap·peṯ·ḥāh ’ă·lê·hem sā·ḡar wə·had·de·leṯ ’a·ḥă·rāw — WLC · 6

“Please, my brothers,” he pleaded, “don’t do such a wicked thing!

נָ֥א אַחַ֖י וַיֹּאמַ֑ר אַל־ תָּרֵֽעוּ׃ nā ’a·ḥay way·yō·mar ’al- tā·rê·‘ū — WLC · 7

Look,… I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring… them to you, and you can do to them as you please… But do not do anything to these men, for… they have come under the protection of my roof.”

הִנֵּה־ נָ֨א לִ֜י שְׁתֵּ֣י בָנ֗וֹת אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־ יָדְעוּ֙ אִ֔ישׁ אוֹצִֽיאָה־ נָּ֤א אֶתְהֶן֙ אֲלֵיכֶ֔ם וַעֲשׂ֣וּ לָהֶ֔ן כַּטּ֖וֹב בְּעֵינֵיכֶ֑ם רַ֠ק אַל־ תַּעֲשׂ֣וּ דָבָ֔ר הָאֵל֙ לָֽאֲנָשִׁ֤ים כִּֽי־ עַל־ כֵּ֥ן בָּ֖אוּ בְּצֵ֥ל קֹרָתִֽי׃ hin·nêh- nā lî šə·tê ḇā·nō·wṯ ’ă·šer lō- yā·ḏə·‘ū ’îš ’ō·w·ṣî·’āh- nā ’eṯ·hen ’ă·lê·ḵem wa·‘ă·śū lā·hen kaṭ·ṭō·wḇ bə·‘ê·nê·ḵem raq ’al- ta·‘ă·śū ḏā·ḇār hā·’êl lā·’ă·nā·šîm kî- ‘al- kên bā·’ū bə·ṣêl qō·rā·ṯî — WLC · 8

“Get out of the way…!” they replied. And they declared, “This one came here as a foreigner, and he is already acting like a judge…! Now we will treat you worse than them.” And they pressed… in on Lot… and moved in to break down the door.
𐤂𐤔 𐤄𐤋𐤀𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤄𐤀𐤇𐤃 𐤁𐤀 𐤋𐤂𐤅𐤓 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤔𐤐𐤅𐤈 𐤏𐤕𐤄 𐤍𐤓𐤏 𐤋𐤊 𐤌𐤄𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤑𐤓𐤅 𐤁𐤀𐤉𐤔 𐤁𐤋𐤅𐤈 𐤌𐤀𐤃 𐤅𐤉𐤂𐤔𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤁𐤓 𐤄𐤃𐤋𐤕
גֶּשׁ־ הָ֗לְאָה וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ׀ וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ הָאֶחָ֤ד בָּֽא־ לָגוּר֙ וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֣ט שָׁפ֔וֹט עַתָּ֕ה נָרַ֥ע לְךָ֖ מֵהֶ֑ם וַיִּפְצְר֨וּ בָאִ֤ישׁ בְּלוֹט֙ מְאֹ֔ד וַֽיִּגְּשׁ֖וּ לִשְׁבֹּ֥ר הַדָּֽלֶת׃ geš- hā·lə·’āh way·yō·mə·rū way·yō·mə·rū hā·’e·ḥāḏ bā- lā·ḡūr way·yiš·pōṭ šā·p̄ō·wṭ ‘at·tāh nā·ra‘ lə·ḵā mê·hem way·yip̄·ṣə·rū ḇā·’îš bə·lō·wṭ mə·’ōḏ way·yig·gə·šū liš·bōr had·dā·leṯ — WLC · 9

But the men [inside] reached out…, pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door.
𐤄𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤅 𐤉𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤉𐤀𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤋𐤅𐤈 𐤄𐤁𐤉𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤉𐤄𐤌 𐤎𐤂𐤓𐤅 𐤄𐤃𐤋𐤕
הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ אֶת־ וַיִּשְׁלְח֤וּ יָדָ֔ם וַיָּבִ֧יאוּ אֶת־ ל֛וֹט הַבָּ֑יְתָה וְאֶת־ אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם סָגָֽרוּ׃ הַדֶּ֖לֶת hā·’ă·nā·šîm ’eṯ- way·yiš·lə·ḥū yā·ḏām way·yā·ḇî·’ū ’eṯ- lō·wṭ hab·bā·yə·ṯāh wə·’eṯ- ’ă·lê·hem sā·ḡā·rū had·de·leṯ — WLC · 10

And they struck the men at the entrance…, young and old, with blindness, so that they wearied themselves [trying] to find the door.

וְֽאֶת־ הִכּוּ֙ הָאֲנָשִׁ֞ים אֲשֶׁר־ פֶּ֣תַח הַבַּ֗יִת מִקָּטֹ֖ן וְעַד־ גָּד֑וֹל בַּסַּנְוֵרִ֔ים וַיִּלְא֖וּ לִמְצֹ֥א הַפָּֽתַח׃ wə·’eṯ- hik·kū hā·’ă·nā·šîm ’ă·šer- pe·ṯaḥ hab·ba·yiṯ miq·qā·ṭōn wə·‘aḏ- gā·ḏō·wl bas·san·wê·rîm way·yil·’ū lim·ṣō hap·pā·ṯaḥ — WLC · 11
Lot Flees to Zoar

Then the [two] men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here— a son-in-law, your sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here,
𐤄𐤀𐤍𐤔𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤋𐤅𐤈 𐤌𐤉 𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤃 𐤐𐤄 𐤇𐤕𐤍 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤁𐤍𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤅𐤊𐤋 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤓 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤋𐤊 𐤄𐤅𐤑𐤀 𐤌𐤍 𐤄𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌
הָאֲנָשִׁ֜ים וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ אֶל־ ל֗וֹט מִֽי־ לְךָ֣ עֹ֚ד פֹ֔ה חָתָן֙ וּבָנֶ֣יךָ וּבְנֹתֶ֔יךָ וְכֹ֥ל בָּעִ֑יר אֲשֶׁר־ לְךָ֖ הוֹצֵ֖א מִן־ הַמָּקֽוֹם׃ hā·’ă·nā·šîm way·yō·mə·rū ’el- lō·wṭ mî- lə·ḵā ‘ōḏ p̄ōh ḥā·ṯān ū·ḇā·ne·ḵā ū·ḇə·nō·ṯe·ḵā wə·ḵōl bā·‘îr ’ă·šer- lə·ḵā hō·w·ṣê min- ham·mā·qō·wm — WLC · 12

because we are about to destroy this place. For the outcry to… the LORD [against its people] is so great that [He] has sent us to destroy it.”
𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤕 𐤌𐤔𐤇𐤕𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤆𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤊𐤉 𐤑𐤏𐤒𐤕𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤂𐤃𐤋𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤋𐤇𐤍𐤅 𐤋𐤔𐤇𐤕𐤄
כִּֽי־ אֲנַ֔חְנוּ אֶת־ מַשְׁחִתִ֣ים הַזֶּ֑ה הַמָּק֖וֹם כִּֽי־ צַעֲקָתָם֙ אֶת־ פְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה גָֽדְלָ֤ה יְהוָ֖ה וַיְשַׁלְּחֵ֥נוּ לְשַׁחֲתָֽהּ׃ kî- ’ă·naḥ·nū ’eṯ- maš·ḥi·ṯîm haz·zeh ham·mā·qō·wm kî- ṣa·‘ă·qā·ṯām ’eṯ- pə·nê Yah·weh ḡā·ḏə·lāh Yah·weh way·šal·lə·ḥê·nū lə·ša·ḥă·ṯāh — WLC · 13

So Lot went out and spoke to the sons-in-law who were pledged in marriage to his daughters. “Get up,” he said. “Get out of this place, for the LORD is about to destroy the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.

ל֜וֹט וַיֵּצֵ֨א וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר׀ אֶל־ חֲתָנָ֣יו׀ לֹקְחֵ֣י בְנֹתָ֗יו ק֤וּמוּ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ צְּאוּ֙ מִן־ הַזֶּ֔ה הַמָּק֣וֹם כִּֽי־ יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־ מַשְׁחִ֥ית הָעִ֑יר חֲתָנָֽיו׃ בְּעֵינֵ֥י וַיְהִ֥י כִמְצַחֵ֖ק lō·wṭ way·yê·ṣê way·ḏab·bêr ’el- ḥă·ṯā·nāw lō·qə·ḥê ḇə·nō·ṯāw qū·mū way·yō·mer ṣə·’ū min- haz·zeh ham·mā·qō·wm kî- Yah·weh ’eṯ- maš·ḥîṯ hā·‘îr ḥă·ṯā·nāw bə·‘ê·nê way·hî ḵim·ṣa·ḥêq — WLC · 14

At daybreak… the angels hurried Lot along, saying, “Get up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment of the city.”
𐤅𐤊𐤌𐤅 𐤄𐤔𐤇𐤓 𐤏𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤉𐤑𐤅 𐤁𐤋𐤅𐤈 𐤋𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤒𐤅𐤌 𐤒𐤇 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤍𐤕𐤉𐤊 𐤄𐤍𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤕 𐤐𐤍 𐤕𐤎𐤐𐤄 𐤁𐤏𐤅𐤍 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤓
וּכְמוֹ֙ הַשַּׁ֣חַר עָלָ֔ה הַמַּלְאָכִ֖ים וַיָּאִ֥יצוּ בְּל֣וֹט לֵאמֹ֑ר קוּם֩ קַ֨ח אֶֽת־ אִשְׁתְּךָ֜ וְאֶת־ שְׁתֵּ֤י בְנֹתֶ֙יךָ֙ הַנִּמְצָאֹ֔ת פֶּן־ תִּסָּפֶ֖ה בַּעֲוֺ֥ן הָעִֽיר׃ ū·ḵə·mōw haš·ša·ḥar ‘ā·lāh ham·mal·’ā·ḵîm way·yā·’î·ṣū bə·lō·wṭ lê·mōr qūm qaḥ ’eṯ- ’iš·tə·ḵā wə·’eṯ- šə·tê ḇə·nō·ṯe·ḵā han·nim·ṣā·’ōṯ pen- tis·sā·p̄eh ba·‘ă·wōn hā·‘îr — WLC · 15

But when [Lot] hesitated, the men grabbed his hand and the hands of his wife and his two daughters. And they led them safely out of the city, because of the LORD’s compassion for them.

- As soon as the men had brought them out, one of them said, “Run for your lives! Do not look back, and do not stop anywhere on the plain! Flee to the mountains, or you will be swept away!”

Your servant has indeed… found favor in your sight, and you have shown me… great kindness by sparing my life. But I cannot… run to the mountains;… the disaster will overtake me, and I will die.

Look, there [is] a town nearby where I can flee, and it is a small place. Please let me flee… there— is it not a small place? Then my life will be saved.”

“Very well,” he answered…, “I will grant this request… as well, and will not demolish the town you indicate.

Hurry! Run there quickly, for I cannot… do anything until you reach it.” That is why… the town was called… Zoar.

And by the time the sun had risen over the land, Lot had reached Zoar.

Then the LORD rained down sulfur and fire on Sodom… and Gomorrah— from the LORD out of the heavens.

Thus He destroyed these cities and the entire plain, including all the inhabitants of the cities and everything that grew on the ground.

But [Lot’s] wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

Early the next morning, Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood… before the LORD.

He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah… and all… the land of the plain, and he saw… the smoke rising from the land like smoke from a furnace.

So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, He remembered Abraham, and He brought Lot out of the catastrophe that destroyed the cities where [he] had lived…

Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains— for he was afraid to stay in Zoar— where [they]… lived in a cave.

- The next day the older [daughter] said to the younger, “Look, I slept with my father last night. Let us get him drunk with wine again tonight so you can go in [and] sleep with him and we can preserve our father’s line.”

So again that night they got their father drunk with wine, and the younger [daughter] went in and slept with him; he was not aware when she lay down or when she got up.

Thus both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.

The older [daughter] gave birth to a son and named him… Moab. He is the father of the Moabites of today.

The younger [daughter] also gave birth to a son, and she named him vvv Ben-ammi… He is the father of the Ammonites… of today.
