Chapter 16

Hagar and Ishmael

1

Now Abram’s wife Sarai had borne him no [children], but she had an Egyptian maidservant named Hagar.

𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤀𐤔𐤕 𐤅𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤄 𐤋𐤅 𐤋𐤀 𐤅𐤋𐤄 𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤔𐤐𐤇𐤄 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤄 𐤄𐤂𐤓

אַבְרָ֔ם אֵ֣שֶׁת וְשָׂרַי֙ יָלְדָ֖ה ל֑וֹ לֹ֥א וְלָ֛הּ מִצְרִ֖ית שִׁפְחָ֥ה וּשְׁמָ֥הּ הָגָֽר׃ ’aḇ·rām ’ê·šeṯ wə·śā·ray yā·lə·ḏāh lōw lō wə·lāh miṣ·rîṯ šip̄·ḥāh ū·šə·māh hā·ḡārWLC · 1

So Sarai said to Abram, “Look now, the LORD has prevented me from bearing [children]. Please go to my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤍𐤀 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤏𐤑𐤓𐤍𐤉 𐤌𐤋𐤃𐤕 𐤍𐤀 𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤐𐤇𐤕𐤉 𐤀𐤅𐤋𐤉 𐤀𐤁𐤍𐤄 𐤌𐤌𐤍𐤄 𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤋𐤒𐤅𐤋 𐤔𐤓𐤉

שָׂרַ֜י וַתֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ אַבְרָ֗ם הִנֵּה־ נָ֞א יְהוָה֙ עֲצָרַ֤נִי מִלֶּ֔דֶת נָא֙ בֹּא־ אֶל־ שִׁפְחָתִ֔י אוּלַ֥י אִבָּנֶ֖ה מִמֶּ֑נָּה אַבְרָ֖ם וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע לְק֥וֹל שָׂרָֽי׃ śā·ray wat·tō·mer ’el- ’aḇ·rām hin·nêh- nā Yah·weh ‘ă·ṣā·ra·nî mil·le·ḏeṯ nā bō- ’el- šip̄·ḥā·ṯî ’ū·lay ’ib·bā·neh mim·mɛn·nå̄h ’aḇ·rām way·yiš·ma‘ lə·qō·wl śā·rāyWLC · 2

So after [he] had lived vvv in Canaan for ten years, [his] wife Sarai took her Egyptian maidservant Hagar and gave her to Abram to be his wife.

𐤌𐤒𐤑 𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤋𐤔𐤁𐤕 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤑 𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍 𐤏𐤔𐤓 𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤀𐤔𐤕 𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤒𐤇 𐤄𐤌𐤑𐤓𐤉𐤕 𐤔𐤐𐤇𐤕𐤄 𐤄𐤂𐤓 𐤅𐤕𐤕𐤍 𐤀𐤕𐤄 𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤀𐤉𐤔𐤄 𐤋𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤔𐤄

מִקֵּץ֙ אַבְרָ֖ם לְשֶׁ֥בֶת בְּאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנָ֑עַן עֶ֣שֶׂר שָׁנִ֔ים אַבְרָ֗ם אֶת־ אֵֽשֶׁת־ שָׂרַ֣י וַתִּקַּ֞ח הַמִּצְרִית֙ שִׁפְחָתָ֔הּ הָגָ֤ר וַתִּתֵּ֥ן אֹתָ֛הּ לְאַבְרָ֥ם אִישָׁ֖הּ ל֥וֹ לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ miq·qêṣ ’aḇ·rām lə·še·ḇeṯ bə·’e·reṣ kə·nā·‘an ‘e·śer šā·nîm ’aḇ·rām ’eṯ- ’ê·šeṯ- śā·ray wat·tiq·qaḥ ham·miṣ·rîṯ šip̄·ḥā·ṯāh hā·ḡār wat·tit·tên ’ō·ṯāh lə·’aḇ·rām ’î·šāh lōw lə·’iš·šāhWLC · 3

And he slept with… Hagar, and she conceived. But when [Hagar] realized that she was pregnant, she began to despise… her mistress.

𐤅𐤉𐤁𐤀 𐤀𐤋 𐤄𐤂𐤓 𐤅𐤕𐤄𐤓 𐤅𐤕𐤓𐤀 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤓𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤒𐤋 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤂𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤄

וַיָּבֹ֥א אֶל־ הָגָ֖ר וַתַּ֑הַר וַתֵּ֙רֶא֙ כִּ֣י הָרָ֔תָה וַתֵּקַ֥ל בְּעֵינֶֽיהָ׃ גְּבִרְתָּ֖הּ way·yā·ḇō ’el- hā·ḡār wat·ta·har wat·tê·re kî hā·rā·ṯāh wat·tê·qal bə·‘ê·ne·hā gə·ḇir·tāhWLC · 4

Then Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me [be] upon you! I delivered my servant into your arms, and ever since she saw that she was pregnant, she has treated me with contempt… May the LORD judge between you and me…”

𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤇𐤌𐤎𐤉 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤊 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤍𐤕𐤕𐤉 𐤔𐤐𐤇𐤕𐤉 𐤁𐤇𐤉𐤒𐤊 𐤅𐤕𐤓𐤀 𐤊𐤉 𐤄𐤓𐤕𐤄 𐤅𐤀𐤒𐤋 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤄 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤉𐤔𐤐𐤈 𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤉 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊

שָׂרַ֣י וַתֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־ אַבְרָם֮ חֲמָסִ֣י עָלֶיךָ֒ אָנֹכִ֗י נָתַ֤תִּי שִׁפְחָתִי֙ בְּחֵיקֶ֔ךָ וַתֵּ֙רֶא֙ כִּ֣י הָרָ֔תָה וָאֵקַ֖ל בְּעֵינֶ֑יהָ יְהוָ֖ה יִשְׁפֹּ֥ט בֵּינִ֥י וּבֵינֶֽיׄךָ׃ śā·ray wat·tō·mer ’el- ’aḇ·rām ḥă·mā·sî ‘ā·le·ḵā ’ā·nō·ḵî nā·ṯat·tî šip̄·ḥā·ṯî bə·ḥê·qe·ḵā wat·tê·re kî hā·rā·ṯāh wā·’ê·qal bə·‘ê·ne·hā Yah·weh yiš·pōṭ bê·nî ū·ḇē·nɛ·ḵå̄WLC · 5

“Here,” said Abram -, “your servant is in your hands. Do whatever you want with her.” Then Sarai treated [Hagar] so harshly that she fled from her.

𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤔𐤐𐤇𐤕𐤊 𐤁𐤉𐤃𐤊 𐤏𐤔𐤉 𐤄𐤈𐤅𐤁 𐤁𐤏𐤉𐤍𐤉𐤊 𐤋𐤄 𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤏𐤍𐤄 𐤅𐤕𐤁𐤓𐤇 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤄

הִנֵּ֤ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אַבְרָ֜ם אֶל־ שָׂרַ֗י שִׁפְחָתֵךְ֙ בְּיָדֵ֔ךְ עֲשִׂי־ הַטּ֣וֹב בְּעֵינָ֑יִךְ לָ֖הּ שָׂרַ֔י וַתְּעַנֶּ֣הָ וַתִּבְרַ֖ח מִפָּנֶֽיהָ׃ hin·nêh way·yō·mer ’aḇ·rām ’el- śā·ray šip̄·ḥā·ṯêḵ bə·yā·ḏêḵ ‘ă·śî- haṭ·ṭō·wḇ bə·‘ê·nā·yiḵ lāh śā·ray wat·tə·‘an·ne·hā wat·tiḇ·raḥ mip·pā·ne·hāWLC · 6

Now the angel of the LORD found [Hagar] by a spring of water in the desert—… the spring along the road to Shur.

𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤌𐤑𐤀𐤄 𐤏𐤋 𐤏𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤁𐤌𐤃𐤁𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤏𐤉𐤍 𐤁𐤃𐤓𐤊 𐤔𐤅𐤓

מַלְאַ֧ךְ יְהוָ֛ה וַֽיִּמְצָאָ֞הּ עַל־ עֵ֥ין הַמַּ֖יִם בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר עַל־ הָעַ֖יִן בְּדֶ֥רֶךְ שֽׁוּר׃ mal·’aḵ Yah·weh way·yim·ṣā·’āh ‘al- ‘ên ham·ma·yim bam·miḏ·bār ‘al- hā·‘a·yin bə·ḏe·reḵ šūrWLC · 7

Hagar, servant of Sarai,” he said, “where… have you come from, and where are you going?” “I am running away from my mistress Sarai,” she replied.

𐤄𐤂𐤓 𐤔𐤐𐤇𐤕 𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤉 𐤌𐤆𐤄 𐤁𐤀𐤕 𐤅𐤀𐤍𐤄 𐤕𐤋𐤊𐤉 𐤀𐤍𐤊𐤉 𐤁𐤓𐤇𐤕 𐤌𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤂𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤉 𐤔𐤓𐤉 𐤅𐤕𐤀𐤌𐤓

הָגָ֞ר שִׁפְחַ֥ת שָׂרַ֛י וַיֹּאמַ֗ר אֵֽי־ מִזֶּ֥ה בָ֖את וְאָ֣נָה תֵלֵ֑כִי אָנֹכִ֖י בֹּרַֽחַת׃ מִפְּנֵי֙ גְּבִרְתִּ֔י שָׂרַ֣י וַתֹּ֕אמֶר hā·ḡār šip̄·ḥaṯ śā·ray way·yō·mar ’ê- miz·zeh ḇāṯ wə·’ā·nāh ṯê·lê·ḵî ’ā·nō·ḵî bō·ra·ḥaṯ mip·pə·nê gə·ḇir·tî śā·ray wat·tō·merWLC · 8

So the angel of the LORD told her, “Return to your mistress and submit to her authority…”

𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤄 𐤔𐤅𐤁𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤂𐤁𐤓𐤕𐤊 𐤅𐤄𐤕𐤏𐤍𐤉 𐤕𐤇𐤕 𐤉𐤃𐤉𐤄

מַלְאַ֣ךְ יְהוָ֔ה וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לָהּ֙ שׁ֖וּבִי אֶל־ גְּבִרְתֵּ֑ךְ וְהִתְעַנִּ֖י תַּ֥חַת יָדֶֽיהָ׃ mal·’aḵ Yah·weh way·yō·mer lāh šū·ḇî ’el- gə·ḇir·têḵ wə·hiṯ·‘an·nî ta·ḥaṯ yā·ḏe·hāWLC · 9

Then the angel… added “I will greatly multiply… your offspring so that they will be too numerous to count.”

𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤆𐤓𐤏𐤊 𐤅𐤋𐤀 𐤌𐤓𐤁 𐤉𐤎𐤐𐤓

מַלְאַ֣ךְ יְהוָ֔ה וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לָהּ֙ הַרְבָּ֥ה אַרְבֶּ֖ה אֶת־ זַרְעֵ֑ךְ וְלֹ֥א מֵרֹֽב׃ יִסָּפֵ֖ר mal·’aḵ Yah·weh way·yō·mer lāh har·bāh ’ar·beh ’eṯ- zar·‘êḵ wə·lō mê·rōḇ yis·sā·p̄êrWLC · 10

The angel of the LORD proceeded…: “Behold, you have conceived and will bear a son. And you shall name him… Ishmael, for the LORD… has heard your cry of affliction.

𐤌𐤋𐤀𐤊 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤋𐤄 𐤄𐤍𐤊 𐤄𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤕 𐤁𐤍 𐤅𐤒𐤓𐤀𐤕 𐤔𐤌𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤀𐤋 𐤊𐤉 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤔𐤌𐤏 𐤏𐤍𐤉𐤊

מַלְאַ֣ךְ יְהוָ֔ה וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לָהּ֙ הִנָּ֥ךְ הָרָ֖ה וְיֹלַ֣דְתְּ בֵּ֑ן וְקָרָ֤את שְׁמוֹ֙ יִשְׁמָעֵ֔אל כִּֽי־ יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־ שָׁמַ֥ע עָנְיֵֽךְ׃ mal·’aḵ Yah·weh way·yō·mer lāh hin·nāḵ hā·rāh wə·yō·laḏt bên wə·qā·rāṯ šə·mōw yiš·mā·‘êl kî- Yah·weh ’el- šā·ma‘ ‘ā·nə·yêḵWLC · 11

He will be a wild donkey [of a] man, and his hand will be against everyone, and everyone’s hand against him; he will live in hostility toward all his brothers.”

𐤅𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤉𐤄𐤉𐤄 𐤐𐤓𐤀 𐤀𐤃𐤌 𐤉𐤃𐤅 𐤁𐤊𐤋 𐤊𐤋 𐤅𐤉𐤃 𐤁𐤅 𐤉𐤔𐤊𐤍 𐤅𐤏𐤋 𐤐𐤍𐤉 𐤊𐤋 𐤀𐤇𐤉𐤅

וְה֤וּא יִהְיֶה֙ פֶּ֣רֶא אָדָ֔ם יָד֣וֹ בַכֹּ֔ל כֹּ֖ל וְיַ֥ד בּ֑וֹ יִשְׁכֹּֽן׃ וְעַל־ פְּנֵ֥י כָל־ אֶחָ֖יו wə·hū yih·yeh pe·re ’ā·ḏām yā·ḏōw ḇak·kōl kōl wə·yaḏ bōw yiš·kōn wə·‘al- pə·nê ḵāl ’e·ḥāwWLC · 12

So [Hagar] gave this name to the LORD who had spoken to her: “You are the God who sees me, for she said, “Here I have seen… the One who sees me!”

וַתִּקְרָ֤א שֵׁם־ יְהוָה֙ הַדֹּבֵ֣ר אֵלֶ֔יהָ אַתָּ֖ה אֵ֣ל רֳאִ֑י כִּ֣י אָֽמְרָ֗ה הֲלֹ֛ם הֲגַ֥ם רָאִ֖יתִי אַחֲרֵ֥י רֹאִֽי׃ wat·tiq·rā šêm- Yah·weh had·dō·ḇêr ’ê·le·hā ’at·tāh ’êl ro·’î kî ’ā·mə·rāh hă·lōm hă·ḡam rā·’î·ṯî ’a·ḥă·rê rō·’îWLC · 13

Therefore… the well was called vvv vvv Beer-lahai-roi. It is located between Kadesh… and Bered.

𐤏𐤋 𐤊𐤍 𐤋𐤁𐤀𐤓 𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤁𐤀𐤓 𐤋𐤇𐤉 𐤓𐤀𐤉 𐤄𐤍𐤄 𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤒𐤃𐤔 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤁𐤓𐤃

עַל־ כֵּן֙ לַבְּאֵ֔ר קָרָ֣א בְּאֵ֥ר לַחַ֖י רֹאִ֑י הִנֵּ֥ה בֵין־ קָדֵ֖שׁ וּבֵ֥ין בָּֽרֶד׃ ‘al- kên lab·bə·’êr qā·rā bə·’êr la·ḥay rō·’î hin·nêh ḇên- qā·ḏêš ū·ḇên bā·reḏWLC · 14

And Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son [she] had borne.

𐤄𐤂𐤓 𐤅𐤕𐤋𐤃 𐤋𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤁𐤍 𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤒𐤓𐤀 𐤔𐤌 𐤉𐤔𐤌𐤏𐤀𐤋 𐤁𐤍𐤅 𐤀𐤔𐤓 𐤄𐤂𐤓 𐤉𐤋𐤃𐤄

הָגָ֛ר וַתֵּ֧לֶד לְאַבְרָ֖ם בֵּ֑ן אַבְרָ֧ם וַיִּקְרָ֨א שֶׁם־ יִשְׁמָעֵֽאל׃ בְּנ֛וֹ אֲשֶׁר־ הָגָ֖ר יָלְדָ֥ה hā·ḡār wat·tê·leḏ lə·’aḇ·rām bên ’aḇ·rām way·yiq·rā šem- yiš·mā·‘êl bə·nōw ’ă·šer- hā·ḡār yā·lə·ḏāhWLC · 15

Abram was eighty-six… years old… when Hagar bore Ishmael to him.

וְאַבְרָ֕ם שְׁמֹנִ֥ים וְשֵׁ֣שׁ שָׁנִ֑ים בֶּן־ שָׁנָ֖ה הָגָ֥ר אֶת־ בְּלֶֽדֶת־ יִשְׁמָעֵ֖אל לְאַבְרָֽם׃ס wə·’aḇ·rām šə·mō·nîm wə·šêš šā·nîm ben- šā·nāh hā·ḡār ’eṯ- bə·le·ḏeṯ- yiš·mā·‘êl lə·’aḇ·rāmWLC · 16
