Chapter 14

The War of the Kings

  • In those days Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim

𐤅𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤁𐤉𐤌𐤉 𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤐𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤔𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤅𐤊 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤋𐤎𐤓 𐤊𐤃𐤓𐤋𐤏𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤉𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤃𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌

וַיְהִ֗י בִּימֵי֙ אַמְרָפֶ֣ל מֶֽלֶךְ־ שִׁנְעָ֔ר אַרְי֖וֹךְ מֶ֣לֶךְ אֶלָּסָ֑ר כְּדָרְלָעֹ֙מֶר֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ עֵילָ֔ם וְתִדְעָ֖ל מֶ֥לֶךְ גּוֹיִֽם׃ way·hî bî·mê ’am·rā·p̄el me·leḵ- šin·‘ār ’ar·yō·wḵ me·leḵ ’el·lā·sār kə·ḏā·rə·lā·‘ō·mer me·leḵ ‘ê·lām wə·ṯiḏ·‘āl me·leḵ gō·w·yimWLC · 1

went to war against Bera king of Sodom,… Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).

𐤏𐤔𐤅 𐤌𐤋𐤇𐤌𐤄 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤓𐤏 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤎𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤓𐤔𐤏 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤌𐤓𐤄 𐤔𐤍𐤀𐤁 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤃𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤔𐤌𐤀𐤁𐤓 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤑𐤁𐤉𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤁𐤋𐤏 𐤄𐤉𐤀 𐤑𐤏𐤓

עָשׂ֣וּ מִלְחָמָ֗ה אֶת־ בֶּ֙רַע֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ סְדֹ֔ם וְאֶת־ בִּרְשַׁ֖ע מֶ֣לֶךְ עֲמֹרָ֑ה שִׁנְאָ֣ב׀ מֶ֣לֶךְ אַדְמָ֗ה וְשֶׁמְאֵ֙בֶר֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ צְבֹיִים וּמֶ֥לֶךְ בֶּ֖לַע הִיא־ צֹֽעַר׃ ‘ā·śū mil·ḥā·māh ’eṯ- be·ra‘ me·leḵ sə·ḏōm wə·’eṯ- bir·ša‘ me·leḵ ‘ă·mō·rāh šin·’āḇ me·leḵ ’aḏ·māh wə·šem·’ê·ḇer me·leḵ ṣə·ḇō·yīm ū·me·leḵ be·la‘ hî- ṣō·‘arWLC · 2

The latter [five] came as allies to the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Salt Sea

𐤀𐤋𐤄 𐤊𐤋 𐤇𐤁𐤓𐤅 𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤌𐤒 𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤄𐤅𐤀 𐤄𐤌𐤋𐤇 𐤉𐤌

אֵ֙לֶּה֙ כָּל־ חָֽבְר֔וּ אֶל־ עֵ֖מֶק הַשִּׂדִּ֑ים ה֖וּא הַמֶּֽלַח׃ יָ֥ם ’êl·leh kāl- ḥā·ḇə·rū ’el- ‘ê·meq haś·śid·dîm hū ham·me·laḥ yāmWLC · 3

For twelve… years they had been subject to Chedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth… year they rebelled.

שְׁתֵּ֤ים עֶשְׂרֵה֙ שָׁנָ֔ה עָבְד֖וּ אֶת־ כְּדָרְלָעֹ֑מֶר וּשְׁלֹשׁ־ עֶשְׂרֵ֥ה שָׁנָ֖ה מָרָֽדוּ׃ šə·têm ‘eś·rêh šā·nāh ‘ā·ḇə·ḏū ’eṯ- kə·ḏā·rə·lā·‘ō·mer ū·šə·lōš- ‘eś·rêh šā·nāh mā·rā·ḏūWLC · 4

In the fourteenth… year, Chedorlaomer and the kings allied with him went out and defeated the Rephaites in Ashteroth-karnaim, the Zuzites in Ham, the Emites in Shaveh-kiriathaim…,

וּבְאַרְבַּע֩ עֶשְׂרֵ֨ה שָׁנָ֜ה כְדָרְלָעֹ֗מֶר וְהַמְּלָכִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתּ֔וֹ בָּ֣א וַיַּכּ֤וּ אֶת־ רְפָאִים֙ בְּעַשְׁתְּרֹ֣ת קַרְנַ֔יִם וְאֶת־ הַזּוּזִ֖ים בְּהָ֑ם וְאֵת֙ הָֽאֵימִ֔ים בְּשָׁוֵ֖ה קִרְיָתָֽיִם׃ ū·ḇə·’ar·ba‘ ‘eś·rêh šā·nāh ḵə·ḏā·rə·lā·‘ō·mer wə·ham·mə·lā·ḵîm ’ă·šer ’it·tōw bā way·yak·kū ’eṯ- rə·p̄ā·’îm bə·‘aš·tə·rōṯ qar·na·yim wə·’eṯ- haz·zū·zîm bə·hām wə·’êṯ hā·’ê·mîm bə·šā·wêh qir·yā·ṯā·yimWLC · 5

and the Horites in [the area of] Mount Seir, as far as vvv El-paran, which [is] near the desert.

וְאֶת־ הַחֹרִ֖י בְּהַרְרָ֣ם שֵׂעִ֑יר עַ֚ד אֵ֣יל פָּארָ֔ן אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־ הַמִּדְבָּֽר׃ wə·’eṯ- ha·ḥō·rî bə·har·rām śê·‘îr ‘aḏ ’êl pā·rān ’ă·šer ‘al- ham·miḏ·bārWLC · 6

Then they turned back to invade… vvv En-mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and they conquered the whole territory of the Amalekites, as well as the Amorites who lived vvv in Hazazon-tamar.

וַ֠יָּשֻׁבוּ וַיָּבֹ֜אוּ אֶל־ עֵ֤ין מִשְׁפָּט֙ הִ֣וא קָדֵ֔שׁ וַיַּכּ֕וּ אֶֽת־ כָּל־ שְׂדֵ֖ה הָעֲמָלֵקִ֑י וְגַם֙ אֶת־ הָ֣אֱמֹרִ֔י הַיֹּשֵׁ֖ב בְּחַֽצְצֹ֥ן תָּמָֽר׃ way·yā·šu·ḇū way·yā·ḇō·’ū ’el- ‘ên miš·pāṭ hî qā·ḏêš way·yak·kū ’eṯ- kāl- śə·ḏêh hā·‘ă·mā·lê·qî wə·ḡam ’eṯ- hā·’ĕ·mō·rî hay·yō·šêḇ bə·ḥaṣ·ṣōn tā·mārWLC · 7

Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) marched out and arrayed themselves for battle in the Valley of Siddim

against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goiim, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar— four kings against five.

𐤀𐤕 𐤊𐤃𐤓𐤋𐤏𐤌𐤓 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤏𐤉𐤋𐤌 𐤅𐤕𐤃𐤏𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤂𐤅𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤌𐤓𐤐𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤔𐤍𐤏𐤓 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤅𐤊 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤀𐤋𐤎𐤓 𐤀𐤓𐤁𐤏𐤄 𐤌𐤋𐤊𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤇𐤌𐤔𐤄

Abram Rescues Lot

Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits…, and as the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some men fell into [the pits], but the survivors fled to the hill country.

𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤒 𐤄𐤔𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤇𐤌𐤓 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤕 𐤁𐤀𐤓𐤕 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤎𐤃𐤌 𐤅𐤏𐤌𐤓𐤄 𐤅𐤉𐤍𐤎𐤅 𐤅𐤉𐤐𐤋𐤅 𐤔𐤌𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤍𐤔𐤀𐤓𐤉𐤌 𐤍𐤎𐤅 𐤄𐤓𐤄

וְעֵ֣מֶק הַשִׂדִּ֗ים חֵמָ֔ר בֶּֽאֱרֹ֤ת בֶּאֱרֹת֙ מֶֽלֶךְ־ סְדֹ֥ם וַעֲמֹרָ֖ה וַיָּנֻ֛סוּ וַיִּפְּלוּ־ שָׁ֑מָּה וְהַנִּשְׁאָרִ֖ים נָּֽסוּ׃ הֶ֥רָה wə·‘ê·meq ha·śid·dīm ḥê·mār be·’ĕ·rōṯ be·’ĕ·rōṯ me·leḵ- sə·ḏōm wa·‘ă·mō·rāh way·yā·nu·sū way·yip·pə·lū- šām·māh wə·han·niš·’ā·rîm nā·sū he·rāhWLC · 10

The [four kings] seized all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food, and they went on their way.

וַ֠יִּקְחוּ אֶת־ כָּל־ רְכֻ֨שׁ סְדֹ֧ם וַעֲמֹרָ֛ה וְאֶת־ כָּל־ אָכְלָ֖ם וַיֵּלֵֽכוּ׃ way·yiq·ḥū ’eṯ- kāl- rə·ḵuš sə·ḏōm wa·‘ă·mō·rāh wə·’eṯ- kāl- ’ā·ḵə·lām way·yê·lê·ḵūWLC · 11

They also carried off - Abram’s nephew… Lot and his possessions, since [Lot] was living in Sodom.

וַיִּקְח֨וּ אֶת־ וַיֵּלֵ֑כוּ אַבְרָ֖ם בֶּן־ אֲחִ֥י ל֧וֹט וְאֶת־ רְכֻשׁ֛וֹ וְה֥וּא יֹשֵׁ֖ב בִּסְדֹֽם׃ way·yiq·ḥū ’eṯ- way·yê·lê·ḵū ’aḇ·rām ben- ’ă·ḥî lō·wṭ wə·’eṯ- rə·ḵu·šōw wə·hū yō·šêḇ bis·ḏōmWLC · 12

Then an escapee came and reported [this] to Abram the Hebrew. Now [Abram] was living near the Oaks of Mamre the Amorite, a brother of Eshcol [and] Aner, all of whom were bound by treaty to Abram.

הַפָּלִ֔יט וַיָּבֹא֙ וַיַּגֵּ֖ד לְאַבְרָ֣ם הָעִבְרִ֑י וְהוּא֩ שֹׁכֵ֨ן בְּאֵֽלֹנֵ֜י מַמְרֵ֣א הָאֱמֹרִ֗י אֲחִ֤י אֶשְׁכֹּל֙ וַאֲחִ֣י עָנֵ֔ר וְהֵ֖ם בַּעֲלֵ֥י בְרִית־ אַבְרָֽם׃ hap·pā·lîṭ way·yā·ḇō way·yag·gêḏ lə·’aḇ·rām hā·‘iḇ·rî wə·hū šō·ḵên bə·’ê·lō·nê mam·rê hā·’ĕ·mō·rî ’ă·ḥî ’eš·kōl wa·’ă·ḥî ‘ā·nêr wə·hêm ba·‘ă·lê ḇə·rîṯ- ’aḇ·rāmWLC · 13

And when Abram heard that his relative had been captured, he mobilized the 318… trained men born in his household, and they set out in pursuit as far as Dan.

אַבְרָ֔ם וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע כִּ֥י אָחִ֑יו נִשְׁבָּ֖ה וַיָּ֨רֶק אֶת־ שְׁמֹנָ֤ה עָשָׂר֙ וּשְׁלֹ֣שׁ מֵא֔וֹת חֲנִיכָ֜יו יְלִידֵ֣י בֵית֗וֹ וַיִּרְדֹּ֖ף עַד־ דָּֽן׃ ’aḇ·rām way·yiš·ma‘ kî ’ā·ḥîw niš·bāh way·yā·req ’eṯ- šə·mō·nāh ‘ā·śār ū·šə·lōš mê·’ō·wṯ ḥă·nî·ḵāw yə·lî·ḏê ḇê·ṯōw way·yir·dōp̄ ‘aḏ- dānWLC · 14

During the night, [Abram] divided… his forces and routed [Chedorlaomer’s army], pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.

לַ֛יְלָה ה֥וּא וַיֵּחָלֵ֨ק עֲלֵיהֶ֧ם׀ וַעֲבָדָ֖יו וַיַּכֵּ֑ם וַֽיִּרְדְּפֵם֙ עַד־ חוֹבָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר מִשְּׂמֹ֖אל לְדַמָּֽשֶׂק׃ lay·lāh hū way·yê·ḥā·lêq ‘ă·lê·hem wa·‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw way·yak·kêm way·yir·də·p̄êm ‘aḏ- ḥō·w·ḇāh ’ă·šer miś·śə·mōl lə·ḏam·mā·śeqWLC · 15

He retrieved all the goods, as well as his relative Lot and his possessions,… together with the women and the rest of the people.

וַיָּ֕שֶׁב אֵ֖ת כָּל־ הָרְכֻ֑שׁ וְגַם֩ אֶת־ אָחִ֤יו ל֨וֹט וּרְכֻשׁוֹ֙ הֵשִׁ֔יב וְגַ֥ם אֶת־ הַנָּשִׁ֖ים וְאֶת־ הָעָֽם׃ way·yā·šeḇ ’êṯ kāl- hā·rə·ḵuš wə·ḡam ’eṯ- ’ā·ḥîw lō·wṭ ū·rə·ḵu·šōw hê·šîḇ wə·ḡam ’eṯ- han·nā·šîm wə·’eṯ- hā·‘āmWLC · 16

Melchizedek Blesses Abram

After Abram returned from defeating vvv Chedorlaomer and the kings vvv allied with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).

and he blessed [Abram] and said: “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth,

וַֽיְבָרְכֵ֖הוּ וַיֹּאמַ֑ר בָּר֤וּךְ אַבְרָם֙ לְאֵ֣ל עֶלְי֔וֹן קֹנֵ֖ה שָׁמַ֥יִם וָאָֽרֶץ׃ way·ḇā·rə·ḵê·hū way·yō·mar bā·rūḵ ’aḇ·rām lə·’êl ‘el·yō·wn qō·nêh šā·ma·yim wā·’ā·reṣWLC · 19

and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” Then Abram gave [Melchizedek] a tenth of everything.

The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people, but take the goods for yourself.”

But Abram replied to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand to the LORD God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth,

𐤀𐤁𐤓𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤀𐤋 𐤌𐤋𐤊 𐤎𐤃𐤌 𐤄𐤓𐤉𐤌𐤕𐤉 𐤉𐤃𐤉 𐤀𐤋 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 𐤀𐤋 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤅𐤍 𐤒𐤍𐤄 𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤓𐤑

אַבְרָ֖ם וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֶל־ מֶ֣לֶךְ סְדֹ֑ם הֲרִימֹ֨תִי יָדִ֤י אֶל־ יְהוָה֙ אֵ֣ל עֶלְי֔וֹן קֹנֵ֖ה שָׁמַ֥יִם וָאָֽרֶץ׃ ’aḇ·rām way·yō·mer ’el- me·leḵ sə·ḏōm hă·rî·mō·ṯî yā·ḏî ’el- Yah·weh ’êl ‘el·yō·wn qō·nêh šā·ma·yim wā·’ā·reṣWLC · 22

that I will not accept even a thread, or a strap of a sandal, or anything that belongs to you, lest you should say, ‘I {have made} Abram rich.’

אִם־ וְאִם־ אֶקַּ֖ח וְעַ֣ד מִחוּט֙ שְׂרֽוֹךְ־ נַ֔עַל מִכָּל־ אֲשֶׁר־ לָ֑ךְ וְלֹ֣א תֹאמַ֔ר אֲנִ֖י אַבְרָֽם׃ אֶת־ הֶעֱשַׁ֥רְתִּי ’im- wə·’im- ’eq·qaḥ wə·‘aḏ mi·ḥūṭ śə·rō·wḵ- na·‘al mik·kāl ’ă·šer- lāḵ wə·lō ṯō·mar ’ă·nî ’aḇ·rām ’eṯ- he·‘ĕ·šar·tîWLC · 23

I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share for the men who went with me— Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre. They may take their portion.”
