Chapter 1
The Creation
1
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
𐤁𐤓𐤀𐤔𐤉𐤕 𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤀𐤕 𐤁𐤓𐤀 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤀𐤕 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑
בְּרֵאשִׁ֖ית אֱלֹהִ֑ים אֵ֥ת בָּרָ֣א הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וְאֵ֥ת הָאָֽרֶץ׃ bə·rê·šîṯ ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’êṯ bā·rā haš·šā·ma·yim wə·’êṯ hā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 1

Now the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

The First Day

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

אֱלֹהִ֖ים וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהִ֣י א֑וֹר וַֽיְהִי־ אֽוֹר׃ ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yō·mer yə·hî ’ō·wr way·hî- ’ō·wr — WLC · 3

And God saw that the light [was] good, and [He] separated the light from… the darkness.

God called the light “day,” and the darkness He called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning— the first day.

The Second Day

And God said, “Let there be an expanse between the waters, to separate… the waters from the waters.”

אֱלֹהִ֔ים וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהִ֥י רָקִ֖יעַ בְּת֣וֹךְ הַמָּ֑יִם וִיהִ֣י מַבְדִּ֔יל בֵּ֥ין מַ֖יִם לָמָֽיִם׃ ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yō·mer yə·hî rā·qî·a‘ bə·ṯō·wḵ ham·mā·yim wî·hî maḇ·dîl bên ma·yim lā·mā·yim — WLC · 6

So God made the expanse and separated… the waters beneath [it] from the waters above -. And it was so.

אֱלֹהִים֮ אֶת־ וַיַּ֣עַשׂ הָרָקִיעַ֒ וַיַּבְדֵּ֗ל בֵּ֤ין הַמַּ֙יִם֙ אֲשֶׁר֙ מִתַּ֣חַת לָרָקִ֔יעַ וּבֵ֣ין הַמַּ֔יִם אֲשֶׁ֖ר מֵעַ֣ל לָרָקִ֑יעַ וַֽיְהִי־ כֵֽן׃ ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’eṯ- way·ya·‘aś hā·rā·qî·a‘ way·yaḇ·dêl bên ham·ma·yim ’ă·šer mit·ta·ḥaṯ lā·rā·qî·a‘ ū·ḇên ham·ma·yim ’ă·šer mê·‘al lā·rā·qî·a‘ way·hî- ḵên — WLC · 7

God called the expanse “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning— the second day.

The Third Day

And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered into one place, so that the dry [land] may appear.” And it was so.

אֱלֹהִ֗ים וַיֹּ֣אמֶר הַמַּ֜יִם מִתַּ֤חַת הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ יִקָּו֨וּ אֶל־ אֶחָ֔ד מָק֣וֹם הַיַּבָּשָׁ֑ה וְתֵרָאֶ֖ה וַֽיְהִי־ כֵֽן׃ ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yō·mer ham·ma·yim mit·ta·ḥaṯ haš·šā·ma·yim yiq·qā·wū ’el- ’e·ḥāḏ mā·qō·wm hay·yab·bā·šāh wə·ṯê·rā·’eh way·hî- ḵên — WLC · 9

God called the dry [land] “earth,” and the gathering of waters He called “seas.” And God saw that [it was] good.

אֱלֹהִ֤ים׀ וַיִּקְרָ֨א לַיַּבָּשָׁה֙ אֶ֔רֶץ וּלְמִקְוֵ֥ה הַמַּ֖יִם קָרָ֣א יַמִּ֑ים אֱלֹהִ֖ים וַיַּ֥רְא כִּי־ טֽוֹב׃ ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yiq·rā lay·yab·bā·šāh ’e·reṣ ū·lə·miq·wêh ham·ma·yim qā·rā yam·mîm ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yar kî- ṭō·wḇ — WLC · 10

Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth vegetation: seed-bearing… plants and fruit trees, each bearing fruit with seed according to its kind - -.” And it was so.

אֱלֹהִ֗ים וַיֹּ֣אמֶר הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ תַּֽדְשֵׁ֤א דֶּ֔שֶׁא מַזְרִ֣יעַ זֶ֔רַע עֵ֚שֶׂב פְּרִ֞י עֵ֣ץ עֹ֤שֶׂה פְּרִי֙ זַרְעוֹ־ לְמִינ֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֥ר ב֖וֹ עַל־ הָאָ֑רֶץ וַֽיְהִי־ כֵֽן׃ ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yō·mer hā·’ā·reṣ taḏ·šê de·še maz·rî·a‘ ze·ra‘ ‘ê·śeḇ pə·rî ‘êṣ ‘ō·śeh pə·rî zar·‘ōw- lə·mî·nōw ’ă·šer ḇōw ‘al- hā·’ā·reṣ way·hî- ḵên — WLC · 11

The earth produced vegetation: seed-bearing… plants according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed… according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

הָאָ֜רֶץ וַתּוֹצֵ֨א דֶּ֠שֶׁא מַזְרִ֤יעַ זֶ֙רַע֙ עֵ֣שֶׂב לְמִינֵ֔הוּ וְעֵ֧ץ עֹֽשֶׂה־ פְּרִ֛י אֲשֶׁ֥ר זַרְעוֹ־ ב֖וֹ לְמִינֵ֑הוּ אֱלֹהִ֖ים וַיַּ֥רְא כִּי־ טֽוֹב׃ hā·’ā·reṣ wat·tō·w·ṣê de·še maz·rî·a‘ ze·ra‘ ‘ê·śeḇ lə·mî·nê·hū wə·‘êṣ ‘ō·śeh- pə·rî ’ă·šer zar·‘ōw- ḇōw lə·mî·nê·hū ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yar kî- ṭō·wḇ — WLC · 12

And there was evening, and there was morning— the third day.

וַֽיְהִי־ עֶ֥רֶב וַֽיְהִי־ בֹ֖קֶר שְׁלִישִֽׁי׃פ י֥וֹם way·hî- ‘e·reḇ way·hî- ḇō·qer šə·lî·šî yō·wm — WLC · 13
The Fourth Day

And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to distinguish between the day and the night, and let them be signs to mark [the] seasons and days and years.
𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤀𐤌𐤓 𐤉𐤄𐤉 𐤌𐤀𐤓𐤕 𐤁𐤓𐤒𐤉𐤏 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤁𐤃𐤉𐤋 𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤉𐤅𐤌 𐤅𐤁𐤉𐤍 𐤄𐤋𐤉𐤋𐤄 𐤅𐤄𐤉𐤅 𐤋𐤀𐤕𐤕 𐤅𐤋𐤌𐤅𐤏𐤃𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤋𐤉𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤔𐤍𐤉𐤌
אֱלֹהִ֗ים וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהִ֤י מְאֹרֹת֙ בִּרְקִ֣יעַ הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם לְהַבְדִּ֕יל בֵּ֥ין הַיּ֖וֹם וּבֵ֣ין הַלָּ֑יְלָה וְהָי֤וּ לְאֹתֹת֙ וּלְמ֣וֹעֲדִ֔ים וּלְיָמִ֖ים וְשָׁנִֽים׃ ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yō·mer yə·hî mə·’ō·rōṯ bir·qî·a‘ haš·šā·ma·yim lə·haḇ·dîl bên hay·yō·wm ū·ḇên hal·lā·yə·lāh wə·hā·yū lə·’ō·ṯōṯ ū·lə·mō·w·‘ă·ḏîm ū·lə·yā·mîm wə·šā·nîm — WLC · 14

And let them serve as lights in the expanse of the sky to shine upon the earth.” And it was so.

וְהָי֤וּ לִמְאוֹרֹת֙ בִּרְקִ֣יעַ הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם לְהָאִ֖יר עַל־ הָאָ֑רֶץ וַֽיְהִי־ כֵֽן׃ wə·hā·yū lim·’ō·w·rōṯ bir·qî·a‘ haš·šā·ma·yim lə·hā·’îr ‘al- hā·’ā·reṣ way·hî- ḵên — WLC · 15

God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night. And [He made] the stars {as well}.

אֱלֹהִ֔ים אֶת־ וַיַּ֣עַשׂ שְׁנֵ֥י הַגְּדֹלִ֑ים אֶת־ הַמְּאֹרֹ֖ת הַגָּדֹל֙ הַמָּא֤וֹר לְמֶמְשֶׁ֣לֶת הַיּ֔וֹם וְאֶת־ הַקָּטֹן֙ הַמָּא֤וֹר לְמֶמְשֶׁ֣לֶת הַלַּ֔יְלָה וְאֵ֖ת הַכּוֹכָבִֽים׃ ’ĕ·lō·hîm ’eṯ- way·ya·‘aś šə·nê hag·gə·ḏō·lîm ’eṯ- ham·mə·’ō·rōṯ hag·gā·ḏōl ham·mā·’ō·wr lə·mem·še·leṯ hay·yō·wm wə·’eṯ- haq·qā·ṭōn ham·mā·’ō·wr lə·mem·še·leṯ hal·lay·lāh wə·’êṯ hak·kō·w·ḵā·ḇîm — WLC · 16

God set [these lights] in the expanse of the sky to shine upon the earth,
𐤀𐤋𐤄𐤉𐤌 𐤅𐤉𐤕𐤍 𐤀𐤕𐤌 𐤁𐤓𐤒𐤉𐤏 𐤄𐤔𐤌𐤉𐤌 𐤋𐤄𐤀𐤉𐤓 𐤏𐤋 𐤄𐤀𐤓𐤑
אֱלֹהִ֖ים וַיִּתֵּ֥ן אֹתָ֛ם בִּרְקִ֣יעַ הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם לְהָאִ֖יר עַל־ הָאָֽרֶץ׃ ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yit·tên ’ō·ṯām bir·qî·a‘ haš·šā·mā·yim lə·hā·’îr ‘al- hā·’ā·reṣ — WLC · 17

to preside over the day and the night, and to separate the light from… the darkness. And God saw that [it was] good.

וְלִמְשֹׁל֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם וּבַלַּ֔יְלָה וּֽלֲהַבְדִּ֔יל הָא֖וֹר וּבֵ֣ין בֵּ֥ין הַחֹ֑שֶׁךְ אֱלֹהִ֖ים וַיַּ֥רְא כִּי־ טֽוֹב׃ wə·lim·šōl bay·yō·wm ū·ḇal·lay·lāh ū·lă·haḇ·dîl hā·’ō·wr ū·ḇên bên ha·ḥō·šeḵ ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yar kî- ṭō·wḇ — WLC · 18

And there was evening, and there was morning— the fourth day.

The Fifth Day

And God said, “Let the waters teem with living… creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the sky.”

אֱלֹהִ֔ים וַיֹּ֣אמֶר הַמַּ֔יִם יִשְׁרְצ֣וּ נֶ֣פֶשׁ חַיָּ֑ה שֶׁ֖רֶץ וְעוֹף֙ יְעוֹפֵ֣ף עַל־ הָאָ֔רֶץ עַל־ פְּנֵ֖י רְקִ֥יעַ הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yō·mer ham·ma·yim yiš·rə·ṣū ne·p̄eš ḥay·yāh še·reṣ wə·‘ō·wp̄ yə·‘ō·w·p̄êp̄ ‘al- hā·’ā·reṣ ‘al- pə·nê rə·qî·a‘ haš·šā·mā·yim — WLC · 20

So God created the great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, [with] which the waters teemed according to their kinds, and every winged bird after its kind. And God saw that [it was] good.

Then God blessed them [and] said, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters of the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.”

And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, land crawlers, and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so.

אֱלֹהִ֗ים וַיֹּ֣אמֶר הָאָ֜רֶץ תּוֹצֵ֨א חַיָּה֙ נֶ֤פֶשׁ לְמִינָ֔הּ בְּהֵמָ֥ה וָרֶ֛מֶשׂ וְחַֽיְתוֹ־ אֶ֖רֶץ לְמִינָ֑הּ וַֽיְהִי־ כֵֽן׃ ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yō·mer hā·’ā·reṣ tō·w·ṣê ḥay·yāh ne·p̄eš lə·mî·nāh bə·hê·māh wā·re·meś wə·ḥay·ṯōw- ’e·reṣ lə·mî·nāh way·hî- ḵên — WLC · 24

- God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that crawls upon the earth according to its kind. And God saw that [it was] good.

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon [it].”

So God created man in His [own] image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every vvv seed-bearing plant on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit contains… seed. They will be yours for food.

אֱלֹהִ֗ים וַיֹּ֣אמֶר הִנֵּה֩ נָתַ֨תִּי לָכֶ֜ם אֶת־ כָּל־ זֹרֵ֣עַ זֶ֗רַע אֲשֶׁר֙ עֵ֣שֶׂב׀ עַל־ פְּנֵ֣י כָל־ הָאָ֔רֶץ וְאֶת־ כָּל־ הָעֵ֛ץ אֲשֶׁר־ פְרִי־ זֹרֵ֣עַ בּ֥וֹ עֵ֖ץ זָ֑רַע יִֽהְיֶ֖ה לָכֶ֥ם לְאָכְלָֽה׃ ’ĕ·lō·hîm way·yō·mer hin·nêh nā·ṯat·tî lā·ḵem ’eṯ- kāl- zō·rê·a‘ ze·ra‘ ’ă·šer ‘ê·śeḇ ‘al- pə·nê ḵāl hā·’ā·reṣ wə·’eṯ- kāl- hā·‘êṣ ’ă·šer- p̄ə·rî- zō·rê·a‘ bōw ‘êṣ zā·ra‘ yih·yeh lā·ḵem lə·’āḵ·lāh — WLC · 29

And to every beast of the earth and every bird of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth— everything that has the breath of life in it— [I have given] every green plant for food.” And it was so.
